Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDA-9847

by Matt Freeman

It's awfully tough to pick out the Alpine CDA-9847 CD receiver's best feature. Is it the dash-enhancing display? The vast number of format options it gives you? And what about the high power amp and extensive sound processing? Wait a minute...maybe it's the combination of all these things that makes this receiver worth crowing about.

Variety is the name of the game with the CDA-9847. Sure it'll play your standard CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs; if you've burned MP3s and WMAs on disc, you can bring them along, too. The Quick Search button lets you scroll through folders and files in a flash, so you find the song you want fast!

The potent internal amplifier (18 watts RMS x 4, CEA-2006 compliant) will rock your speaker system. Alpine's famous Bass Engine® lets you adjust the tone exactly to your liking, while sound-expanding BBE® processing adds focus and impact to all your music. For even more juice, you can send signal to external amplifiers using the three sets of preamp outputs.

This versatile receiver is also compatible with Alpine's KCA-420i iPod adapter. That's right — you can control your iPod right from your in-dash receiver. That's simply a mountain of music at your fingertips.

As if all that weren't enough, this powerhouse also features built-in satellite radio controls. Just add a compatible tuner and antenna, and subscribe to your preferred service (XM or SIRIUS), and you've opened up a world of coast-to-coast digital entertaiment, highlighted by over 120 channels of music, news, sports, and entertainment. You may never get out of the car again.

    Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or Sirius Satellite Radio receiver to the CDA-9847. To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional Terk XMD1000 Universal tuner (209XMD1000) and the Terk XM Direct Smart Digital Adapter for Alpine (209XMDALP1). To receive Sirius Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional Sirius tuner for Alpine (item # 607SIRALP1) directly to the head unit. A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi or Sirius Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via an auxiliary input adapter. A compatible antenna and a subscription are also required to receive satellite radio programming from Sirius or XM.

Switchable Button Color: The illumination of the 4 main buttons (Source/Power, Band, |<<, and >>|) can be switched to any of 4 colors: Blue, Green, Amber, and Red. When the illumination is set to Blue or Green, the color of the other buttons is Green. When the illumination is set to Amber or Red, the color of the other buttons is Amber.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination dimmer lead. When the unit's dimmer mode has been set to "Auto" and the illumination lead has been connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the "Manual" dimmer mode setting, so the button illumination is dim at all times.

Bass Engine: Bass Engine functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes. Bass Engine includes the following functions:

    • Bass Control:
      • Bass Center Frequency: Select from 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz
      • Bass Band Width: Select from 1 (narrow) to 4 (wide)
      • Bass Level: Select from -7 to +10
    • Treble Control:
      • Treble Center Frequency: Select from 7.5kHz, 10kHz, 12.5kHz or 15kHz
      • Treble Level: -7 to +7

BBE: BBE makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can select the level of the BBE effect (1, 2, or 3), or turn BBE off. Note: You can set different levels of BBE for each source. BBE is not available for AM radio.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3/WMA files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with constant and variable bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps and WMA files with constant and variable bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps are supported. Discs recorded using Joliet, Romeo, or other ISSO 9660 compliant formats can be played, but file and folder names will not be displayed correctly. Discs containing both standard CD audio and MP3/WMA data can be played; the unit may be set to play only the CD audio tracks or both types of tracks. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Disc and Station Titling: Titles of up to 8 characters in length may be entered for up to 24 radio stations and 18 CDs.

Text/File/Folder Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, or MP3 tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track, and select it by pressing the rotary encoder.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to front and rear preamp outputs, the CDA-9847 features a dedicated subwoofer preamp output. The subwoofer output has an independent volume control, and can be turned on or off.

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is connected and the built-in amplifier is not used, removing power from the built-in amplifier will improve the sound quality.

    CD Changer Controls

Ai-NET Compatible: An optional Ai-NET-compatible 6- or 12-disc CD changer (including MP3 Changers) may be connected to, and controlled by, the CDA-9847. With the KCA-410c Versatile Link Terminal (item # 500KCA410C), you can control multiple changers with this unit.

iPod-Ready: An iPod or iPod Mini can be controlled from this unit when connected via the KCA-420i Alpine Interface Adapter for iPod (item # 500KCA420i). While connected to the head unit, the iPod's battery is charged, and the artist/song title information is displayed on the face of the head unit. The unit's Quick Search feature allows you to search by playlist, album name, artist name, or song title. Random and repeat play functions are also available.

Optional Auxiliary Input: With the optional KCA-121B Ai-NET/RCA interface cable or KCA-410C Versatile Link Terminal, you can input audio from an auxiliary source unit, such as a TV, VCR or portable unit.

    Clock Display Note

Clock Operation: This unit allows you to choose "keyed" or "unit on" clock operation. When the clock has been given display priority and the unit is turned off, the clock will be displayed whenever the ignition key is in the "on" or "accessory" position. If the clock is not given display priority, the clock is not displayed when the unit is off.

    Best HU For The Money

Written By Alex, Florida on Thursday, October 06, 2011

This headunit came with my car, and I am very glad it did. It has been super reliable and great sounding the whole time I have had it. While it doesn't have eq functions my amps do, so please keep that in mind, when I talk about the sq. Overall I would recommend this to anyone and hey even after 5+ years they still fetch $100 dollars used on various sites, there's something to be said about Alpine quality.

    Alpine is the best!

Written By Steve, Reno, NV on Sunday, August 22, 2010

This is the best mp3 cd player I have ever owned. I bought one over 5 yrs ago when it
first came out, and it still works flawlessly. the design is beautiful and looks better than
the factory unit. it has the easiest controls of any deck out there with the quick file search
functions and easy sound processing menus. very simple to set and operate. I love the
amber illumination (and white lcd display) which matches my interior lights perfectly.
The sound quality is like nothing you will ever hear from a pioneer/kenwood/sony/
panasonic or other unit. I "upgraded" from an $800 pioneer premier deck and this alpine
blows it away. and you have the AINET adapter in case you want to add the alpine 6-disc
DVD changer in the future, and 3 sets of preouts. it has a true 20w rms measured power
rating per channel which is plenty to power my infinity reference speakers.

If the unit does not work properly or does not recognize aux input, you simply need to
press the red reset button with a pen behind the faceplate. as for playing burnt mp3 cds,
the unit is very picky about brands. the best brand for this unit is TDK. do not use
anything else! it is now 2010 and i still have not found a suitable upgrade unit to replace
this with. unfortunately even the new alpines do not have the classic good looks and
color changing ability that this older unit does. so i will continue to enjoy it as long as it
lasts. i am an alpine fan for life.

    Alpine CDA-9847

Written By Donald, Imboden, AR on Sunday, January 22, 2006

Purchased this to replace the aging stock unit in my 1995 4 Runner. All I can say is "WOW". What a difference it made, even with the stock 6 speakers. Power is great, looks really good in the dash also. I wanted a unit that didn't have to flip the face down to load a cd and this fit the bill perfect. This was my first purchase with Crutchfield and I am very impressed. You can't find better service any where else. The install instructions were excellent, free wiring adaptor and support if needed. I had a tracking number 3 hours after I made the order online. Very happy with my purchase.

    Very Good Value

Written By Joy, Boston, MA on Thursday, January 05, 2006
    Installed in a 1997 Saturn SL2
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the factory unit in my 1997 Saturn SL2, about four years after its CD player failed - and I have been extremely impressed with the sound quality and performance of the 9847. The clarity is such that I can even pinpoint the major range weaknesses in my existing stock speakers (next up to be replaced)! It gets excellent radio reception (pulling in community stations from the next state), and CD/MP3 playback is intuitive. I connected my iPod by attaching the Ai-Net/RCA adapter and drilling a hole in the rear of the pocket through which to secure the RCA inputs. One caveat: the Saturn kit with pocket is fairly shallow - the depth is about as wide as an iPod, with no extra room for cable storage. I have been content with the Bass Engine equalizer, but the biggest benefit I have found is the BBE - I'm not sure exactly what it does, but simply by setting it to +1 I can get a much richer sound from all genres of music. I can finally hear the depth and range in all my digital music, and I have yet found need to crank the volume past 12 (even for scratchy old blues recordings). I did install the unit with the help (and tools) of an audio engineer friend, so I can't comment on Crutchfield's customer service, but the instructions were fairly straightforward. The only trouble we ran into was initially getting the unit to display an "AUX" option under Sources, so it could recognise the attached iPod - I actually have no idea how exactly this was resolved, but after a few minutes of fiddling it worked. Also, the faceplate managed to get scratched the very first time I removed it, but this is a minor cosmetic concern. All in all, very satisfying performance!

    Clean design, Clean sound

Written By Christopher, Colorado Springs on Wednesday, January 04, 2006

After doing some quick research on the top rated on Crutchfield and other reviews of a good unit, I decided to get this without playing with it in store. Normally, I dont buy sight unseen, but the reviews were so solid and my previous experience with Alpine made me confidently order.

This was my first purchase with Crutchfield and I have to say I was VERY impressed with the documentation and removal instructions to remove the dash on my Elantra. All companies should learn from these guys on how to do it right! This also came with a bracket and wire harness so there was no modding needed, just a quick, simple 20 minute install. Yes, you might save a few bucks elsewhere, but the extras given made the whole install experience worth every penny...no more splicing OEM wires and trying to figure out what wire Hyundai defines as each speaker lead, etc.

The unit itself has a clean look with easy to navigate buttons. After years of dealing with push button vol up/down, it was great to get a dial control. This is infinitely easier to change quickly.

The colors are great, in my car the blue is very vibrant and pleasing to the eye. For a change, the red and green are nice as well.

Right now I have the head unit powering a pair of component MB Quart 6 1/2s. The sound is crystaline clear with little expected distortion until the loudest levels. I have an Orion amp that will be powering these as soon as I get around to it...in the meantime I would still be satisfied if I was just powering them off the unit.

Nice touches...the unit fades up to your previous volume level when you restart the car for a "soft on" effect.

    GET THIS ALPINE!

    Good features, good sound, but...

Written By Thomas, Chambersburg, PA on Saturday, December 31, 2005

I bought this as a replacement for the factory JBL system in my 2001 Toyota Solara so I could play mp3's and wma's via a direct connection from my flash player.

Pro: Installation was relatively pain free; the controls are very well laid out; manual well written (two inserts worth of corrections though??!!;)Mid to High range sound excellent; looks good installed.

Con: Very bright display: don't be fooled, the "dimmer" does nothing more than barely lower the control BUTTON brightness, leaving the display glowing like the center of the sun at night. For me, extremely annoying as I do a good bit of long distance driving on rural roads where it's DARK. Here's a fix: "Insta Cling Windshield Tint Strip," charcoal grey. Cut a piece long enough to cover the display, adding protection from scratches, and dimming the display just enough.

Secondly, the bass response seems to bottom out too soon. I'm sure this is a function of my speakers, and I'm going to install a small sub to see (hear!) if that helps.

Overall a 8.5 total score for a well engineered item at a great price. Happy New Year to all from south central Pennsylvania!

    Excellent and Affordable

Written By Snowcr4sh, Illinois on Tuesday, December 27, 2005

I bought this head unit about a month ago. Installation was fairly easy, and I had it hooked up in about an hour (After figuring out the install kit lol.) But wow, this head unit sounds amazing. It delivers plenty of power to all the speakers, the acoustics are crystal clear, and this unit made my sub MUCH more accurate. Highs are amazing and all bass and lows are very accurate and clear with perfect tone. I love the extra sound controls/colors and many options you can easily set, and the Ipod/Satellite radio-ready options are great features.

But here is the reason for the 4 stars.

I was extremely happy and it was perfect until about 1 & 1/2 weeks after I bought it. CD's would start to get stuck; it would just make a fast-paced clicking noise and not eject but after a few times of trying, it would finally work. And about a week after that it went crazy. No CD's would eject and any button I pushed would try to eject the CD.

I am a big Alpine fan, and an Alpine product failing surprised and dissapointed me, but it wasn't a big deal. I exchanged it without any hassel or problems. I plugged it in in a about 1 minute, and this one works perfectly.

I'd highly reccommend this head unit and any Alpine product to everyone. Even though my first unit failed, it was an easy hassel-free fix and the replacement works great.

    Alpine CDA-9847 - Nissan Frontier 2003

Written By Charles, Canton, GA on Wednesday, December 07, 2005
Installed in a 2003 Nissan Frontier
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit produces excellent quality sound. I've matched it up with Alpine Type-S 6.5, 5.25, dome tweeters, and bazooka BTA-6200 subwoofer. I'm currently running the speakers off of the head units built-in amp and I'm very impressed. Of course an amp is a most, but for now this unit rocks. The great thing about this head unit is it's versatility to be configured several different ways. Can't say enough about Crutchfield's service, they also get 5 stars.

Installed in a 2005 Ford Ranger
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally purchased this head unit from Crutchfield for my Ford Ranger. Installation was simple. Sound quality from both CD and Radio playback is terrific. I am impressed with Alpine's build quality and extra features that will allow me to add extras (three amps, ipod, ect) to this unit. Don't be fooled by the Apline CDA-9847's power rating of 18X4 RMS. This unit sounds great. I was so impressed with this unit that I recently sold my truck but removed the stereo and installed it in my current vehicle. When I purchased this stereo Crutchfield provided a addition wiring harness that made installtion and removal a snap. You can't buy a better head unit for the price.

Installed in a 1999 Toyota Camry LE
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Alpine CDA-9847 receiver for my wife's Camry. I assembled the wiring harness with solder and shrink wrap at the kitchen table in less than an hour. The rest of the installation took about 15 minutes.

This deck is quite impressive - blows away the factory stereo. Simply sounds great! CD playback is clean and crisp and radio reception is top notch. I had no idea that this receiver would make the factory speakers sound so good. MP3 playback was important too and the 9847 has excellent features including full disc shuffle. The large character display showing artist, song name, etc. is very convenient.

Since the Alpine 9847 sounded so good and the installation was so effortless, I bought a second one for my 4Runner. Again, a total breeze to install and it makes my factory speaker sound great too.

Man, let me tell ya, this thing really rocks, plenty of features. I replace my factory radio with this baby. And connect it to a Alpine F240 with front and sub. The sound is amazing. I never heard any unit sounds this good. You won't go wrong with this Alpine, although the price is a little bit higher compare with Kenwood, Sony, and Pioneer, but it's orth it. Thanks to Crutchfield, fast shipping, and sent me all the stuff i need for the installation. Usefull instruction book, although i still went for a pro installation. I am a Alpine fan now

    This Alpine ROCKS!

Written By Lane, Colorado Springs, Co on Tuesday, October 11, 2005

For $199.00 this Alpine runs circles around it's competition. My former Alpine(model cda-9805..also from Crutchfield) was great, but lacked the Mp3 and various other media technology. In two years time Alpine has manged to pack twice the features into this updated player. The Mp3 file capability is awsome! I can cram like 9 cd's into one and the ability to search by folder name, really makes life easy. The sound of this unit is EXCELLENT..Alpine has made some major breakthroughs with this unit. I did a simple change out from the previous deck and modified nothing, and I cant believe the difference in sound. Also the 5 color illumination is great as I can now match my Apline to my XM Roady...The only thing I wish it came with, was the remote. But you can buy it seperately..You can spend more on a different brand or model...but why! The Alpine CDA 9847 kicks some major butt! This Alpine rocks!

    Alpine quality

This deck is a great player. I took me a while to configur how I want my music to sound. This deck also makes my Kickers pound. This is a sweet deck and I love the third amp output just for a subwoofer. Great deck and this is my first alpine. Before I had a old Blaupunkt, and this deck sounds better then what my old one did. great buy worth the money and easy to use

    Excellent Receiver

Written By Luis, Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, October 02, 2005
Installed in a 1991 Ford Tempo
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am new to aftermarket receivers so I did my homework and researched all that would fit my car. After that it came down to the Alpine's and Kenwood's. I went for this receiver b/c of its features and its reputation. It took me awhile but I went with my first choice with the CDA 9847. Great CD quality and it vastly improved the sound of my stock speakers. Oh yea, it goes very loud, i don't need a huge system but with 200 total watts, thats enough for me. Installing the unit was a bit difficult, the hardest part was taking the stock receiver out. Overall, the looks, the illumination (especially with sun glare) is great. I love this receiver and will probably purchase another Alpine unit later on in the future. Picks up radios really good and is easy to control the features. I like the face b/c it doesn't have to fold down to insert a cd. I would definitely recommend this unit to anyboody looking for a good looking, great performance, and quality receiver. I loved Crutchfield's service, definitely helped me out.

I got this receiver to hear music in my Tempo and to have a CD player and this unit far exceeds all my expectations. It goes well with my dash and I love the option to change the illumination colors. I love playing data discs especially for long drives, like going back home for me which is like 4.5 hrs from my school. Again, definitely recommend this unit, and from crutchfield b/c of supplying me with everything that I need. Thanks, I'm very happy with my purchase.

    Another exellent product from Alpine!

Written By Andrew, Lusby, MD. on Wednesday, September 28, 2005
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once again Alpine has created another Head Unit that performs well beyond my expectations. Throughout the years I have read reviews on Alpine Head Units and watched my friends install them in their cars. After listening first hand for myself I knew I had to get one. I recently bought a 2006 Tiburon and immedaitely took out the factory unit and installed this one in its place. One second after installing it I completely noticed a change in the music produced through the factory speakers. Not only were they noticeably louder and clearer, but the bass response seemed almost twice as loud as well. Now most people will say that any aftermarket Head Unit will produce the same results but they are sorely mistaken because I have heared many Head Units with stock systems behind them and they don't sound even half as good. So if your looking For an excellent Head Unit at a great price that will rival all others, this is the one you wan't. I highly recommend it to anyone who is at all serious about the quality of music that they listen to!

    Terrific Deck

Written By Bruce, Mount Vernon, Wa. on Sunday, September 25, 2005
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgraded an old JVC deck with this unit and the power, quality and sonic precision of this deck blew me away. Easy install, excellent instructions and support. Tons of power so I can blast this unit with the windows down as I cruise down the highway. Easy to use controls, brite display. This unit is well worth the price and in fact performs better then some units costing much more. Can't say enough good things about this deck.

Great CD Player!! All You Will Ever Need

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2005 Dodge Ram Quad Cab. The entire install took me 20 mins. The wire harness fit like a glove and made the installation super easy. I didn't even have to read the installtion instructions.. it was that easy. Just looking at it - you could figure it out. The CD player is great. Great sound, easy to use, and looks great. Apline fan for over 20 years. I just wish one thing...
when you eject or inserted a CD - wish the unit would not stop the broadcast of the radio station you were listening too.

    Alpine CDA-9847

Written By Gennaro, Texas on Thursday, September 22, 2005

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking for a good performing mp3 cd player this is a good choice. (I'm no audiophile so I can't comment on sound quality or performance)

Install was easy (their customer support is amazing btw- my last stereo was ripped out which made install a little tough, but Crutchfield walked me through nicely).

The most important element for an mp3 player are the menues for me- and Alpine has the best in its class. all the other brands are a pain to navigate with IMO.

Tags show up nicely, but just put each album in a different folder to make it easier. I recommend naming the actual file the title of the song instead of "ARTIST NAME - TITLE" it makes it easier to find what you are looking for.

Display is clean and pretty (I hate all that useless display on sony and kenwood) Preset buttons are a little small for me, it took a little while to get used to- but they aren't bad.

I picked this model because you can do the ipod connection thing... but I was planning on just using an aux line in (cheaper than the alpine ipod interface thing) BUT there is no aux in on this one- you have to go a model lower (unless you buy the Alpine ipod interface or a $15 adapter).

I will most likely stick with alpine for all my future purchases, it may be slightly more expensive but its well worth it imo.
