Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA SPEC iPod® Interface for Honda

by Tim Sprinkle

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your Honda or Acura, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA SPEC's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible Honda/Acura factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. And the interface charges your iPod while it's connected.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. As the iPod interface uses the CD changer port, any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Control Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following control modes.

    • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 5 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
    • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but you can manually control your iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice.
    • Dual Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times. (May be referred to as "Hybrid Mode" in some manuals.)

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Playlist Names: In order for the adapter/factory radio to recognize a playlist, it must be named HONDA1... through HONDA5... Text can follow the Honda name and number, such as HONDA3_artistname or HONDA2-jazz. If no designated "HONDA" playlists are created, the interface automatically relates to the first five available playlists on the iPod to DISC number 1 to 5 regardless of Playlist's naming.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA11-HON there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. The aux input is accessed at disc 6 track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. When using the aux input the Play All mode is moved to the Disc 5 slot and the HONDA5 custom playlist is lost. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 is set to the "Off" position.

Controls: Use the Radio's Disc Select controls to access the 5 custom mobile playlists, the Play All mode, and the auxiliary input. Track select, forward and backward, works just like on a CD. Other commands include shuffle play, scan (plays first 10 seconds of each track), repeat play, Fast Track Search (skips forward or backward 10 tracks), and Fast Forward/Fast Reverse within a song (available in shuffle mode only).

Battery Charge: The PA11-HON charges the iPod battery when connected.

CD Changer Port: The adapter uses the factory radio's CD Changer port so if the vehicle has an existing outboard CD Changer it must be disconnected.

Pause: When a non iPod source is selected on the radio (AM/FM/Cass/CD) the iPod pauses.

Resume: If the iPod is not disconnected after use, it will resume playing where it left off when you restart the vehicle. If you're listening to a Honda playlist portably and you plug the iPod into the adapter, playback continues from the previous spot.

    spec adapter for honda

Written By honda happy, Noblesville, IN on Tuesday, December 25, 2012
Installed in a 2005 Honda Civic
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Other than the time consuming process of getting to the factory stereo in the 2005 Honda civic, it was a very simple and efficient install. The item works flawlessly and gives great sound through the iPod interface as well as from any phone with the phono jack.
    Pros:
Easy connection. No power has to be run because of the connection through the cd changer plug.
    Cons:
    None

USA SPEC iPod® Interface for Honda

Written By Anonymous, Scranton, PA on Friday, July 13, 2012
Installed in a 2000 Honda Odyssey
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was very easy to install and our family is loving the iPod capability in our 2000 Honda Odyssey. The only reason I took off one star is that there is a periodic audio issue (clicking sound) when the iPod cable is bent at any sort of an angle. We have to be careful to ensure that the cable is not bent when it is attached to the iPod. It took me no longer than one hour to install and the directions provided were very clear. Overall, this is a very good product.
    Pros:
Easy to install. Great compatibility with existing Honda audio system.
    Cons:
Clicking noise when cable connecting iPod is bent.

    Perfect iPod integration

Written By Perfect- 1998 Volvo iPod integration, Hickory Creek, TX on Saturday, January 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit (along with the extra cable required to work with a Volvo) works perfectly for integrating the iPod to my SC-900 Volvo radio. The iPod can be controlled from the radio or the iPod itself, and the unit even charges the iPod. I find it is easier to pick playlists from the iPod and use the radio controls to change tracks.

Fat plug doesn't work with iPhone cases

Written By Tim, West Hollywood, CA on Saturday, January 28, 2012
Installed in a 2002 Honda Civic EX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation wasn't too bad. Rather than remove the whole stereo/AC assembly on my '02 Civic, I was able to only remove the ligher-socket panel and reach up through that opening to plug in the iPod interface. There is only one other jack on the back of the stereo so it isn't too hard to find. Maneuvering your hand up there is another story... (It was lucky I was able to reach up there, because the stereo/AC assembly was screwed in so tight I'm not sure I'd ever be able to remove it The interface seems great so far. The one gripe I have is the plug is fat (unlike the Apple standard iPod connector) so it doesn't fit if you have a case on your iPhone. (I am using a Speck Candy Shell hard case on my iPhone 4S.) I guess I will have to go buy some sort of extension so I don't have to constantly remove the case from my phone...annoying!!!
    Pros:
    Works great so far.
    Cons:
Fat plug requires you to remove the case from your iPhone.

Great product, for the most part

Written By Dan D, Texas on Saturday, June 11, 2011
Installed in a 2000 Honda Accord
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first I was only getting sound from one side of car. I took out the stereo and cleaned connections with acetone. put the stereo back in and then realized it was the cable that crutchfield sent, the one that runs from the bottom of the ipod to the converter box. I then hooked up an RCA cable to the alternate ports on the converter and just use the ipod connection to charge the ipod. Everything works like a charm. I'm very pleased, I feel like I have a new car.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took me 15 minutes to install the unit in a 2005 Honda Civic. The tricky part is
prying up all the Honda interior pieces to get to the back of the radio. Be patient
and take your time when prying. A putty knife comes in handy. Crutchfields'
Master sheet is really helpful, but the USA SPEC installation and operating
instructions are hard to understand. But don't worry, you can do it!

Easy to install, works perfect with OEM head unit and steering wheel controls.

The only down is that is cost as much as a new head unit with more and better
    ipod controls.

    Honda iPod Radio Adaptor

Written By Koni, SoCal on Saturday, February 26, 2011
Installed in a 2003 Honda Civic
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product because of other users reviews. Unless you have the right tools to remove the radio/ac vent dash unit, I wouldn't recommend self install, you will damage your dash! I had a pro radio installer do this instead. Well from the get go my iPod (5th gen) locked up every time I turned off the car. I thought maybe I did something wrong or it just a one time thing. Well after multiple iPod lockups, I called Crutchfield tech support (very good service), they called the manufactor & called me back within 30 minutes with instructions to reset the adaptor unit. Not easy since it was installed behind the dash, had my installer do this- same problem. Called Crutchfield again & asked for a RMA to return the unit & refund. They were very understanding & sent me the rma with return postage included. I will end up having a Alpine unit with full ipod control installed, I believe a much better choice. Crutchfield gets a A+, USA-Spec unit gets a F-. Maybe I got a defective unit, but it is way too much hassle to reinstall, so unless you want to keep the factory radio & have limited Ipod functions- 4 playlists only available, I my opinion just get a better radio with full ipod control.

I put this adapter in a few years back and initially it worked fine, that's not the case anymore. It rarely interfaces with the stereo anymore and causes the iPod to continually scroll through screens. Pulled it out this week out of frustration.

Great product. I bought this device and installed it in my '02 Civic SI and have been

Iphone 4), you can also use the AUX jack to connect a portable dvd player, satellite radio,
or gps. It also charges your Iphone faster than any wall outlet. Install took about an hour.

iPod Integration for 2003 Acura TL with Nav

Written By Dileep, Houston TX on Wednesday, February 16, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did an extensive online search for an iPod intergration for 2003 Acura TL. This is the only one which could actually use the steering wheel controls. This is a great product and works as advertised. The sound quality is awesome. However, as I read before on some acura user forums, sometimes the radio shows error message when I have to key in the radio code. This happened to me twice in almost a month. Its not a deal breaker as I memorized my radio code now and just in minutes I'll be back playing music. I think taking the proces step by step helps in reducing these issues. First turn on the car-switch off the stereo-connect the iPhone/iPod-turn on the stereo and enjoy the music. For disconnecting, turn off stereo and then disconnect the iPod. I'm not sure this is a fix but helps.

I could have purchased this for less elsewhere online. However for a painless experience I would prefer Crutchfield.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been using mine in a Volvo 850 with an iPhone 4. It works well enough, able to listen to
music after an initial delay. It takes up to 30 seconds for the unit to respond after plugging in
my iPhone. It defaults to CD selection 5 which chooses songs at random. I change to 6 so I
can choose songs via the iPhone itself. Though there is another delay.
The iPhone also displays a warning that the unit is not compatible, but it does work.

Installed in a 2003 Honda Pilot
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed on my wife's 2005 Honda Pilot; she loves it. The instructions were adequate, but once you have the dashboard open, it is pretty obvious how to install. The PIN/DIP switches took a little effort to confirm what works on the type of ipod/iphone, but no complaints.

I purchased this for my wife so she doesn't have to lug all her CDs. I got here an Ipod Touch for Christmas and the Ipod adapter just before we went on vacation in July. Driving and listening with all the music on the Ipod and this adapter just makes life so much easier, interesting and fun.

My three girls sat in the car as I installed the adapter; the hardest part was prying the dash off without damage, then making sure I didn't lose any screws. Everyone is very happy to have a large music catalog. Only complaint is the adapter is relatively large. Haven't had any issues for heat (in the Summer) and will have to wait to see how it does in the Winter. Definitely worth buying the adapter instead of a new stereo.

Crutchfield advisors were on the mark!

    Does the job well

Written By BrandonD, Houston, Tx on Sunday, October 03, 2010
Installed in a 2004 Honda Pilot
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received this item when expected as well as received all the components in working condition. Installing this component was fairly easy outside of learning how to disassemble a 2004 Honda PIlot Dash Console. They provided plenty of cable length which left me with a good number of options for where to install it. The sound is pretty good. It seems that when I first played music through it, there was a little bit of loss in the audio quality but having used it for several weeks now, I don't really notice anything. If anything, it might be a little bit quieter than what the CD player produces. The only somewhat annoying thing is that there is usually a bit of button pushing everything I connect my iPhone to it and run the radio. I have to "dismiss" the notification on the iPhone about it not being "approved". Then it starts playing something in playlist mode, which I then select "CD-5" on my changer to access it in song mode and not in playlist. At that point, the iPhone is quick to black out and I have to unlock the screen at least once. Once I get going, it's pretty smooth. I think these issues are small being that this is an aftermarket solution. I do like that the iPhone stays in charge mode while hooked up. I have also run the L/R Component jacks through the dash via Component -> 1/8" cable. This is just in case I want to play something other than an iPod. Overall, this is a solid product. I recommend it.
