Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 350

by Kristen Schaub

Potent sound from compact bookshelf speakers

Definitive Technology's StudioMonitor 350s deliver deep, rich bass that you wouldn't normally expect from bookshelf speakers. Each has a 5-1/4" woofer and an 8" bass radiator that extends their low-frequency response down to 26 Hz. A 1" aluminum dome tweeter provides smooth highs that blend beautifully with the mids and lows.

Solid build for impressive sound

tweeter

The pure aluminum dome tweeter produces sparkling, clear highs.

The StudioMonitor 350s use some of Definitive's best technologies for lifelike upper and midrange clarity. Flush-mounted drivers deliver high and low frequencies to your ears at the same time, for even, realistic sound. Advanced crossovers ensure that each frequency makes it to the right driver, so you hear all the detail and depth of your favorite music and movies. And Definitive Technology clearly paid attention to these speakers' looks — high-gloss black end caps and wraparound grille cloth give them a sleek, modern style.

Building a system

The StudioMonitor make excellent front left and right speakers in a surround sound or stereo music setup. You can place them on shelf or mount them on your wall using optional brackets. Pair the 350s with Definitive's C/L/R2002 center speaker, ProMonitor 800 surrounds, and SuperCube III or ProSub 800 for big home theater sound.

Overview: The Definitive Technology StudioMonitors are compact bookshelf loudspeakers designed for use in audio/video entertainment systems. Because the StudioMonitors are true full-range speakers with extended low-frequency response they deliver superb performance both as stand-alone speakers and when combined with separate subwoofers. Due to their compact size, wide-range, high power handling, and natural articulate clarity, they are ideal for use as front, center, or surround speakers in a home theater environment. The StudioMonitor 350 loudspeakers feature a high-definition 5-1/4 inch bass/midrange driver with cast magnesium basket pressure-coupled to a 8-inch low bass radiator for outstanding bass response, and an annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome tweeter for smooth highs. The StudioMonitor 350s use a non-resonant monocoque cabinets featuring elegant piano-gloss black lacquer end cap and wraparound grille cloth styling.

    Driver Technology

Pressure Coupled Radiator Design: The StudioMonitor bookshelf loudspeakers provide clear, high-definition sound by pressure-coupling a 5-1/4 inch driver to an 8-inch low bass radiator cleverly placed on the side of the speaker's cabinet. This technique increases the lower-midbass radiating area of the speaker without increasing the size of the enclosure. The result is a warm and life-like sound.

High-Definition Cast-Magnesium Basket Drivers: Each StudioMonitor 350 utilizes a 5-1/4 inch high definition cast basket bass/midrange driver for significant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. This bass/midrange driver incorporates a deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cone, combined with butyl rubber surround and dust-cap, a high temperature vented voice coil, and a massive magnet structure. This combination of features assures high definition, superb transient response, high efficiency, high power handling and extended bass response. In addition, they are assembled utilizing an aerodynamically designed, magnetically inert, cast-magnesium basket to minimize internal reflections off the back of the cone and preserve structural and magnetic integrity under all conditions.

Moving Coil Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters: Each StudioMonitor 350 utilizes a specially annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome tweeter, suspended by a silk surround and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured phase plug/lens, as well as engineered to assure perfectly controlled, linear movement. This results in smooth extended response (beyond 30 kHz), greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, wider dispersion and notably higher definition. Magnetic fluid damping is incorporated for ultra high power handling.

Phase-Coherent Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks: The sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley crossover network design used in the StudioMonitor 350s equalizes the drivers for linear phase and frequency response. This preserves the phase coherence, transient response and dynamic integrity of the signal for lifelike music and home theater reproduction in your home.

Break-In Period: The StudioMonitor loudspeakers will sound good right out of the box; however, an extended break-in period of 20-40 hours or more of playing is required to reach full performance capability. The break-in period allows the suspensions to work in and results in full bass, a more open midrange, and smoother high frequency reproduction.

    Enclosure Design

Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinet: The monocoque cabinets are constructed of high-density medite with 1" thick front and rear baffles, foam damping pads and internal braces. This virtually eliminates resonant cabinet coloration which could otherwise interfere with the pure sound produced by the high definition drivers. The design of the StudioMonitor's cabinets reduce diffraction to an absolute minimum by flush mounting drivers on extremely narrow baffles with radial edges, which are covered by a "frameless grille sock".

    Connections

Binding Posts: Each StudioMonitor 350 is equipped with a pair of gold-plated, 5-way binding posts to attach your receiver's speaker wire.

    Mounting Options

Placement: The StudioMonitor 350 loudspeakers are mirror images of one another, with the side-mounted, pressure-coupled woofers located on the opposite sides, so they may be set-up with both woofers facing in or both woofers facing out. Facing the woofers in or out will vary the sound somewhat and which way is best will vary with your room. The StudioMonitor 350 loudspeakers can also be position either vertically or horizontally. If it is used horizontally, make sure the pressure-coupled woofer is facing up. There should be at least 1 to 2-inches of clearance between the speaker's side-mounted woofer and the wall.

Mounting: The StudioMonitor 350s can be simply placed on a bookshelf, table-top, or speaker stand. They can also be hung on the wall using the supplied keyhole brackets.

    Full Year Trial

Written By SaltyBoiler, Chicago, IL on Saturday, June 18, 2011

I have had these speakers for a full year and I really like them. They have been in the main room (2.1 system), and now are in a bedroom system (2 ch.). They operate very well in both rooms, but really shine alongside a good subwoofer because the bass radiator in them operates magically as a low-midrange to complement the front driver, and the Sub. With bass radiator and metal tweeter, you will get bright sound with good bass.

These suit Movie Soundtracks very well (as well as Rock, HipHop, Alternative while in a true 2 channel. This speaker is fairly heavy-bulky for today's Home Theater enthusiast when compared to the competition. This is a product that was launched in 2002-2003 when it was cool to show off your speakers. This was before the i-Dock-it boom. The "sock around the MDF" look may not be for everybody either. Def Tech has sleeker options now, but I still prefer these at this price point for looks and performance.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just went from 50+lbs 3-way wood boxes (Klipsch) to Definitive Technology 350 monitors. Sound is very open, natural, and fills my small space with full listening joy. If you like the surround type of listening such as movies/events invest in a good Sub for more impact. A very good investment in quality listening enjoyment.

    Good Versatile Speaker

Written By Tom, Rochester NY on Sunday, October 31, 2010

I "went small" a year ago, replacing old Polks in my acoustically-challenged living room -- had SM350s as fronts, DefTech ProMonitors as surrounds, with a CLR2002 center -- the SM350s were very clear and full for their size, much better for music than movies/TV, but I was asking too much of them to handle the load for the room width and height -- I added a second ProSub, and was constantly tweaking settings to try to get more out of this setup

I recently picked up a pair of BP7004s for the fronts, and moved the SM350s to surrounds -- in that role, they are excellent -- have them running thru a ProSub 1000 with crossover at 60Hz, and they deliver very clear highs and much more depth than any previous surrounds I've had

In a small room these would a very good choice for either a 2-channel system or as fronts for a small home theater setup, because of their range and clarity. In larger rooms, they are definitely best-suited as surrounds.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must admit that I was a bit cautious when i first read reviews on the 350 studio monitors. They are so small and compact compared to the other speakers that i was considering. So i went for a demo, and i wasn't very impressed with the way they were setup for demo (their in a very large room), so their true colors wouldn't shine under the circumstances. So i ordered a set from Crutchfield's outlet center, just going on my gut instinct to try them at home. Man, these speakers are truly amazing, and the more you use them the better they sound. They even make my other speakers sound so much better!! I highly recommend the 350's for any home setup.
