Alpine

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Alpine SWE-10S4

by John Pollard

Nice price, big bass

Alpine's Type-E subwoofers will fill up your ride with big bass without draining your bank account. These low-profile subs handle plenty of power, and still use the same tried-and-true design that's made this line so popular with budget-conscious bassheads. You'll get an amazing amount of rumble when you add one or two of these to your ride.

Built tough

The SWE-10S4 10" subwoofer handles up to 250 watts RMS. Alpine treats the pulp cone with Kevlar so it won't buckle or distort under heavy use, while the tough rubber HAMRS surround allows for maximum excursion while keeping the cone under control for more accurate bass. Extra venting maximizes air flow through your speaker, dissipating heat and increasing the sub's reliability. The heavy-gauge, stamped steel cage holds its shape through the most relentless pounding, so the bass stays tight.

Highlights:

  • 10" subwoofer with 4-ohm voice coil
  • Kevlar reinforced pulp cone with HAMRS Santoprene rubber surround
  • frequency response: 32-200 Hz
  • power handling: 50-250 watts RMS
  • peak power: 750 watts
  • sensitivity: 86.9 dB
  • top-mount depth: 4-3/4"
  • sealed box volume: 0.53-0.88 cu. ft
  • ported box volume: 0.78-1.33 cu. ft.

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-E subwoofer uses a parabolic cone structure, with a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone and a Poly-Mica dust cap. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. The oversized, inverted poly-mica dust cap increases rigidity and virtually eliminates cone distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of Santoprene, that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive Conex spider ensures reliability and helps avoid interference typical of many high-excursion designs.

Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm) 3-layer voice coil offers power handling up to 250W RMS / 750W Peak. The high-temperature voice coil is wound on a spiral cut aluminum former.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Airflow Management System: Alpine's patented Airflow Management System combined with Perimeter Venting actively manages the outer voice coil temperatures by forcing air directly across the heatsink system.

Vented Pole Piece: The vented pole piece is flared at both ends to maximize air flow from inside the motor structure. The Airflow Back Plate combined with the Compound Radius Curve Extended Pole Geometry ensures that hot air is not trapped inside the motor structure.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept pin connectors, single or dual banana plugs, or bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Gasket Cover: Alpine uses a Concealed Mount Gasket System to cover the mounting screws for a clean look. The black rubber gasket ring comes already installed on the woofer and needs to be removed before drilling the mounting screws (not supplied). The gasket ring then snaps back into place once the woofer is mounted.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Alpine recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume between 0.53 and 0.88 cubic feet, with an ideal volume of 0.53 cubic feet. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 0.78 cubic feet to 1.33 cubic feet, with the ideal size being 1.04 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 10" (W) x 1" (H) x 18" (L).

Nice Clean Bass

Written By Triplx07, Pittsburgh on Thursday, January 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these subs in a pair of old Lanzar boxes That fit under the rear seat of my chevy silverado ext cab. The Boxes where 12yrs old, and I just wanted to update the subs for my new amp(200w x 2).. Lanzar(Even though the make a decent product) sales service is lously ,and could not supply me with a part # for a small enclosure replacement sub. So after looking around I decided on these Alpine subs. My enclosures have a three inch port, and is a wedge style box. I knew this wasn't ideal for these subs, but figured for the price I would give it a shot. Glad I did. The subs hit hard and clean.. Very happy with my purchase.
Pros:
Good value for the money.
Cons:
Nothing so far.

Absolute Love!

Written By Al, Houston, TX on Thursday, January 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This 10 is simply AMAZING! I had it installed and I had no real expectations other than it should work and I was blown away! I was set back at how hard it hit inside my accord coupe and not make a hint of rattle. I matched it up with the Apline RMS 500 amp and it's clear to see why Alpine is simply one of the best in the game! For the price of this sub you seriously can't go wrong. This thing hits HARD and yet the music is very clear! I can't express how much I love this sub and I have had a few others but this one works for what I was looking for and more.
Pros:
Clear, powerful, hits hard, cheap
Cons:
None.

Alpine SWE-10S4

Written By Marcos Ripoll, Boulder, CO on Monday, December 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These subs hit so hard for the price! I bought two of these and matched them with an alpine 500 rms amp and its connected to my alpine stereo. The bass is tight and can be heard from inside a building when parked outside. These are totally worth your money. My neighbor yelled at me to turn it down haha. And i get looks every time I drive. The compactness of my mini cooper adds at least five more decibels of base too! These are a great buy!

Great Sound for the Money

Written By b21w, Duluth, MN on Friday, November 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agree with the other 5 star reviews. For the money I haven't experienced such a rich bass over various types of music, while being able to handle a good amount of power in a small airspace and mounting depth. I'm a fan period.

In addition my amp was tested out at much more than it's rating (500W RMS @ 2ohms), running around 760W RMS total into 2 of these subs and they are holding their own so far.
Pros:
dB and sound quality combined with "boom" for a 10".
Cons:
None so far.

Darren

Written By Darren, Wilmington, NC on Tuesday, October 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would rate this subwoofer a perfect 5 star rating for playing Classic Rock, Rock, or Heavy Metal. I am currently just using one sub and powering it sub with an Alpine 300 RMS Amp. and it provides plenty of power for the sub. This sub has a nice, clean tone, and when adjusted either through the head unit and/or the amp, it can readily adapt and reproduce deep bass. I would definitely recommend this sub to anyone looking to play rock music, you will not be disappointed!!!

These hit so hard, couldn't believe it for the money. Handle rap to country. Being pushed by a ken wood excelon700-5. Into 2 ohm.
Pros:
Wire attachments, cost, sound? Great for a small box application
Cons:
Not a fan of the huge removable trim ring, it looks good, but had to remove it for my box. ( mande to remove and comes off easy, can be re installed) mnot that big of a deal.

More bang for the buck!!! GREAT product!!!

Written By Music4Life, Michigan on Friday, June 01, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I usually don't buy stuff online, without there being any reviews...but I figured I would take the chance of purchasing 2 of these Alpine subs. These subs bump so hard in my Jeep Cherokee! If you want true bass, without over-powering your music...I would definitely recommended these! Alpine is a great brand for subs! Another great thing about purchasing these, was that the customer service was amazingly well, way better then most online stores I have purchased from! Shipped the day I purchased!
Pros:
true great deep bass, awesome looks, easy to install
Cons:
