Sonos

Our take on the Sonos CONNECT

by Tara W.

Enjoy music from your computer and the Internet on any audio system

Play music from your PC and the Internet with the Sonos® CONNECT. This tiny player works with almost any existing audio system — hook it up to a receiver or powered speaker system in any room of your home, and it connects to the Internet and your computer wirelessly through the Sonos BRIDGE (sold separately). You'll be ready to start enjoying music within minutes.

Small player fits almost anywhere

The CONNECT's footprint is remarkably compact — less than 5-1/2" square. Analog and digital audio outputs make it compatible with just about any audio/video receiver or shelf system.

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ phone to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Rhapsody®, Pandora® Internet radio, SiriusXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Rhapsody, Pandora, Spotify, last.fm™, Napster®, and SiriusXM Internet Radio. Rhapsody offers instant access to millions of songs and ad-free radio stations through your Sonos Controller. Sirius Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these two services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. Pandora and last.fm create customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

MOG

MOG — over 15 million songs, available instantly

MOG is an award-winning online music service with one of the largest and best-sounding streaming catalogs in the industry. It's the only service to offer all of its music in the 320 kbps MP3 format — that higher bit rate translates to better sound. In fact, we use it frequently in the Crutchfield Labs to test high-end audio gear. MOG's "Primo" service ($9.99/month) gives you unlimited, ad-free access to their extensive music library of over 15 million songs on a wide range of devices including Sonos® network music players, Samsung TVs, your computer, iPad®, iPhone®, and Android™ devices.

Play music stored on your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®

Sonos now gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored in the Music app of iOS devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices). The system even lets you connect multiple Apple players at once. For instance, you can queue up songs from your iPhone to play in the kitchen while you cook, and your spouse can stream a podcast in the den at the same time.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 Sonos music players in your system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

Highlights:

Features

Overview: The Sonos Connect (formerly the ZP90 Zone Player) works exclusively with the Sonos Digital Music System. In a multi-room sound system, one player is connected to your home network, and each subsequent player can be connected wired or wirelessly to the system. The Connect player is designed to be used with an external amplifier or a pair of powered speakers.

Controls/Indicators: The Connect player's only controls are a mute button and a rocker-type volume control, both mounted on the front of the unit. An LED status indicator flashes white when powering up or connecting to the Sonos Digital Music System, and lights solid white when powered up and connected to the music system.

Zones: You can place a Sonos player in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital Music System can accept up to 32 players (such as the Connect, the amplified Connect:Amp, Play:3 or Play:5). You can control the entire system from a your PC or Mac, your smartphone or tablet (using a free app), or a separate Sonos controller (such as the CR200). With multiple zones, you can choose to play the same song in different rooms, or different songs in different rooms.

Placement: It is not necessary to place the player in a visible place in the home. The transmitting range of the Sonos Digital Music System is approximately 100 feet. Thick walls, microwave ovens, and the presence of other wireless devices can interfere with or block the wireless network signals. When interference occurs, you can relocate the Connect player in order to receive the signal, make a wired (Ethernet) connection, or add a Sonos Bridge between the router and the Connect player to extend the wireless range.

Sonos Controller Software: The supplied setup disc contains the software for the Sonos Controller, which allows you to control the Sonos Digital Music System from your PC or Mac. The supplied Sonos Controller software is compatible with Windows XP (SP3), Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Macintosh OS X (10.6 or higher) operating systems. You can also control the Sonos system with your smartphone or tablet running one of the following apps:

  • Sonos Controller for Android: The free Sonos Controller application is available for Android smartphones or tablets from the Android Market.
  • Sonos Controller for iPhone or iPad: The free Sonos Controller application is available for the iPhone, iPod touch, or the iPad from the Apple App Store, or it can be downloaded from iTunes and synced to your device.

Music Sources: The Sonos Connect can play music from a variety of sources. Any Sonos controller can make a music or source selection. You can choose from the following:

  • Internet Radio: Sonos includes a radio guide that provides immediate access to thousands of free Internet radio stations and broadcast programs.
  • Music Services: You can choose from several music services that provide audio on a per-song, per audiobook, or subscription basis. Some examples include MOG, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Pandora, Slacker, Spotify, Rhapsody, and iHeart radio.
  • Apple iOS Device: The latest software upgrade from Sonos now plays your iTunes music direct from your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad (iOS 6 required) anywhere there is a Sonos speaker or player. No more syncing your Apple mobile device with your computer just to hear your iTunes music on Sonos.
  • Music Folders: The Sonos system can play music from any computer or network-attached storage (NAS) device on your home network where you have shared music folders. The system indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by categories (artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks).

Supported Formats: The Sonos Digital Music System supports the following formats: MP3 (compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC+, iTunes, Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, FLAC (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF (uncompressed).

Simple Installation: Setting up the Connect is quick and easy. No technical or wiring expertise is required and no need to break through walls or re-wire your entire house. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection and a router to get started. One player or Bridge in your system must be connected to the router and all the rest will work wirelessly. You can add more players in more rooms without additional wires.

Network Requirements

Home Network: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

  • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation download rates.)
  • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a router in your home network. If you don't have a router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
    • If you are going to use a Sonos controller application on an Android smartphone, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or other tablet, you may need a wireless router in your home network.
  • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly.
  • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.

Automatic Updates: The Connect allows for free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the Connect and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.

Connections

2-Port Ethernet Switch: There are 2 female RJ-45 connectors for plugging in Category 5 Ethernet cables. You can connect a router, computer, or an additional network device, such as a network-attached storage (NAS) device. Specifications: 10/100 Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX.

Analog Inputs: You can connect an external source, such as a portable music player or a CD player, to the unit's left and right RCA jacks. The input jacks automatically detect a device is connected, and the source appears in the system. Music from the external source can be played in any zone. The volume is controlled by the Sonos Digital Music System, however, the playback (pause, music selection, etc.) must be controlled at the source.

Analog Outputs: The Connect is equipped with stereo RCA jacks for connecting the player to a separate amplifier or receiver. The stereo RCA jacks have a variable audio output, with the volume controlled by your wireless controlling device (iPhone, iPad, etc.), Sonos controller or the Connect's front panel volume controls.

Digital Outputs: The player has both coaxial and optical digital outputs for connecting the unit to a receiver or amplifier with digital inputs.

SONOS CONNECT SOME WHAT

Written By LarryT, Greenbrier, AR on Sunday, June 16, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Enjoy my Sonos connect. My only concern was in downloading HD Tacks to my iTunes account. I wanted to listen to HD tracks from Sonos thru iTunes. I was able to load HD tracks to the Sonus but they would not play. Keep getting info from Sonos that said the HD Tracks was not supported. Contacted Sonos and was told that they don't support 24 bit music. That was disappointing to hear but I will get over it. I will connect my laptop using Audioquest Dragonfly 96/24 DAC to the input of my McIntosh amp and listen to my HD Tracks that way. Much better sound anyway
Pros:
good for what it was designed to do but does need to be updated so it can handle 24 bit music
Cons:
not able to play any music that has more than 16 bits

Setup was a piece of cake

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Settip up the CONNECT was a piece of cake. The unit is truly plug and play and it took me less than 10 minutes from opening the box to listening to music. The BRIDGE took a bit longer to setup but the controller picked up the CONNECT and was streaming my music in short order.
Pros:
Easy install and setup
Cons:

Turn that old receiver into something new

Written By X, Arlington, VA. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have to be wrong but I think the Atrium 7's are being discontinued and I don't know why. They are fantastic speakers. What amazed me is how wide of a sound field they set up. Polk has done an incredible job here. I get really nice bass and good mids. I thought they were a little bright out of the box but they seem to have settled in and sound great. The build quality is rock solid and I expect them to last for years. Polk has a nice job making these speakers super easy to mount. Without a doubt, of all the reviewers of the Atrium speakers, I am the stupidest. And you know what, I am ok with that. I felt like a Rhodes Scholar because I so handily mastered their install. Buy these while can can.
Pros:
Options, Options, Options.
Cons:
A little pricy but if you want to go to the big dance, you have to buy a ticket.

Works as it should - great product

Written By RichC, Long Island, NY on Saturday, May 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the CONNECT as an add-on to my existing system and to connect to a Cambridge Audio AR30 receiver as my primary source of music. It's very easy to connect and works once you add it to the Sonos network. The sound it great and the controller software is fine to use although sometimes picky as to where the music library is stored.
Pros:
Easy to connect to an existing network or to setup a new one; has a network hub.
Cons:
None really. I wish it came in black, though, to blend in better with my other components.

sonus connect

Written By Anonymous, arr on Thursday, May 16, 2013

Device does what it is supposed to do, however it is very suceptible to intereference from other wireless devices Unfortunately it works on an older more crowded 2.4 mhz band rather than the newer more stable and less crowded 5mhz band. The device should have more shielding and the ability to shift between the two frequencies. Device is prone to dropouts unless an extra bridge "amplifier-repeater" is added for additional $.
Pros:
Small footprint ; excellent tech support; well made
Cons:
Too prone to external interference

Wow! I have installed whole home automation and music systems for years, this one is by far the best music product. Very simple to install with or without built in speakers, the unit links automatically and merges with iTunes seamlessly. Tech support superior and very responsive. ( I called tech support because I knew I had missed something, it was all too easy)

Ease of use

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had Sonos in my house for almost two years. We have a connect unit as a source into our existing multiroom sound system. I love the freedom to change music from our iPad from anywhere in the house. The latest units I ordered were for a friend. After seeing our system they HAD to have one.
Pros:
Easy to set up and even easier to use.
Cons:
I am waiting for the Play 3 to have an aux in independent of the network that I can use it away from home with my iPod as a source.

Easy to set up. Just works as advertised.

Replaced my old sound system

Written By Mark B, Denver, CO on Wednesday, January 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a bit concerned when I decided to replace my old Bose Sound Dock with the Sonos system for two reasons: 1) I was concerned the Sonos might not sound as good and 2) my family is used to the Sound Docks and I was not sure the iPhone app would be as simple. Turns out my concrens were completely unfounded. The wireless sound is excellent and the iPhone and iPad apps are top notch. I particularly like being able to stream from both the i-device AND my iTunes library on hard drive. Top notch and a breeze to install.
Pros:
A breeze to setup and sounds great
Cons:
Your teenagers can change your music!

Works as expected
Pros:
Easy and quick set up in less than 5 minutes to existing Sonos system.
Cons:
Pricey, only $50 less than Play 5, and $50 more than Play 3,why? It's just Sonos guts without speakers. Granted here are more I/O choices.

Awesome Product

Written By KevinF, Holly Springs, NC on Friday, December 28, 2012

I got the Sonos CONNECT and BRIDGE from my fiance for Christmas. First, the Customer Service from Crutchfield was fantastic. My fiance gave glowing reviews to the folks she dealt with. They were able to explain to her exactly what she needed to purchase and why, which is no easy task given how little she knows about electronics. As for the product itself, setup was an absolute breeze. Being able to play music both from my iTunes library and various streaming services through my stereo is absolutely awesome. The apps for both Apple and Android are great and make controlling your playlist a breeze. Having a Sonos beats the heck out of having an iPod dock that you have to control manually. Would highly recommend for anyone whose music library is digitized. Only thing that didn't come in the box was an optical cable, so if you want a truly digital experience, probably best to order as well (also has an output for digital coax). Many thanks to Crutchfield for helping out.

Sonos Connect

Written By garyc, Torrance CA on Monday, December 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An absolutely top rate product. Based on experience I am usually skeptical about how much practical use new technology really provides. Well I can say that the Sonos product is phenomenal. I am so impressed because it is simple yet elegant in its implementation and brings all the music my family likes together in one place in a package that is simple to install and works perfectly. I have never been impressed more with a product. For it's intended use (music only) it is the standard by which others should be judged. This is a very impressive and well thought out product.
Pros:
Installs simply. Works flawlessly. With both analog and digital outputs, I can use the DAC from my Cary preamp for one listening area and then use the DAC in the Sonos Connect box to pump the same music into another room using the Zone 2 feature of my Cary preamp. I had one question for customer service which was answered very quickly.
Cons:
I can't think of anything negative to say about the product.

My son turned me onto the sonos system and its the easiest thing I've ever installed! Just plug in the bridge to your router and then plug in the connect box to your stereo amp and download the sonos software! If you don't have a stereo system then you would buy the play 3 or 5 speaker. Goodby CD's ! Mike
