Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the JVC KD-X40

by Zak Billmeier

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

CDs — who needs 'em?
Got all your tunes on an iPod®, iPhone®, or another player? JVC designed the KD-X40 digital media receiver to get the most out of your digital music collection. It doesn't play CDs, but in your car, it doesn't need to.

Do more with your USB connection
JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep a smartphone charged while it's performing many battery-draining tasks at once. And with your smartphone connected, you can listen to your phone's internal memory as one source and access the little microSD card as another.

Of course, you can still play your iPod like before. Just connect your player to a USB slot and you're good to go. You can dive into your music library using the KD-X40's controls, and enjoy better sound quality than you get with an auxiliary input connection. With your iPhone connected, you can also stream PANDORA® Internet Radio through a free iPhone app.

Separated Variable Color display
The KD-X40 features a super cool display that lets you change the colors on the controls independent from those on the screen — with over 30,000 possible shades per side. You can match your receiver to your dash, support your favorite team, or just make a statement.

Expansion possibilities
It's always good to keep your options open, and this JVC is ready when you want to expand your system. You can talk hands-free on your compatible phone with the help of JVC's Bluetooth® adapter (not included). You'll find that the two sets of preamp outputs make it easier to add and control amps and subs, plus you can switch one set over to subwoofer mode and adjust your bass on the fly. You'll also get two auxiliary inputs for hooking up more gear, like a Dock & Play satellite radio.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod note:
If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Overview: The JVC KD-X40 is a digital media receiver which supports a variety of audio sources such as the Apple iPod and iPhone, USB memory devices loaded with MP3/WMA music, and almost any portable audio player via the unit's dual auxiliary inputs. The JVC digital media receiver also offers a built-in AM/FM tuner and supports Pandora Internet Radio (via iPhone) so you can listen to your favorite radio stations and online music. In addition, the JVC KD-X40 supports Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth hands-free communication via optional adapter (sold separately). The KD-X40 comes with an IR wireless remote control and supports steering wheel remote control (via optional adapter, sold separately).

Note: The JVC KD-X40 digital media receiver does not feature a CD mechanism and does not support CD-changer controls.

      Front-Panel USB Port

USB 2.0 Port: The JVC KD-X40 features a front-panel USB 2.0 (type-A) port behind a sliding cover for connection of a USB mass-storage class device. The USB port enables audio playback and control of MP3/WMA audio files stored on a USB (MSC) device.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

Playable Files: The JVC KD-X40 supports the following types of MP3/WMA files loaded onto a USB mass storage class device. The USB device must be formatted in FAT 12/16/32. The digital media receiver can support up to a total of 65,025 files, 255 folders, and 255 filer per folder.

File Type File Extension Bit Rate Sampling Frequency Tags
      MP3 .mp3 8-320 kbps 8, 11.025, 12, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 kHz ID3 tag (version 1.0/1.1/2.2/2.3/2.4)
WMA .wma 32-192 kbps 32, 44.1, 48 kHz WMA tag

ID3/WMA Tags: The unit also supports ID3 and WMA tags for display of album and artist information. The unit can display up to 60 characters.

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a connected USB memory device, so you can easily access your music.

Playback Modes: In addition to Normal playback, you can select from Repeat and Random playback modes.

      • Repeat: Repeat current track or current folder.
      • Random: Randomly play all tracks from a current folder, or all tracks on the USB (MSC) device.

USB Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected USB mass storage class device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position.

      iPod Control w/ Pandora

iPod/iPhone Direct: The JVC KD-X40's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. An additional iPod cable is available (469USBPOD, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit.

iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 80dB. The JVC head unit supports audio playback of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the JVC head unit's front-panel controls, from its clickwheel/touchscreen, or via a streamed app from your iPhone.

      • Head Unit: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. Once a Playlist or Category is selected, the content is listed in alphabetical order. The KD-X40 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.
      • iPod: You can choose to navigate your iPod or iPhone's stored music from its clickwheel or touchscreen, like you are accustomed to during normal usage.
      • External (App Mode): External Mode lets you enjoy audio content from your downloaded music Apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) and driver assistant Apps (such as Trapster) streamed to your Apple iPhone, through the JVC KD-X40. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate and view your apps; the head unit will only display the clock and "EXT Mode".

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded application will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the JVC KD-X40 using your connected Apple iPhone, via the USB/iPod connector cable (included with your iPhone). The JVC KD-X40 provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list; you can sort the station list by date or A-Z. You can also skip song tracks within a station. In addition, you can also give songs a thumbs up/down and bookmark songs/artists. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

iPod Display: The KD-X40 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, when in Head Unit and iPod mode (not in External mode), or listening to Pandora Internet Radio. The head unit can display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label.

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

      Dual Auxiliary Inputs

Dual Auxiliary Inputs: A front-panel & rear-panel stereo minijack are provided to allow the connection of portable audio sources. Simply connect your portable digital music player to either the unit's front or rear auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

Simultaneous Connection: The front-panel & rear-panel auxiliary connections are separate (independent) inputs, so you can connect two portable audio devices at once to the JVC head unit and select between sources. You can turn the front- and rear-panel auxiliary inputs On or Off.

      Optional Bluetooth

Optional Bluetooth: The unit's rear-panel auxiliary input can also be used to connect JVC's KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSBTA10, sold separately). The KS-BTA100 must be plugged into the rear-panel auxiliary input, and not the front-panel auxiliary input. The front-panel auxiliary input does not support Bluetooth. The KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player. The optional JVC Bluetooth Adapter includes a super-sensitive microphone, an Answer/End button, and playback controls. The KD-X40 can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers.

Note: Not all Bluetooth devices will be compatible. Visit the JVC Mobile Entertainment Bluetooth Support Page for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

      AM/FM Tuner

AM/FM Tuner: The JVC KD-X40 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically.

Radio Timer: You can tune into a preset station at a specific time regardless of the head unit's current source. You can activate the Radio Timer once, daily, or turn it completely off.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Mono: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

      Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-X40 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-X40 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-X40 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-X40 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-X40 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-X40 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

      Pro EQ
      Frequency Level Q
      Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
      Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
      Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Source Link EQ: This feature allows you to store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

2.5V/4CH Preamp Output: The KD-X40 is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between 0 to 8 (separate from the main volume level). You can also adjust the low-pass filter and activate a high-pass filter.

      • Low-Pass Filter: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz.
      • High-Pass Filter: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can also activate a high-pass filter (fixed at low-pass filter frequency) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Display Features

Variable Color LCD & Key Illumination: The JVC KD-X40 features 29 color presets for the LCD and button illumination. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color preset or custom color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons. You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD and button illumination.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

Mounting Angle: For proper operation, you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-X40 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Excelent head unit. nothing wrong yet!

Written By mattintc, boyne city on Thursday, March 14, 2013

Well to start off the people that got mad because it was to complex for them or the lights where to flashy apparently has never owned a JVC before. This is a unit that is hard to get used to but after you get past that its amazing! i cant imagine screwing with a USB stick. Id much rather stick to an ancient ipod since it still works. But with this head unit i noticed that it is much like my other JVC head unit which i absolutely love!
      Pros:
It has many many features and sounds pretty good for such a cheap head unit
      Cons:
      Maybe the complexity of it.

Replaced an old Clarion deck in my off road truck. Thing I like about it is, one its inexpensive for what you get, second, I like there is no CD player. Who uses CD's anymore, and this is an off road truck, I dont want the cd skipping every time I hit something on the trail.
      Pros:
Sound great matched with after market speakers, even made stock speakers sound better. There is no faceplate. sounds like it should be a con right? I say no, for one who takes their faceplate off after the first few weeks, the other reason I say its a pro: when off-roading, the one on my Clarion would vibrate its way open and eventually it broke off. It would fall off unless I was on smooth pavement.
      Cons:
The capacity of the thumb drive you can use could be higher. The remote is tiny, i can see losing it easy. Its about the size of your key fob. but not practical to use on a key ring. Another line on the display would be nice too.

Excellent radio for the price. The operation can get a bit tricky with the usb aux connection. Overall an excellent system for the price. Very pleased with the purchase
      Pros:
Great sound, built in amp sounds like it's very well built.

      Affordable, but disappointing iPhone integration

Written By JAG, Fairfax, VA on Wednesday, November 28, 2012

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this as a replacement to my factory radio after my last iphone adapter broke. The display is OK, although the interface leaves something to be desired. The menu options aren't very intuitive, nor is the ability to switch between various sources. The look is fine, and it's nice to be able to change the color scheme to match my car, both for day and night views.

My biggest gripe is the iphone integration. It's extremely disappointing. When you plug in your iPhone, it immediately starts playing the first song (alphabetically) on your device. Even if you were listening to something else recently (or listening to music from another app), it instantly starts playing when you plug it in. I contacted JVC and they say there's no way to change this, so you're stuck with the stereo blasting out whatever is at the top of your itunes. Really a shame.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just what I wanted, No CD, No tape, just a radios, a USB and a front and back auxillary ports (there is more in the back). The sound is good, the signals are strong, much better than the factory unit. Just what I was looking for and at a good price. The special came with the installation kit at no extra cost. This unit was not listed as a fit for my car as it did not meet the clearance criteria of the Crutchfield engineers, An advisor suggested it when I said that the fit units were above my price points or were not getting good ratings, This lengthened my search.
      Pros:
Just what I was looking for with an installation kit to boot.
      Cons:
      None with this unit.

Since I so not have a vehicle with a sync system this is the best thing. I love having the remote too. So easy to just push the buttons and keep my eyes on the road.
      Cons:
Only con is that you really can not just select the artist you want using the usb but if you have the ipod hooked up that is taken care of.

I bought a 32gb usb stick to use with this unit. The unit can only see 255 songs in a directory, so I had to create about 25 subdirectories on my usb stick and divide my library between them all. That was a bit of a chore.
      Pros:
      Works great w/ my Ipod.
      Cons:
Needed to use an interface box to make it work w/ my steering wheel controls

      So So

Written By Dave, Florida on Thursday, October 25, 2012

Was purchased to replace an aging eight year old Pioneer unit.

When using a thumb drive the folder up down buttons work in reverse - pressing the down arrow button goes up in the folder tree, while pressing the up arrow button goes down in the folder tree. A reset of the unit did not change this behavior.

Scroll feature - when placed in Scroll Auto mode - the ID3 tags are supposed to scroll every five seconds - well they do and they don't. They will scroll if you have the Display set to show a tag, but if you have the display to show either the clock or the elasped time of the track - it only scrolls once and then goes to the time display.

ID3 Tags - It only shows the Album, Artist and song title, no other tags. I would have liked it to have a menu and allow me to pick and choose what tags to display along with file and folder names as well. The old Pioneer showed more.

Since it is a digital media player I would have thought it should behave like most personal MP3 players when using a thumb drive. But it doesn't.

Will not allow you to pick a genre, playlist, artist, albums, or songs. Yes you can scroll through the folders on the thumb drive - attempting to find what you want - but if you are using a 16gig thumb drive it will take some time. Though you really should be watching the road.

Only supports WMA and MP3 formats on the thumb drive. If you like WAV, FLAC or OGG format - sorry they won't play.

      (continued in pros and cons)
      Pros:
I understand it takes time to build the database (my mp3 players anyway) and that may be why JVC chose not to have this unit behave like an mp3 player. Though they could have set the unit to begin playing a song from the thumb drive while the database was being created. If you only intend to use it with your mp3 player then it will probably be OK for you. Otherwise pay closer attention to what the manual has to say.

This unit was just what i was looking for. I needed a stereo that would play my Ipod and charge it at the same time and I found it. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now and no problems. If you are looking for an inexpensive upgrade to your factory stereo this is the one, it works great and installed easy. I installed it into my F-150 in about 45 minutes and my next upgrade will be my door speakers, cant wait for that. Thank you Crutchfield for throwing in the mounting kit and wiring harness.

The JVC KD-X40 is an all-in-one media center with everything you need to keep the party moving down the road. The usb feature alone was the factor that sold me on this unit but when I discovered that it had rca outputs, sound EQ, ipod display and controls, and a light price tag I just knew that this unit was the one for me. Look no further....Buy the JVC KD-X40. You will not be disappointed.
      Pros:
IPOD display and controls, RCA output connections for adding additional amps, sound EQ, plenty of power, various color display configurations, and lots lots more.
      Cons:
      none.

For the price its not too bad but you get what you pay for. The EQ isnt very easy to use, you can set a custome preset EQ but you cant just adjust it on the fly...you have to go adjust your custom preset EQ or use one of the build in EQ settings like "Base", "vocal" "flat" etc.. You also cant adjust the speaker output from Left to right or front to back which I need for my kids (in our van). The USB input is good for ipods and iphones but it doesnt work with my Android phone so I need to connect it to the Auxiliary input. If you use Pandora it is ok but you cant thumbs up or thumbs down a song, just skip and pause/play. The install was easy in my 2000 Honda Odyssey, took about 1hr with the install kit from crutchfield. I do wish I spent about $20 or $30 more for a little better deck...this deck is sleek but sacrifices some functionality.
      Pros:
      Cheap, sleek, basic
      Cons:
Too basic, too sleek with a sacrifice of needed buttons and

I honestly cant remember the last time I purchased a CD. The deck was a perfect replacement from the factory deck in my Jeep. Easy instalation. A little disappointed in the remote. Doesnt give you full control. I did have to read the owners manual once to figure it all out, but that's why it came with one! Plenty of imputs. Built in high/low pass filter if you add a sub. If only the face detached!!! Then again, if someone steals it, I'm only out this much.

Plays all my mp3s on a usb drive. No more cds! Variable colors that can be adjusted for day and night use. I just let the colors change by themselves instead of setting it to one color. It's like having a nightclub in my car lol. Read the manual so you know how to preset the radio stations. You'll be confused if you don't. Other than that I recommend this digital media receiver.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really enjoy this radio I have it for my 93 honda accord ex. It was hard finally figuring out what my issue was by first taking out my stock radio but after that it was great. I hooked this up to my two 12' dual subs and 3000 watt amp. The color changing gets everyone's attention in the car first and then when you set your ipod on with some subs on. Just amazing, I get a lot of compliments with this. It came with installing guide and kit for free so that was a BIG bonus. Crutchfield is where to go I had an issue with my order (ship me wrong install guide kit) No big deal it only took 2 days to get here and since then I've been jamming out. I love having a eye turner, I recommend it unless your going for 3 aux plug ins (red and white ports) Other then that its overall a good radio my money well spent and coming to Crutchfield if I am in need of anything else. A+++++++++++
      Pros:
Loaded with controls, view of it is just solid without it hooked up. Ability to have a solid color or a flow of all the colors is great. (About 40 different colors so your set) Easy hook up and the remote comes with so defeats anybody touching the radio or avoid switching channels while driving.
      Cons:
A better menu display kinda gets annoying going back and forth after changing something just to experiment it. Not a big issue!
