What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Our take on the Axxess ASWC

by Zak Billmeier

Are you looking to install an aftermarket stereo in your car, but want to keep your handy steering wheel audio controls? This ASWC interface from Axxess allows you to connect the steering wheel controls in a wide variety of vehicles to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Jensen, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is straightforward - you usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, this interface automatically detects which vehicle it's connected to — if not, you can manually program the interface for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot lets you keep the ASWC current as updates become available. Dimensions: 2-3/4"W x 11/16"H x 1-7/8"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Features

Overview: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface (ASWC) lets you retain your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an SWC-compatible aftermarket radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required. Metra does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Compatibility: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface is universal and can be used on most any vehicle with factory steering wheel controls. The Axxess ASWC-1 supports the following aftermarket head unit manufactures - Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Eclipse, JVC, Clarion, Dual, Jensen, Visteon, and Valor. The aftermarket head unit must have a SWC (Steering Wheel Control) 3.5mm input or steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow).

Note: Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle and aftermarket head unit is compatible.

Programming: The ASWC can be programmed in one of two ways. It can be done automatically or manually.

  • Auto Detection: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface has the ability to auto-detect certain vehicles and aftermarket radios. It will preset the steering wheel controls to the aftermarket radio automatically, so no programming is required.
  • Manual Programming: If your vehicle is not auto-detection compatible, you can still manually program the ASWC to your vehicle's factory steering wheel controls and aftermarket head unit.

Reconfiguring Controls: If desired, the ASWC can be manually programmed so you can make your vehicle's steering wheel controls function the way you want them to; limited only by the functions of the aftermarket radio.

LED Feedback: The steering wheel control interface features an integrated LED to indicate programming status.

Non-Volatile Memory: The Axxess ASWC has a non-volatile memory, which means the steering wheel control interface will remember the programming even if the device is disconnected from your vehicle.

Axxess ASWC

Written By Anonymous, Mission Viejo, CA on Friday, April 19, 2013
Installed in a 2004 Toyota 4Runner
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not much to say since it's a pretty straightforward unit. The plug & play advertisement is true, I can't complain there. The only issue we have is the scan buttons do a radio station search rather than skip through the presets like the factory system did - not sure if that's a function of the adapter or the head unit.
Pros:
Plug & play, fast "learning" and easy to install
Cons:
Large control boxes hard to fit into the limited dash space, buttons don't work exactly like stock

Axxess without success

Written By GaryV, DeFuniak Springs, FL on Thursday, April 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried to get the box to read my set up without success. I called Crutchfield tech support 3 times during a 45 minute period - wire hook up checked out each time. For some reason the Axxess box did not pick up my system. It was a disappointment. However, Crutchfield sent me prepaid postage return and credited my purchase no mussy no fussy.
Pros:
Curtchfield tech support was patient and accomodating.
Cons:
Axxess did not work on my system.

Axxess ASWC

Written By Anonymous, Enon, Ohio on Tuesday, April 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used this ASWC interface unit with a Pioneer DEH-6500BT CD/Radio. The Axxess unit did not program itself automatically for my car like the web site and Crutchfield said it would. One of the three steering wheel buttons wouldn't work. I had to program it manually per the instructions. I spoke to Crutchfield technical support during this process and they sent me to the Axxess technical support people. It all worked out, but it was more hassle than I had expected. And to get the Axxess wire bundle to connect with my car's wiring hardness properly, the splice connector I had bought from a local shop did not work; it didn't even cut through the wire insulation, and I ultimately had to cut the proper wire in the car's wire bundle and solder in the new Axxess wire to the reconnected wire in the wire bundle. That was a bit nerve wracking since I don't do this kind of thing very often. Oh, and the Axxess instructions said to connect this particular wire to "Pin #3" of the car's wire bundle to the original radio. It was Crutchfield tech support that gave me the wire's color code so that I could more easily identify it in those cramped quarters in my car.

It works...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While this device does exactly what it's supposed to do I can't give it 5 stars simply because it's almost impossible to determine which wire to use for your car. Their web site is horrible. I had to call them to find out which wire to use. However, once I was using the correct wire the device worked like a charm.
Pros:
Great having functional steering wheel controls again
Cons:
Horrible instructions/web site

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy to install! Your factory steering wheel controls work perfect every time. If used with the GMOS-06 Gm adapter, simply plug it in and push up on the volume button on steering wheel with stereo on and you're done.
Pros:
Easy to install, very compact, and no lag time on response.
Cons:
It's not free LOL!

This unit works great, it was easy to install in my 2011 Nissan Frontier to my Pioneer Avh-X5500BHS. I have seen other comments that say this unit messes with the SiriusXM tuner, Which I did not have any problems with at all.
Pros:
Easy to install, great instructions. Took less then ten mins to install and program.
Cons:
Cutting into factory harness.

Junk in an FJ Cruiser

Written By Village40, Nashville, TN on Tuesday, March 26, 2013

This steering wheel adapter is easy to install and programs quickly. It worked quite well for a day or two. After the first couple of days, the steering wheel controls became spotty at best. I would say this works probably 15% of the time, with the exception of the "source" button, which works about 90% of the time. If you have an Appradio 2 and an FJ Cruiser, I implore you not to waste your money on this item.
Pros:
Easy Install Quick Programming

Integrate with your Steering Wheel Controls

Written By Gil at Gil-A-Monster Sound and Recording, Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas on Tuesday, March 19, 2013
Installed in a 2008 Mazda MX5
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit did exactly what it said it would do. In my case, it acted as a middle man between the car's computer and the stereo receiver allowing complete control from the steering wheel. One wired in, it recognized the car and receiver so no programming was required.
Pros:
Was able to recognize both the car and stereo requiring no programming
Cons:
Had to be wired to, and not through the factory wiring harness. The manufacturer's technical support was lacking but a quick call to Crutchfield Tech support had it up and running in minutes. Crutchfield seemed more knowledgable and was definitely more helpful that the manufacturer.
