Rugged Design: The Canon PowerShot D20 digital camera's
rugged design allows
you to take it almost anywhere. It is waterproof to 33
feet (IPX8 standard), temperature resistant from 14°F to 104°F, shockproof up to
5 feet, and
dustproof (IP6X standard).
PureColor System LCD Monitor: The Canon PowerShot
D20 has a 3" TFT color LCD monitor featuring approximately 460,000
dots with approximately 100% picture coverage. This extra-durable, high-resolution
screen with tough scratch-resistant coating on the anti-reflective, PureColor
LCD screen offers a crisp, bright, clear picture to make shooting
playback and using the camera's menu functions convenient even at an angle. The
LCD display's brightness can be manually adjusted.
Note: This camera does not feature
a separate viewfinder.
12.1 MP Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses
a 1/2.3" CMOS image sensor with approximately 12.7-million total pixels and
12.1-million effective pixels giving your shots added depth and detail.
DIGIC 4 Image Processor: The PowerShot D20 features the
DIGIC 4 Image Processor. The DIGIC 4 chip gives you superior image quality, faster
image writing to the SD card, more efficiency to extend battery life, and higher
definition for the LCD monitor.
Intelligent Contrast Correction: DIGIC 4 also makes possible
the i-Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which controls the
compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright
areas unchanged for better images where the main subject is dark, and more natural
transition. The PowerShot D20 can even use i-Contrast in playback
mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated.
Global Positioning System (GPS): The camera has a built-in
GPS receiver. Camera location information (latitude, longitude, and elevation)
can be added to your images and movies as your shoot. This information can be
used with the supplied software to see the shooting location on a map.
Optics: The camera features a Canon F3.9-F4.8 lens with 5x
optical zoom and a
4.0x digital zoom (20x total zoom). The 5-25mm focal length (35mm equivalent:
28-140mm) can be increased by approximately 1.5x or 2.0x by engaging the digital
tele-converter. The equivalent focal lengths when using the 1.5x and 2.0x
teleconverter are 42-210mm and 56-280mm, respectively.
Intelligent Image Stabilization: The PowerShot D20 is
equipped with the latest advance in Canon's acclaimed Optical Image Stabilizer
Technology. Intelligent IS analyzes camera movement and applies the best shake
correction method for the shooting situation. For still images, the system
automatically selects Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid), and Tripod IS modes. If
you're shooting video, the camera chooses from Dynamic, Powered, Macro, or
Tripod IS modes.
Recording Media: The camera records still images and moving
images with stereo audio on SD, SDHC, and SDXC Memory Cards. The camera has no
internal memory, and does not include an SD card, so you will have to obtain a
memory card before recording.
Still Image Resolution: Still images are recorded in JPEG
format in four aspect ratios. You can choose from the
following still image resolutions:

Movies: Movies are recorded in MOV format (Image data: H.264, Audio data:
2-channel monaural LPCM). You can record in Full HD (1920 x 1080, 24 fps), HD
(1280 x 720, 30 fps), or SD (640 x 480, 30 fps). Other movie modes include
iFrame movie (recommended for Macs), Super Slow Motion (320 x 240 at 240 fps or
640 x 480 at 120 fps), or Miniature Effect.
Drive Modes: The Canon PowerShot D20 offers the following
modes:
- Single Shot: The digital
camera captures a single image each time the
shutter button is fully pressed and released.
- Continuous Shooting Mode: You can
shoot successive frames, at approximately 1.9 frames per second, while the
shutter button is fully depressed. The interval depends upon shooting
conditions and settings.
- Self Timer: You can choose a 10-second self timer for
self portraits or to include yourself in a group photo. A 2-second self
timer can be used to avoid camera shake. The custom self timer lets you set
the delay time between 0 to 30 seconds, and the number of photos taken
between 1 and 10 shots.
- Face Self-Timer: For group shots that include the
photographer, the camera will take up to three consecutive shots
approximately two seconds after it detects
an additional face has entered the
picture.
- Wink Self-Timer: The camera will take a picture about
two seconds after a wink is detected. This allows the subject in the picture
to control when the photo is taken.
Blink Detection: The camera will alert you if it detects that
someone in the photo may have closed their eyes when the picture was recorded.
For multiple shots, the blink detection function works for the final shot only.
Focus Modes: The camera offers manual and auto focusing. You
can choose from the following modes:
- Manual: When Auto Focus is not possible, you can
switch to manual focus, and use the left/right buttons to adjust the focal
position.
- Face AiAF: The camera automatically
detects the position of a face (up to 9) and uses the data
to set the focus and exposure while shooting.
- Center: The camera fixes the AF frame
at the center; this is recommended when the target subject
is at the center of the composition.
- Tracking AF: The focus is maintained on a moving subject while you
press the shutter-button halfway.
Focusing Range: The camera features the following focus ranges:
- Auto (incl. Manual): 0.4" to infinity (W); 3.3' to
infinity (T)
- Macro: 0.4" to 1.6' (W)
- Infinity: 2" to infinity (W); 3.3' to infinity (T)
Auto Focus Lock: The focus can be locked. After locking the
focus, the focal distance will not change even when you release your finger from
the shutter button.
AF Assist Beam: The
built-in AF Assist lamp will automatically light to assist focusing in low-light
conditions when your press the shutter button halfway.
Shooting Modes: You can choose between several shooting
modes. In the Smart Auto mode, the camera will automatically select the best
settings for the scene, detect and focus on faces, and set the color and
brightness to optimal levels. Other shooting modes to choose from include:
Program, Movie Digest, Portrait, Smart Shutter, Handheld Night Scene, Low Light,
Fish-Eye Effect, Miniature Effect, Toy Camera Effect, Monochrome, Super Vivid,
Poster Effect, Color Accent, Color Swap, Underwater, Underwater Macro, Snow,
Fireworks, Long Shutter, Stitch Assist, iFrame movie, and Super Slow Motion
Movie.
Exposure Compensation: If you are shooting against a bright
background or strong backlight, you may need to correct the exposure so that the
subject doesn't come out too dark. You can set the adjustments from -2 to +2
in 1/3-step increments.
Locking the Exposure Setting (AE Lock): You can set the exposure
and focus separately. This is effective when the contrast is too strong between the
subject and background, or when a subject is backlit.
Long Exposures: You can set the shutter speed to a range between
1 and 15 seconds to shoot long exposures. However, you should attach the camera to a
tripod to prevent the camera from moving and blurring the image.
Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering
modes:
- Evaluative Light Metering: Used for
standard conditions. The area within the frame is divided
into several zones and light is measured based on subject
position, brightness, direct light and backlighting..
- Center-Weighted Averaging: Averages
the exposure from the entire image, but places more weight
on the subject at the center.
- Spot: Meters the area within the spot
AE point at the center of the LCD monitor.
White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance
settings:
- Auto: The camera sets the white balance
automatically according to shooting conditions.
- Daylight: For recording outdoors on a
bright day.
- Cloudy: For recording under overcast,
shady or twilight skies.
- Tungsten: For recording under tungsten
and bulb-type 3-wavelength fluorescent lighting.

warm-white, cool-white or warm-white (3-wavelength)
fluorescent lighting.
- Fluorescent H: For recording under
daylight fluorescent, or daylight fluorescent-type
(3-wavelength) fluorescent lighting.
- Underwater: Sets the optimum white balance for taking pictures
underwater; reduces blue tones to produce natural, vibrant hues.
- Custom: Allows you to manually set the
white balance and store the settings.
Built-In Flash: The camera features a built-in flash
with a range of approximately 12" to 11' at the maximum wide angle and 3.3' to
9.8' at the maximum telephoto zoom. You can choose from the following flash modes.
- Auto: The flash fires automatically
as required by the light level
- Flash On: The flash fires with every
shot
- Flash Off: The flash will not fire
- Red-Eye Correction: You can automatically
correct red-eyes in images taken with the flash.
- Slow Synchro: You can make the main
subject, such as people, appear bright by having the camera
provide the appropriate illumination with the flash. At the
same time, you can use a slow shutter speed to brighten the
background that the light from the flash cannot reach.
Flash Lock: You can lock the camera's flash exposure so
that the exposure settings are correctly set regardless of the composition of
your subject.
ISO Speed: The ISO speed can be set to 100, 200, 400,
800, 1600, 3200, or Auto to reduce the effects of camera shake or avoid blurry subject
or to turn the flash off when shooting in a dark area.
My Colors: You can choose the look and feel of the photos you
take by using My Colors to add the following effects to the image you are currently
recording or have already recorded:
-
Vivid: Emphasizes the contrast and color
saturation to record in bold colors.

darker.
- Vivid Blue: Emphasizes blue tints to
make blue subjects, such as the sky or ocean, more vivid.
- Vivid Green: Emphasizes green tints
to make green subjects, such as the mountains, new growth,
flowers and lawns, more vivid.
- Vivid Red: Emphasizes red tints to make
red subjects, such as flowers or cars, more vivid.
- Custom Color: Lets you adjust the
contrast, sharpness, or saturation settings or the color
balance between red, green, blue, and skin tones.
- My Colors Off: Records with no effect.
Histogram Display: The Histogram is a graph that allows you
to check the brightness of the image. The greater the bias toward the left in the
graph, the darker the image. The greater the bias toward the right, the brighter
the image.
