Pioneer

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-7300BT

by Ken Nail

Pioneer designed the DEH-7300BT CD receiver for all you iPod® fans who also want hands-free calling. When a call comes in, this Pioneer will mute the music and allow you to take the call on your compatible phone without taking your hands off the wheel — an important safety advantage on your busy commute. Plug your iPod into the USB input, and you can use the Pioneer's controls to run the show. Once connected, the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its own high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible.

All the music you want to play
The DEH-7300BT plays all your CDs, including those with MP3 and WMA files burned onto them. You can use the handy front-panel USB input for thumb drives packed with music files, and you'll see song titles and other info clearly displayed in bright white characters on the high-definition OEL screen. The front panel auxiliary input is handy for plugging in a satellite radio, gaming device, or another audio source.

A sound investment
Pioneer's Easy EQ 3-band equalizer gives you excellent control over the receiver's sound. The Advanced Sound Retriever is tailored specifically for your audio files, reversing the compression process to give you more high-freqency sparkle and musical detail.

The built-in amplifier delivers plenty of power for good, clean sound. The two sets of preamp outputs offer a convenient connection to a full system with external amplifiers, speakers, and subs. You'll find the low-pass filter and level control on the subwoofer preamp outputs handy for adjusting the bass from the driver's seat.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

White OEL Display: The DEH-7300BT features a bright white OEL Display (1-line/10-Character) that can display upper- and lower-case characters. This display makes it easy to read and cycle through song titles, artists, and other texts.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-7300BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-7300BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-7300BT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-7300BT features a 3-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary commander.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-7300BT is equipped with a 3-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat. The Custom band can be adjusted as follows:

    • Bass: +/- 6dB at 100 Hz
    • Mid: +/- 6dB at 1 kHz
    • Treble: +/- 6dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Dual 2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-7300BT features two pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs (Front & Rear/SW). The unit's rear preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.

Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is configured as a subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-7300BT supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Great Bluetooth, otherwise I hate it

Written By HCSGuy, San Jose, CA on Thursday, April 26, 2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Bluetooth is the best I have used, though that's mainly because it has a corded microphone that you have to run around the windshield to a visor to mount it. Sound quality is also good, and the inclusion of both USB/iPod and an Aux jack for other players on the front panel is nice. However, tuner sensitivity is poor - local channels that my stock Dodge radio received great are interrupted by hiss on this unit. Also, the user interface is reprehensible - you hold down a small, barely labelled button for Off and input selection, which I would assume are important functions. Larger, backlit buttons perform minor functions, and the screen seems to always be unreadable due to glare. Lastly, it doesn't seem to actually turn off - hold down the off button and sound stops, but you are still assaulted with all the video game-like lights and scrolling display reading "Pioneer" - when I get time, I'll read the mediocre owners manual and see if there are any options on this. If it wasn't for the bluetooth, this would be going back. Oh, and the remote control only works within a 90deg cone of the reciever - it doesn't work if I hold it near the steering wheel, but it works great from the back seat.
    Pros:
    Great Bluetooth
    Cons:
Horrible front panel layout, User interface, and disappointing tuner.

Always end up coming back to Crutchfield

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a notorious researcher and always try to find a better deal. Typically I can find the products slightly cheaper somewhere else but I rarely find a better value than with Crutchfield. All the extras you get with their car audio products make it well worth a few dollars more. This Pioneer car stereo went in my daughter's 2001 Civic and she and her b/f actually installed it with relative ease (and I thought I'd have to). She's very pleased with it other than the factory speakers that I just ordered replacements for (Crutchfield as well). It looks good, sounds good (soon to be great) and for $150ish, was as good a value as I could find at the time.
    Pros:
CF backed, great instructions, good value
    Cons:
Interface is so-so but better than many.

The Pioneer Is working very well both as a sound source - IPad, CD, radio - and as a blue tooth phone receiver with my Samsung phone. I am considering buying another for my work truck. It was easy to install and works, with the adapter, with the steering wheel controls, The drawback is not being able to read the display in the daylight. I bought it for the features and not to be 'cool'. Who would buy something just to be 'cool'?

I've had Pioneer since I had my first car (it's been a while), and I couldn't be happier with this upgrade installation from my last Pioneer. Bluetooth is breeze to set up with iPhone and works perfect, I have yet to get the complaint of an "echo" heard by person on other end, like most hands-free will do. Pandora and iPod will play immediately when connected to phone. This is def worth the investment if you want many options from a stereo with good sound.
    Pros:
Good sound. Remote included. Compatable with pandora and iPod. Bluetooth works great! Does everything I needed.

Great product if you are looking for bluetooth in your car.
    Pros:
The bluetooth is awesome. Works better then my Jawbone receiver which was about the same price.
    Cons:
    The buttons are very small.

    Good for the $$

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install was very easy with the supplied kit. After playing around for a bit the should was much better then the stock Ford Ranger system. I found the menus easy to use it only took about 3 min to figure it all out. I wish it had separate rear and sub RCA outputs. Also it would have been nice if you did not have to unplug the AUX in or USB to remove the face plate.
    Pros:
Well made easy to use and install. Sound is not bad but could be better with a little more power or a add on small amp like Alpine would be nice. BT is easy to use as well as the Ipod functions.
    Cons:
Display is WAY TO BRIGHT!!! You can land airplanes or guide ships into the habor with this thing. Pioneer either needs to add the dimmer circuit back in or have a setting in a menu. I was able to fix the all to bright display by gently opening up the face plate and installing 4 small pieces of Kapton tape over the LEDs under the 4 large clear buttons. Now it is much better at night and I did not notice any issues in the day time either.

    Installed for my Teenager

Written By JackA, NYNY on Thursday, November 10, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Teenager's have enough things to distract them. Talking on the phone and/or changing radio stations are probably the two biggest distractions. This radio lets my daughter plug in her iPod before she pulls out of the driveway, and allows her to answer the phone hands free if a call comes in. To me, it's worth it's weight in gold.
    Pros:
Hooks up to my kid's iPod, enables her to talk on her cell phone hands free.
    Cons:
Maybe I'm old, but I find these radios a little hard to navigate.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to replace a stock head unit. It has more than enough power to handle two new Pioneer 6 3/4" three-way speakers and existing external component tweeters. Even though it lists just 3 bands of equalization, the amount of adjustment is more than enough. The added loudness adjustment and tone control adjustments allow for even more fine tuning of the sound output. Everything works as promised. The hands-free BT phone works flawlessly and sounds great both incoming and outgoing. The installation was a breeze with the great kit supplied by Crutchfield.

The bottom line, this unit sounds great and at this price is a super value. I highly recommend the 7300BT.

    Nice Upgrade

Written By MikeVikesFan, New Jersey on Friday, October 07, 2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Second attempt at getting better sound in my '04 Wrangler. First was adding decent sub and speakers which made the aftermarket JVC unit the previous owner installed still seem inadequate even with the expanded bass thumping. After the 1 hour install - made very easy by Crutchfield's MasterSheets, wiring harness, antenna, etc. - I was very pleased with the result. This unit is a definite upgrade not only for the sound but for the added features. Yes, takes some time to figure out the bells and whistles but quite enjoyable now (3 weeks later). BTW, I ran the microphone wire up through the roll bar and have no problem with the phone.

    Sound Quality is excellent

I just purchased this stereo, and install took only but 30 minutes.

BT Sound: It was raining heavily that day and the person I was speaking to had no problems hearing me with road noise and rain noise combined. My car is ten years old, and it still kept the sound quality great.

Good product if you have a iPhone. It connects with no problems every time you turn on your car etc. Good purchase.

    Good quality receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second Pioneer receiver I have purchased (the first was stolen ) from Crutchfield and it has not disappointed. Looks great, good volume and quality (on old Honda Accord speakers), Bluetooth setup and call quality for phone works well, music from USB drive relatively easy to access even though the search capability of use was not as good as my previous Pioneer. On the downside, the wiring hookup instructions led me down the wrong path but the great technical support at Crutchfield came to the rescue. Good value and would recommend it for anyone looking for a solid functional receiver that is easy to use.

    good for the $

Written By Stage, Boulder, CO on Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Overall a nice unit with lots of options and connectivity for the money. The main reason i bought it was for the connectivity, they could drop the CD entirely and save some money IMO.

Sound quality is great and it has enough power to push 4 middle grade Kenwood coaxial 6.5"'s. The install and phone setup was easier than i expected.

    The cons are:

Usability and navigating the menu's are simply not user intuitive. You get use to it but i wasn't impressed on the functionality. Still haven't figured out why the BT won't autoconnect once the head unit comes on. There is also no off button on the unit which is annoying especially when you can't dim the lighting on it. You can hit the button to remove the face and that shuts it down but i question how good that is on the unit.

I'd give it 3 stars if it wasn't so inexpensive but for the price I know you get what you pay for.

I bought this receiver as a replace for my 5 year old Blapunkt that did not have the new features I wanted. The IPhone connectivity is great, and it charges. The handsfree bluetooth works great as well. The radio works good, but the tweaking can a little twicky...especially if dont read instrutions..haha. I have it connected to a Sony Xplode 10" sub, it sounds great but I had to turn my amp up just a little to get the same bass. Overall is the best receiver I have ever had and have owned just about one of each of the major brands over the years.

    Almost perfect!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was a cinch with the included gear (Thanks, Crutchfield!), even for my first ever install.

The Good: The unit does its job well, radio is clear as expected, CD playback works well, iPod control and USB thumbdrive file access is very handy and sounds great. Bluetooth is loud and clear, people on the other end of the call have no complaints. Mic cord is exceptionally long, easy to run anywhere you want. Paired up with my Droid X effortlessly, re-pairs automatically.

The Indifferent: Blue LEDs can't be dimmed, but don't seem to bother me. I don't do much night driving. Doesn't seem to be a way to turn the unit completely off once turned on. Holding the off button just puts it back to the scrolling Pioneer logo. (Might be I haven't read deep enough in the docs to figure that out, though, so not really a negative except for the ambiguous controls)

The Meh: No voice dial, only phone book which is not safe to do while driving. Dialing from phone is easier, especially if you have a car mount. Contacted Pioneer support, they submitted the request to engineers. Hopefully a future firmware will have it but I'm not holding my breath. Had to knock off a star for that because it's a very bad oversight. Folders on USB driver are numbered, not names, yet it can display the folder name while playing music inside the folder.

The Bad: Nothing really bad about the unit. Some disappointments (See "meh" above) but I would still highly recommend it for the price+features.
