Sound Ordnance

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Sound Ordnance M-2250

by Buck Pomerantz

Win the battle for great sound in your ride. Sound Ordnance amplifiers feature tough construction, rugged looks, and a 3-year warranty, so you can enjoy the full power of your music for the long haul. Even better, you can add Sound Ordnance to your arsenal at a surprisingly affordable price.

The Sound Ordnance M-2250 2-channel amplifier deploys 175 watts RMS to each channel, giving your music plenty of firepower. Or you can bridge the M-2250 to mobilize 500 watts RMS to your sub. An adjustable high-pass filter makes sure your full-range speakers operate within their optimum range and give you the best tone possible. If you're driving a sub, the variable bass boost and low-pass filter allow you to control your bass barrage at will.

The M-2250 amplifier uses sophisticated power supply and output technologies to ensure clean amplification from the inputs all the way to your speakers. Special circuits protect the amp from overheating and short circuits, and a turn-on delay virtually eliminates that annoying thump when you crank up your system.

Although this amplifier has a port for a remote control built in, it's not functional, and a remote controller for this amp is not available.

The amp can also be bridged into a 4-ohm load for a power rating of 500 watts. Power ratings are measured with an input power of 14.4 volts.

Crossovers: The M-2250 is equipped with both high-pass and low-pass crossovers. You can set the low-pass and high-pass cutoff frequencies independently between 40Hz and 300Hz. A 3-way switch lets you select low-pass, high-pass, or full range operation. The crossovers have a 12dB per octave slope.

Bass Boost: The amplifier has a bass boost control (labeled Bass EQ on the amp), centered at 45 Hz and continuously variable from 0dB to +12dB.

Mode Switch: You can easily switch between stereo and mono operation with the 2-way Mode Switch.

LED Indicators: The M-2250 features two LED indicators: a green LED that illuminates when the amp is powered on, and a red LED that illuminates when the amplifier is in protect mode due to overheating or a short circuit in the speaker wire.

    Connections

Removable End Caps: The end caps on the M-2250 are removable with a 3mm Allen wrench (not supplied) to make it easier to attach the power and speaker wires.

Power Connections: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. (Due to the fuse rating of the amp, 8-gauge power and ground wire are recommended.) The remote turn-on terminal is a set screw terminal that will accept up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The speaker connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

RCA Inputs and Outputs: The amplifier features a pair of stereo RCA inputs for connecting your head unit. There is also a pair of stereo RCA outputs for feeding the preamp signal to another amplifier, if needed.

Fuses: The M-2250 features two 25-amp ATC blade fuses.

Remote: Although there is an RJ-45 port on the amp labeled Remote, the port is not functional and no wired remote is available.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Serves its purpose 100% and delivers clean unadulterated signal without power-drain when used properly with a 1.0 MicroFarad capacitor. 5 stars.
    Pros:
Easy install, affordable, sleek and slim, serves its purpose perfectly.
    Cons:
BIG DEAL HERE: Factory in-the-box comes with the bass boost already at +12db!! TURN THIS OFF before install, you have the immediate potential to damage your output audio equipment.

Unfortunately didn't even have enough power to push my 2 12 Inch infinities subs.had to return. bought a Kenwood amp instead, satisfied to say the least.
    Cons:
Not much power. Connectors are plastic. Vents Are On Bottom Of Amp.

    So much power!

Written By Proboscis, Henning, TN on Wednesday, April 03, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought one that was scratch and dent. You can not beat the price for this powerhouse! I have one Memphis 12 in a sealed box in the trunk of my Infiniti. With the gain halfway, the bass is deep and smooth with the sub flexing hard. I smell sawdust sometimes after listening to rap. Lol!
    Pros:
Lots of power and a 3 year warranty
    Cons:
I wish the RCA hookup was on the same side as the power hookup. And the amp is rather large.

Worth it without a doubt so far...

Written By p, PA on Wednesday, January 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just finished installing this about a week ago - it's currently powering a pair of image dynamics chameleon components rated at 125rms a piece- it sounds marvelous with the gain not even half way up. I have absolutely no complaints regarding quality or anything like that. I just hope the amp lasts a long time.
    Pros:
Great sound, cheap price (I got it when it was on sale for 100 bucks), the terminals use philips set style screws so you dont need to go searching through your allen key collection to find the "right" size.
    Cons:
the only complain I have- is that I had to remove the shiny plastic end pieces because of my particular mounting set up- I couldn't get at any of the terminals while they were on there, so I had to wire up the whole amp before I could mount it... wasn't that bad, just thought i might be worth mentioning if you have spatial constraints regarding its mount set up and whatnot...

this amp rocks! from the moment i opened the package i was impressed , the price is excellent for the quality of the amp, the desighn of the packaging n thoroughness of the manual n related items tells me theres been some actually investment in R&D, im using it bridged in mono and the amp has plenty of power and actually more than i need for my 1 12" sub ,. really brought out the impact of the sub to my system and im very happy with the amp.
    Pros:
plenty of power, flexibility control options, crossover, bridgeable etc...
    Cons:
the mounting tabs are a little weak, but if you take youre time and properly install the amp i dont see a problem.

    Solid built powerful amp

Written By James, Grand Blanc, MI on Friday, March 30, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp packs a punch when bridged. I have it hooked up to the B-24 subs and they sound more powerful now. I was using a 500watt mono amp for them, but it only put out 150watts at 4 ohm. I had it tuned (m-2250) perfectly in less than 5 minutes.
    Pros:
powerful when bridged for 500 watts
    Cons:
the plastic screws for the adjustments (ie: gain, lpf, hpf) are a soft plastic and strip easily, so make sure to use a proper sized philips tip screwdriver

Replaced Alpine m500 & Alpine 10" Type R with the SO B-24 box & the SO 2250 amp and all I can say is WOW.. The bass is amazing.. This thing booms and the speakers aren't even moving.. The box fits perfect in my 2010 Nissan Altima Sedan's trunk like it was made for it. Product quality is superb in my opinion... Oh and my head unit is a Sony XAV 72BT. I was a little unhappy reguarding the amp, came dented and scratched but still works...

    great amp for the price

Written By jdep, ohio on Friday, June 24, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp is very solid, and well built. powered right up with no problems. definatly puts out the advertised power. Amp gets pretty warm during solid use, but not alarmingly hot. be sure to put in an open area if not a ventilated one. bass boost is nice, not a locked in 6 or 12 dbs, fully adjustable with a screw identical to gain or crossover adjustments. end caps ARE plastic, coated with chrome, be careful securing it down. hookup was easy and staight forward. all in all a very solid purchase at a good price.

I was looking for a decently priced amp that gave enough juice to get two 12s
thumping. I'm currently running this amp, non-bridged, and it gives an
incredible amount of bass out of the two subs. Will probably buy a second one
soon. Great buy if you're not looking to break the bank for good sub-power.

Bought this in January, with the free wiring kit it came with. Install was easy,
and the controls on it are simple. It's powering my Rockford Fosgate P2L 212s,
and it makes them sound fantastic. Lots of power for not a lot of price. There's
no remote for it, even though it has a spot to put one; Not enough to mark this
down a star. Sold out 4 days after I bought it, speaks for itself.

    Clean power

Written By Will, Savannah, Ga on Wednesday, December 08, 2010

I have this powering my Sound Ordnance B-24 the amp gets the job done with ease. There
are however three issues that made me go 4 stars instead of 5.
1st as mentioned before the end are plastic ( cosmetic )
2nd There are vents on the bottom of the amp and when it is mounted blocking these vents it
seems to get very warm. Once I mounted it with air flow pass both top and bottom of the amp
    it runs cool.
3rd There is a place for a remote although Crutchfield does not carry one for it.

    Good Value

Written By Deggy, Madison, WI on Tuesday, November 23, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the M-2250 for 3 months now. I have it bridged to run 500w rms @ 4ohm. It
is hooked up to the SO B-24 2-12" bandpass box. HOLY CRAP! A Very nice combo.

    - Lots of power for the price.
    - Love the look of it.
    - Good screw-clamping connectors for power wires.
    - I have not yet experienced clipping at high volume. (But I'll keep trying!)
    - I like the little Sound Ordnance dog tags that they send with it.
    - At normal volume levels, the amp does not get hot, yet still provides good bass.
    - After pushing it really hard for 30 minutes, the amp was quite warm. It didn't 'burn' my
hand, but I wouldnt want to hold it there for very long.
    - When really pushing it, it makes my lights dim a little, which is to be expected with AB
class amps. Time to get a capacitor.
    - Others have commented on the plastic end caps? Well, I'm pretty sure they are metal,
cuz when I was screwing in the power cables, I touched the end cap and it arced n
    sparked, so be careful.
    - The amp seems to have a spot to plug in a remote bass boost control, yet Crutchfield
Advisor say there is not one compatible with it.

Overall, the value for the price is excellent, hence the 5 star rating. If it cost over $300
like many 'name brand' amps with similar stats do, I may rate it slightly lower. The 3 year
warranty is what sealed the deal for me. Despite the minor low points, I love this amp
and would recommend it to anyone that wants high power rating for a low price.
