Sound Ordnance

Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Our take on the Sound Ordnance™ B-8P

by Dominic Devito

The Sound Ordnance B-8P powered bandpass sub comes ready to add some dynamic thump to your ride — just wire it up for power and secure it in your trunk or cargo area. This rugged box houses an 8" sub that delivers plenty of firepower, thanks to its polypropylene cone, treated foam surround, and stamped steel basket. The B-8P's built-in amplifier powers the sub with 80 watts RMS for surefire response, and you can use the variable low-pass filter and phase control to tune the bass barrage for your vehicle.

The handsome bandpass enclosure features 5/8" medium-density fiberboard construction for enduring strength, while a clear acrylic window lets you see the woofer in action. Inside the chamber, four LED lights provide visual enhancement to go along with your bass. The durable black carpet cover protects the B-8P and your vehicle from nicks and scrapes. And the Sound Ordnance logo gives you the added assurance of a 3-year warranty to go with your investment.

    Sound Ordnance B-8p

Written By Logan6, Orangce County, CA on Wednesday, May 15, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted some bass to round out my system in my Acura. Both high end Boston Acoustics 6x9 three way and 6.5 in the front. plus Sony head unit. The current setup sounds nice but I wanted a little bass to add to the system that doesn't take up a lot of space in the trunk. In my 40's and I don't want heavy bass like someone in their 20's. After reading some positive reviews about this Sound Ordnance B-8p, thought I would give it a try. Being an engineer by trade and have installed numerous head units and amp and subs since my teens. I'm quite capable of doing installs. But not having the right tools and time was a factor. I brought it to a professional shop to do the install costing $$. The shop tried numerous adjustments but there was only a marginal improvements to the sound. Spent another two hours making adjustments to the head unit and the sub, but no improvements, playing different types on music. Was disappointed on how lacking there was in bass. I installed a 8" Bazooka powered sub in my 2nd vehicle with almost the same setup and the Bazooka sounded a lot better. Thinking about returning this Sound Ordnance and trying something else.
    Pros:
    Nice looking enclosure.
    Cons:
Sound, not much bass or enough power for any decent bass.

What can I say? It's all true. The Amp is well matched. I was surprised by the sound this 8" speaker produced. Well worth the money. A lot of good reviews here so I'm going to keep this short.
    Pros:
Rich bass but not overpowering. On off switch for the LED lights
    Cons:
    none

    Nice boom for your buck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to add a little bass to my system and it sounds really good for what it is. I chose the b-8p because my 93 Mustang coupe has a very small trunk and I wanted something easy to remove at the track. The reviews on this was also a selling point, and they are all accurate. This is well worth the money for what you get. Very nice product. This will not beat your face in or rattle your car to pieces, but it will provide some much needed in car bass. Very pleased with this setup
    Pros:
Nice little setup for a great price. Easy installation. Surprisingly decent bass for an 8" sub.
    Cons:
The only downfall is now that my girlfriend heard this in my car now she wants me to get her one.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome system! I needed something I could take in and out fairly easy, so a powered sub seemed to be the best option. I had a Rockford 12 in my last car that hit just slightly louder than this, but the real quality of this sub is in the tone. Tons of adjustment for such a small sub, buy this now.
    Pros:
Sound quality, compact size, easy install.

Well I just put this in yesterday paired with a pioneer pdvd4100,sound ordnance p 52's components in the front and helix speakers in the back. My 09 scion tc came with a stock sub but after changing my hu I didn't really have full control over and I just recently decided to upgrade my cars stereo . I got the speakers then an alpine Mrp-f300 to power them wow big difference. I was still a little unhappy with the low end tho so I started looki g into subwoofers but didnt want to spend to much I came across this and the reviews were great so I said ill give it a shot. Didnt take me long to install since I ran an extra set of rca cables when I installed my amp used a distributor block to run this and my amp. This thing sound much better than I thought I think u get much better performance if your hu has dedicated subwoofer rca outputs. This thing thumps I listen to mostly rock type music and wasn't sure if the box type would hit the kick drum like I wanted we'll it does so I don't need to worry about that any more and I play some rap once in awhile and it hits hard try playing black eyed peas boom boom pow I hate the song but its a good bass to test this bad boy out. So as of 2 days I'm Very happy thAnk you crutchfield
    Pros:
Good bass .good price ,good look
    Cons:
    None so far

Excellent for Rounding out the Sound

Written By GCH, Leesburg, VA on Saturday, April 06, 2013

I've never had a decent car audio system, but a friend turned me on to Crutchfield when the factory HU in my 02 Protege failed. The master sheet and tools made it so easy to replace, I went on to replace the front speakers with a Crutchfield recommendation, then the back ones as well. Still lacking bass, I started looking at subs. I didn't want to spend a lot. I ruled out the MTX small sub because it has no grill and I have to put stuff in my trunk. The cone is stiff enough, but I worried about tearing the surround. The small B-8PT got good reviews, but one reviewer said "not as much punch as the B-8P." Since the footprint is about the same, and since the bandpass SW is a little cheaper, I decided to go with it, knowing if it didn't work for me I could return it. Still tweaking it, but very happy with it. The SW allows you to get more bass with less volume. If you are into rap, or like to play music so your ears are ringing when you get out of the car, this won't do it for you. But classic rock and jazz (e.g. Boston, Kansas, Sade, Steely Dan, Yes, Yellow Jackets, etc.) played at comfortable level, it really fills out the LF and has nice, tight, punchy sound. Adds a lot of clarity to bass lines, bass and lower drums. I'm very happy with it. Thanks, Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Aesthetically pleasing overall. Carpeted is glued down nicely, and the embroidered (not painted) "Sound Ordnance" symbol looks classy. Fits in the trunk without taking up all the space,. Fills out missing LF for music at moderate levels (I don't turn the volume much above 22 out of 35 max).
    Cons:
Some screws are driven in a bit crooked, evidence of hasty assembly (which probably helps keep the cost down) - not a big deal since it's hidden from view & you have to look closely to see. The connection slots are a bit narrow for spade clips for 8-10 AWG wire (which is what Crutchfield recommends for this Sub), & I had to use a grinding wheel to narrow them before attaching them to the wire so they would fit the slots - not a big deal if you have grinding wheel, but spades won't fit w/o mod.

    Great Sub for the Money

Written By Seaira, Oregon on Thursday, April 04, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sub for the money. Those who said they couldn't even tell if it was on must not know how to set it up correctly. This thing will NOT rattle your windows, but for those looking for some low end to round out the sound in their car, it's well worth it.
    Pros:
    Price, Value. Sound
    Cons:
My only complaint is that the dimensions weren't quite accurate on Crutchfield.com, and it wouldn't fit under the seat like I was hoping (Van), but it's in the back and it sounds great.

Incredible bass for only 80 watts

Written By Cadster007, Morgantown, WV on Monday, March 11, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been dragging around a large speaker box with two Pyle driver pros from 1989 and a 200 watt amp. This thing has more bass than my old setup. Plus the amp is built in so no need for separate amp. I currently have a 2010 Subaru outback sport and it only takes up a quarter of my hatchback space. Great sub for a small hatch back car with limited space. Don't get me wrong, this is not equivalent to 1000 watt amp sound, but I personally don't like my stomached rattled by bass. It does make my hair move at times, but won't make you sick. :)
    Pros:
Unbelievable bass sound from only 80 watts at a great price. Very compact. Built in amp, no need for two things taking up space.
    Cons:
    Don't really have any!

    Perfect

Written By Bdsn, Anchorage, AK on Thursday, March 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds just like my old Rockford Fosgate Punch 8" in a plexiglass box, but for significantly cheaper. It is exactly what I was looking for. Inside the Trailblazer, the bass is solid, clean and booming - but it doesn't carry far. From outside the vehicle you can't really hear it, so it is stealthy. I'm glad I gave this brand a chance, I almost didn't.
    Pros:
Cheap as hell, great sound, would compare it to Rockford Fosgate. Sorry RF, think I found a new brand. Quiet from outside the vehicle, nobody is going to follow you home to gank it if you keep your windows up.
    Cons:
    none.

Breaking News - Old Guy Learns New Trick.

Written By ronzo, Montpelier, VA on Wednesday, February 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I always thought subs were kind of obnoxious and would be overkill for my musical tastes, but after reading the rave reviews here from more than a few subwoofer newbies, I decided to give it a whirl. I am soooo glad I did. This thing sounds fantastic - my music is so much more alive and I hear things in old songs I never heard before. My musically taste is evolving because of this thing! I'm not a Rap guy, but I do really like is how it sounds with my Pandora "Chill" station...the bass lines from Thievery Corporation are unbelievable. Not only that, but I think my hair may be getting darker too... Unfortunately, the sub had a wiring issue and would pop consistently on power up - confirmed to be defective after a little diagnostic help from Crutchfield. Three days later....a new sub was at my doorstep. Unbelievable! THE ONLY THING BETTER THAN THIS SUB IS CRUTCHFIELD'S CUSTOMER SERVICE...BUY CRUTCHFIELD - BE HAPPY!! Thank you guys!!!
    Pros:
incredible sound, fairly compact, reverses the aging process, fantastic product with an even better company behind it
    Cons:
    seriously?

Not too big and doesn't take up much space but the bass is more than you would expect for a box this size. Perfect to add more than a little bass to a factory radio. Fits and sounds just right in my nissan rogue with factory speakers.
    Pros:
Cool looking with blue leds. Very good bass sound and doesn't take up much space compared to other subs.

Finally! Heavy bass with being obnoxious!

Written By Mr.BassMan, Englehood, FL on Friday, January 18, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If your are like me and have wanted some heavy bass without being one of those dudes with a massive 1000 watt system, this is for you. It's a powered sub which means the speaker and amplifier have been paired to match and perform perfectly and efficiently together. Very simple. Buy this and a wiring kit and you are set.
    Pros:
Heavy bass response, well made porting and cabinet, beautiful acrylic cover the protect speaker as well as lights which illuminate the cabinet wonderfully. Very simple set up with and awesome price tag.
    Cons:
It has a cabinet so it takes a slightly more space than a flat sub that goes under the seat, but still, very small compared to most cabinets
