Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Clarion DB285USB

by Ken Nail

Clarion built the DB285USB CD receiver for convenience, with the ability to play all of your favorite media file types and an ergonomic design that puts all the important function buttons in easy reach. The versatile stereo also features user-friendly front-panel USB and auxiliary inputs that allow you to plug in your thumb drives, hard-disk drives, and portable audio players.

Gone are the days of lugging around your CD collection. The DB285USB plays MP3 and WMA files, whether burned to disc or stored on thumb drive. You can carry an entire music library in your pocket and plug it into the front-panel USB slot, or burn a road trip's worth of music onto a single disc.

A muscular built-in amplifier keeps the sound coming on strong. The Z-Enhancer equalizer offers three preset settings, and the Magna Bass EX bass boost kicks up the lows when you want some thump. Two sets of preamp outputs give you the option of connecting outboard amplifiers and subwoofers.

      Features
      External Device Controls

      Features

Ergonomic Face Design: The Clarion DB285USB features an easy-to-use rotary volume control and large illuminated buttons on the face which are laid out in an asymmetrical design to place the most used features within a specific area for ease of use and less user distraction. The front panel USB connector and 3.5mm auxiliary input on the DB285USB make it easy to connect a variety of external audio devices.

Digital LCD Display: The 13-segment digital LCD display, with blue background and white characters, on the DB285USB allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in all lighting conditions.

MP3/WMA Playback: The unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using ISO9660 Level 1 or 2, Joliet, or Romeo formats. The player can recognize up to 8 hierarchical levels, 256 files per folder and 578 total files. Bit rates for MP3 are 8-320 kbps, plus VBR (Variable Bit Rates). Bit rates for WMA are 48-192 kbps. This unit is compatible with, and will display MP3 and WMA ID3 tags up to 64 characters.

Auxiliary Input: The DB285USB feature a front panel 3.5mm auxiliary input so you connect your external portable audio player or portable satellite radio receiver to this headunit. You can adjust the Auxiliary input sensitivity level from Low, Mid, to High to match the volume output of your connected external audio device.

4ch/1.8V RCA Output: The Clarion DB285USB features 4ch/1.8V RCA line level outputs. This unique design assigns one pair of RCA outputs to the front channels, while the other pair is assigned as a subwoofer output. The rear channels are delivered through the unit's built-in 50W x 4 amplifier. You can fade front line out to rear internal amplifier for overall system balance, while the subwoofer output level can be independently adjusted through the non-fade volume control feature incorporated into the unit's rotary volume control from -6 to +6.

Z-Enhancer Plus: Z-Enhancer Plus features four bands of equalization boost (B-Boost, Impact, Exite and Custom). Along with 2 bands of parametric equalization, the Z-Enhancer Plus circuitry enables sound adjustments with more flexibility than the basic Bass and Treble tone controls.

      • B-Boost: Bass is emphasized from -3 to +3.
      • Impact: Bass and treble are emphasized from -3 to +3.
      • Excite: Bass, treble and midrange are emphasized from -3 to +3.
      • Custom: Adjusts the bass and treble independently from -7 to +7. You can set the effected bass frequency to 60, 80, 100, or 200 Hz and the Q-factor to 1, 1.25, 1.5 or 2.0. The effected treble frequency can be set to 10k, 12.5k, 15k, or 17.5k.

Magna Bass EX (Extend): The Magna Bass Extend feature does not adjust the low frequencies like the normal sound adjustment function, but emphasizes the deep bass frequencies to provide you with a dynamic sound.

Disc-In-Play-Function: This feature allows you to turn the power to the unit "on" and start playing the disc automatically when the disc is inserted even if the unit is not powered up, as long as the ignition key is turned to the "on" or "acc" position.

Scan Play: This function allows you to locate and play the first 10 seconds of all the tracks recorded on a CD or the first 10 seconds of the first track of all the folders on an MP3/WMA disc.

Last Position Memory: If you turn off the unit while a disc is playing, it will resume playback at the stopping point when it is turned on again.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Screen Saver: This unit is provided with a Screen Saver function which allows you to show various kinds of patterns and characters in the operation status indication area of the display in a random order. You can turn this function on or off. If the button operation is performed with the screen saver function on, the operation display corresponding to the button operation is shown for about 30 seconds and the display returns to the screen saver display.

OEM Remote Ready: The unit also features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit to allow you to keep your vehicle's radio steering wheel remote controls and/or rear seat radio controls when used with the optional SWI-JACK interface adapter (part # 127SWIJACK, sold separately). The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Harley Davidson, Honda, Hummer, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen vehicles. Please consult "Outfit My Car" to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Detachable Face: The headunit's face detaches to prevent theft and comes supplied with a hard plastic carrying case.

Mounting: You can install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal. When ISO-DIN mounting, you will need to use your vehicle radio's original factory ISO screws.

      External Device Controls

USB Port: The front-panel USB port allows you to connect and play USB Mass Storage devices loaded with MP3 and WMA files. This unit is compatible with USB 1.1/2.0 with maximum data transfer rates of 12mbps. The USB port can be used with USB memory media carrying up to 65,025 songs. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps and WMA files with a bit rate from 48-192 kbps are supported. Titles up to 64 characters can be displayed while in USB mode. The DB285USB offers the following playback operation of your USB Mass Storage device - Play, Pause, Track selection, Fast-forward/backward, Scan play, Repeat play, Random play and Folder selection.

Note: This unit's USB port is not compatible with iPod. Copy-protected WMA files cannot be played on this unit.

Bluetooth Ready: The DB285USB is compatible with Clarion's BLT370 Bluetooth system via its front panel 3.5mm stereo minijack inputs. The BLT370 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth cellular phone and wireless streaming audio from any Bluetooth compatible portable audio device. The DB285USB can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers.

      Clarion DB285USB

Written By Yash, Martin, MS on Sunday, June 28, 2009

Good unit for the price but definitely not high end. Been using for about five months with no problem. Looks nice. Display does not blind you at night but controls are easy to see. Got it mainly for MP3 and front loading USB and Aux In. The user manual is a must to navigate the function/setup selections. FM sensitivity is weak in rural areas compared to the Pioneer I replaced.

Sad it's discontinued, but happy I got one!

Installed in a 1991 Chrysler Lebaron
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently bought a 1991 Chrysler LeBaron Convertible to fix back up, and this HU forms the core of the stereo system. The LeBaron has 6 factory speaker locations, two 3.5" in the dash, two 5.25" in the doors, and two 5.25" in the rear side panels. I needed an entire new system, as the one that was in the vehicle was a cheap aftermarket. The supplied wiring harness made connecting up to the factory wiring a breeze (Once I repaired the factory harness where the previous owners cut it), and the stereo works great! It puts out enough power to be heard nicely over the wind and road noise on the interstate with the top down, and with the JVC BS-BB2 self powered sub installed over the center hump beneath the dash, I have no problems with loss of the bass that is so inherent in convertibles.

I am sad to see this is a discontinued item, as I would recommend the unit to anyone. After a month or so of use, the only quibbles I have with it is that the display can be a bit hard to see in sunlight, especially with sunglasses on. A bonus, is that the USB port can read external hard drives, so I have loaded up mine, and can cruise down the road with 100 GB worth of continuous music!

My passengers enjoy being able to control it with the included remote as well! I can't recommend it enough!

      Highly Recommended

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I highly recommend this stereo. Aux and USB inputs on a reliable, good-sounding HU for under $100 is an incredible deal. It's not the flashiest stereo, but it matches the interior (red lighting) of my car almost perfectly -- most people don't realize it's aftermarket. Also, the build quality of the stereo is pretty good (especially impressed with the volume dial, which clicks firmly and solidly into place). All inputs work exactly as advertised.

The adjustment settings for the bass are exactly what you'd want (adjustable Q and frequency). The treble adjustment is a bit wide (Q is set wide from the factory and is not adjustable), but at least the frequency is adjustable between 10-17.5khz. I paired the HU with factory speakers (wanted a nice, cheap setup) and after dialing in the treble/bass adjustments, it sounds pretty good.

Overall, one of the best purchases I have made.

My first aftermarket, self-installed radio/CD player. I am fully satisfied with its performance, though I'm having to learn a whole new set of controls.

Installation was much easier than expected. The wiring harness perfectly matched factory color codes. A call to customer service helped remove any doubts that I was doing it properly. Customer service was prompt, knowledgeable, and accurate. From the time I dialed their number until I was fully satisfied, I was on the phone about two minutes.

You can't go wrong for the money with this reciever. I was looking for a replacement for the radio in my beater work car that had aux and usb inputs. This unit has impressed me greatly. The sound adjustments are a little tough to dial in at first since the process is a little complicated, I recommend keeping the manual in the car. The sound quality is great and the price was unbeliveable. The display can be a little tough to read in bright sunlight but I have the same problem with the Alpine deck in my wife's car that cost 5 times as much. As usual, Crutchfield service was top notch. I buy all my electronics from them and always will.

first off i would just like to say thaks to the crutchfield team as they surpassed even my high expectations. i recieved the item in just a few days with the unit and all accessories packaged neatly. As far as the unit, i love it. front usb w/3.5mm jack is the bomb. no more lugging cd's around. clarity and overall sound quality is very good. i was just upgrading a factory unit and would have paid this price even without all the bonuses. install was a snap with the included coverplate and wiring harness. the remote was also nice however i have yet to use it. i plan on letting my daughter use it when she rides in the back seat off the truck. you guys definately set the bar high. thanks again.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I didn't want to spend a lot of money to replace my stock radio. I just wanted a simple receiver with a CD player...this receiver exceeded my expectations! It has a great functional receiver and CD player, but the USB and AUX inputs are just great extras to have. Not to mention how nice it was to get the kit and instructions that matched up with my car. Crutchfield is great to make it so simple. I think the actual install into my car took about 30 mins since the instructions told me exactly what to remove on my dashboard. I was a bit nervous about all the wires an connecting the adapter, but Crutchfield tech support walked me through my questions at 10pm on a Saturday! Crutchfield gives customer service a GOOD name again!

For Me...Right Price = Great Radio

Written By Monty, Grove City, OH on Wednesday, April 29, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I won't cut this radio some slack because of the price like some people tend to assume. Correct, the price is not bad; so my wallet is thanking me.
1: The sound is great for my needs. Sounds better than my previous Dual head unit.
2: Most radios have a faceplate. This one will take some getting use to but I'll live. It is in my convertible...pretty much any radio is difficult to see with the top down. Plus, my kids like the moving characters on the screen.
3: Also, I listen to radio perhaps more than others who have reviewed this unit, and the reception is noticeably stronger than the stock radio with Infinity speakers and the aforementioned Dual head unit. C'est la vie.

      Works Exactly as Advertised

Written By Jason, Ruston, LA on Saturday, April 25, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased 2 of these units. One for my wife's minivan and one for my truck. Both were fairly simple to install. I called Crutchfield once on each install, but if I had read the instructions better, I would not have needed to do that. Once the units were installed, i plugged in a 8GB thumb drive in my truck and a 2GB in my wife's van and they played great. It took very little time to read in the files and begin playing. I had a Sony with front USB in my old Crown Vic and I think this unit is better than the Sony and this unit was half the price. It has plenty of power for the factory speakers. The only con I might say would be that some menus are a little confusing to navigate, but a quick read of the user's manual and I was good to go. I would definitely purchase this unit again and I would of course buy it from Crutchfield.

Cons: The sound (bass, treble, etc) are little annoying to adjust & I'd like to know if the screensaver can be shut off. I would like to see the time instead.

      Pros: VALUE!

P.S. For my 1998 Subaru Legacy I did not need the mounting bracket/dash kit so unless you get it free don't worry about it.

Install time including wiring was approx. 1 hr!

This is simply the best Cd receiver you can get for the money. It comes with plenty of features. I-pod compatible and USB slot for flash memory! Lots of tuning features for the best sound in your car!

It is some what hard to see in the day but at night it is the coolest looking thing ever! You get a good brand name CD receiver with 4 preamp outputs,Ipod compatibility, USB slot and plenty of other features for a great price. Easy decision! Crutchfield gave me all the installation gear for installing it myself! Thanks Crutchfield!

Sounds great. Only thing is I whish the common controls like Bass, Treble and Fade were not buried in a menu but I guess from looking at the images of the unit I should've known this would be the case.

Also, as most others commented, the default screen saver is the lamest thing. You can disable it. Why would skilled technicians, scientists, marketers of Clarion decide in a meeting that having a screen animate '/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/' on a screen would be a great idea?

      Clarion DB285USB

I bought this unit and isntalled it in my Mazda B4000 4door. The wiring adapter and dash installation kit made it easy. I got it mainly for the USB and AUX jack so I can play my MP3 player and use thumb drives. I am very happy with the unit sounds great through the Kenwood 8 x 6, 3 ways I installed with it. I did the wiring using the solder method and used shrink tube over each connection. Makes a neat and tight installation, only I wish I would have pulled the stock unit out before I did the wiring. The adapter coupled with the Clarion wiring made for a long bunch of wires that needed to be stored behind the dash. You may want to shorten up the harness a bit, check before you do your wiring. The other thing was the back brace, it slides onto a track under the dash. That took some fooling with to get the it just right, but I'm picky! After that the unit snapped right in, works and looks great. A good unit at a great price, thanks Crutchfield.

Many reviewers seem to cut this unit some slack due to its low price. For the price it is not bad, but:
1: The sound isn't all that great.
2:The unit might as well not have a faceplate because it is completely unreadable in sunlight while wearing polarized sunglasses.
3:I listen to radio perhaps more than others who have reviewed this unit, and the recption is noticeably weaker than the stock radio.
