Sennheiser

Our take on the Sennheiser HD 448

by Kristen Schaub

Enjoy crystal-clear music and movie soundtracks with Sennheiser's HD 448 headphones. They boast smart technologies that give you better sound. For example, every pair of headphones has to transform the electrical signal coming through the headphone cord into sound. But Sennheiser uses specially tuned parts that really excel in that arena — you'll hear consistently clean, lifelike audio, from the high notes in a guitar solo to the deep bass of an explosion.

The leatherette earpads fit around the ear, and block out ambient noise so you can focus better on your music. An ergonomic, padded headband makes these 'phones ideal for long hours of comfortable music listening. They also come with a detachable, single-sided cord, along with an extension cable, so you can choose the length that best suits your activity. Use the included carrying pouch to store the HD 448s when not in use.

From the review Sennheiser HD 448 Stereo Headphones: A relaxing respite within the workday

"[The Sennheiser HD 448's] are a choice, mid-priced headphone value. The sound quality is commendable. They are comfortable, block out noise, and make an outstanding set of phones to wear at the office and disappear in. The Sennheiser HD 448 headphones deserve to go with you to the office or wherever you like to take a time out or simply lay down a soundtrack to your life."

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pros: I bought these because I wanted something that was closed, as opposed to the 595's (open) I own . When I first received them I was a bit baffled by the light weight construction. But figured out these are more for portability (package states they are Ipod compatible) Non the less, they sound really good out of the box. I imagine after "burn in" they will sound better I use them with a matrix cube DAC. They do have bass, but it's not overbearing, overall sound is closer to "neutral".

Cons: My only complaint was the point on construction for portability. the cable is pretty thin, and the headband is probably 99% lightweight plastic. the other 1% goes to the metal screws holding them together.

    Sennheiser HD 448

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently upgraded to these from a pair of JVC noise-cancelling on-the-ear headphones in the same price range, and am most impressed. I think it would be fair to say that this pair, even without the noise-cancelling abilities of the JVCs, blocks out as much ambient noise as they did.

The sound quality in comparison to the JVCs I owned is most definitely an improvement. I'm hearing some of the more subtle parts of songs that I hadn't heard before, and in general, these sound much less tinny and have stronger bass.

The fact that they are the over-the-ear style can be a bit problematic if you wear headphones a lot and have big ears, as I do. I can generally go about 3 hours with them on before they get uncomfortable, so not too bad.

I had also considered buying the Sennheiser 438s, as they were cheaper and the specs were just slightly lower, but they had those rim-looking dealies on the sides and I just couldn't imagine walking around with those on. So for me, it was worth a bit extra to get the slightly higher frequency response, sensitivity, and less flashy design.

For the price, a very nice set of headphones overall.

    Excellent for the Price

Written By Michael C, Chicago, IL on Friday, December 31, 2010

If you are looking for excellent audio quality for the price, it would be hard to top the 448
from Sennheiser. The mids are excellent right out of the box and the highs go from good
to excellent after about 50 hours of burn-in. The base is very clear without being
overpowering and also benefit from burn-in time. Keep in mind that these headphones
have a pretty flat response, meaning the music from these cans is meant to sound as
close as possible to what the artist intended. This is good for some, but many may want
a stronger level bass in their headphones than what the 448 produces. If you like jaw-
dropping bass, these headphones aren't for you. As for listening comfort, these
headphones are some of the lightest full-size cans I've ever worn. After a few minutes of
listening to music, I often forget that there is a pair of headphones on my head. I can
listen comfortably for hours. Along with comfort, the extension cable makes these
headphones suitable for nearly any use, including mp3 players. Overall, I strongly
recommend the Sennheiser HD 448 for anyone wanting excellent headphones on a
    budget.

I really like these phones. They are light in weight and very comfortable. The sound is fairly neutral with a bit of low end punch but definitely not too much.
