Infinity

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Infinity Kappa 692.9i

by Kristen Schaub

Infinity built the latest Kappa speakers with improved technology and high-end materials to provide you with outstanding sound reproduction. The Kappa 692.9i 6"x9" speakers feature light, but stiff woven glass-fiber woofer cones that won't flex or distort. The Plus One design offers a larger surface area for improved low-frequency output and efficiency, while longer voice coils produce tighter, snappier bass. Large magnets keep the woofers running cooler by placing more steel close to the voice coils to act as a heat sink.

Infinity uses the same Metal Matrix Diaphragm tweeter found in many of their popular home speakers, so you'll hear the music the way it was recorded with minimal coloration or distortion. The dome tweeters pivot, allowing you to adjust them for better stereo imaging.

The computer-optimized outboard crossover networks employ audiophile-grade components to separate highs and lows, so that the woofer and tweeter work together perfectly. Pre-wired crossovers eliminate a time-consuming step in your installation, and terminals at the end of the crossover wires screw directly to the speakers, leaving no chance for incorrect wiring.

Important Note: You should use an outboard amplifier to power these speakers.

Installation Note: These Infinity speakers do not include screws or speed clips. You may be able to use the factory screws to install them, but it's always a good idea to have an assortment of self-tapping screws (5/8" to 1") and speed-clips on hand.

Highlights:

  • 2-way 6"x9" speakers (pair)
  • True Four Ohm Impedance technology: speaker's 2-ohm impedance combines with speaker wire impedance for a 4-ohm load
  • Plus One® woven-glass-fiber woofer cone with hi-roll rubber surround
  • 1" rotating UniPivot, edge-driven M.M.D.® dome tweeter
  • computer-optimized outboard crossover with tweeter level control
  • direct-connect crossover dongle
  • power range: 2-110 watts RMS (330 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 35-25,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 96 dB

    Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speakers use cones more surface area than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woven Glass Fiber Woofer Cones: This woven-glass-fiber material is very light and extremely stiff, minimizing cone flex. This results in very low distortion and improved clarity.

Edge Driven MMD Dome Tweeters: Each speaker has an Edge-driven MMD (Metal Matrix Diaphragm) dome tweeter. The benefit is increased power handling and reduced distortion at high output. This technology also allows for better integration with the mid/woofer. The tweeter has an adjustable output level, +0 dB (flat) and -3 dB.

UniPivot Tweeter: The tweeter is angled and can be rotated about 270° after installation. This allows you to direct the tweeters toward the listeners, very useful for speakers mounted low in a door.

High-Output Design: The high output 2-ohm voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring and extracts every watt from factory receivers, increasing overall system output and efficiency (relative to 4 ohm speakers). The speaker's 2.0-ohm impedance combined with the impedance of your speaker wire provides a true 4-ohm load to your connected headunit or amplifier. The speakers also benefit from increased power when you upgrade the wire and add aftermarket amplifiers, designed to power a 2-ohm load.

Crossovers: Kappa speakers include computer-optimized, voice-matched crossovers, using audiophile quality air core inductors and polypropylene capacitors. The crossover slope is 12 dB/octave.

Crossover Connections: Each crossover is connected to the speaker by a 6" wire. The input terminals are set screws that will accept up to 10 gauge bare wire.

    Crossover Dimensions:

    • Length: 3-1/16"
    • Width: 1-1/4"
    • Height: 1-3/16"

    Infinity Kappa 692.9i

Written By greg43@msn.com, maryland on Monday, September 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good sound. Connection dongle..pain. Crutchfield says these fit front and back door on dodge ram 2500. They say the 60.9's fit the back doors but not the front. I had no problem installing the 60.9's in the front door and fitment with the door panel issues with these in the back doors...go figure?
    Pros:
sound is greatly improved over factory speakers with Alpine (not so) premium sound system. Can't wait to get a processor and amp to bring these alive.
    Cons:
speaker connection dongles are a pain to place in doors

Mounted these in Sound Ordinance bass bunkers to use for outdoor speaker for my motorhome.powered by Alpine MRP-F300 Amp. Great sound. Excellent highs and great bass even at low volumes. Can't crank it up too loud in a campground. Sure beats any portable devices I used in the past.

    Pros:
    Easy install

    Good Speakers

    Installed in a 2003 Infiniti G35
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had trouble with the first pair of the Infinity speakers I purchased. One of the speakers had a bad voice coil. It was a very long process to install the speakers in my Infiniti g35, so I did not look forward to having to remove everything again. The representatives at Crutchfield were very easy to work with and immediately shipped me a replacement set of speakers. Having recently re-installing the speakers, I can say that they deliver deep bass and crisp highs. They are a great improvement over the factory speakers, although I also replaced the factory Bose amp with an aftermarket one along with a JL Audio Cleansweep signal processor.
    Pros:
    Good bass, clean highs.
    Cons:
Large crossover connection device difficult to locate when re-fitting panel on rear deck.

    These speakers CRAVE POWER!!!

Written By Dan C., San Francisco, CA on Sunday, January 29, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like some of the previous reviews. These speakers need the extra power, deck power just isn't enough to power these great speakers. When I first installed these speakers I used deck power and the sound just wasn't there. When I tried to turn it up they started to have a cracking sound. So I found out they they were underpowered. So I hooked them up to an amp and gave them each 100 watts and I couldn't be happier. These speakers are great. You can't go wrong.
    Pros:
Sound GREAT when hooked up with an amp. Really crisp highs and lows
    Cons:
Need an amp to really benefit from these speakers

    Awsome Clarity - Great Choice

Written By B. L. Ritchie, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on Sunday, May 08, 2011

These are a great upgrade choice. They really hit the highs with a clear smooth response in the mid range. The bass is tight but it would be even nicer if they could hit some of the lows without using an external amp. The built in power of a deck is OK however these speakers love and need power.

Give these the power they deserve and you will really enjoy them for a long long time.

I have these speakers paired with the Alpine ktp-445 and a world of difference, some people don't take into account that these speakers need to be broken in, it needs some time, when i bought these i was disappointed but let my music play for an hour or two at mid volume, at an ok volume, and wow, i was blown away, and now that i have the Alpine Ktp-445 they sound amazing, i rate these speakers a 5.

    Ups and Downs

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At this price, I figured these were going to be God's Gift of Speakers, but they sounded terrible in free air (rear deck of a 240sx coupe, Kenwood 600w 2 channel amp powering them, Kenwood receiver, listening to different kinds of rock). They couldn't seem to hit any low frequencies at all, or if they did, it was muddy and distorted. I picked up a set of boxes, installed them, and the speakers came to life.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my stock speakers in a 2006 Chevy Cobalt with these and have been truly impressed. The sound quality, even just going through the headunit is really incredible. I've been impressed with the bass response, and the treble response function is great. I'm sure these would sound even better with an amp, but to be frank, I'm having trouble justifying the cost with the sounds that these speakers already produce. Great buy, would highly recommend.

Great speakers - get an amp

Written By Carlson, USA on Saturday, May 15, 2010

I ran these off head unit power while waiting to install my amp for a couple days, and yes they're nothing special then. They sounded better than the OEM speakers but you won't get much bass from them without real power. You need a lot of power for high quality speakers. I have 300watts/rms on the pair. Just all in all these speakers are great, play very loud with very little distortion. Good punch and actually do a respectable job with low frequencies.

    I Love Crutchfield

Installed in a 2004 Dodge Neon
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound amazing. i bought a pair in november along with sum infinity reference 6022i for my doors. the highs and mids should be rated way above average. they sound crisp and clear. and they do lack bass. but im running 2 BA G5's so thats not a problem for me. the main reason i got these 6x9's was so i could hear my music over my bass. and if thats what your looking for then infinities are perfect for you. i'm not even running and amp to them yet. just off the headunit and they are still loud enough to hurt your ears. I love these infinities so much i'm still giving it 5 stars even though one just blew out on me. not a total blowout but enough to where it didnt sound good. i think it was just a faulty speaker because all the other ones are fine and it was on lower volume. so i called up crutchfield. was only on the phone for 3 minutes. and i now have a brand new pair being shipped to my door. Thank You Crutchfield!

I actually convinced myself after reading Most (one guys did warn me) of the reviews and the fact that these were crutchfield signature products that these would be an upgrade over my previous Sony xploud with a max of only 220 watts, needless to say I regret putting them in, these speakers really do not push bass well, it made me think that someone had switched out factory speakers on me. I think I'm going back to my sonys-

Be warned that these speakers will make you spend more on gas. You will have to drive around town in circles whenever you want to listen to music 'cause these will make everything else seem like a waste of time. Get ready to hear (and feel) your favorite music for the first time.

I bought these speakers for my 92 dodge pickup and like the title says wow. That was my reaction when i first herd how good these speakers sounded in my old truck even with the original factory radio. The highs are amazing alot better than the old kenwood they replaced and the bass sounds good but could be better it starts to distort at about middle to upper volume but i think its the old radio i would recomend these for anybody who love listening to their music and want to hear it

    They Fit!

Written By darrellrw2, Central Valley, Ca on Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Crutchfild says they would not fit my '07 Camry SE. The installers begged to differ. .. and they fit like a glove. The JBL factory paper speakers I thought put out a decent sound. Listening to Johnny Cash singing Ring of Fire is a totally new experience. Tony Tone Tone's song The Blues, I heard guitar riff's I didn't even know were there after years of playing the song. 38 Special's Hold on loosely.. well I could go on but I think you get the drift. Crutchfield was worried about the magnet size not fitting in the door. The install tech was confident and he was right. In fairness Crutchfield did say the infinity ref9623i would not fit and they were partly right as they fit perfectly on the rear deck of my Camry. So all you Carmy buyers beware, you dont need the 600 dollar per unit speakers to upgrade you Camry sound.

These DO NOT fit 2003 Dodge Ram Quad Cab front doors! Even though they say they will fit, I would really re-think and get close measurements and call Crutchfield before ordering these for any 3rd generation Dodge pick up. Yes, they are 6x9's but the basket is to big to fit in the holes in the door! I really am disappointed that they did not work because I really wanted these speakers due to there great specs.

    Really solid speaker

Written By Carlson, Nissan Altima, MN on Saturday, September 12, 2009

Really enjoy these speakers. I have them powered with 150wRMS and they handle it very well. I have them crossed at 50hz. Very impressed with the low range reproduction. Mids and highs are very powerful and clean, the tweeter is outstanding in my opinion for a 2 way set. It is nice to have the ability tone the tweeter down a bit. I did that and have them paired with kappa components for my front soundstage and that helps keep my imaging up front, with an awesome rear fill of bass, mids, and delicate highs. I temporarily ran these off stock headunit power and was surprised that they sounded pretty decent, just not very loud. Much better when supplied with strong component amplification. These speakers play very clean, very loud, and put out enough to bass to fill in the lows without a sub.

    Can't Go Wrong with Infinity

Written By Randy, Oakwood Hills, IL on Friday, June 12, 2009

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the Infinity Kappa 6x9 and 4" speakers to replace my 2 rear deck factory speakers on my Grand Prix. The difference in sound quality is night and day, but I was a little surprised that my factory speakers were louder than the Infinity speakers at the same volume. The Infinity speakers can handle way more volume though without distortion so it's still well worth it. I'm looking into replacing my front 5 ¼" and tweeters speakers with Infinity Kappa speakers to complete the set.
