Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-102

by Zak Billmeier
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine designed this receiver for great sound

Alpine's CDE-102 CD receiver offers front-panel USB and auxiliary inputs, giving you lots of playback options in addition to the CD slot. Connect an MP3 player or satellite radio to the auxiliary input, or plug a thumb drive loaded with music files into the USB input — either way, you've got plenty of entertainment to keep you company on the road.

your image description

Add Alpine's optional cable, and you'll get complete control over your iPod® or iPhone™ right on the stereo. Alpine's unique Percentage Search feature gets you through your playlist at warp speed, so you can find the song you want in no time.

Build a system

You'll find the two sets of preamp outputs handy for adding amps and subs to create a well-rounded system. You can fine-tune your sound using the adjustable bass and treble controls, while a built-in high-pass filter lets you remove low bass from your speakers, allowing your system to run more efficiently and sound better. Many stereos only let you adjust your subwoofer level, but the CDE-102 gives you control over the bass bandwidth and frequency, so you can tweak your system's low end to perfection.

Bluetooth convenience

Connect Alpine's Bluetooth® adapter to conduct safe hands-free calls with your compatible phone when you're driving. When a call comes in, your music is muted and you hear your caller over your vehicle's speakers. Your phone stays safe in your purse or your pocket, while you keep both hands on the wheel.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Hands-on Research for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The CD player comes supplied with a hard plastic face case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

    Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4-channel
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4-channel

Sound: The Sound Setting functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes:

    • Bass Control:
      • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
      • Bass Band Width: 1 (narrow) to 4 (wide)
      • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    • Treble Control:
      • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
      • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    • High Pass Filter (HPF): the speaker level and front line level outputs have a selectable crossover (HPF); off (default), 80Hz, 120Hz, or 160Hz
    • Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low and high frequency emphasis at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass and treble sound at low volume

Dual Preamp Outs: There are two sets of preamp outputs; one is front and the other is switchable between rear and subwoofer. Both are 2 volt/10 kΩ. When the subwoofer is turned on (the second preamp output is set to sub) its output level is adjustable from 0 to 15. You can select either System1 or System2 for the desired subwoofer effect.

    • Subwoofer System 1: subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting
    • Subwoofer System 2: subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting; even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Audio Mute: Activating the Audio Mute function will instantly lower the volume level by 20 dB.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

    Radio Functions

    AM/FM Tuner: The Alpine CDE-102 features a built-in AM/FM tuner.

Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically.

    Disc Playback

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps, WMA files with bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps, and AAC files with bit rates from 16 kbps to 320 kbps are supported. Variable bit rates are also compatible. Up to a maximum of 255 folders and 510 files per folder can be read from one disc. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you are playing a disc with CD Text, ID3, or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track, file, or folder by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs without CD Text, ID3 or WMA tags, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-102 no more that 35° above horizontal.

    Aux/USB/iPod Connection

Auxiliary Input: The front panel input is a 3.5mm mini-jack. You can input audio from an auxiliary source unit; such as a TV, DVD player, or portable unit. You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the front panel input; Auxiliary, TV, DVD, Portable, or Game.

This unit will recognized up to 100 folders and 100 files per folder. The headunit will play back files on a USB memory devices with the same controls and modes as playback of CDs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC audio files.

Note: The headunit's USB port does not support Apple iPod or iPhone.

iPod Full Speed Ready: You can connect your iPod or iPhone to the headunit's rear-panel proprietary iPod Full Speed port (attached to rear chassis via 4" pigtail) using the optional Alpine KCE-433iV iPod Full Speed adapter cable (500KCE433I, sold separately), and get access to all of your iPod's stored music, right from the headunit. With the optional Full Speed iPod cable you get convenient control so you can scroll through all your Playlists, Artists, Albums, and Songs; and view all your song information right from the display on the headunit. When operating your iPod through the Full Speed connection, you can use the Direct Search function in Playlist, Artist, Album, or Song mode to quickly locate your music. For especially big music libraries, Percentage Search function uses the preset buttons for quick jumps to specific parts of the list (Preset 1: 0% to 16%, Preset 2: 17% to 32%, Preset 3: 33% to 49%, Preset 4: 50% to 66%, Preset 5: 67% to 82%, Preset 6: 83% to 100% of the song library). Vast improvement over the stock radio in this 90 Miata. Got it for a great
price though Crutchfield along with all the necessary peripherals to make the
installation very easy. Easy to use, great features. Will be able to upgrade
with amps, subwoofer etc. in the future but for now works nicely with basic
    speaker system in the car.

    Well Worth the Money

Written By Como651, MidWest on Sunday, March 27, 2011

Got this on sale for $89.99 and its been worth every penny. This unit has high
pass and low pass filters which allow you to tune your audio signals to match
with your speaker frequency range for optimum sound quality. Install is easy
and this deck puts out clear sound as all Alpines do. The accessory ipod cable
must be purchased separately and is a must if you own an ipod. You can use the
USB port or the auxiliary input also but the sound quality is diminished by
around 20% or more. This does not come with a USB cord or auxiliary cable so
you must buy these separately too. Memory sticks work great with this unit.
You can copy your favorite music files and folders to a memory card and plug it
into this deck via the USB port. It instantly reads all audio files and sorts
them by folder or file which you can search with the user interface. I have not
used the blue tooth capability so can't report on it.

Nice stereo for the money. It gives good quality sound as is, but I would definitely drop
the money on the 45wx4 inline amp for it. I have this paired with some Alpine 6x9s in the
front and some JL Audio 5 1.4 in the back of my Dodge Ram 1500. The sound quality is
excellent. Can't beat it for the price.

Great stero easy installation took 45 minutes and well worth the money, the only problem i had was that it would not recognize my ipod touch when plugged into usb port but it has an aux port so you can still use your ipod just not charge. But other than that such an easy stero to operate and love how it plays burnt cds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy this well worth your money.

    Worked great at first

Written By John D, anch,ak on Wednesday, February 16, 2011

This deck worked great for over a year, then last week it started randomly resetting (or restarting, not sure what to call it). Now when I go to use it, I'll hit a button (doesn't matter which one), and the whole unit will shut off for about a second, alpine will appear on the screen, and then it will resume playing whatever it was about 2 seconds later. This continues to happen every time a button is pushed. This is extremely annoying and is definitely a problem with the unit itself, I've checked all the wiring and this problem only happens when a button is pressed; Wiggling on the faceplate doesn't do anything. I've bought alpine products for years, but am disappointed with this deck. What's more, this deck is now out of warranty (expired 2 months ago). I pulled this deck out and put back in my stock unit (lucky I kept it!) because it was so unusable like this.

    CDE-102

Written By Jay D, USA on Thursday, February 10, 2011

The CDE-102 is full of features, yet its also missing a few.

The pro's- GREAT sound quality, has aux input for a flash drive, Aux input mini-plug on the face and I-Pod control.

The con's- volume control requires too much rotation to get desired result, display doesn't show the time when the unit is OFF, time display may require several button pushes once turned on, while searching for a playlist, artist, song, etc in I-Pod mode, the display reveals only whatever txt can fit in 1 line of the display.

This unit is installed in a Jeep Cherokee and using all of the components as suggestd by Crutchfield, including the KTP-445 power amp. Still can not dim the display with the dash lights, the I-Pod does NOT charge unless the car is either running or in the key is in Aux position. The CDE-102 s not at all intuitive, even if you've owned Alpine's of past. The factory AM/FM/CD with 3 way EQ was far easier to use and of far better quality mechanically (the rotary knob on the Alpine feels like you could break it pretty easy). If you have a decent factory head unit, just keep it and upgrade the peripherals to get the desired result. The CDE-104 must be an older design for Alpine, its cheap and missing a few bells and whistles but, overall it will get the job done. At Crutchfield, you can expect to pay only slightly more than the cheapest price on the web, but customer service is the VERY BEST in this business... better than any walk-in stores !

Crutchfield made it easy! Took about 20 minutes to wire the adapters and tape it all up.
Then put the stereo in the cover plate, and took it out to the truck. Took about 5 - 10
minutes installing it, and everything worked great. It sounds good with stock speakers.
The bass treble, and other settings got it just right.

The receiver was exactly what I ordered, and was somewhat easy to install. Initially it
seemed that it would be a cinch to install the receiver, but it proved to be a rocky install
midway through. Eventually, my husband was able to come in and save the day. The
receiver is installed and works perfectly. The delivery was right on time for my husband's
birthday, and he couldn't have been more happy. Thank you Crutchfield team. You made
this purchase so easy that I really didn't have to overanalyze the purchase (which is
typical of me!). I shopped around and Crutchfield had the right price, free delivery, and
unbeatable deals on the accessories needed for this purchase.

Installed in a 2004 Ford Focus
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I've been very pleased with this player since I installed it in my '04 Ford Focus with a set of Rockford Fosgate R1682s. The ability to specify what frequency the bass and treble adjustments affect without the somewhat complicated adjustment menus I had on my old Pioneer from a few years back is pretty nice, and the radio tuner is a good step up from the factory CD player. I was surprised how much I had to turn up both my mp3 player and the receiver to get the AUX input to a good listenable level. If you are going to use a MP3 player with this unit, try to use one with a strong line out. The USB playback is quite good as well. It loads my 8GB drive in less than 5 seconds, and I've been able to use LAME encoded VBR mp3s with next to no trouble. The only reason I took a star off my rating is because of the somewhat large gap (1-2 seconds) I get when the player changes tracks/files. My computer and mp3 player do the track change seamlessly, and I was just hoping this new receiver would do the same. It's a small price to pay to be able to keep a large music selection in the car though, so it doesn't bother me too bad.

All in all, this is a great player for the guy that wants a basic receiver that just plays music and nothing else. It does that one thing, and it does it very well.

    Great Sound

Written By Edmond, Harpers Ferry West Virginia on Monday, January 31, 2011

Wonderful sound upgrade. Easier and more intuitive use than JVC's and Sony's I've
used. Only downside is it requires a proprietary Alpine cable to properly connect to the
iPod. Sounds great. Frequeny Turnover Points, band Q, and level are easy to set up
AND are individually adjustable for each source. Can't beat it for the price.

Bought this Alpine for my Saturn Ion after getting an iPod for Christmas. For the price, it can't be beat. I didn't replace the stock GM speakers in my car, but they are humming now with crystal clear sound thanks to this unit. Very easy to navigate the iPod using the stereo controls. You gotta buy the iPod cable, but that's fine. The cable is long enough to snake it wherever you want. Installation also a snap thanks to the Crutchfield instructions. Couldn't be happier with this purchase!!!

I've purchased several Alpine car receivers over the years and the CDE-102 didn't let me down. Easy to install with the instructions and sounds awesome. Setting up to use my iPod with it was easy and the controls are easy see.
