Nikon

Our take on the Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II lens

by Tara W.

Capture crystal-clear closeups of distant subjects with this high-performance lens from Nikon. It's designed for premium optical performance with their SLR cameras, like the D90 or D300s. A large maximum aperture throughout the focal range means you'll be able to capture well-exposed photos, even when shooting in lower light with slower shutter speeds. Get great pictures of friends around a campfire or birds on a sunrise hike.

Superior clarity across the entire frame
High-quality Nikon optics ensure accurate, razor-sharp results. A multi-coating on the lens minimizes flare and ghosting. Your photos will be clear and detailed across the entire field of view — from one edge to the other — thanks to seven ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements.

Compensates for hand-held shooting
The lens has built-in vibration reduction so your photos will come out crisp in all different sorts of lighting conditions. Built-in motion sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly compensating for camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where slower shutter speeds and hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens.

    Features

Overview: This item is an AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm, f/2.8G ED VR II, telephoto lens, optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness with the Nikon FX (23.9 x 36mm) image sensors. It is also compatible with camera bodies using the DX format (APS-C image sensors, 15.7mm x 23.7mm).

Construction: The seven Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements ensure sharp pictures virtually free of color fringing.

Nano Crystal Coat: The Nano Crystal Coat deposited on some of the lens elements ensures that fine, clear images can be reproduced under various shooting conditions, from the sunny outdoors to spotlighted interior scenes.

Built-in CPU: The lens has a built-in CPU which allows it to communicate with the camera body for focus and exposure functions. A set of CPU contacts is located on the lens mount for interfacing with the camera body.

Auto Focus: Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet autofocusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject-working distance through the focus range. Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation. The manual/auto focus mode switch allows quick response to situations requiring manual focus operation.

Zoom Control: The lens features a large, textured manual zoom ring for easy zooming control.

Vibration Reduction (VR II): Vibration reduction minimizes the effects of camera shake, allowing you to shoot handheld at as many as 4 shutter speed stops slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images. You can turn vibration reduction on or off with the switch on the side of the lens. VR has two modes; Normal and Active (designed for use with strong vibrations, such as taking pictures while in a moving vehicle).

Aperture: Because there is no aperture ring on this lens, the aperture must be set on the camera.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a fully-automatic, 9-blade diaphragm that produces a nearly circular aperture. Out-of-focus images in front of or behind the subject are rendered as pleasing blurs.

Tripod Collar: The tripod collar is detachable; it can be removed when not needed.

Focus Range Limit: If your subject is always more than 16 feet 5 inches away, the focus limit switch allows you to fix the focus range at 5m-infinity to reduce focusing time (available in autofocus mode only).

    Nikkor 70-200mm & Crutchfield's Customer Service!

Written By Steve, Holtsville, NY on Friday, March 08, 2013

First, the Nikkor deserves 10 stars "out of 5"!! The VRII stabilization is superb, the colors (without flash, or much of available light) are vivid and bright, as if taken in good light, the build quality is evident the minute you lay your eyes on it.

Second, I had a small issue with the 1st lens I received, but the great customer service people at Crutchfield didn't even blink an eye before THEY suggested sending me a replacement lens, which I received in no time. Thank you crutchfield for giving me the golden-glove treatment!!
    Pros:
Great VR (II), Great color, excellent sharpness.
    Cons:
    None!

El mejor Telephoto que puedan comprar! Best Telephoto lens you can buy

Written By Rafy V, Ponce, PR on Saturday, January 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before buying this lens I had a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 II, a lens that came out super good but of course having no image stabilizer made it difficult for me to shoot at slow speeds. I'm a wedding photographer, and this lens (Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II) was the perfect upgrade to my beloved sigma. The lens focuses very fast and never fails. The bokeh it produces is beautiful. I've only tested on two D700 bodies so I have no idea how it performs with the DX. My recommendation is that if you have the money BUY without thinking, no regrets.
    Pros:
rápido y certero enfoque, no flare fast and accurate focus, no flare
    Cons:
    pesado, precio heavy, price

Is that a 55 gal drum on your camera?

Written By f64, L.A. CA on Tuesday, October 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first put this lens on my d800 my first thought was "what were you thinking?" There's no doubt that this thing is somewhat of a beast and takes a little getting used to. And here's the real irony - I shoot mostly medium format and always have, you would think the weight wouldn't even be a consideration. It's possible that it feels heavy because it so unbalances the camera. At any rate, you might need to hit the gym before a long shoot. All that being said, this lens is a beauty. It focuses fast and accurately, it's tack sharp, and has a wonderful bokeh. The VR is effective in calming down the massive crane hanging off your camera and you will not even miss the car you had to sell to pay for this. It's an awesome lens.
    Pros:
Well built, smooth zoom and focus, sharp.
    Cons:
May require membership in Gold's gym.

    WHY DID I WAIT

Written By CHARLES, JR., WEST VIRGINIA on Friday, September 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been shooting a Nikon 80-200 2.8 af-d (push/pull) since I purchased it new in 1992. It was a great (is) lens but did not realize that the new 70-200 VRII was so,so,so much better. The focus is dead on unlike the 80-200 which would sometimes focus on the wrong spot. The 70-200 is brite and locks on fast. My first shot was in my living room at 82mm 2.8 1.3s and it was a good useable pic. I took a pic through my dirty window at a church 1-block away and it was super sharp at f5. I don't know why I waited so long to buy this lens. I worked with Drew at Crutchfield and he was very helpful and emailed me status of my order and followed up with me. This is truley great service and that is why I don't mind paying retail.
    Pros:
    Super sharp, fast lens
    Cons:
Don't mind the weight because I have been packing a 80-200 for years.

Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II lens

    Best of the Best

Written By Ray G, New York on Thursday, November 17, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As always, dealing with Crutchfield and ordering this lens was an absolute joy. Their staff was very pleasant and the unit showed up very quickly on my doorstep.

The 70-200 is to me the holy grail of zoom lenses. The focal length is so useful and the consistent f/2.8 aperture gives amazing low light capabilities. The VR II implementation plus the f/2.8 aperture allows for some amazing results where a tripod would normally be mandatory.

This lens does have some drawbacks and that is primarily size. This is a massive lens that is very heavy and will most likely make every camera bag your own obsolete. Due to the size, it's usage seems very deliberate and focused as this is not something you would probably throw on your camera and go for a walk with or drag around on vacation. Also, if you are placing this lens on a smaller body such as a D7000, I would highly recommend the MB-D11 Grip to provide extra leverage on your palm to assist holding up the camera.
    Pros:
Professional Grade build quality with amazing results.
    Cons:
Ergonomics; This is a massive and very heavy lens.
