Klipsch

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the Klipsch Reference RB-61 II

by Kristen Schaub

No room for towers? These bookshelf speakers pack a punch.

Klipsch® designed their impressive RB-61 IIs to deliver the same kind of thrills and intensity as their larger tower speakers — you'll be amazed at the kind of sound these put out. Building on Klipsch's previous Reference speaker line, the Series II models have updated drivers and a new crossover system for even more spacious sound. These bookshelf speakers work equally well as a stereo pair for music listening or as the front left and right speakers in your home theater system.

Horn technology for "front row" sound

All Reference Series II speakers feature a redesigned version of Klipsch's famous horn-loaded tweeter. Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them right toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeter inside a flared opening, known as a "horn," which disperses the highs evenly across your listening area in a 90°-wide, 60°-high pattern. With their Series II speakers, Klipsch has redesigned the shape and slope of their famous horn enclosure, so your movie soundtracks and music will sound more "open," with improved dynamics and efficiency. All in all, you can count on powerful, "front row" sound that's crystal-clear at all volume levels.

Cabinet construction

High-tech driver design

The RB-61 IIs also use newly machined, light-yet-rigid Cerametallic woofers with a folded edge to produce smoother mids and tighter bass. The specially treated aluminum in the cones helps to dampen unwanted vibrations and distortion, while an integrated dustcap gives them a cleaner look and adds stability. Dual five-way binding posts let you bi-amp or bi-wire these speakers for even better performance. And the rigid, braced cabinets come in a handsome woodgrain vinyl finish.

Check out the rest of our Klipsch lineup, and build a complete Reference Series II home theater or stereo speaker system. And don't forget to add a Klipsch subwoofer for high-impact bass.

    Driver Technology

Highly-Efficient Design: The Klipsch RB-61 II utilizes a highly efficient design to produce more output using less power & energy for louder sound with less distortion. The RB-61 II is able to fill medium-sized rooms with outstanding, accurate, non-fatiguing sound that you can listen to for hours.

Tractrix Horn Tweeter: Each Klipsch RB-61 II features a professional-grade 1.0-inch titanium-diaphragm compression driver inside a square Tractrix Horn for smoother high-end response with greater extension, enhanced imaging, and more powerful dynamics. The Tractrix Horns deliver a 90-degree wide by 60-degree high dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. Behind each horn lies a 1.0-inch titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound.

Cerametallic Woofer: The 6.5-inch woofer of the RB-61 II features Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic cones. Made with an anodized aluminum, these cones are strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts their inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The 6.5-inch woofer also employs a rubber surround for added durability.

Crossover Network: For signal purity and perfect driver integration, the crossover on the RB-61 II features the finest components and Klipsch custom internal wiring.

    Enclosure Design

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The dual 6.5-inch Cerametallic cone woofer and 1.0" titanium diaphragm compression driver are mounted in a bass reflex enclosure which features a single front-firing port. The RB-61 II's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound and a front-firing port to eliminate turbulence noise. A black metallic finished baffle around the horn mouth and woofer dramatically improve acoustics across the sonic range. The bass reflex enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with either a Black Ash or Cherry wood-grain vinyl veneer.

Magnetic Grille: The bookshelf loudspeaker features a removable magnetic grille which easily snaps into place over its cast-aluminum front baffle. The speaker can be used with or without its grille in place.

    Connections

Dual Binding Posts: Each speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.

    Mounting Options

Rubber Feet: Each bookshelf speaker comes supplied with eight self-adhesive rubber feet (4 for each speaker) so you can sit the speakers on a stand or shelf securely. The rubber feet add approximately 0.3125" to the height of each speaker.

Placement: The Reference Series bookshelf loudspeakers are designed to perform well in a wide variety of locations but you will get the most out of the speakers by following these simple guidelines.

    • Place the front left and right speakers on shelves or stands with their tweeters at approximately ear height for a seated listener. When used surround sound speakers, they normally perform best when placed slightly higher than ear level.
    • The bookshelf loudspeakers should be equal distance from the floor and the wall behind them. It can also helps to have the left and right speakers at different distances from their nearest side walls. This sort of staggering helps smooth the bass range.

    Great but Needs Quality Electronics

Written By jukeboxtheater, Atlanta, GA on Sunday, May 19, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First let me say that these were purchased in the Crutchfield Outlet store from their "scratch and dent" inventory. Now I'm pretty anal about the cosmetic condition of my stereo equipment so naturally I was pretty nervous about buying damaged equipment, but I just couldn't pass up that price! Turns out my fears were unfounded. Yes there are a couple of small indentions on the rear edges of both speakers, but they're nowhere near as visibly obvious as the rather severe scratching shown in some of the sample photos. So anyway, the first thing that struck me after hooking these up was that that the top end was spectacular, far more detailed and realistic than any dome tweeter I had ever heard. Unfortunately, the midrange lacked warmth and didn't sound nearly as refined as the upper end, plus the bass was a little on the tubby side. I tried playing a burn-in cd on repeat, but to be honest it didn't seem to help much. Worried that I may have to return the speakers, I desperately thought maybe the speakers were just revealing flaws of the circa 1998 receiver (brand starts with a "p") I was using. So I swapped out the receiver with another brand (starts with a "y") with a better reputation for sound quality, and suddenly the warmth had returned to voices and the bass seemed much tighter. I can't really characterize the results as dramatic, but the subtle improvements were really all these speakers needed. Now they truly sound like high end speakers! Thanks Crutchfield!
    Pros:
Terrific highs that are completely non-fatiguing (at least to my ears)
    Cons:
Reveals flaws in upstream components (but is that really a bad thing?)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me say first i purchased these open box. They arrived a little damaged on corners from shipping so that was my first disappointment. I hooked them up to my Yamaha rs-700 stereo receiver anyways hoping to impress and awe. Sadly this was not the case. They did sound good, though somewhat muffled compared to my reference speakers. As far as being efficient, i did not notice a significant difference compared to the Polk audio RTi-1s i had been using. The more i listened comparing the two speakers i concluded the Polks won hands down. The Polk RT-1s are in a whole different class, outperforming the Klipsh in every aspect. So, are they good? Yes. But for less money and better performance and i recommend trying the RT-1s instead. On a side note i auditioned these with rock, acoustic and some classical music.
    Pros:
    ok sound
    Cons:
cheap construction for price, not a wide soundstage

Great sounding speakers, with plenty of bass! I also have a pair of 81's and it is difficult to tell the difference between them. For the money, they can't be beat! Also love the cherry cabinets
    Pros:
Great, full range sound, attractive cabinets, near perfect size for wall mounts.
    Cons:
    Cherry cabinets are being discontinued.

    Amazing

These sound so amazing, I ended up buying a second pair. The dynamic range is incredible. Be warned these are pretty bright speakers and caused minor listening fatigue for the first week tell you get used to the upfront sound. My Onkyo txnr1010 receivers audyssey xt32 room calibration had these setup super bright at first. I ran it again with more precise placing of the microphone and it sounds alot more neutral to me now. I also have the rc62ii, two rs42ii, two rw12d and my 7.2 system sounds so smooth together. Make sure to buy from Crutchfield because their customer service is 2nd to none.
    Pros:
Dynamic range and super easy to power because of the super high sensitivity. Crutchfield A+++++++
    Cons:
Cherry finish is discontinued. Seems like I bought the last pair :) Horn tweeters may be too bright sounding for some audiophiles.

    Great speakers

Written By PadreSoler, Fairfield, IA on Thursday, April 25, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've installed these speakers with my Cambridge Audio Sonata AR30 receiver and the sound is excellent for such a compact size. The highs are very crisp, midrange is clear and full. I've paired them with a Polk Audio PS10 subwoofer, which does a decent job of boosting the low end. Although there are better subwoofers out there, size was big factor for me--no room to go any bigger for that component. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Klipsch RB-61s to anyone wanting a compact system for a smaller room.

Great sound from such mid sized speakers, Rich bass too. My hearing isn't the best, I am not an audiophile, but enjoy these speakers immensely. The size is great, not heavy, easy to connect wires.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for some relatively small but sonically good speakers for a small library room in my house. These fit the need nicely and sound excellent at either low or high volumes. The is little colorization of the sound so they present a flat response without the eventually tiring 'peaking' some smaller speakers exhibit. The speakers are relatively heavy (20lb each) with well made cabinets, fronts and connectors. I definitely recommend these for small (14 x 14 ft) rooms.

    great sound

    Excellence in a small package

Written By Bruce, Cleveland, OH on Tuesday, April 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered 4 of these speakers for my front and rear channels, very impressed with the crisp highs and smooth midrange with the SW112 subwoofer allocating the bass at <60hz. The workmanship is topnotch and wont be disappointed if you wish to have speakers both quality sound and aesthetically appealing.
    Pros:
Very clear highs, pronouncing sounds you have not noticed before with cheaper speakers. The Tractix Horn truly widens the sound spectrum in both the focal listening position and throughout your room. You can achieve a true well blended surround sound that does not deter your listening pleasure by focusing on the sound of one speaker. These bookshelfs are perfect for those with pets without having to sacrifice quality.
    Cons:
Perhaps the only thing is Klipsch discontinuing the cherry finish which I don't mind ordering a black center speaker to blend with the TV.

    Not for me, I guess

Written By EdRL, Eastern Mass. on Friday, March 29, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perhaps it was me. Maybe I overtaxed these speakers by trying to use them in a room too large and open (18X24), but in the week I tried them out, I found them far too strident. The little boxes that tried too hard always made me feel like I was listening through a set of cardboard tubes. The low end sounded overwhelmed and the highs too abrasive. Thanks to Crutchfield's liberal terms, I was able to return them with minimal hassle. Now I must either clean up my old Heresy's, or prepare myself to spend a lot more money to get the easy flow of sound that I prefer.
    Pros:
    Excellent bargain at Crutchfield's price
    Cons:
Appear to need a smaller listening venue
