Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Our take on the Polk Audio SurroundBar®

by Tom Mathew

This single speaker uses patented surround sound technology to deliver room-filling audio without the need for rear speakers. The décor-friendly SurroundBar works with any home theater receiver, and its elegant design matches today's popular flat-panel TVs.

Overview: The Polk SurroundBar is a great solution for surround sound in situations where you can't, or choose not to, run speaker wires for a multi speaker system. Located above or below your TV, five surround channels (front left, center, front right, rear right, and rear left) are housed in this one speaker. Each channel can handle up to 125 watts RMS.

    Driver Technology
    Connections
    Mounting Options

    Driver Technology

SDA Surround technology: Polk's patented SDA Surround technology means there's no need to install rear speakers. SDA Surround creates a completely immersive experience, as if there were dozens of speakers all around you. This technology is based on fundamental research into the way our ears process sound and perceive the direction of sounds. It uses a patented combination of signal processing and acoustical geometry that complements the spacing between your ears to produce surround sound without the need for rear mounted speakers. Since the SurroundBar works directly with the hearing mechanism and requires no special room characteristics, it can deliver a room-filling surround experience in nearly any location in almost any type of room.

Enclosure: The SurroundBar features a stylishly curved anodized aluminum enclosure with gray trim. The shape of the heavy-duty non-resonant aluminum enclosure breaks up internal standing wave resonance to give you pure, lifelike sound.

    Drivers:

    • Woofers: Seven 3-1/2" Mineral Filled Polymer Dynamic Balance woofers provide clear, distortion-free midrange, even at high volume levels
    • Tweeters: Three high-performance 3/4" Dynamic Balance Silk/Polymer Composite dome tweeters deliver clear highs and lifelike imaging

    Connections

Speaker Terminals: The SurroundBar has five high-quality 5-way binding post input terminals, one each for front left, center, front right, rear right, and rear left channels. In addition to pin, spade, banana, and dual banana connectors, bare wire up to 11 gauge will fit. You will need to remove a plug inserted in the center of each post if you wish to use banana plugs.

Color Coded Wiring: The included 15-foot 10-conductor speaker wire is color-coded to match the SurroundBar terminals and clearly marked for easy hookup.

    Mounting Options

Video Shielded: The SurroundBar is magnetically (video) shielded for safe placement near your TV or computer monitor without causing picture interference.

Cradle: The speaker can be placed above or below the TV using the speaker cradle. While on the cradle, the speaker can be aimed up or down slightly toward the listening area. The cradle lifts the speaker approximately 1/2" above the surface on which it sits.

Wall Mounting: The wall mounting system consists of two pieces; a wall mounting plate and a speaker mounting bracket. First, the plate is mounted to the wall, it's 20 inches long and has multiple holes so you'll be able to mount it to at least one stud (use two if possible). Mounting screws should be used with a wall anchor if not in a stud. Next the Speaker mounting bracket is bolted to the SurroundBar using the supplied 3/8" bolts. The speaker can be tilted up or down approximately 15° when mounted on the bracket. The bracket mounts the speaker approximately 1/2" away from the wall. The two 3/8" threaded inserts are 13" apart and can be used with different mounting brackets if you prefer.

    Exceptional for the Bedroom

Written By Drew, Frederick, MD on Sunday, September 04, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok..so I have been an audiophile for a long time & have ordered from Crutchfield since the late 80's So after purchasing a new home I thought about yet again wiring the bedroom for surround & I thought I didn't want to go through that hassle yet still wanted "GOOD" sound in the bedroom, not just for movies & TV, but also for audio, cd's internet radio, etc. So I took an older Sony ES receiver I still had a STR-DA3000ES, hooked that up with an older CDP- M400CS CD Changer an older SONY KDL-46Z4100 TV, & finally a Sony SMP- N100 Media player & all I can say is "after break-in period" the thing is incredible whether it be at low listening TV volume late at night or full blown Multi-Stereo (all channels equal) when listening to CD's MP3's or Pandora this thing rocks. YES you need a subwoofer with this. NO it does not give you a full range of sound without it. I have this coupled with again an older ES 8" powered subwoofer (not sold in the states) with a 200 watt digital amplifier built in (I ordered this from Japan about 10 years ago)So for me (& also recommended) set front speakers to small, set center to small, set rear surrounds to large, set crossover frequency on subwoofer to 120Hz, set all base & treble levels to flat on the receiver set Center to NO gain, set front to NO gain, set rear's both right & left to +4DB & WHAMO, you have unbelievable simulated surround sound at either low medium or HIGH volumes. Thanks again Crutchfield, 25yrs later I am still satisfied.

    Polk Audio SurroundBar®

Written By Andy J, South Elgin, IL on Thursday, July 14, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We purchaced a bargan sound bar for my mom who has mono hearing (right ear's good) and everyone was impressed. I then shopped around til I found Polk Audio's Surround Bar. The sound quality is at least 10x better than the tv's.

I had to play with the wires to get the best sound. With a sub (also PA) everything is fantastic, I can finnally watch sports and dramsa with 5.1. The surround speakers take some tweeking as well, but worth the time spent adjusting levels and using walls to reflect the sound.

Not as good as I expected / wanted

Written By Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA on Monday, February 14, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had very high hopes for this -- I will say it is EXTREMELY easy to hook up and looks hot. The sound from the bar coming straight at you is crisp and nice (not the most bass, even with a powered sub, but the speakers sound crisp and clean). But I was trying to go from a true surround sound setup to a SurroundBar because my 21 mo old son was trying to decapitate himself with our speakers on stands -- and we didn't want to go through the hassle of mounting the speakers to the wall. I understood it wasn't going to be an exact replica of surround -- how could it? -- but it falls shorter than I can handle. Returning this since being 80% happy isn't good enough to spend this much and lose a great system -- but I will say I received exceptional Crutchfield support from the advisor, tech support when I called to make sure I wasn't missing something with the setup (I wasn't -- it's SUPER easy) and am I very happy with the overall experience as a first time customer -- but we'll go through the hassle of mounting the surrounds since apparently we are more audio snobs than I thought..!

Great when multiple speakers aren't an option

Written By ChrisH, Ballston Lake, NY on Friday, February 04, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with this sound bar. I recently got a receiver to replace my old out of the
box home theater. This sound bar easily hooks up to my receiver. My receiver is in the
basement and the speaker wire that comes with the product was perfect for my
situation. It was long enough (with some to spare) to make it through the conduit I have
running behind the wall up to my TV. I currently have it resting on my mantel as I plan on
getting a new TV this year and only want to mount it once. You definitely need a
subwoofer to go with it, however. The subwoofer I got makes the whole system come
together. Overall I recommend this for anyone who doesn't have the space to have the
    5+ speakers for true surround.

    great system but...

Written By steelydan, louisville, ky on Saturday, January 01, 2011

this is great little system, it sounds great, it's easy to hook up and the wireless sub-woofer makes placement easy. the only problem is, it doesn't have an digital optical audio port.
i purchased the system for my bedroom we didn't want a full 5.1 stereo taking up space and this seemed like a great option. but most new tv's don't come w/ an rca audio out.
they've moved on to optical. this system sounded great on my 10 old 32" tv, easy to hook up made the tv sound great. i was looking forward to hooking up to my new 50" plasma, but come to find out i couldn't. it doesn't have an rca audio out. i now have to get an digital optical cable and a converter box just so the system will work. if you purchase this system you'll love it, but make it actually works the tv your purchasing it for.

    Way better than expected

Written By G. Gagne, Atkinson, NH on Saturday, January 01, 2011

For those of you who complained about the sound quality, you either didn't
attach a powered sub woofer and/or didn't tune your receiver properly. This
thing rocks. Good sound bars almost make me never want to bother w/ full
surround again - unless I buy a house that is pre-wired it's almost not worth
it. I can only imagine what the Def Tech one is like if I only had the dough!

i just hooked the polk sda sound bar on my 10 year old sanyo 37" tv, can't wait see what it
sounds like w/ the new 50". this system rocks, it's everything that the reviews said it was.
i'm watching id4 on amcHD and it is solid, the major just at the alien space ship for the first
time and seemed to be coming from all sides. for a minimalist system there can't be
    anything better for the price.

    Very Pleased

Written By DRR, Charleston, SC on Saturday, November 27, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use the SurroundBar with a Yamaha AV receiver and a 42" Panasonic Plasma and a
Panasonic BluRay DVD, in an upstairs den. I tried a Polk satellite system but didn't like the
necessary wires. The SurroundBar has been a great solution. Easy to install and set up
with my receiver. For me, the sound has more "depth" than a sense of true surround, but I
find this a minor factor. TV, DVD, and Blu-Ray and music all sound great.

Just moved into an apartment where running wires is not a option so the soundbar was a perfect choice for me. While still not as good as fully separated sound from my old 6.1 system. It can fill a room with great sound and dose give you some 3-D sound shaping.

Just what I was looking for

Written By GaryD, Phoenix, AZ on Saturday, October 02, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a speaker system that was easy to install, and would provide more surround sound than my older 3.1 system in an L-shaped room with most walls encumbered by shelves and bookcases. The Polk Surroundbar literature said its SDA Surround Technology could meet these requirements, because its all-in-one-bar speakers produced surround sound by electronic mixing of sounds among many speakers (rather than by bouncing sound off the walls to achieve a surround effect).

The literature was right! I get very good 5.1 surround sound effects from a 42" speaker bar mounted atop my LCD TVscreen. The system can be hooked up in 10 minutes or less. And coupled with a separate subwoofer, it provides excellent sound reproduction with no muddled or brashly inter-mixed sounds.

Since it provides very good surround sound (not perfect, but well within the qualify specified in its literature), I give it a 5-star rating; it's literature gave accurate specs of its capabilities, and it provides excellent overall sound reproduction.

Great surround bar if you want to use your own receiver

Written By Chris, Reston, VA on Thursday, September 09, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose this surround bar solution from Polk because I wanted to use my existing
Sony receiver. If you haven't noticed, most of the sound bar solutions out
there have their own internal digital sound processor (DSP). I specifically
wanted my sound bar to take input from multiple sources without sending audio
    through my TV.

That said, my wife and I have noticed a huge improvement over regular TV sound
    from using the sound bar.

    Sound:
    - Excellent highs; crisp, clear sound
    - Lacking in the low and mid-range; bass response is fairly weak and therefore I
will probably pair this with a wireless sub sound the road

    Quality:
    - Excellent build quality - this thing is heavy!

    Appearance:
    - Great aesthetic qualities
    - Perfectly matches the bezel of my flat screen TV
    - Cables are easy to hide

We really like this soundbar. Moved our 55 inch Samsung to over the fireplace, which
did not lend itself to our existing surround speaker system. This thing looks great under
the tv and has a good sound. A very good second choice if no room for surround
speakers. It adds a nice sophisticated look without a ton of wires.

    Impressed

I was impressed. I had a nice 6.1 Yamaha system. I started to move my video entertainment center over to my fiance house where i am moving too. I was unset because my old system would not fit. I also did not want to run the wires. So i figured i would settle for the soundbar. I have to be honest....impressed. It is not true surround sound but it can fool your ear. It has big sound and i very much enjoy it. So if you have a small room and do not want to run wires. Do it!

    Polk Audio SurroundBar®

Written By Brian, Lake Havasu, AZ on Wednesday, January 06, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy set up into my receiver and the sound delivers. The product is heavy and very
sturdy. The sound is clear when I crank it up and looks good under my flat screen. I did
not want to deal with a bunch of little speakers all over the room, so I did the sound bar,
a sub, and two rear speakers. I did it all at a pretty good price through Crutchfield and
could not be happier. The price was good and I saved putting it all in myself. If you don't
want to wire a bunch of speakers, or don't have a lot of room, the sound bar is right for
    you.

This product is well made and a good alternative to a slew of speakers cluttering your room. As others have said it is not as full as could be expected from larger individual speakers. I believe that when coupled with a good subwoofer it is quite acceptable. It might be unfair to only rate this bar a 4 given the quality of its manufacture and given that it can not be expected to perform miracles. :)

The polk Audio soundbar came well packaged and is of good quality. One feature I really liked was the speaker wires were covered in a black loom already. Another thing was the wires were pre-labeled. Sound is very clear and sounds great with my subwoofer. I would recommend this product especially if you are concerned with space or aren't able to put speakers around you.

    Great 5.1/7.1 system (W/ SUB)

Written By Charles, Chicago, IL on Tuesday, December 02, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this with my 46" LCD TV and it sounds absolutley great for
movies and really good for music. The TV location and seating
arrangements in my room made it impossible to have true 5.1/7.1 speaker
locations. As the literature says, a subwoofer is required. With my Polk
DSW Pro 400 subwoofer, movies are great straight out of the box. My
receiver allows me to output full bandwidth to the speakers AND up to
120hz for the sub with the direct subwoofer cable routing. With the
reciever set to it's max 120hz for the sub, music sounds really full if not
quite as good as my Polk LSi's. By tailoring the subwoofer volume to the
type of music I'm listening to, I actually don't notice any lack of lows. It's
really the lower mids and crisp highs that are not as full as my LSi's in the
adjoining rooms. The surround effects are not quite as good as the larger
surround bar 50 or a true 5.1/7.1 set up, but are really good for a single
location speaker. When watching HD cable TV there's a really dramatic
difference when the audio is 5.1 vs. stereo even though I have stereo
coming out of all the speakers. Definitely worth the effort if it's not easy to
    do a true 5.1/7.1 !!!

    Easy set-up: moderate results

Written By Graham, Lake Geneva, Wi on Thursday, November 06, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An easy set-up for this sound bar. All cables well labeled and the binding posts aren't too hard to get at. However the sound quality is less than I expected. If you push it a little bit it will "wake up", but for most listening situations it needs more definition and a bit more separation. It does, however, make for a very clean install thus solving the space problem if you've got one.
