Polk Audio

Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Our take on the Polk Audio PSW10

by Tom Mathew

Add serious low-frequency impact to your movies and music with Polk's PSW10. This powered subwoofer delivers solid, accurate bass thanks to its 50-watt RMS amp and 10" woofer. The cabinet is constructed from non-resonant MDF, and is reinforced with internal bracings for superior bass clarity. The PSW10 is a great way to round out a home theater system or add depth to your stereo music.

Polk makes it easy to integrate the PSW10 with your existing system. You can hook your receiver up to the sub either through the line-level or the speaker-level connections. And the continuously variable low-pass crossover lets you tailor the sound to match the PSW10 with the rest of your speakers.

Highlights:

  • bass-reflex (ported) enclosure
  • 50-watt RMS amplifier
  • 10" front-firing driver
  • frequency response 40-160 Hz (-3dB)
  • continuously variable 80-160 Hz crossover

    Features

Driver: The PSW10 uses a 10" Dynamic Balance polymer composite cone driver for deep, smooth response and low distortion. For longer excursion, the woofer uses a hi-roll foam surround.

Not Video Shielded: The subwoofer is not magnetically shielded, so it is not recommended to place it next to TVs and video monitors.

Amplifier: The subwoofer is powered by a high-current amplifier producing 50 watts RMS/100 watts dynamic power.

Enclosure: The PSW10 features non-resonant MDF construction with 3/4" baffle and internal bracing for deep bass impact with superior detail and accuracy.

3-Way Power Switch: The subwoofer has a 3-way power switch on the rear panel. You can select Auto, which turns the unit on automatically when an input signal is received and off a few minutes after the signal stops; On, which keeps the unit on until it is switched off, and Off, which turns the unit completely off (instead of placing it in a standby mode). The LED power indicator glows green when the unit is on and red when the unit is off.

Volume Control: The PSW10 has a rotary volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the system.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to select normal or reverse. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass attack.

Low-Pass Filter: The PSW10 offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 80-160 Hz. Note: The manual incorrectly lists the frequency range as 80-200Hz.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

Line Inputs: The subwoofer has gold plated left and right RCA Line Level inputs. These inputs are for use with electronics featuring stereo pre-amp line outputs or an LFE subwoofer output. If your receiver or processor only has a single subwoofer line output, either the left or right input jack can be used.

Note: If the filtered Low Frequency Effects (LFE) output of an A/V receiver or processor is connected to the PSW10's line inputs, low frequency signals will be filtered by the A/V receiver/processor and the PSW10. When this happens the PSW10's low-pass filter setting should be as high as possible (160Hz) to minimize the interaction between the filters.

Speaker Level Input/Output: The subwoofer has spring clips for the speaker level input and output. The subwoofer's low-pass filter takes the low frequencies (based on the setting of the filter) and passes a full-range signal out to the speakers. This is the recommended method of connecting the subwoofer with a Polk Audio RM-series Home Theater speaker package and other satellite speaker systems.

    Specification Note

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response for the subwoofer is 35-200 Hz, and the -3 dB frequency response is 40-160 Hz.

    Warranty Notes

Amplifier: The warranty on the amplifier is 3 years parts and labor.

Driver: The warranty on the driver is 5 years parts and labor.

Outstanding performance and quality for the price

Written By No, Naples, FL on Tuesday, November 24, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the non-powered sub from my Acoustimass Bose cube setup with this unit and I am floored with the improvement. This sub was a perfect compliment and solved my sound quality problem. I highly recommend Sparky in sales, who helped guide me through some targeted questions that led to this purchase. If you need to add a powered sub to your system there's no reason in my mind to avoid this product.

    Impressive Sound and Unbeatable Value

Written By Keith, Albuquerque, NM on Thursday, October 15, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub is a good example for why you don't have to spend a lot of money for good audio equipment. I figured in this price range that it would sound good, but it sounds great. The adjustable crossover, phase switch, and volume control permit you to tune it perfectly for the best sound. I have an LCD TV that has a good built-in sound bar for the highs and mid-range, but the low end was lacking. This sub really improved the sound and makes movies and music "come alive" with loud and clean bass that you can actually feel.

No LFE? Not a Problem...Crank the Hz!

Written By Grant, Wa. State Coast on Tuesday, October 13, 2009

I just wanted to chime in here and hopefully help someone if they're concerned about no LFE IN on the PSW10. I was concerned myself with this so I spent a LOT of time researching this "problem" before buying 2 of them (yeah 2!). ALL you need to do is connect to EITHER the right or left RCA input on the sub (either one will do because of the design)..and CRANK the Hz to the MAX on the sub. This (MAX Hz on sub) bypasses the internal crossover on the sub allowing you to use your reciever for crossover settings. But MAX the Hz on the sub. I eventually did plug into both L-R using Y adaptors to give the signal a little more boost..the "auto on/off" feature wasn't getting a strong enough signal. (That won't improve the sound, it just gives the signal a little boost) For 2 subs, I'm using a Y adaptor from the LFE out on my receiver, 2 cables from that (1 to each sub), and a Y adaptor connected to each cable..that way I'm using both L-R on each sub. Works great. (I got a great deal on the 2nd sub, so I couldn't resist using two!) I hope this helped and saved someone some "research time". BTW..this info is not MY OPINION, it's advice I got from POLK. Enjoy your new toy(s)! BTW..I gave it 4 stars because there's always better....it's a good sub but I wouldn't go as far as to say GREAT...I have a fairly small room and use my "stuff" for mostly movies (via PS3) and tv, and it does a nice job for that. Can't comment on music.

Thank You Crutchfield. I ordered this Sub along with my Denon AVR-1609 on
Monday afternoon and received everything on Wednesday afternoon. Couldn't be
happier. Great service, great sub, great receiver, and what a deal. I didn't know
what to expect from a sub of this price, but I am more than impressed ; so is my
wife. I will definitely be back again soon. Thanks again Crutchfield ;-) Chaz

    Polk Audio PSW10

Written By Brian, Carbondale, IL on Tuesday, April 07, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub is the perfect solution to my audio needs. I found it to be very smooth and punchy. It has a nice regulation nob thats not wild like some others. I replaced a lower end Bose sub with this and what an unbelievable upgrade! You cannot beat the price matched with quality on this sub. I have higher end Bose everything else except Polk outdoor speakers, (which are terrific) and after making this switch, I will subsequently be transitioning to all POLK!

This subwoofer sounds great. I purchased an inexpensive subwoofer with my old system and often got distorted sound with it. This subwoofer sounds great with music. I have not yet watched a movie with lots of sound effects but from what I have heard so far, I have no doubt that this subwoofer will produce great bass sounds when I do. A great addition to my home theater system.

This subwoofer transforms the sound of my entertainment system. You can
tailor the sound to give a subtle bass feel or max it out to provide strong
punch to movies and music. I have a small den and this model is perfect for

    The little engine that could

Written By Luigi, Erie, PA on Tuesday, January 27, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I actually got this subwoofer at no charge when I purchased four other Polk Audio speakers. I considered upgrading and paying the difference for a bigger subwoofer prior to purchasing it because some people had said it was not very powerful. I am glad I stuck with this unit because it can pump out all the bass I need to fill a very large room (45 by 25 feet). This sub actuall replaced a more powerful (higher wattage), but way older unit. My guess is that it should satisfy 95 percent of the people out there looking for great bass at a good price.

    Great Starter Sub

Written By Mark, Hilo, HI on Sunday, January 18, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I previously owned a Bose acoustamass 5, and Onkyo HTB and this sub
with my Polk Monitor 50/30/CS2 center sounds great. I currently live in a
small studio and it makes enough bass to disrupt others. The low rumbly
movie bass is fine, while retaining a musical quality for music. It probably
won't fill a large room so if your budget allows for something more powerful
and you enjoy theater quality bass you will need to look higher in the Polk
    Lineup.

    Not Bad

Written By WK, Maryland on Sunday, January 18, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well after 2 days of almost constant use on movies and music I can say this is a decent Subwoofer both sound and look. Set up was pretty easy with the crossover and volume controls at the halfway points ,By the way the 50 watts power rating on this unit is impressive as it will fill a nice size room 16X15. My 2 dislikes and there truly small dislikes are the lack of LFE input and the auto on power setting is very slow to respond to a signal after 15 minutes so its best to leave it on all the time unless you are not using it for several days.

    Brings up the rear

Written By IGO, Las vegas on Wednesday, December 17, 2008

These were offered as a bonus when I purchased a set ofFXi 6A Surrounds. The surrounds were to replace a vintage RT 7 Polk bookshelf speaker that got religated to stands in my bedroom. Very handy as the sub now resides with them. The RT7s just needed a liitle bit of bottom end and this sub does just the trick. DO NOT try to boogy thump this sub.

    Great sub for the money

Written By edavis, Cincinnati, OH on Wednesday, December 17, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I actually got this sub as part of a Polk speaker package. I was really suprised how well this sub performs. Although it only goes down to 40Hz, I could feel the bass. It blends well with my Polk Monitor 40s, CS2, and OWM3 speakers for an outstanding home theater system. Yes there are better subs out there that will reach all the way down to 20Hz, but for the money this one performs very well. I'm actually ordering another one for my 7.2 set-up.

We are very satisfied with the quality of this subwoofer. We purchased the exact model two years ago for our family room. We purchased this one for our media room which has a 9:1 surround system. It replaced a large and more expensive sub that stopped functioning properly. The sound quality of movies and music from the Polk is exceptional; Great quality and a very reasonable price.

    Great for the Money

Written By Ed, Umatilla, FL on Friday, October 24, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must agree that for the money, this is hard to beat. I do not have a perfectly matched theater system. I am using a pair of ancient front speakers, with rears and a Polk center. This sub blends great with music or movies. As others have pointed out, this is no $ 1000.00 Velodyne. But if you need to add a bottom and are on a budget, this will meet your needs. I could not be happier with this purchase. Crutchfield is the best!

    My first subwoofer

Written By Harry, Upstate NY on Wednesday, October 08, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For years I've stubbornly refused to buy into the whole subwoofer 'thing', but finally bit the bullet with the PSW10 to augment my 5 classic series speakers and Onkyo TX-502 receiver. Felt it was time to get a 'fuller' audio experience with the new Samsung 40" HDTV, but didn't want to lay out big bucks or have it 'dominate' the soundtrack. I am impressed! The thunderous tones from its 50 watts(?) actually seemed a bit too much in our 12x24 living space, so I moved it to my personal stereo in the den, where it complements my RTi4 bookshelf speakers perfectly! Bought an inexpensive Sony s/w to hook up to the HT which seems a good fit. I've become a big Polk fan in recent years - the PSW10 is one more reason why. Crutchfield remains the very, very best.

Don't be fooled by the low price and 50 watt amp, this baby performs! Action movies come to life with explosions that rattle windows and it also performs well for music: metal, rap, anything. If you listen to music at VERY loud levels buy a larger sub, but for up to 3/4 volume the PSW10 will handle it all!

    First-Class Entry Level Sub

Written By Michael, Burke, VA on Wednesday, September 03, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I based my 5/5 rating on this being a lower-powered, entry level sub. I am not comparing it to the $500+ dollar subs!!

I have a small living room and a modest home theater setup, so I dont really need more than 100wpc. I was looking for a sub that could give me tremendous power with clarity and a "focused" punch. This sub performs all those tasks without a problem! It definitely "sounds" like it performs well above its stated wpc rating.

I only have the sub level turned up to about 5, and whether I am watching my Led Zep or Who DVDs, or that legendary first scene in Fellowship of the Ring, the walls shake and picture frames rattle. Explosions burst into my living room without being muffled or distorted. During the day if my wife is watching MTV or the Food Network, the bass gently accents whatever sounds are coming out of the main speakers without ever overpowering them, or forcing me to change the volume level of the sub.

It is built like a rock (I purchased mine in the scratch & dent store - only a tiny nick) and matches my other Polk speakers' cherry finish perfectly.

My uncle likes to spend a lot of money on his a/v setup, and I always laugh to myself when I see him fiddling w/ or cursing at his $750 sub! I know that back in my living room, this puppy is just waiting for me to pump some audio thru it and I wont have to do a thing...other than dust it off occasionally.

I cant believe its only 50 watts!

Written By Matt, Harrisonburg, VA on Sunday, December 02, 2007

When I bought this I had never heard one these subs before and I was just hoping it would be adequate. After the very simple hookups were done, I put the speaker through its paces. Man, I was impressed! Listening to the bass I would have guessed the wattage closer to 150 watts! Bass is smooth and deep with a rock-solid feel. In my quiet neighborhood, this thing could easily bring the cops to my house if I let it. I recommend this speaker for all your subwoofer needs (unless your needs include opening a dance club).
