Our take on the XM Direct2 Tuner

by Zak Billmeier

Add the endless entertainment of XM Satellite Radio to your aftermarket car stereo with the XM Direct2 tuner. First, you'll need to purchase a brand-specific cable that connects this adapter to your stereo. Once connected, you'll be able to change channels and see programming information on your stereo's display. XM includes a magnetic, roof-mount antenna for pulling in the satellite signal.

Note: Before installation, this unit must first be programmed by connecting it to a computer with a 32-bit operating system running either Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, and Internet Explorer.

Note: A subscription to XM is also required — learn about XM's programming. Satellite radio service is available only within Canada and the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories.

Highlights:

  • car-only XM radio interface — works with brand-specific adapters
  • includes roof-mount antenna
  • displays text on the stereo and supplies power to the satellite radio
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Features

Product Overview: The Audiovox CNP2000UCA XMDirect² Protocol Interface Adapter allows you to install XM Satellite Radio with select aftermarket car stereos. It includes the XM Vehicle Tuner, a magnetic base XM antenna, the Protocol Interface Adapter (PIA), and a USB programming cable. For most installations you will need a separate XMDirect² connection cable for your specific car stereo brand (see list below). In addition to the proper hardware, you will need to subscribe to XM Satellite Radio in order to receive programming.

XM Satellite Radio: XM Satellite Radio programming offers over 170 digital radio channels including commercial free music channels, plus news, sports, talk, comedy, and other entertainment programming from coast to coast. XM also offers traffic and weather alerts for several major US cities (24 cities as of 6/29/10), as well as live sports broadcasts from Major League Baseball, NHL, the PGA tour, Indy car racing, and several major college conferences.

XMDirect² Connection Cable: XMDirect² connection cables are available for XM-ready Alpine, Clarion, Eclipse, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Panasonic, and Sony car stereos. For specific head unit model compatibility, see the connection cable for your car stereo brand. The required cables for each brand are:

    • Alpine: 220CNPALP1
    • Clarion: 220CNPCLA1
    • Eclipse: 220CNPECL1
    • Jensen: 220CNPJEN1
    • JVC: 220CNPJVC1
    • Kenwood: 220CNPKEN1
    • Panasonic: 220CNPPAN1
    • Sony: 220CNPSON1

Installation Overview: The XM Vehicle Tuner plugs directly into the Protocol Interface Adapter (PIA). The XMDirect² connection cable for your aftermarket car stereo (sold separately) plugs between your XM-ready radio and the PIA via a 34-pin connection. You must also mount the magnetic antenna on the roof or trunk of your vehicle, and route the cable to the tuner (inside the vehicle). Before installation, you must download the proper radio model protocol to the PIA from the XMDirect² website (firmware will not be available for all satellite ready radios, but if this unit is listed as an accessory for your radio, it is compatible and the correct firmware is available on the audiovox.com/xmdirect/ website). This requires connecting your PC to the PIA via the supplied USB Programming cable and accessing the Internet.

Note: You must have Windows XP, Windows Vista (32 or 64 bit) or Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit) installed on your PC for programming the PIA.

Dimensions: The XMDirect² components have the following dimensions:

    • Tuner:
      • Width: 3.71"
      • Height: 0.70"
      • Depth: 2.05"
    • Magnetic Antenna:
      • Width: 1.41"
      • Length: 1.74"
      • Height: 0.53"

    Most frustrating piece of junk....ever.

Written By Williams, Allentown, PA on Sunday, January 13, 2013

I've delt with this junk long enough, and it's finally time to voice my complete displeasure with this absolutely worthless unit. I don't normally rate items, but this junk has brought me to this... those who wrote good reviews obviously haven't owned the unit long enough to have experianced the little surprises this unit has in store. The unit was easy to install, and worked wonderfully for about three months. Once the honeymoon was over, however, the unit would suddenly flash "No Signal" and die. over the past year, I'ver become very proficiant at removing my Alpine head unit and disconnecting the power lead to the XM receiver, reconnecting, reinstalling, and reprogramming all of my stations. I can perform this task in about 10 minutes. The fact that I've gotten so friggin good at this task goes to show what a complete piece of garbage this unit is. If Crutchfield cares about carrying quality items, this unit should be on the chop and discard list. One star is a stretch....if i could have put a "-" in front of the star, I would have. BUYER BEWARE.....LOOK AT OTHER OPTIONS, AND USE THIS AS LAST RESORT ONLY.
    Pros:
    ease of installation
    Cons:
you name it, this unit screams 'Cons'. Read entire review above. this thing sucks.

If find it hard to give this unreliable unit one star. It has quit working 3 times. I am hoping Crutchfield will have a NEW solution.

    Sometimes it works.
    Cons:
It fails. it fails. it fails.

    Frustrated SiriusXM subscriber

Written By G. Hall, Marion, IL on Friday, October 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What an unmitigated piece of electronic JUNK. Ordered the unit on 3/25/11. I repeatedly tried to program/update the receiver for my Kenwood head unit, but it would never work for more than a few seconds. I called Crutchfield and they sent me a sent a new tuner and installation kit claiming the USB cable was a known issue. After another frustrating few hours of attempting to get the unit to work, I removed the unit from my Dakota and left the piece of junk wrapped in a bag with the rest of the associated parts where it gathers dust to this day.
    Cons:
    Junk

    Unable to Use

Written By Okie A, OKC, Ok on Thursday, September 20, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The software is so far out of date I am suprised it didn't come on a floppy disc. I am unable to program the reciever. In this day and age of computers i was blown away by the antiquainted software you have to download. Even after spending 2 hours correcting the failed installation it still failed to update the reciever. This has nothing to do with Crutchfield but maybe they should stop selling this item until they get it fixed
    Pros:
    unknown
    Cons:
Its been a week and I still cant get it to work. I guess I'll send it back

    Piece of Crap

Written By Philip, Jackson, WY on Thursday, August 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked for 3 months then intermittently lost signal then died. Reprogrammed, removed, reinstalled. worked for 2 days then died. Cruthfield was great. Sent a new one along with cable to JVC unit just in case. Second unit died in same fashion in 3 months. Went to local stero shop who said they will not stock this product because it sucks and they have had to eat labor on replacing. They recommended using a blutooth XM anywhere unit. I see there a bunch more similar experiences since I bought the stero and XM tuner.
    Pros:
    none
    Cons:
pulling unit out is a pain every time it dies.

This product will fail and will need reprogramming

Written By Jeff, Dublin, Ohio on Monday, July 23, 2012

it is easy to install and it will probably work for a while, but it will eventually fail and it will need to be reprogrammed. Mine has failed 5 times over the course of a year and a half. Make certain to use IE to program it. It may even report that a program is already loaded, but you need to re-load it often, so install it somewhere that is readily accessible. Mine is connected to a JVC receiver... the JVC works fine.
    Pros:
works sometimes; when it works, it works perfectly.
    Cons:
it will fail and need to be reprogrammed at random intervals.

Item had to be returned. It was not truely compatable with the Sony Ready Radio. Would not allow CD's to be played from the multi-changer and other working features were not available after installation.

    Worthless

Written By Scarymar, Sarasota, FL on Monday, April 30, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'd be giving this thing a -10 if that was a choice. I am now on my 2nd unit - having had to pull and re-program the 1st one 5 times in less than 1 year. Loved the JVC KW-NY3HDT head unit but this receiver is the pits. Now I am less than 2 months into the replacement and it drops the signal yet again. Pull the dash- I think not. Pulled the fuse but you loose all the settings. For the record this is my 3rd aftermarket receiver - my son has had his almost 4 years now and NEVER had this crap to put up with. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! BTW - Programming will not work with VISTA operating systems, but works fine on Windows 7 - not very user friendly I will admit, but doable.
    Pros:
When it works I get XM radio!
    Cons:
It quits working ALL THE TIME.

I was hesitant to order this due to the reviews on the site, but gave it a try anyway. I went to the Audiovox website for detailed information on installing and was up and running in 30 minutes. So far everything works great.
    Cons:
Has to be programmed by consumer.

    Piece of Junk

Written By Ron, Lexington, KY on Monday, April 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a wonderful Kenwood XM receiver and speakers from Crutchfield. Unfortunately, the weak link in the system is this XM Tuner. The first one worked for ~1 month and quit for no apparent reason. The second one worked for 4 days, to say I am ticked is an understatement.
    Pros:
    It is flammable
    Cons:
Everything about this unit, poorly constructed, poor software set-up Windows XP really and finally how does a device lose it's programming?

    Mixed Feelings

Written By Tom, So Cal on Monday, March 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to go with my JVC radio which I also bought from Crutchfield. After reading all the reviews and instructions thoroughly, I followed all the steps to the "T" and made sure that I did the software upgrade using Microsoft XP. If you're not running XP, I guess you're out of luck...fortunately, I still have an old laptop with XP on it so it worked fine for me. The install was easy and the components are small enough to conceal during installation. The unit worked great for the first 30 days without any problems. Then suddenly one day it just stopped working. I returned the unit and bought a Pioneer XM receiver to go with a new Pioneer radio I also bought.
    Pros:
Small components are easy to hide
    Cons:
    1) Stopped functioning after on 30 days 2) Requires MS XP to perform software upgrade 3) Expensive when compared to others, + extra for special cables (double the price of a comparable Pioneer package)

    THE WORST

Written By MKHAMMDO, Coastal Georgua on Monday, February 06, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the worst piece of electronic equipment I have ever purchased! The instructions are not for the unit they actually sent, the wiring is completely different. The unit has to be "Programmed" prior to installation. I am very computer savy and I was not able to program it after several hours of trying. From other reviews apparently it has to be programmed using a laptop, running internet explorer and it has to be using Windows XP ONLY ! I am sorry but I don't live in 2002, and I don't have access to such a device. I am really shocked that Crutchfield would sell such a piece. DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE !!!!!!
    Pros:
    None
    Cons:
Useless instructions, Has to be "Programmed prior to installation. Impossible to program. WASTE of time and money,

    Buyer beware

Written By Lymelizzard, WNC on Tuesday, December 27, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is utter rubbish. Cheap flimsy plastic, have to download software. After the download you have to have access to winxp computer with internet explorer only.

After several call to Crutch field and rma's etc I phoned Kenwood had a 348-u head-unit and head unit rocks but..... The supplied software for the head unit from audiovox was corrupt.........Kenwood advised to use a different software than for my radio and it work for a month or so.
    Pros:
    XM, when it works
    Cons:
It's a poor poor performer. Audiovox and XM should be embarrassed to put this out for sale or be associated with it.

    Easy Install

Written By Chris B, Houston, TX on Tuesday, September 27, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a very easy install. Connecting the 2 wires to the navigation head unit was easy, just matched the colors, and the cable connection uses a unique connector. It took some time to run the antenna cable. I had to go around the sunroof and went out through the third brake light rubber mounts. Very easy to pass the thin antenna through this rubber mount (Nissan Frontier Pickup).

    Buyer beware - Awful instructions

Written By MidloRichard, Midlothian, TX on Sunday, September 04, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Took about 6 hours to install. I know what I am doing, but apparently the technical writers at Audiovox do not. They do not tell you that the only way to program this is to use Windows IE. In fact, they tell you very little about programming it, unless you go to the Internet. Also, the head unit-specific cable comes with a black and yellow wire and the instructions say NOTHING about them. I figured out what to do with them after googling the unit and reading the complaints. Yellow goes to switch power, black goes to ground/chassis. After that, the unit works fine. Hopefully it work longer than what others say their experience was. Good luck.

Hats off to Crutchfield Technical Service. They solved 2 problems very quickly over the phone ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND. These guys know what they are doing!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I know better than to buy something without reading the details about it, but this one I missed. The requirements necessary to download the binary file for the adapter are from the 1900's. I had to pay an extra $10 to have it loaded after talking to some computer stores, insuring they had what was required to download the .msi file. A Tech Support group at a local office supply store could not do it. Their reason was "it must be a defective unit." So, I called Crutchfield asking for help. They readily agreed to send a replacement. This time I went to a local computer parts store, who had all the necessary items to download the program...and well worth the $10 to have it done. It works just fine now, and there are no more issues with mating to the XM radio receiver I purchased. Now that I've bought this, I see it is being discontinued. Not my lucky day when I purchased it.
