Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Alpine SPR-60C

by Buck Pomerantz

Exceptional performance, even at high volume

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer Like it loud? Alpine designed their Type-R speakers for people who like to turn it up. They'll deliver big, dynamic sound with plenty of bass, and they'll handle lots of volume. They'll work great with your car stereo, but they really come into their own when you power them with an outboard amp.

Fine-tuned for clarity and balance

The Type-R SPR-60C component system features 6-3/4" multi-layer hybrid fiber woofers that deliver really strong bass response. Alpine's adapted the specially ridged surround, originally developed for their subs, to these speakers, so you get consistent, extended cone movement that pushes a lot of air. The silk tweeters produce smooth highs that bring out your music's detail and depth with no shrillness. Alpine mounts an EQ ring in front of the tweeters to help disperse the highs for a larger listening "sweet spot" in your ride. The tweeters mount separately so you can focus the sound better for your seating position.

Smaller, stronger neodymium magnets

Alpine uses powerful neodymium magnets which are much smaller than traditional magnets, so the SPR-60C's high-density polymer frames will fit into more places than most 6-3/4" woofers. External 2-way crossover networks control the high and low frequencies for seamless, clear sound — and they're 60% smaller than the old Type-R crossovers so they're easier to install. Type-R speakers have earned their reputation in the past as the masters of "crank it to the max," but Alpine has really kicked the performance factor of the latest models up a notch or two.

Note: Alpine describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

    Features

Woofers: The Alpine Type-R series component speakers feature multi-layered hybrid fiber woofer cones; for durability and superior linearity, they use rubber surrounds.

HAMR Surround: Type-R speakers use Alpine's multi roll HAMR surround (patent pending), a technology developed for Alpine subwoofers that maintains control and stability at higher volume levels. HAMR surround combines increased cone area and long linear cone excursion for deep, powerful bass response.

Motor Structure: The woofer's High-performance Linear Drive Motor structure features a square-wire voice coil with a large 30mm diameter, driven by a small but powerful neodymium magnet. This design provides linear motion over a wide cone excursion.

Neodymium Magnet: The neodymium magnet on the Type-R series woofers allows smaller speaker dimensions, making them easier to install in a wide variety of vehicles. They are also lighter than designs using standard magnet technology.

HD Polymer Frame: The new Type-R woofers use a revolutionary HD Polymer frame, making the speaker stronger, lighter, and easier to install.

Tweeters: The SPR-60C includes 1" (25mm) silk dome tweeters. Alpine's EQ Ring improves the tweeter's dispersion characteristics, providing excellent off-axis response. When using the flush-mount housing you can also tilt the tweeters up to 15° to focus the sound toward your ears.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters come installed in a swiveling flush-mount housing. You can also install the tweeters behind factory grilles using the included stealth mount brackets. The stealth mount brackets can be top or bottom mounted. The installed tweeter dimensions are:

Flush Mount (swivel) Factory Location (bottom mount) Factory Location (top mount)
    Mounting Depth 0.67" 0.965" 0"
    Mounting Height 0.43" 0" 0.8"
    Cutout Diameter 2.007" N/A N/A
    Frame Diameter 2.275" 1.7" x 2.8" 1.7" x 2.8"

Crossovers: The SPR-60C features low-pass crossovers attached to each woofer's input terminal and separate high-pass crossovers in-line between the woofers and tweeters. Because the crossovers are separate, the system can be bi-amped. Two-sided tape is included to mount the high-pass crossovers and their dimensions are:

    • Width: 2.65"
    • Height: 0.97"
    • Depth: 1.27"

Tweeter Attenuation: Each crossover has four tweeter level options, allowing you to precisely tune the high frequencies to the car interior and tweeter placement. Using the supplied jumpers select 0dB (no attenuation), -2dB, -4dB, or -6dB.

    Great Product

Written By Barney, Atlanta, GA on Monday, May 20, 2013

Just replaced my stock speakers on my Nissan Altima 1999 cuz all four speakers were blown. Installed these babies in the front. I had to drill a hole in the door for the tweeters. Installed SPR-60 coaxials in the back. Let me say that it sounds amazing. Stock speakers sounded like garbage and these blew me away. I used Fatmatt to line the doors and am powering the babies with a PDX-F4.

Alpine will never disappoint you. I got the 147BT, SPR-60c, and SPR-60 and all are great!!
    Pros:
    Great sound, crisp and clear
    Cons:
    Expensive

    Better then JL C5's

Written By John, Charleston sc on Sunday, January 13, 2013

I have always been a jl and alpine fan. I have had c3's then c5's. They were nice. But not wow. I have an alpine pdx-f4 100x4 to power two of these components and two channels to a kenwood 12. I places raamat (way better and cheaper then dynomatt) and these speakers came alive. Any genre, they are game. The smaller crossovers, swivel design tweeters, and flexible surrounds make these stand out too. And for the price?! Great buy!
    Pros:
    Clean, sound great, hefty design

    Super component

Written By Wade C, Westerly, RI on Tuesday, January 01, 2013

I've put together quite a few systems in the last few years. I've tried other brands and been satisfied. This time I decided to try the Alpine components. When I first installed them they sounded pretty good during the testing phase. Once I dialed in the amps and set the EQ on the deck these speakers really came to life. I was immediately impressed. Then I cranked up the volume and I was blown away, literally and figuratively. I didn't use any of the crossovers on the amp, just let these speakers go. Great bass! Crisp highs! I couldn't believe them. If you are considering these speakers you will not be disappointed. The subwoofer I got to go with these really isn't even necessary. My setup is a Sony XAV-601BT, Alpine SPR-60C (front), Alpine SBR-69 (rear), Rockford Fosgate Prime R400-4D (amp). Again, I couldn't be happier with these speakers and would recommend them to anyone.
    Pros:
    Awesome sound, great power handling
    Cons:

    Incredible!

Had these installed in my 2010 Civic sedan powered by 150 watts RMS. I've never heard such incredible sound. Sparkling (but not screechy) highs and tons of mids. The tweeters were installed in the factory location and they sound great.

I've never had such wonderful sound in my car. You can crank it loud without distortion or keep it low and hear every detail.
    Pros:
    Everything.
    Cons:
    None.

    alpine Type Rs

Written By Yianni, Ruckersville on Friday, August 10, 2012

I bought a set of these to put in my TJ's soundbar, got them in the discount section of the Charlottesville store for 139.99! What a steal, these sound better than the infinity kappas I had previously, as well as the Boston acoustics the PO had put in by far. I'm running them off a pdxf4 and its very loud and very clear can't even hear the hum of my 35's when I crank it or the wind with the top off, I love it. Ain't a better place to get your stuff than from crutchfield now I Just gotta add an Sbr-s83v and wait for a set of 5.25 type r components hit the discount rack for the dash.

    Clarity, looks, quality, price

Wow! Amazing sound for the price!

Written By Patrick, Chester, VA on Wednesday, August 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll start out with saying that I've listenend to and owned several component sets over the past 15 years in various vehicles and I consider myself a bit of an audiophile guru. I was looking for a really good component set for my 2011 Honda Accord coupe, and if you own one of these veicles, you know how difficult it is finding something that will fit in the factory locations without any cutting. I've always been a HUGE Alpine fan, and was hesitant at first for the price of this pair of compnents. After reading some reviews on here, and listening for myself, I was simply blown away! So much detail and halfway descent bass (if you have a large door opening) for the price! Add an amplifier behind these, and they will sing, and I mean LOUD. I'm using an Alpine PDX-V9 5 channel with a solid 100W going to each. I have a 10 year old pair of Alpine F#1 Status audiophile grade components in my truck that were over $1200/pair, and these Type-R's will give them a run for the money at a quarter of the cost. The tweeters are a bit on the "bright" side, so if you like a lot of upper frequency band treble, these are definitely for you. I reccommend attenuating the tweeters on the crossover network to at least a -2db instead of 0 (flat) setting. The build quality is good overall, and they use powerful neodymium magnets which allow for greater power handling and are easier when it comes to depth in mounting. Overall, great for the money, and a 9 out of 10 for everything else.
    Pros:
Great sound, easy to install, no bulky crossover network, lots of detail
    Cons:
Tweeters are a bit "bright" but can easily be adjusted

    I recommend an amp

Written By john, Cohoes, ny on Friday, July 13, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my 2010 Ford F150 XLT supercrew with SYNC at the same time as a Sony XNV stereo. I must say they are a million times clearer than the stock speakers. I compared by fading front and then back as I did not replace the rear speakers. HUGE difference in clarity. The tweeters were way too bright for my taste, but I easily reduced the harshness by adjusting the the crossover to -4db. What I don't like is the lack of low end. I figured I'd lose some bc these I think are meant for those with a sub in their vehicle, but these are really lacking. The factory speakers hit lower notes than these do, albeit muddy low notes. I think this might be somewhat rectified with the addition of an amp to increase their power and punch. I am not using any kind of amplifier to them. Just the 17w RMS from the head unit.
    Pros:
    Clarity. Adjustable tweeter volume.
    Cons:
    Lack of bass notes

    Perfection

Written By John, El Dorado on Friday, April 27, 2012

I purchased this component system to replace the previous Kicker DS65.2 components i had installed in my 2003 Toyota Tundra Access Cab SR5 and I must say that these speakers are far superior to any other brand or type of speaker that I have installed, or for that matter, even heard. The sound these speakers emit is flawless in every area: crisp but not piercing treble, powerful middle, and just the right amount of bass. However I do recommend that you install bass blockers on them to insure that you do not damage the speakers when increasing the dB. Thats what I have done in my vehicle and: let the speakers do the talking and the subs do the bumpin. Way to go Alpine.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wife's factory Infinity component speakers blew in her car and we bought these Alpines to replace them. The installation was easy enough and although the tweeters didn't fit in the factory locations they look great where I installed front and rear. I was a little disappointed at first, but after only a few minutes these speakers really started to shine. The sound is crisp and very clear. The sound just surrounds us in the car now and that makes the wife happy....happy wife happy life thanks crutchfield
    Pros:
clear, ease of installation, and highs, mids, and lows are very nicely separated
    Cons:
If you want the hard thump get the sub, if you listen to a wide variety of music these work great

    Wonderful and Powerful

Written By Dirty Urdi, Illinois on Saturday, October 15, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, as of now, these speakers are fairly new. There aren't that many reviews here or anywhere else online. Take my word, these speakers are worth the money.

Originally I had ordered 2x sets of component speakers, Polk Audio MM6501 6"3/4, and they sounded good for the price. After adding a Alpine MRP-F300 (amp) and a Kenwood Touch HU, everything seemed finished. Well after three weeks of use, the front right woofer cracked/blew. I called Crutchfield and after 3 weeks of backorders and out of stock replies, I finally told them I wanted a new set of speakers. They sent me these speakers (free of charge) and after 3 hours of installing, I can comfortably say that these sound deeper in bass. The treble really stands out in this set (beats the polk audios), and that's what you want from speakers. Subwoofers are for bass.

If your looking for speakers for under $300 then take a risk and buy these. You can thank yourself afterwards.

    Simply Amazing!

Installed in a 2010 Ford Escape
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I just received these speakers yesterday and had them installed yesterday evening and I could not be more pleased. If this is what they sound like now, I can only imagine how much better they'll sound after they've broken in. I have a 2010 Ford Escape and these speakers sound like they should have been there from the beginning. They are rated as being able to handle up to 110 watts rms and I can only imagine how that would sound if my amplifier were capable of putting out that much power per channel. As it stands, I'm sending it 75 rms from a Pioneer GM-D9500F and they sound great. The low-pass crossover is set to approximately 80hz. The best part is that aside from the holes that had to be cut in the doors to accommodate the tweeters, it looks like nothing has been done to my car at all.

I purchased these because aside from being able to fit in 6x8" speaker locations, they were one of the few speakers in the price range with silk dome tweeters. And true to information from Crutchfield, they really do sound warmer and less shrill than other similar speakers I've heard like Infinity, Kicker, and Boston Acoustics.

And just so you know, I tend to listen to Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz (not contemporary) and House/Electronica music primarily, but I love artists like N.E.R.D., Res, and the Roots who actually play instruments.
