Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-122

by Zak Billmeier

PANDORA® Internet radio is a great way to enjoy music, and now you can play it in your car with Alpine's CDE-122 CD receiver. Once your iPhone's connected to the Alpine's USB input, you can select PANDORA® as a source and use the receiver's controls to navigate your stations. Dedicated "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" buttons let you rate songs on the fly so that PANDORA® knows what music to play for you. You can even create a PANDORA® station right on the CDE-122 when a song or artist you like is playing.

Play your other music, too
Got a lot of songs on your iPod? Find the one you want quickly with Alpine's Percentage Search — it lets you jump through your library using the radio preset buttons.

Of course, you can play all your CDs, plus discs you've loaded with MP3 files. You can also load your files on a USB thumb drive, then pop it in the front USB input. The front auxiliary input comes in handy for connecting a Dock & Play satellite radio or another portable player.

Boost the power, build a system
A set of preamp outputs provides a convenient connection for an amp or a powered sub, and you can use the subwoofer level control to dial in the right amount of bass. Then get your sound right using the 3-band parametric EQ, or choose from one of the six preset options. One more cool feature — this receiver works with Alpine's Power Pack, a compact box that hooks up easily to your receiver, boosting its power from 18 watts up to a serious 45 watts RMS per channel.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Outstanding unit for a tight budget

Written By TD Robinson, Saratoga Springs, NY on Sunday, November 18, 2012
Installed in a 2004 Honda Accord LX
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After the factory head unit quit on my 2004 Honda Accord, I was frustrated by what appeared to be an impossible task. Honda recommended that I either replace the entire unit for $700+ or replace the amplifier section for $240, not including install charges. When I turned to Crutchfield I was delighted to find a simple yet elegant solution, replacing the storage bin with an after market head installation unit. I chose the Alpine, not just because it fit the space, but because I had owned a similar unit 10 years ago. For less than $150 I have a much better sounding audio system in the Honda, which I was able to install on by myself. Alpine rocks! Yes!!
      Pros:
Amazing features like USB, Aux connections, and Pandora functions. Really excellent value for the money. Clean and clear sound
      Cons:
Now I need to replace the factory speakers with a decent set to get the full impact of the Alpine head unit. (not really a negative)

      Alpine CDE-122

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great and was easy to install.
      Pros:
Love it so far. 4th Alpine head unit that I have owned. Top notch equipment and best value in my opinion. I really like the USB input, I may never play another CD in my car again. Haven't used Pandora on unit yet, but feel this will be a pro also.
      Cons:
no hard copy of the owners manual. I always like to keep this in the glove box for reference. Came with a CD, but you have to print it off. Would rather have had a rear AUX hook-up to hardwire in my portable Sirius XM radio.

Improve how easy it is to navigate threw the menus, don't even need to read the book. Controlling the iPad is super easy too, for the money, it's the best going, always been a fan of alpine
      Pros:
      Easy use, price
      Cons:
I liked when they used to put an aux input on the back of the radio...

      Alpine CDE-122 HU

Written By LJ, Charlotte, NC on Saturday, September 22, 2012
Installed in a 1995 Ford Mustang
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Tends not to have as good a signal sensitivity as the OEM unit for FM (which, if you do your research, you'll find it true for almost all aftermarket HUs). Panel lights don't dim as much as I would have expected when the interior instrument illumination is activated. Sound and features are great. Ipod navigation via the USB from the HU a bit challenging, cannot safely adjust it when you are driving if using the USB control function. Does fine w/ using the AUX input but then the Ipod won't charge, but overall an acceptable replacement for the defunct OEM unit. Great power; sub outs; easy to adjust tone, balance, fade, et al. Very happy w/ the purchase. I don't buy things for "coolness factor"- I put 5 stars there just to not hurt the review- It is a good HU, "cool" is unimportant compared to ease of use, buttons, control placement, etc.
      Pros:
The right controls in the right places, clear sound, adaptable to Aux or USB inputs, has sub/pre-amp output if you wish, easy to install. Doesn't scream "steal me" and I'm not interested in pulling the faceplate all the time. (installed in a convertible and I leave the top down all the time) Alpine is definitely the way to go.
      Cons:
      FM signal sensitivity.

Excellent unit, does just what I wanted it to. Instructions could be clearer on some of the items, but I got it done. Very nice unit - Alpine is still a class act.
      Pros:
Excellent ergonomics, able to customize certain features, good sound quality, excellent display
      Cons:
Confusing instructions, FM tuner isn't the best of seen as far as sensitivity

Fantastic head unit. This is the second one of these I've had, I sold my car that I had put the first one into, and the first thing I ordered for the new car was another one of these. Great low price and one of the only recievers that will let me plug my iphone in through USB and still control my music with the phone, I hate browsing through my 8000 songs using a stereo. Sounds even better paired with the Alpine Power Pack
      Pros:
-Low Price -Alpine quality -use Iphone media player controls
      Cons:
-Only one set of pre-amp outputs

Well built with great sound. A solid upgrade from factory. It gets pretty loud and sounds great with a couple pair of mid-line speakers. Seriously do we need a removeable faceplate on a radio at this price? Knock $20 off and sell the unit without it.
      Pros:
      great sound
      Cons:
lights don't dim so it produces glare at the driver.

I bought this radio as a replacement to my Sony Xplod radio after it died after a year and a half. The sound is better than the Sony and it has the same features as far as using CDs, radio, auxiliary, and iPod. Hopefully the faceplate on this one won't fry like the Sony did after a year
      Pros:
Great sound, easy instal. I can still use my iPod and the user interface is great.
      Cons:
No search feature when using iPod/USB attachment.

I received this unit the next day after purchasing, thanks Crutchfield for the super fast shipping!!!!!! The unit itself if well constructed, typical for Alpine except for the fact that the main knob comes off fairly easily but slips back on. This seemed a little odd to me but oh well. I love all of the features, took a couple of days to get used to how the pandora playlists work, but now I love it!! Great value!!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It keeps powering off and on randomly a couple of times a day. This didn't start until after the 60 day Crutchfield return/replacement policy so now I have to either live with it or send it back for repair which means I have no sound in the car during that time :( I guess I got the booger of the lot. Other than that the sound is good.
      Cons:
      Powers off and on randomly.

An Alpine has me pining to upgrade my stereo!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Alpine was a leader in the industry when I was a kid and I remember pining over some of those original Alpine decks with city names. I remember thinking that Seattle was the only one that I could even close to afford. Now my son has his first car (1999 Outback) and I surprised him with this Alpine CDE-122. We paid $130 with an installation kit and a rebate...Seamless install and clean final installation. What a great set of features and great sound for the money. You can't beat this unit. It is also very handsome, it doesn't look like it was trying too hard to out design its competitors. Restrained is the word for it. This unit has me considering upgrading my stereo soon. Thanks Crutchfield!
      Pros:
Price, sound quality, ipod features....and others
      Cons:
Doesn't have any expandability or add on modules that I can see.
