Our take on the Infinity Reference 6010cs

It's easier than ever to add the great sound of the Infinity Reference 6010cs 6-1/2" component speaker system to your vehicle. Infinity's Starfish™ mounting bracket allows the system's tweeters to be installed in most factory tweeter locations. If you don't have factory tweeters, the ingenious I-mount system helps you custom install the tweeters in almost any location.

No matter where you mount them, you'll appreciate the crisp response of silk dome tweeters. They supply plenty of detail without fatiguing the ears — a nice feature when you've got a long road trip in mind.

And you'll enjoy the rest of your music as well. The Plus One+® woofer cones are designed with more surface area than other 6-1/2" woofers, for deeper, cleaner bass response. The outboard crossover networks direct the highs and lows to the proper drivers with real precision, so your music always sounds natural and full.

No doubt about it, the intelligent design of Infinity Reference component systems will make a difference you can hear in your music.

Woofers
Tweeters
Crossovers

Woofers

Plus One+ Woofer Cones: Each speaker uses a cone significantly larger than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One+ design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woofer Materials: Each woofer is constructed from Injection-Molded Polypropylene. This process of cone molding assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also lighter weight and more rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Hi-roll Rubber Surrounds: The hi-roll rubber surrounds allow the woofers a greater range of movement, resulting in longer X-max and more bass output.

Intermount III: Infinity's Intermount III mounting system allows the 6010cs woofers to fit in 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" applications. A metal adapter ring is included with each woofer.

Tweeters

Tweeter Material: Each tweeter features a 1" edge-driven silk dome for smooth, accurate highs.

Tweeter Mounting: The I-Mount tweeter mounting system and Starfish mounting brackets give you several different ways to mount the tweeters:

  • I-Mount Tweeter Mounting System: The tweeters can be surface- or flush-mounted with Infinity's innovative I-Mount system:
    • Surface Mount: Surface mounting the tweeters involves screwing the surface-mount cup to the mounting location, then inserting and locking the tweeter into the cup.
    • Flush Mount: Flush mounting is made easy through the use of the threaded flush-mount adapter and plastic locking nut. Once a cutout is made, the flush-mount adapter (with the tweeter installed) is inserted into the hole. The large plastic locking nut is threaded onto the adapter (from behind the mounting surface) to hold the complete assembly securely in place. When flush mounted, the tweeters may be angled for optimum response and imaging.
  • Starfish Mounting Brackets: The Starfish mounting brackets allow the tweeters to be installed in factory locations behind the grilles:
    • Surface Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is screwed to the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
    • Flush Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
    • Bottom Mount (to grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is secured to the underside of the grille panel. The tweeter must be inserted into the bracket and locked into place before the bracket is mounted.
    • Flush Mount (in-dash location): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the dash. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.

Crossovers

2-Way Crossovers: These speakers include computer-optimized, voice-matched crossovers. Each crossover features an 18dB/octave, 3.5kHz high-pass network for the tweeter and an 18dB/octave, 3.5kHz low-pass network for the woofer.

Selectable Tweeter Output Level: Each crossover allows you to select the tweeter output level according to system requirements and personal preference. The tweeter level may be set to "-3 dB" or "0 dB."

Crossover Connections: The crossover inputs and outputs are gold-plated screw terminals.

Mounting: There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover.

Crossover Dimensions: W=3.174", H=1.393", D=4.315"

Infinity Reference 6010cs

Written By david, skokie,il on Monday, October 22, 2007

This system sounded so great in my truck, that I bought another set to install in my car. The system comes complete with multiple mounting systems, which for my non-factory installation was great. The sound is very clear and non tinney from what i had before with low quality speakers.

Harsh tweeters

Written By Stephen, PA on Thursday, August 23, 2007

Installed these in my 94 Corvette convertible recently. While I was setting them up, sitting in the garage, they sounded pretty good, although the tweeters were bright enough that I moved them to -3 dB immediately.

Once I got them out on the highway, though, with the volume turned up to the level needed to hear music in this very loud car, the tweeters are unbearably harsh. I have to turn the treble all the way down at that volume to keep from splitting my head open. And then, of course, the whole system sounds terrible.

They might be acceptable if you are only going to listen to them at a fairly low volume level.

good with this set up

Written By John C, Charleston SC on Wednesday, August 22, 2007

I'm glad I didn't get anything more expensive. You need a sub with 6x9s or these 6" door speakers. I have the tweaters down the 3 db in the cross over. They are also mounted up high and add an nice sound. These do well with the 6x9s and the sub. (read below)

I'm not sure I would want to have these by themselves.

Does a great job with the other speakers.

Infinity 6x9 3 way Refernce in the back.
Infinity 6 component in the front
R Fosgate 50 x 4 pushing the speakers
1 10" Alpine type E sub
Mono Visionik V108xt sub amp.

Kenwood 591

This set up was lacking both low and midrange before he one sub and amp. Now it is just right, and adds a lot of depth to the other speakers as well as nice tight thump.

I was worried about too much bass, as I wanted it to sound like a live concert and not a window ac or bull dozer.

I closed the port on a type 2 Q logic.

This in a 2006 passenger van.

Disappointed

Written By Chris, Mt. Laurel, NJ on Monday, July 30, 2007

Luckily, these were on sale at the time. I had these hooked up to a profile amp running 80w per channel. In all fairness, I've found that these woofers produce strong, clear, low end bass. Although other reviews have really torn them apart on the bass end, I have found them to be on par with speakers much more expensive in terms of low end reproduction. However, thats where the positives end. There is no mid range. None. Zero. Its not a matter of distortion or power, there simply is no mid bass what so ever. Then there are the tweaters. These are terrible, to say the least. They are painfully tinny and noisy, like listening to a hand radio at full blast next to your ear. Even after adjusting the cross over to -3db, they were still barely tolerable and sounded awful. All in all, definately worth spending the extra $20 for speakers that blow these away.

Spend more for something better.

Written By edrl, montgomery, IL on Tuesday, July 17, 2007

I just about always get Alpine type-R when I go with components but I decided to take a chance on the cheaper Infinity's. I figured that components, while all not being equal, are all of good quality. I amp my interior speakers and have a sub so I'm not too interested in pounding bass from my components. I just want midbass and good sounding tweeters. These have neither.

Even with my doors b-quieted and with the components amped with a Alpine 35w rms CEA compliant amp, these put out absolutely no bass whatsoever. Not even any midbass. Plus they distort when any bass is given to them. If you are looking to improve sound quality over stock speakers, these are the wrong decision.

Now to the tweeters, they produce the worst, tinny ear pierceing sound I've ever heard. It dosent sound anywhere near natural sound. You would have to switch the x-over to -3db and turn the treble way down to even stand these tweeters.

You will regret not spending more for type-R's or any other better component.

I went and got the type-R components like I should have done and they sound amazing. Most people wouldnt even need a subwoofer with them. Plus the tweeters are excellent.

Infinity Reference 6010cs

Written By Bruce, Baltimore, MD on Wednesday, April 18, 2007

In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a detail junkie. I was hoping that these speakers would be able to provide some solid detail and overall just some good basic sonic reproduction. I'm not a basshead, so I was not terribly concerned about the other reviewers comments about lack of bass. However, most other reviewers have not done justice to this issue. It's not just a lack of decent bass. It's a lack of overall sonic balance and clarity plus a nearly complete absence of mid bass and bass.

If you are expecting speakers that provide the full range of sound, you will likely be disappointed. They sound shrill and sibilant on their own. The good news is that the overall sound improves with other speakers that provide more mid bass and bass. I'm very glad I also purchased the Infinity 6012si as well. With the 6012s in the back deck, the sound improves and becomes more balanced. The bad news is that it's still not very good.

Unfortunately, the 6010 are just not terribly good speakers. They are extremely bright. But, more than just being bright, they are sibilant. Instead of hearing usual cymbal crashes, one tends to hear unpleasant, sharp, blurring sounds.

Yes, these are an improvement over stock speakers. I'd expect an improvement over stock from speakers that cost $50. I expected more from these speakers. They do not live up to their numerous positive individual reviews or to my expectations.

Middle of the road, at best

Written By Steve, New England on Friday, April 13, 2007

If tinny and empty are your preference, then this is the speaker for you. They are better than most OEM once the tweeters are tamed, though. I strayed away from Polk this once, but realize my mistake.
The Infinity is so shrill, even with the -3db setting on the tweeters they still are fatiguing to listen to. They lack the warmth and especially the bottom end of most other speakers. With most people crossing over their subs too high, maybe they don't have that problem- but for someone seeking accurate music, these won't do. I think most people buy them for the name, not based on performance.
Setup- JVC AVX1 head unit, Alpine 70x4 amp, Microsub.

Great Speakers, Require Break in

Written By Jay, Texas on Thursday, April 05, 2007

I purchased these speakers around 1 year ago and they have really pleased me. I have them in my civic with a Kicker ZX 200.4 pushing them. Because of their high sensitivity, they don't take a lot of power, but I would highly recommend getting an amp for them if you do purchase them. I would not hook them up to a factory speaker system. Also, they sounded very "bright" at first, but after a few weeks of listening they definitely have toned down. Their bass response is moderate, don't expect booming, just more like popping and voices from the woofer. It hits hard on my amp, but it just isn't like a subwoofer or even 6x9 speaker. I would recommend them for all types of music although I listen to rock and rap mainly. Installation wasn't as easy as I had hoped. Overall, I would highly recommend these speakers and I would definitely get an amp for them.

Great Speakers, Excellent Quality

Written By Mark, Rhinebeck, NY on Monday, March 05, 2007

Installed these in the front of my 1997 Chevy Tahoe. They installed fairly easily using the hardware provided and installation kit from Crutchfield. I do agree the tweeter wires were a bit too short but no big deal on extending them. Had to find a spot for the crossovers that did not interfere with door panel or window operation. I am also running these through an external AMP (Profile HA1040), which added some real zip. Speakers are crisp, clear and have great dynamic range. I highly recommend!! Using with a JVC KD-G320 head unit.

Great speakers

Written By will, new orleans, la on Wednesday, February 07, 2007

the tweeters are pretty bright so you might want to consider using the -3db xover option. they do warm up after a couple of hours. my big gripe is the lack of hardware. the tweeter wires are too short and the speakers seem like the should come w/ matching female ends to hook up to the male ends of the woofer. very odd that infinity overlooked that. it would cost them about $.50 to supply us with those ends. otherwise great value. you do need a subwoofer to get the true benefits of these speakers.
