Our take on the Terk Leapfrog® LF-30S

by Barry Montgomery

Send TV shows, DVD movies, and stereo music to any room your home wirelessly — Terk's Leapfrog LF-30S system makes it easy. Just connect an A/V source component to the compact transmitter, and hook up the identically sized receiver to any TV or audio system within a 150-foot radius. Terk even includes all the connecting cables you'll need, so you can achieve multi-room audio/video in minutes.

Another great feature: the LF-30S can also transmit infrared remote control commands from your secondary viewing or listening room back to your main system. That means you can use a universal remote in your second room to pause the DVD you're watching, change channels on your cable box, skip a track on the CD you're listening to, adjust the volume of your music — whatever you like! Terk even includes a wired infrared flasher that connects to the transmitter unit. This lets you hide the transmitter behind your components or elsewhere out of sight without losing the ability to relay remote commands.

The system includes one transmitter and one receiver. The LF-30S uses the 2.4 GHz frequency band for a clear signal over longer distances — you won't believe it's wireless. Cables and AC adapters included.

Highlights:

  • transmits video and/or stereo audio from TVs, receivers, PCs, DVD players, CD players, cable TV boxes, satellite receivers, and other A/V components
  • built-in infrared repeater system lets you control components via a remote from your secondary viewing/listening room
  • wired infrared flasher (allows placement flexibility for receiver unit)
  • transmitter has composite A/V input
  • receiver includes standard RF output and composite A/V output (compatible with all TVs)
  • up to 3 more receiver units can be added to accommodate multiple TVs or audio systems
  • reception up to 150 feet away in most locations
  • can function as a child monitor or part of a home security system when connected to a camcorder and TV
  • connecting cables included
  • 4"W x 1-11/16"H (5-11/16" with antenna up) x 7-1/4"D (transmitter and receiver are identically sized)
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Specifications

    Features

Overview: The Leapfrog LF-30S system by Terk wirelessly transmits audio/video sources to remote TVs, or audio only to remote receivers or powered speakers throughout a home. They use the 2.4 GHz frequency band for transmission for the clearest signal over long distances and eliminate the need for in-wall or external wiring.

Connections: The transmitter may be connected to any audio/video device with RCA audio/video outputs; there is no coax input on the transmitter, so the device connected to the transmitter must have RCA audio and/or composite video outputs. The receiver has RCA audio/video outputs and a RF coaxial output, so it can send signals to any device with RCA audio/video inputs or a RF coaxial input, such as a VCR, TV, camcorder or audio/video receiver.

Adjustable Antennas: The antenna on the receiver and transmitter can pivot and rotate. For best results, the inside faces of the antennas should be facing each other and perpendicular to an imaginary line drawn between the two units

Compatibility: This unit can be used whenever you need to transmit high quality video and/or audio from devices such as DBS receivers, DVD players, camcorders and CD players to a TV or audio receiver located in a remote location of your home or business.

    Perfect for what I needed

Written By Anonymous, Torrington, CT on Friday, September 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This system does exactly what I could have hoped for. I am using it in my bedroom to transmit from the cable box on my dresser to the TV mounted on the wall. I didn't want to pay an electrician to come and drill holes in the wall and it was a difficult spot (between two doors) for me to do myself. I have a 24" TV and the quality is actually very good. The distance between the transmitter and receiver is pretty short so I'm not sure how it would perform over a long distance or on a bigger TV. I am very happy with this purchase.

    Cons:
    Cant get rid of static

    Add-a-TV

Written By Rito, Lititz, PA on Wednesday, March 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It does work to a certain extent and for sheer convenience, it is hard to beat.
    Pros:
I was able to receive Dish Network channels on another TV without additional wiring.
    Cons:
The antenna and remote extender are very directional. You have to point the remote control directly at the receiver for it to respond. The receiver is prone to interference from other wireless gadgets like the mouse and keyboards. Use of microwave oven makes images on TV unrecognizable.

    Works Fair

Written By LRR, Jacksonville, FL on Friday, March 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy setup. Works fair. Video is good, sound has "some" popping noise. Played with the channel selector on unit helped some. Wife says that late at night the popping noise stopped, so it may be interference from other 2.6GHz devices. 150 feet is a stretch, 50 ft maybe.
    Pros:
    easy to get signal
    Cons:
    interference from other things

Audio interference is very bad and the units are only 20' apart. Not real happy with performance - should have bought the higher dollar unit with higher frequency transmission.

    Great Product - Great Price

Written By Dutch, Lawrenceville, GA on Saturday, February 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to replace a digital signal converter box we used on the only TV that was not connected to cable. The digital converter box and indoor antenna produced pitiful reception with constant loss of signal. This unit gives us all the channels we have on cable with clear sound and picture. It was easy to install, took les then 15 minutes. The reasonable price, ease of installation and quality of performance makes this unit a must have to replace a digital converter box and antenna. I highly recommend this product.
    Pros:
Reasonable price. Ease of installation. Great sound and picture quality, even through a cabinet and a wall.
    Cons:
Audio/Video cable is a little short making it impossible to place the unit high enough so there won't be interference when someone walks between the sender and receiver.

MY unit works great. But when I attempted to get an additional receiver I was told you can't get one because it was discontinued. So regardless what it says on the box, the unit is not expandable.

This item works great. Hooked up and working in about 15 minutes. Good, clear picture and sound. HD channels come thru nice, better than you'd think. Saves me from having another receiver from Directv and its $10 a month cost.
    Pros:
Easy to install. Good picture and sound. Saves money!
    Cons:
Microwave oven has its way with it, but I turn the sound down so no big deal.

We wanted to add a TV into a workout room, but didn't want to pay $20/month for another cable box. Instead, we can watch cable, DVR, OnDemand, etc. from the bedroom HD cable box and save $$$!!! No wires, No drilling! Absolutely a positive purchase!!!

Written By Anonymous, Portland, ME on Monday, August 01, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wasn't impressed with the range on these units. I placed my speakers/amp just outside the house on the porch and the results were far less than I expected given the distance is no more than 20' between units. They did OK, but the signal drops out and you get a loud pop or hissing noise when it does. It wouldn't be so bad if the signal just dropped and came back on, but the pops and hissing are very annoying. I would gladly pay more $$ for better signal strength.

The Terk Leapfrog® LF-30S is a cost effective, low hassle way to locate an
additional tv in any area. The lack of hi-def inputs may turn some people off,
but this device isn't really for a home theater type application. If you want a
spare tv in the kitchen (microwave does cause interference), bathroom, or
patio...this is for you. Lastly, the IR remote extender works like a charm. Good
    product.
