Kenwood

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Kenwood KFC-W3013PS

by Jo Greene

Kenwood puts decades of experience into building their Performance Series subs, so you can have powerful, reliable bass in your vehicle. Check out the KFC-W3013PS 12" sub — you get a heavy-duty polypropylene cone reinforced by a tough rubber surround that accommodates the extra-long cone excursion. And this sub handles up to 400 watts RMS, so you can rock out out with plenty of thunder.

The Diamond Array Pattern reinforces the cone so that it won't warp during heavy bass production. A dual ventilation system pulls heated air out of the motor structure through the back and the sides of the sub, so the inner works stay cooler during those long, loud jams. Put this Kenwood in a suitable enclosure, power it with a nice amp, and get ready to party.

Highlights:

  • 12" 4-ohm subwoofer

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Cone: The KFC-W3013PS uses a polypropylene cone and rubber surround for added durability.

Heat Transfer System: A dual ventilation system designed helps keep the motor structure cool, improving power handling and longevity.

Long Stroke Design: The pole piece has been extended to provide a more linear magnetic field for woofer operation. This lowers distortion and provides the woofer with better low frequency response.

Double Stacked Magnet: The stacked magnet assembly is used to create a powerful linear motor with increased excursion capability for superior bass output.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals on one side of the woofer connect to your amplifier's wiring. The posts will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, or bare wire up to 10 gauge.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Kenwood recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 1.25 cubic feet (from 0.75 to 1.75 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Kenwood recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 2.0 cubic foot  (from 1.5 to 2.5 cubic feet is acceptable) using an 12-3/4" x 1-1/2" x 21-1/2" slot port. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output.

I have one in a 1.25 cf sealed box, powered by a JL Audio JX-500/1D and this thing thumps!!! I actually think it may be too much, but thankfully I added JL's remote knob (JL Audio RBC-1), so I can control the thump "as needed"!
    Pros:
    Heavy, well made.
    Cons:
    None.

    Amazing bass

Written By Jacob, Thorndale.tx on Friday, January 11, 2013

i have two of these bad boys in a 2.02 each slot ported Ground shaker box. These subwoofers are pretty loud for the price! i have a 1000 watt kenwood monoblock and a 1.0 micro farad capacitor (soundstream) and these things slam. i listen to everything and so im very picky with subwoofers and a friend told me to try them out. ive had alpine, memphis mojo, Blaupunkt, and kicker. these subs are up there with the alpines not quite as good and memphis but pretty dang close. definety buy these again!
    Pros:
    amazing build quality!
    Cons:
the plastic peice that goes on top were the screws go is petty weak and i busted it with screws!

    Kenwood Slams

Written By Eze, Antioch, CA on Tuesday, September 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pushing this sub in a sealed box with 500 watts RMS from a Kenwood amp. Gain is set to 3/4's. Hits hard and loud with the right amp. The proper combination of power to sub rating is important, and makes a significant difference. This 12" sub mounted in the limited trunk space of my Mustang rivals most of the local SUV's running around with two 15"s pushed by some flea market amplifier that claims 1 million watts. Don't push this sub with anything less than 400 watts - you'll be wasting your money and you'll sound distorted.
    Pros:
Clean look with the spiral diamond pattern. Easy install, all hardware included, except...
    Cons:
Should come with a sealing foam ring. Did not.

Very good speaker but buy it from somewhere else

Written By Sh3llshock55, North Carolina on Saturday, September 01, 2012

I bought one of these brand new in a custom made box at best buy in greenville, NC for $89.00. No discounts. No special deals. That is the price they had at that specific store. Anyways, if you want to spend the extra money on here go for it. The speaker is absoluelty amazing. It is what I wanted. I didn't want two 15's. I just wanted one good subwoofer and a nice amp. I am pushing this bad boy with a brand new mono alpine 500watt RMS amp D amplifier. That cost $199.00 at best buy but I got a 15% discount because of the rude customer service. It hits hard but not to hard. I pulled up at the gas pump with it blasting and the cashier refused to serve me because my speakers were shaking her windows. I had to turn them down. My factory tweeters still sound great and I can hear the lyrics along with the bass bumping. It sounds great, again! Def buy this. It is worth it. One alone is good, but if you want to shake the block a bit more, get two in a box with a bigger amp or an amp like mine but two dedicated to each speaker!
    Pros:
good clear low bass, hits hard, looks nice, sound good and treble is good.
    Cons:
If I start to push it to high then you start to get distortion. This is probably because I am pushing more watts to it at that point. 500 watt alpine amp. I am not sure how it is configured as it was done at best buy. I will take a look one day when I am not lazy. Could be a me problem. But overall, no cons really.

    pretty good subs

Written By Anonymous, menominee on Thursday, August 02, 2012

I got 2 of these in a ported box, 1.75 per each chamber and these things pound pretty hard, I've had them for about a month now and have had no problems yet. I'm powering with a sound ordinance 500 Watt (very nice by the way) and a Kenwood 500 Watt, one amp for each sub, the only problem is that when I use them for a while you can distinctly smell the voicecoils burning pretty bad but other than that, great all around subs
    Pros:
    Built good and LOUD
    Cons:
Voice coils are burning pretty bad and wont know how long they will last

    Awesome Sub

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All I have to say, is WOW. $150.00 is a little much for this Subwoofer, but wow, what you pay for is what you get. This thing is built like a tank, it looks sleek, and sounds great! The mids are a little faint and the highs are weak, but the lows pound hard. I have this thing in a sealed box, and I can get everything I want out of this while pushing it at 350 watts without disturbing everyone within a 5 mile radius.
    Pros:
Solid, Cool looking, Nice Looking, Loud, Tight,
    Cons:
Mid to High range is a little weak, Needs a Grill to cover it for safety reasons.

    These subs POUND

Written By Mr. J, Earth on Sunday, May 20, 2012

First, the only reason that I gave them a 1 star on Build Quality is because I have only had them a week. So I don't know? Now to the review. I got these put in Friday the 18th in a PT Cruiser with a sealed box, a Kenwood deck, and a 2000 watt Boss amp. I'm still in the break in period so I can't turn it up loud but my wife still says she can hear me coming for a couple minutes before I pull up. I can't imagine what these would sound like once hey are broke in. WOW. Will definitely buy Kenwood again when I need new stuff!!!
    Pros:
    EVERY SINGL THING!!!

    NOTHING

    Chest rattling subs

Written By BlackIrish, Denver, CO on Friday, May 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these as part of a Crutchfield package and I am not disappointed. These babies hit so hard and Im only at 50% bass boost and 50% input sensitivity. Was worried the amp it cam e with would power them but my fear was unfounded. Car is older so parts are vibrating. Have been tightening things up for weeks.
    Pros:
Nice sized magnets good bass response easy to hook up goes well with amp I bought. All in all a great package. Im not at all disappointed.
    Cons:
Did not come with grills/speaker covers only plastic trim ring.

    Absolutely amazing!

Written By Ryan M, Lancaster, PA on Wednesday, May 02, 2012

I'm driving it with a Kenwood KAC-8105D which is only 300RMS compared to the subs rated RMS of 400. I slapped it in a 1 cu ft sealed enclosure with some polyfill, and oh my god this thing hits hard. If I turn up the gain my mirrors are shaking. IN A SEALED BOX! ONE SUB! To think that I could drive it with another 100 watts RMS is crazy. Can't imagine this thing in a ported box. Couldn't dream of running two.
    Pros:
HITS HARD (even at lower RMS) Quality sound

PORT your box and you will be amazed!!

Written By HappySubOwner, Chicago, IL on Monday, February 27, 2012

Using a Kenwood KAC-7205 2 channel amp bridged to 1 channel for 500w x 1 RMS 2 farad DB Link cap First started out with a 1.24 cubic feet sealed box and it hit hard.. Very clean and responded great to several frequencies. Switched to a 1.93 Cubic Feet ported box and it sounds like I have 3 x 10's or 2 x 12's with no distortion. VERY IMPORTANT!! Use an online port length calculator to determine the correct size of your port. The wrong length will make a huge difference in sound. My slotted port opening is 4.75 tall by 2.5 wide and 11 inches long/deep. I have to show my friends it's only 1 sub before they believe me.. Can't imagine what 2 of these would sound like..
    Pros:
mounting depth durability sound response for the price
    Cons:
    none

I ordered these subs and I am more than pleased. They look amazing, and they sound just as amazing. After these I have a hard time looking at any other sub because they just don't compare to the purtyness of these. :) Thank you Crutchfield, for supplying us with the awesomeness of Kenwood.

    These are magnificent

Written By Jared C, Wesley Chapel, Fl on Saturday, January 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've put these subs in multiple enclosures, sealed, ported... in both, the bass was crisp and clean. They can get very loud with low distortion. And they hit hard when paired with a good amp.

These are awesome, because, not only do they sound great with rap/hip hop, they even sound good with heavy metal and anything with fast double bass drums.

I recommend using 2 of these bad boys in a sealed enclosure, with an amp (around 400 rms) dedicated to each one.

    You will not be disappointed
    Pros:
-Great price -crisp, clean sound -sustains loud volume for long periods of time -good for any genre -good in multiple enclosures -they look nice -easy to install -they're kenwood
    Cons:
I can't fit 10 of these in my trunk

    Blown up!

Written By Derek J, Texarkana, TX on Sunday, November 20, 2011

Overall good short term speakers for the value, but won't last for the long hall.
    Pros:
    Good sound and performance
    Cons:
After two years both speakers blew up. The first one smoked the voice coils and the second one came appart at the base of the cone. They were great while they lasted but they don't hold up. Was only using a 175 RMS sony amp with 1000 watt max.

Written By Sebastian, Paris, Tennessee on Monday, August 15, 2011

These subs are great for a truck.......They hit hard and have very clean and pure bass. They sound best if put in an enclosed box or under the seat box... Do not use an amp over 2000W on these subs because they cannot handle the power.
