Axxera

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Axxera X2DMA500

by Zak Billmeier

You've got a double-DIN (4" tall) dash opening — Axxera's X2DMA500 CD receiver lets you take advantage of that extra real estate. You can play all your digital music, and your fingers will appreciate the easy-to-grab dials and large buttons you'll only find on a faceplate this size. And the multi-line display features graphics and easy-to-read text that'll make it easier for you to navigate your music library.

All your tunes at your fingertips
Connect your iPod® or iPhone® to the front-panel USB input, and you can browse your music library with the X2DMA500's controls, letting you stash your iPod safely in your glove box or console. But if you don't have an iPod, that's fine, too — just load up a thumb drive with MP3 and WMA files, plug it into the USB slot, and navigate your files and folders in much the same way.

Got both? Axxera includes a second USB drive in the rear. As a bonus, Axxera's put a handy SD™ card slot on the face too. However you carry your music files, the X2DMA500 can play them.

Talk hands-free
Keep your eyes on the road while you drive with built-in Bluetooth®. Once you pair up your compatible phone, you'll take your calls through the Axxera, listening to your callers over your speakers. Axxera includes an external mic you can mount right nearby, so your callers can hear you loud and clear. Plus you can stream music to the X2DMA500 if your phone supports it.

Dial in just the right sound
Axxera gives you the tools you need to dial in just the right sound. High- and low-pass filters let you send your speakers and subs the frequencies they were designed to handle, which lets them hit harder and run more efficiently. Then use the 3-band EQ to fine-tune your sound — you can even set the center frequency on each band for precise adjustments. Axxera includes a remote for on-the-fly changes.

Build a system
Three sets of preamp outputs make it easier to add amps and subs when you're ready to add on. You can add an HD Radio™ tuner (available soon) for crystal-clear AM/FM sound and alternate programming.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Axxera stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Axxera, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note:
If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

2-DIN Chassis: The Dual Axxera X2DMA500 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve.

Note: As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Full-Graphic LCD: The large, full-graphic LCD and two multi-function rotary control knobs make it easy and convenient to operate the intuitive menu-driven interface.

Display Settings: The headunit offers the following display settings.

      • Scrolling: You can change the scrolling style used for displayed information on the LCD screen. Choose from Off (no scrolling), Once (scrolls once), 15 Secs (scrolls once per 15 seconds), and On (constantly scrolls).
      • LCD Type: You can set the LCD illumination type to Positive (color background with black text), Negative (Black background with color text), or Automatic (switches to positive during daytime and negative during the night).
      • Display Dimmer: The headunit's display features three illumination dimmer settings (High/Medium/Low).

12/24 Hour Clock: The unit's built-in clock will display 12-hour AM/PM time in USA frequency spacing mode. In European frequency spacing mode, the clock will display 24-hour time.

Note: The clock can be set to stay on even when the headunit is turned off.

Power-On Message: This feature allows a "Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening" text message to be shown on the unit's LCD screen when it is powered on.

Demo Mode: You can enable or disable the  units demonstration mode.

      Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The Dual Axxera X2DMA500 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the X2DMA500 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the X2DMA500 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 18 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 60 watts x 4 channels (240 watts total)

Preset EQ Curves: The Dual CD Receiver features the following preset EQ curves to customize your music listening - Flat, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, Rock, or User.

3-Band EQ: The User Preset EQ setting allows you to adjust the unit's 3-Band EQ.

Band Selectable Center Frequency Quality Factor Level
      Bass 50, 100, or 200Hz 0.7, 1.0, 1.4, or 2.0 -6 to +6 dB
      Midrange 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 kHz 0.7, 1.0, 1.4, or 2.0 -6 to +6 dB
      Treble 5, 10, or 15 kHz 0.7, 1.0, 1.4, or 2.0 -6 to +6 dB

Loudness: The Loudness function enhances the bass & treble frequencies at low volumes. The Loudness can be set to 1, 2, 3, or Off.

2V/6Ch Preamp Outputs: The Dual Axxera X2DMA500 is equipped with three pair of 2-Volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front and rear speakers are fading with high-pass crossover filters, while the subwoofer output is non-fading with a low-pass crossover filter.

      • Front/Rear Preamp Outputs (with HPF): If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker preamp outputs (or speaker outputs), you can turn on the unit's High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency of (62, 95, 135Hz, or Off). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.
      • Subwoofer Output (with Sub Control): The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter (55, 85, 120Hz, or Through), phase adjustment (normal/reverse), and output level (0-12).

Source Volume Level: The Source Volume Level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (Tuner, CD, Aux and USB). You can set the source volume level (+/-6dB) for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source.

Program Volume: You can se the X2DMA500 to power-on to the same volume level (1-30) every time.

Key Beep: When this function is enabled, every button press will output a beep tone.

      Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Dual X2DMA500 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, scan, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The built-in AM/FM tuner allows you to store up to 18 FM station presets and 12 AM station presets. You can tune your presets manually or have the headunit do it automatically.

Scan Tuning: Press the Scan button on the included remote control to preview strong stations on the current band, pausing for five seconds at each. Press Scan again to select station or cancel the function.

Local: The Local function allows only strong radio stations to be received, blocking stations with weaker signals.

European Tuning: You can switch the tuner between USA or European tuning.

HD Radio Ready (with iTunes Tagging): HD Radio operation requires connection of the Dual HDM90 HD Radio tuner (070HDM90, sold separately). With HD Radio you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. The Dual HDM90 HD Radio tuner is also capable of iTunes tagging. iTunes tagging gives you the ability to tag a song (up to 64) and stores it to a connected iPod. The next time your iPod is connected to iTunes, the tagged songs are displayed with the option to purchase them from the iTunes Store.

Note: iTunes Tagging can be operated with the following iPod/iPhone models - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4).

      Axxera X2DMA500

Written By nk14tek, St. Louis, MO on Thursday, November 22, 2012
Installed in a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I really like this receiver. The multi-line display via USB with my iPhone that works with Pandora and iHeartRadio is great. Having a rear USB connection helps make the front wiring more clean and is very nice. The EQ capabilities and setup are nice and flexible.

Couple "challenges" I would really like to see them overcome are: - Bluetooth connection seems to drop with my iPhone and often drops the phone call but the receiver still shows connected. - FM adjacent channel rejection - have a few issues with one of the major stations in St. Louis getting noisy or cutting out when I am in the city and areas where signal reception and strength should be excellent.

Installation was easy. Crutchfield did a great job with instructions and supplying the right pieces.

Looking forward to a firmware update to make this an easy 5-star product.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The user interface is very slow to respond. If you want to manually tune from one end of the radio dial to the other you can't just spin the knob, you have to turn very slowly, one click at a time. Spin fast and it just ignores the knob. The sound quality in a phone call is OK, but the dialing interface is terrible. To place a call you click the green phone button, then you have to tell it which phone you want to use (even though I only have one), then it will connect to the phone. From there you can access your phonebook - in random order! You have to turn the knob (again, not too fast!) to scroll through every name in your phone book to find the one you want. Other controls have the same non-responsiveness. If you're on FM2 band and you want to get to FM1 you can't just quickly click the Band button 4 times to get through FM3, AM1, and AM2. You have to click, wait, click, wait, or it can't keep up with you. Other controls are completely non-functional at times. If you're scrolling through songs on your USB media or iPod you can't adjust the volume! But here's the real killer: If you have a USB drive plugged in and turn off the key the unit goes mostly dark, but still has the knobs lit up. In this mode, with the key off, it draws almost an amp and will drain your car battery in a couple of days. Pull the USB drive out and it will go completely dark and turn off.

I wish I had followed my first instincts and returned this in the 60-day window.
      Pros:
      - Has Bluetooth phone and streaming, which my factory radio didn't. - Supports playing from a USB thumb drive - Volume seems to be a little higher than the factory radio
      Cons:
      - Unresponsive controls - Unusable interface to access your phone book for calling - If you're not careful it will fail to shut off and will drain your battery - Dual tech support is difficult to work with and unresponsive

      Reception Issues

I bought this Item because I like all the ways you could connect stuff(2 usb and a sd slot). Those work great but thats only half of how i listen to the radio. I live behind a radio station and when i am with in a couple miles of my home(which is most of the time) I can not get get all my radio station. However when i am on the other side of town i get every thing fine. I have not had this problem with any other car or stereo I have owned in the past. I'm guessing not to many other people live behind a radio station, but i do question how well the tuner operates on this stereo.
      Pros:
      2 usb and sd slot

      Reception

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very nice sounding and looking unit. It is installed easily and was easy to configure for the best sound in my car. (2001 Outback). The display is easy to read day and night and I can even read it with polarized sunglasses. ;)

The menu is intuitive, but you have to do a lot of clicking and turning to adjust your sound settings. There are no quick ways to change the EQ or loudness settings. CD sound quality is good, but a tad slow and extended information like artist, song, etc is not displayed.

Radio pulls in stations well, but again no RDS.

iPod controls work well, but sometimes the USB stops working if bluetooth is connected as well.

Bluetooth controls are intuitive and seem to function well. The built-in microphone sounds just so-so, but the external mic has much better sound. I have experienced random drops in bluetooth connections where my call is connected, but the sound and mic no longer work and I have to grab the phone. This makes hands free, not so "hands free."

If they fix a few of those little problems I mentioned as well as add changing color displays and CD information, this system would be a steal. Recommend of low budget user who wants bluetooth, but does not need it 100% of the time. I would upgrade to another unit, but do not really want to take the dash apart again.
      Pros:
A lot of features for the money. Good sound
      Cons:
Changing audio settings is menu driven and cannot be changed quickly. Bluetooth and USB connections compete causing loss of sound. Bluetooth drops out.

      X2DMA500 in 2007 Kia Rio

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, this is a great product for the price. I purchased it along with the Dual HDM90 so I could have HD Radio. The installation, including the HD receiver, external bluetooth mic, and the headunit took about 2.5 hours. Make sure you buy a harness if you do not order through Crutchfield (which you absolutely should order through Crutchfield).

The HD Radio is crystal clear on FM, mostly providing song title and artist if the station allows. Analog FM quality on AM which makes listening MUCH better. 18 FM presets and 12 AM presets is convenient for repeated traveling.

The bluetooth is pretty fantastic. Syncs to my phone automatically and loads my contacts up. Press a button on the faceplate to answer a call and to end it. No one (not even my mom who always complains about outside noise on cell calls) has mentioned that I sound like I am in a car. Haven't tried the audio stream, but I assume that works well.

USB reading and iPod control is awesome. I have my iPod stuffed in my glovebox with a cable to the back of the unit. It is out of sight and safe from theft. Full iPod control through the unit makes it easy to keep in there until I need to update the iPod with new songs.

Sound is a huge upgrade on the factory unit I had in before. 3 different loudness setting and a lot of nice equalizer control.

For the price, you couldn't ask for more.
      Pros:
Price, Double DIN, front AND rear USB, SD card slot, front aux input, HD ready, external bluetooth mic, sound
      Cons:
Turning car on causes unit to shut off and need to restart the current song on iPod mode. Searching through playlists, phone contacts, etc. is impossible. Buttons feel cheaply built but are actually pretty sturdy. Cannot save phone contact favorites for easy dialing. It is not a more expensive unit (obviously this is unreasonable, but it is a con)

I bought this product based on the other reviews, price, and features. The first one I received worked great initially and looked good. The fit in my car was not 100% perfect but could not be detected unless you knew already. Bluetooth worked great, USB worked great, radio worked great, then the screen died. Literally fade to black, no info, nothing, could not tell what station I was on, song playing off iPod, etc. All the audio would still work, just not screen. Crutchfield's excellent support sent a replacement. That one worked great for about 2 months and then gain the screen died. This time it still tries to display but is completely unreadable. Additionally, the front USB port started to not detect the iPhone when plugged in, sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldn't. Tried multiple cables, different iPods, still same result. If this product was reliable enough it would be a winner, but after two different units went bad, trying to exchange for a different product.
      Pros:
      Features.
      Cons:
      Reliability and build

Finally got around to installing my H/U last night. I have a 2011 Jeep Patriot (NO Info on install from Crutchfield). The unit sounds good and gives way better sound. Finally can make the 6x9 thumb a bit. Love the ability to use my 16GB SD card. Eventually would like a sub, but for now it's good. It's going to take a little getting used to. knobs are OK, nothing special. Not sure why a car stereo needs a remote, but it has one.
      Pros:
SD, USB for music, easy to build upon
      Cons:
Knobs are OK. Display is a little hard to read.

      Only One Glitch

Written By Larry, Winnipeg MB Canada on Friday, March 23, 2012

I was looking for a receiver that had hands free Bluetooth connectivity. This model supports pairing up to 9 devices and has an Auto Re-connect feature and it always re-connected to the last paired phone. However it auto re-connects to the LAST paired phone ONLY. The manual has a subtle hint about this and refers to phones that have connected "recently", but what it really means is the last phone. Since my wife and I share the vehicle, I wanted an auto connect to our respective phones when either of us is driving. With this unit, the only way to connect a phone that was not the last phone that connected, you need to do this (from the manual):

To connect a previously paired device that was not recently connected: 1) If applicable, press and hold to disconnect any connected mobile devices. 2) From Bluetooth mode, press SELECT. "Paired Devices" will appear on the LCD. 3) Turn the tuning knob to cycle through the list of devices 1 through 9. 4) Press SELECT or to connect to the desired device. It must be in range to connect.

There was no way we would take the time to go through this process each time. Tech Support at Crutchfield were surprised that it worked this way, but confirmed that's the way it is.

Except for this one glitch, it appeared to be a great unit and the cell phone clarity was great with the external mic. Since auto re-connect issue was not acceptable to me, Crutchfield was great about allowing me to return it and I'll look for another receiver.
      Pros:
Good value, great sound, good clarity on cell calls.
      Cons:
Only auto re-connects to the LAST paired phone that was connected.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Packed with features, all built in without requiring alot of 'extra' add-ons. If you can figure out the very unfriendly programming access, it sounds much better than the factory unit and the Blue Tooth works well with phone calls AND streaming music ! Two USB ports, an SD card port, auxiliary cable port.... great adaptability. Customizing sound and preferences is tedious and a bit frustrating... could be easier, even for a clean faced unit.
      Pros:
      1) packed with connectivity features 2) good price point
      Cons:
      1) pain in the neck to navigate thru preference settings 2) installation kit from Crutchfield very cheap, poor quality and fit ( Suzuki Forenza )

      I wanted to like it

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to like this unit. I had read positive reviews of a Dual unit with an incredible number of features for the price and almost everyone loved it. This unit was a few features shy of that one (notably built in HD radio) but it had everything I wanted. I ordered a steering wheel control unit and this deck for a 2010 Camry. It went in easy and seemed to function OK. After I a while I started to notice some issues. The unit would enter "psycho" mode where the volume would either go all the way up or all the way down. It would also rapidly change from radio to CD to USB to Aux in random order staying in each mode for a short (couple of seconds) time. Bluetooth sounded pretty good but the connection was unreliable. It would usually connect OK but sometimes not, sometimes it said it was connected on both phone and receiver ends but no sound when I made a call. I contacted tech support and at first the rep said that it sounded like it was in demo mode. I laughed and said maybe it was demon mode and that if anyone saw it take off like that they would never sell one unit! He talked me into trying a reset which I did and it worked OK for one cycle, the next morning it was back to the usual. I called back the rep was great, we decided that it must be a defective unit. He got a new one out right away. Unfortunately the second unit behaved the same as the first.
      Pros:
Lots of features for the money. Crutchfield has a liberal return policy and takes care of its customers. Traded it in on a Pioneer DEH-P8400BH.
      Cons:
Inconsistent and unreliable. Would not hold settings. When the unit is on, the ignition is on acc but the car is not started, it makes a loud noise when starting the car. The only good thing about this is that it seems to reset the unit and gets it out of psycho mode. Dial feels kind of cheap.

I wanted to replace the stock double din in my VW Passat, but didn't want to go with a deck that didn't look OEM. This deck looks right at home in my dash. You'll find a lot of features built in that some units more than twice the price don't have. One feature I love is the high pass crossover which works on the internal amp. I've got an amp running my subs and all the full range speakers in the car are running just fine off the internal amp. I was contemplating adding an amp for my full range speakers, but I don't find it necessary right now. Although an audiophile may beg to differ, my system sounds just fine.

Some of you may shudder that this brand is part of the Dual company. But keep in mind that they're building this brand as their high end value driven product. The buld quality is excellent!
      Pros:
Price, Price, Price OEM Styling Sufficient power Bluetooth streaming
      Cons:
      Lack of color schemes

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this is a great unit for a great price. 2 USB ports, SD card slot and Bluetooth with an external mic were all key features for me. The unit sounds fantastic with the stock speakers I am not into amps and thumping sub-woofers. I simply like to enjoy, crisp, clear, rock and country. The unit does a terrific job.

It works nicely with my 80gb IPod classic. The cable is plugged into the rear USB and my IPod can stay out of site in the glove box.

Playback from the SD card and a USB thumb drive is very handy. I have about 9 gigs of music on a 16gb SD card, so I don't have to bring my IPod everywhere. The card and thumb drive have WMA, MP3 and MPEG-4 files on them and all play nicely. I did, however, have to go in and un-hide the WMAs on my computer so the head unit could read them.

The Bluetooth is fantastic. The external mic is routed to the driver's side visor. Everyone on the other end can hear me fine and I don't have to fumble around for a headset when driving.

Crutchfield customer service is the benchmark for all customer service. They were happy to handle an annoying muli-gift card purchase and made is simple and seamless. The unit came with the adaptors to plug into the Pathfinder's wiring harness and they provided great detailed instructions for opening the dash to install.

Note: The factory brackets required modification so that I wouldn't have to cut the dash panel. The unit is in place and looks like it was installed on the assembly line.
      Pros:
Front and rear USB ports. SD Card slot. Simple IPod interface. Clear Bluetooth with external mic. Sounds great as is yet still expandable
      Cons:
I haven't figured out how to initate voice dial feature on my Blackberry by hitting the call button on the head unit. Would have liked the display color to match the dash color, but all of the other features outweighed this. The menus take a little getting uses to. Not too bad to navigate once you've done it a few times.

      Pretty good in Lincoln Aviator

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this to replace factory radio/CD changer in my wife's 2004 Lincoln Aviator. One big concern I had was getting a unit where the dashboard door would close, and this one allows that. Sound quality is comparable to the factory unit. Installation was easy with the kits recommended by Crutchfield, including integrating the factory steering wheel controls. Ability to pair bluetooth with multiple phones is nice.

One other nice thing about the radio is the interface. It's got straightforward knobs and buttons. I don't like multifunction keys, especially when driving.

Only downside is there is a thump from the sub woofer on power up. It's the same noise you get by touching the audio lead to the amp. I think the receiver is powering up the amp before it puts any signal on the sub woofer output. Someday I may try to rig a delay on the amp power.
      Pros:
Flat enough it works in a Lincoln Aviator. Simple, clear user interface. Sounds at least as good as the factory radio.
      Cons:
Thump from woofer on power up.

      Good head unit.

Bluetooth works great, and I love that you can save and easily select more than one device. This makes it easy for my wife to pair her phone when she drives my truck. Initial pairing was a little awkward, but once that's out of the way, subsequent connections are quick and easy. Voice and music quality over Bluetooth are both great.

Used in it's telephone capacity, it works wonderfully. You can even dial from the remote, and it sync'd with my address book, allowing my to select contacts to call right from the head unit. The included external microphone is sensitive and clear. I can whisper to the person I'm calling, even while driving down the highway.

Sound is good. Gets loud with no distortion. Even at max volume, distortion is minimal. It does seem like there is a flat spot in the power curve between volume settings 30-40, but I don't have the audacity to call that a 'real' complaint. Also, some adjustment to the factory EQ is needed, but this is normal with any head unit.

iPod interface is good. Works well, integrated my Gen5 iPod video seamlessly.

Being able to change the LED colors would be nice, but it doesn't do that, and doesn't claim anywhere that it does.
      Pros:
Full featured and expandable at a good price.
      Cons:
It is what I expected it to be. I've had it for about 2 weeks at the time of this review. No disappointments so far.

Overall this is a great deal. It's lower priced than other double-din radios, but with all the features & options you could ever want.

It's more streamlined looking too... I didn't want something too flashy or gaudy, I prefer the factory-look.

I'm not sure why some reviews report issues with USB playback, it works great for me. I'm using an off-brand slow 8GB USB stick filled to capacity with no problems. It was weird using USB connected to my Droid 2 though, it started playing every voice recording for Google Maps, which was kind of amusing but not desirable.

Bluetooth streaming audio works pretty well if I control it from my Droid 2, but not so hot from the radio. I don't see myself using it too often, but it does work.

Answering calls via Bluetooth works great, but I only recommend using the included wired Mic. The built-in internal Mic sounds too far away. Dialing calls via Bluetooth is too complicated though, so I just use the voice commands on the Droid 2 itself.
      Pros:
Reasonable price; simple design; smooth operation; lots of inputs (USB, SD, AUX, HD Radio, BT streaming)
      Cons:
Wish I could change the color scheme and/or disable the illuminated knobs; USB song switching is awkward with the right knob; Bluetooth dialing is too complicated for me; knobs feel kinda cheap.

After a week of use i would say its a good unit - as stated before some of the interface is buggy - my only issue is with crutchfields data base - was told ( even after calling ) that i needed a amp bypass - not only was it not needed but none of the wiring harnesses matched up - after a call they were more than willing to make it right - thing is i had my dash all tore apart - so i went and did what i despise the most and cut and spliced wires - i would recommend that you take your factory unit out first and tell them what the factory wiring harness looks like first - so this has nothing to do with the unit i know. The unit for the price and options is a solid buy. Bluetooth is awesome ( go into menu option and set external mic ). Went and set iPod control to manual which i liked better. the display is ok - no "WOW" factor. over all i'm happy with the unit. never give 5 stars for anything - but this unit is worth 4 stars. read the manual - theres some settings that you will want to adjust.

      Pros

For the price, it has a lot of great features.

It has a nice factory look when installed, and at a glance, it works great.

The Bluetooth works flawlessly with my Droid 3 phone. Calls and audio streaming are great. It will even play the sound from games/videos while I'm playing them on the phone. Bluetooth connection to the phone is very fast compared to other units I've used.

Ipod controls are not sluggish like some head units I've used.

      Cons

The buttons only work when they feel like it, and it is equally unresponsive to my steering wheel controls.

Everytime I shut it off, it restarts whatever song I was on (using the ipod). This is the first head unit (and I've used A LOT with my ipod) that I've had do this. It is somewhat sluggish to start playing my ipod when the car is turned on (about 15-20 seconds). It also sometimes changes sources when I change to the next track while using my ipod. It will go to "Aux", then "Tuner", then back to the ipod and finally play the next track.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, there is no dimmer input on this head unit. Why? I don't know, but you just have to control it yourself.

The buttons/knobs feel kind of cheap, and the display shows dust almost immediately after cleaning.

      Overall

It's a good buy if you can deal with all the bugs. I was going to exchange it for something else, but I cannot find anything else the meets all my needs. So I guess I'll just deal with the bugs until something better comes out.

I'm an interaction designer, so bad interfaces bug the heck out of me, but even without accounting for that, this stereo is a very good buy. This is the best feature set I've found at the price point.

Pros: + Installation was very easy. + Bluetooth works great. + 2x USB + 1x SD = more expandability than many $500+ decks. + Good looking static display.

Cons: - Unit doesn't remember your place after powering off, for any input. - Trying to go back a track when shuffling sends you to a random track. - Separate pause and mute buttons. - Moving text on this display is unreadable.

The biggest pain i had with this was i lost all my AM/FM signal...static! Found the problem...faulty antenna adapter (duh..missed a wire). NOW...all is great! i've had it installed about a week now, tweaked settings and such. Sounds much fuller when you play with the EQ and such. Also great signal to my subwoofer =D. I don't have Iphone or Ipod but i have a Windows phone and so far all the bluetooth works just fine with it as i'd hoped. Haven't tried SD card slot yet, and am as we speak ordering the HD Radio addon unit YIPPEE!

      Great radio for the money

Written By ScottM, Richmond, TX on Thursday, September 01, 2011

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

PROS: - Comprehensive display that is easily readable in direct sunlight. - OEM look, the font used on the buttons is identical to the font on my factory radio. - Actually lets you shuffle ALL songs without having to trigger it from the iPod/iPhone. - Complete iPod search. - Much better sound quality than factory Equinox radio. - extensive EQ controls. - Startup volume setting for each source. Leave it cranked when you turn it off. Turn it on...volume is where you pre-set it. Great for those of us who forget to turn it down before exiting vehicle. - go download the manual and read all the features for yourself. It's worth it.

CONS: - Bluetooth phone, when reading my contacts from my iPhone 4, if the numbers are listed with ( and ) around the area code, the radio will only dial the area code. Not a deal breaker to me because I don't talk on the phone very much. I only wanted bluetooth for when people call me. - Scrolling through hundreds of artists with the knob can be a pain. - no illumination wire, so you have to dim the radio manually. But I find the medium setting is perfectly fine for night and day use. - If you get in, plug your iPhone in before the BT connects, the sound will default to the BT. But the radio still thinks you want to play through USB. Just be patient, let the phone connect (takes 10 seconds or so), then plug it in. - faceplate and buttons look inexpensive compared to the bigger name brands I've owned, but they take a beating.
