Logitech

Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® One

by Ralph Graves

Enjoy exceptionally simple operation of your home theater system with the Harmony One. This remote's color touchscreen clearly displays common activities, like "watch TV" or "listen to music." When you select an activity, such as watching a DVD, the remote instantly evaluates your system, turns on or off the appropriate components, selects the proper settings, and starts the DVD player.

Ergonomic design for easier navigation
The remote's contoured shape fits naturally in the palm of your hand for comfortable operation. Its backlit controls are logically and neatly arranged, so it's easy to find the button you're looking for. And the buttons are sculpted, so you can distinguish them by feel without having to look at the remote.

Easy, web-based programming
Harmony's online wizard makes set up a snap. Just plug the remote into your computer with the provided USB cable, visit Harmony's website, and answer some simple questions about your system. That's it — the setup wizard automatically downloads the necessary codes and programs the remote for you. The site remembers your settings, too, so it's easy to reprogram the Harmony One later if you change or add components.

    Features

Overview: The Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote provides simple, intuitive control of even the most elaborate entertainment system for anyone in the family. The remote setup is accomplished through Harmony's interactive web site. The Harmony One Remote can control up to 15 devices, including home automation devices such as light and climate controllers.

Setup: The Harmony Remote Activities are configured through unique Web Wizard tools on HarmonyRemote.com. Using Logitech's Smart State Database of over 225,000 electronic devices from over 5,000 manufacturers, you can easily customize the remote to your system. The database, together with IR learning, ensures support of all infrared-controlled devices made by any manufacturer, including Televisions, A/V Receivers, Cable/Satellite Boxes, VCRs, DVD Players, CD Players, Game Consoles, Mini Systems, Computers, and Home Automation devices.

Learning Function: In addition to the devices which can be entered using the web interface, this remote can also learn most functions of other infrared remotes.

Full-Color Touch Screen: The Harmony One's full-color touch screen gives you easy, one-touch access to any entertainment activity such as watching a DVD, watching TV, or listening to music.

Sculpted Backlit Buttons: The Harmony One sculpted backlit buttons allow you to easily operate the remote in the dark, while its ergonomic design allows the unit to fit comfortably in your hand.

Lithium-Ion Battery/Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony One Pro includes a removable rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, which provides up to a one-week charge under normal use. The remote comes with a docking station that keeps the remote fully charged. Because the docking station is horizontal, it allows the remote to be used while charging.

One-Touch Operation: The Harmony One uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system. You can use one of the touch-screen's Activity buttons to power on your TV, Blu-ray player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "on", the buttons on the remote are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color display. The remote will ask a series of questions, such as "Is the TV on?" or "Is the volume turned up?" in order to troubleshoot the problem and correct it.

Flash Memory: The settings are stored in a non-volatile flash memory so they will never be lost, even when the battery needs charging.

System Off: One push of the off button turns off all the equipment in your system.

    System Requirements:

    • IBM or compatible PC:
      • Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, or Vista
      • USB port
      • CD-ROM drive
      • Internet access
    • Macintosh:
      • Macintosh OS X 10.3-10.5
      • USB port

    Universal Remote

Written By Perk, Medford, NJ on Friday, October 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as advertised, more intuitive than the 880 remote I have. Touchscreen is nice. Occaisonally misses a command, and have to adjust aim of remote. Easily programmed, although I had to contact tech support to program a specialized command. They were up to the task, fortunately.
    Pros:
Works 99% of the time. Intuitive interface.
    Cons:
    A bit pricey.

    Logitech Harmony One

Written By Scott, Meredith, NH on Monday, October 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Use it all the time as the easiest way to manage a multicomponent TV/Music setup. (HDTV, Amp, TiVo, etc.)
    Pros:
Easy to setup. Did so once and haven't attached it to my computer since. Worked fine with a Mac by the way. Was surprised how well it works with TiVo. I don't bother with the TiVo remote.
    Cons:
Would like to see even more customizable for automatic sound fields, etc.

    love at first click

Written By Mike, Durham, NC on Friday, May 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After too many complaints from the spouse on the number of remotes, and steps required to change from TV to Blue-Ray, etc I finally broke down and bought the Harmony One. It arrived yesterday evening, and I had it up and running in under 30 minutes after gathering the equipment model numbers. I have had to go back a few times to tweak little things that I didn't like the first go around (like Amp/Receiver turning off - I like to leave mine on) - but navigating the set-up is quick and simple via the PC application. I was aslo able to program/add-in several features from my Amp/Receiver remote that were not there the first time through. Now, I have one remote - the rest are in storage and life on the couch is peaceful for all. I wish I had gotten this years ago, but so happy I have it now. Works great with DirecTV DVR as well - even with all of the short-cut buttons and apps.
    Pros:
easy, customizable to fit your needs, went from 5 remotes to 1, and the wife loves it.
    Cons:
seems a little light in weight to me - I like a more sturdy remote, and finger prints as others have mentioned.

    Fine remote

Written By Alex, Lake Forest, Illinois on Wednesday, May 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The main thing I liked I was able to download all my settings from my Harmony Remote 520..saved a lot time. Not a big fan of the touch screen..I like regular buttons, because you can "memorize" them..and press the appropiate button, with the touch screen you have to look at the screen...
    Pros:
    Easy setup
    Cons:
Touchscreen...the latest fad...not very useful because you have to look everytime...to use it..

Bought this for my husband for his birthday. I was somewhat intimated by the whole process of setting it up, but between Harmonys software set up and the helpful staff at Crutchfield I was able to set it up no problem. Love Crutchfield !!!

Harmony One - A Great Product

Written By Keith S, Arizona on Wednesday, March 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

PLEASE go to Logitech.com and read my review under the Harmony One remote REVIEWS area. Look for the name "Keith S" and location "Arizona". My review is far to extensive to post here at Crutchfield due to a limited number of available characters. It is both valuable and worth the effort to go there and read it.
    Pros:
Ergonomic, software programming is "relatively" easy, can learn programming from other remotes, rechargeable battery, Crutchfield provides a 60 day "no question" return policy.
    Cons:
Needs to have a dedicated "decimal" key (for inputting digital channels manually,) the shiny surface shows hand oils easily, which is really there with textured remotes too, you just don't "see" this with non-shiny surfaces. But - it is a good reminder to "wipe-er-down" occasionally.

This thing is awesome! all buttons can be organized exactly how you want them! labeling each button so my wife can understand is a life saver! I have a Denon amplifier,xbox360,jvc vcr, sony dvd carousel, dish network pvr, and a playstation 3. The only piece that needed an adaptor was the ps3. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to get rid of 6 remotes!
    Pros:
fully customizable. addind family pictures as screen saver...
    Cons:
could use a long lasting battery. vey slick in dry hands. rubber back should cover entire back side.

    Great Programmable Remote

Written By Dan2e, WIlmington, DE on Sunday, February 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had previous programmable remotes, including from Logitech and this one finally did the trick. The programming could not be easier. I initially used the programming wizard to do my setup and then went back and was able to make the modifications I wanted. Took less than 30 minutes from opening the box until watching TV, TiVO, DVDs, etc. Only think I wish is that I had more control over naming the Activities, but that is just a cosmetic issue. My electronically challenged wife is now able to control and work the entertainment systemand she is very happy the four remotes that were on the coffee table are now down to a femail-approved one.
    Pros:
Easy setup, easy to customize Rechargable battery
    Cons:
Would like to be able to add customizable button / graphis lables to the touchscreen

Written By Pat, DE on Wednesday, February 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hardware buttons were very unresponsive, and didn't always turn my cable box off when it was supposed to. Also the required software to program the remote is not compatible with 64-bit versions of Mac OSX, I had to borrow a friends computer to set it up. Too many flaws for such an expensive remote so I sent it back.
    Pros:
Had codes for all devices I own, comcast box, onkyo receiver, xbox360, apple tv2
    Cons:
Buttons on remote were very unresponsive. Software not compatible with latest Mac OSX and hasen't been for quite a while according to their forums.

    does what it says

Written By Anonymous, san diego on Tuesday, January 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

very nice product that does what it says once you get it set up. took a little while to get there as the software is not the most intuitive, but now that i'm there it definitely helped to clean up my previous 5-remote situation. the only thing i can't get set up well is the samsung smart-tv control. i've managed to program custom buttons for this, but they are awkward at best so i still pull out the qwerty samsung remote if i'm using this function a lot.
    Pros:
reclaim your living room from excessive remote controls. software is workable with patience. custom buttons allow for workarounds when standard buttons don't cut it.
    Cons:
not designed with advanced tv features like smart-tv and audio-return-channel in mind. battery life not great. software not the most intuitive. lots of bells-and-whistles for live-tv viewers (i don't know any) like custom channel icons.

    Huge bang for the buck

Written By Pete P., Windham, Maine on Tuesday, January 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This has got to be the best money that I have spent on my home theater. Push one button for TV, a different one for Blu-Ray DVD and another one for my son's gaming consoles. It is that simple. Super easy to program and use; replaced separate remotes for the Blu-Ray, 3-D TV, Receiver and the Cable box. Bought another one for my other son and his Bride-to-be. One of their favorite gifts so far!
    Pros:
Easy to program; easy to use; replaces four other remotes
    Cons:

I liked it so much I bought one for my Dad!

Written By Dave R, Cleveland OH on Monday, January 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Logitech Harmony One for myself in the past and really liked the way it worked. To me it was a great way to get rid of five battery hungry remote controls. The only regret I had with my first purchase was not buying it through Crutchfield. For the enthusiast down to the new guy on the block - Crutchfield's tech support is bar-none best. Anyway - I bought a second remote for my father and his is supported through Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Easily rechargeable in it's cradle. Easy to control several devices at once. When I turn on the TV it controls the receiver volume and the satellite for channels (exactly as I set it up).
    Cons:
I have uploaded the proper remotes but didn't figure out how to update the time and date. When I went looking all I saw were options for 2009, 2010 & 2011. I haven't plugged it in to my computer so all is not lost. Hey this is a great remote - not too many cons!

Great remote until the screen dies

Written By RobertB, San Antonio, TX. on Monday, January 09, 2012

Great remote as long as it holds up. Mine is only a year and a half old and I already had to replace a bloated battery, now the screen has gone out. I found out through the Logitech website I am not alone on this problem. Many others have had the same problem and and being out of warranty all Logitech will offer me is a 50% off coupon for a new unit. They say they can't fix the problem I will just have to buy a new unit. With all of the complaints on this problem to Logitech they know they have a problem but will not stand behind their product. Oh and don't forget about their extra charge for tech support on the phone only to be told there is nothing they can do. Buyer beware.
    Pros:
    Easy to program
    Cons:
It has an hardware problem. Screen dies

    the only remote you need

Written By Jeff M, Allen, OK on Saturday, November 05, 2011

Everything runs through a home theater receiver and the wife and kids would have to ask which remote and what button they would have to hit to do some thing. Now all they have to do is grab one remote and push an activity ie, watch TV, play a game, watch a DVD. It works with my Direct TV great. Plus you can set it up with activites such as watch TV without surround sound. I highly recommend this universal remote. The setup is extremely easy just get the make and model number of your equipment and plug the remote into the computer and follow the instructions on the screen.
    Pros:
It combined four remotes into one

    harmony one

Written By Dr. T., Boca Raton, Fl on Thursday, October 20, 2011

I was very frustrated with the universal remote that came with my comcast dvr. I could program it to turn on my onkyo sound system but it wouldn't turn it off. Onkyo, Comcast, Scientific Atlanta and Crutchfield really couldn't help. I had to use multiple remotes. The Harmony one was $120 less than the top of the line model. It allows me 3 separate options for my Onkyo, power on, power off or power toggle. Programing was a little confusing at first but go slowly and it is done. It does much more than I thought it would and is very user friendly.
