DVD receivers: They're not just for movies

DVD receivers add a new level of entertainment to your vehicle. You can watch a movie on the screen when you're parked on a Saturday night, or play a DVD through your rear seat video setup on the road. Touchscreen receivers allow you to breeze through menus with the tip of your finger. Most DVD receivers feature a USB input for audio from your iPod, and the ability to add an adapter that allows video to display on the screen. Some receivers even offer connections for a center speaker and a subwoofer, so you can build a full-fledged theater in your car, just like at home.

Our take on the JVC KW-AVX810

by Zak Billmeier

Don't limit yourself to a single-sized receiver when you've got a double-sized dash opening in your car. JVC's KW-AVX810 DVD receiver will look right at home in your dash, with a 7" video touchscreen that makes it easy to access receiver functions on the fly. A handy proximity sensor illuminates the receiver's buttons when your hand approaches the screen.

Enjoy videos and movies on the KW-AVX810's bright screen when you're parked. The built-in amplifier brings out the best in your your tunes when you're driving, and you can compensate for your car's acoustics with the 7-band iEQ equalizer. The wireless remote lets your passengers adjust your system without disturbing your driving.

Playback options
The KW-AVX810 plays standard and recordable CDs and DVDs, including MP3, WMA, WAV, and AAC files you've burned to DVD, so you can cruise for days with the music on one disc. If you prefer, you can load up an SD™ card or a thumb drive with files to play back through the receiver's SD card slot or USB input.

Expansion options
Control your iPod® on the big screen with an optional adapter, or add the programming variety of satellite radio to the mix. JVC's optional Bluetooth® adapter gives you the convenience of hands-free calling as you listen to your caller over your car's speakers.

With an optional second monitor, your backseat passengers can watch a video in the back while you enjoy peace and quiet up front. Three sets of high-powered preamp outputs let you add amps and subs to get extra kick and clarity from your music or soundtracks.

Product Overview: The KW-AVX810 double-DIN multimedia unit includes a DVD/CD receiver with a 7" motorized touch-screen monitor which is detachable. It also has CD changer and iPod control, Bluetooth capability (with optional adapter), HD and Satellite Radio compatibility (with optional  tuners), SD-card slot, USB port, optical digital output, A/V line input, composite video output and rear-view camera input.

Detachable Motorized 7" TFT LCD Touch-Screen Monitor: The KW-AVX810 features a motorized 7" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 touch-screen monitor with an adjustable viewing angle. The pixel resolution of the display is 1440 horizontal x 234 vertical (336,960 pixels total). The LCD serves as a video monitor, system information display and touch-screen control panel. The monitor's brightness can be adjusted from -15 to +15. You can detach the touch-screen LCD monitor and place it in its supplied soft face case to prevent theft.

Display Angle: The motorized display can be tilted (up) to one of seven angles.

Wallpaper: You can choose from four background wallpapers; Metal, Sky, Bright and Plain. The wallpaper color can be changed from blue, light-blue, red, orange, yellow, green, purple, dark-blue, dark-green, brown, light-brown or black.

Selectable Aspect Modes: You can choose from four aspect modes for the in-dash display:

      • Regular: for 4:3 source material, 4:3 and 16:9 pictures display with black bars on either side (16:9 images are compressed)
      • Full: expands 4:3 pictures horizontally to fill the entire width of the screen, distorting the picture slightly but retaining full image height
      • Panorama: for viewing 4:3 pictures naturally on the unit's wide-screen display
      • Auto: the correct aspect mode is automatically chosen based on the incoming signal

Dimmer: When 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead and the dimmer set to Auto, the display dims. The dimmer can also be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display is always dimmed), or Dimmer Time Set (you program the time for the dimmer to turn off an on). The unit also features 3 dimmer levels to choose from - Bright, Middle, or Dark.

Picture Adjust: Brightness, Contrast, Color, and Tint can each be adjusted from -15 to +15.

Disc Compatibility: The JVC KW-AVX810 supports the playback of the following disc types: DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-Audio, CD-R/RW and Video CD.

Compressed File Playback: The KW-AVX810 can play MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, JPEG, DivX, MPEG1, and MPEG2 files recorded on DVD-R, DVD-RW ,DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, or Romeo. MP3 and WMA files with bit rates from 32-320 kbps are supported along with IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) and WMA/WAV Tag for album and artist information. The unit supports AAC files with bit rates of 16-320 kbps. DivX video files with resolutions 720 x 576 or less are also supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 5000 files and 250 folders, with a maximum of 999 files per folder.

MOS-FET Amplifier: The JVC KW-AVX810 features a MOS-FET amplifier that is CEA-2006 compliant and rated at 20 watts RMS x 4 channels in 4-ohm and 1% THD+N with a signal to noise ratio of 80 dBA.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KW-AVX810 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to high, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned off when all the speakers are powered by outboard amplifiers.

7-Band Equalizer: Along with a flat preset, there are 8 preset EQ curves and three user programmable fields; Hard Rock, R&B, Pop, Jazz, Dance, Country, Reggae, Classic, User 1, User 2, and User 3. The user presets can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For each User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -10dB to +10dB in 2dB increments.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of Auto or On.

Source Volume Control: The volume of each source (other than FM radio) can be adjusted relative to the FM volume, so the level is constant as you change from one input to another. The volume level of each source can be adjusted from -12 to +12.

Source Naming: The KW-AVX810 allows you to assign names of up to 16 characters each for the A/V input, the EXT input (connected to the CD changer input using an optional adapter), and up to 30 AM and FM stations.

      2005 Mazda 3

      Installed in a 2005 Mazda 3
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently got this installed in my Mazda and I love it. All the music this puts out is crystal clear and sounds great. I upgraded the speakers in the car as well and no amp needed. This unit takes care of the job just fine!

I love the fact that I can burn my music onto a Data DVD and they all get picked up and played! I have almost 1000 songs on 1 DVD. Perfect!

      JVC KW-AVX810

Written By Anonymous, Louisa, KY on Monday, January 25, 2010
Installed in a 2002 Ford Mustang
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got this installed in my 02 Mustang GT. I am very pleased with it, makes my stock speakers sound much better than the factory disc changer. It is very easy to use, has great features. I don't think you will find a better unit for this price. I wanted to rate this product b/c it is an amazing unit, but I mostly wanted to say a few things about Crutchfield. You wont find another place with this level of expertise. I had a local stereo shop install my jvc unit and they didn't install it completely correct, so I called Crutchfield with the problem and explained it to one of there tech's and he automatically knew the problem. Returned to the sound shop and he fixed it with the help of Crutchfield Tech. His name is Rudy, he is the Dr. House of car stereo diagnostics. Don't hesitate to purchase from Crutchfield. They are as professional, helpful, knowledgeable. You wont be disappointed.

      my radio

Written By "E", paterson, nj on Wednesday, October 07, 2009

I believe the jvc dvd is a very good radio for the money it has all the options that i was
looking for when i was looking to purchase a in dash dvd. The picture quality of the dvd
is great and the surround sound system just amplified the volume of what was already
in my car . I want to get the satelite radio or the blootooth added to my system but i am
now skeptical because of some the reviews that i am recieving.

The only downsides i see so far is that on occasion but not often when playing a dvd or
a cd the disc pauses on a track or on a scene of the movie that's playing and the other
is the cloth pouch for the should have been something harder so it wouldn't get damaged if dropped

nice unit, not happy with satellite radio functionality though

Written By RONALD, Medford, MA on Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Overall, a nice unit, but there's a few things that bug me. With mp3s on the
sd card, it shows the folder and the song file name, but the names don't
scroll and there's not a lot of room to display the name.

The detachable faceplate is HUGE, I knew how big the screen is, height and
width, but depth is not was I was expecting, it is too thick, it's like carrying
      around a brick.

I am also disappointed in the sirius satellite radio features (using the
optional sirius connect package). I am surprised that I can't do standard
things that I did with my stand alone, cheapo sirius tuner such as pause the
stream or store favorite songs / artists as well as the listing of channels
doesn't include the channel number, nor could I access a channel by typing
in it's #. also, clicking on category changes the channel to the first channel
in that category, I just want to list, not change (you have to go to options /
list to do that).. Anyway, it's nice to have it integrated, but I am going to
      miss these features...

      Great DVD/Receiver

Written By Deke, Morristown, TN on Sunday, August 30, 2009
Installed in a 2008 Toyota Yaris
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased for 2008 Yaris 3 Dr and coupled with four Polk components and
JL Audio 300 watt 10" subwoofer. Dynamat installed throughout all side
panels resulting in a quieter background than you might expect. Bluetooth
adapter and accessory input added and work very well. The USB input
works well and simply. Graphics are robust but simple. Picture quality is
excellent. The sound in this little car is plenty without an additional
amplifier and sound quality is excellent. Installation is trivial. Back-up
      camera
picture quality is marginal. The bluetooth link to an MP3 player is an added
bonus. Radio reception is a bit weak.

      Very Nice

Written By Ryan, Raymond, WA on Saturday, August 29, 2009
Installed in a 2009 Toyota Tacoma

I decided to purchase this receiver instead of the newer AVX820 because it was on sale for a great price and it seemed to have all of the features I was looking for. I am very happy I did. It is far exceeding my expectations so far and I am very pleased with the price, features and quality.

The installation was fairly straight forward in my 2009 Toyota Tacoma and the aftermarket dash mount hardware fits in and looks almost stock. I forgot to purchase the steering wheel controls so those are next.

The only thing I think they could immediately improve on is the size of the bulky bluetooth add-on. I had a hard time finding a place inside my dash to place the unit. It is bluetooth and it doesn't need to be seen, make it tiny so it's easy to hide.

      JVC KW-AVX810

Written By John, Houston, TX on Saturday, August 15, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit about a month ago for my 2008 VW Passat. It accompanies a Kicker 300.1 amp to a Polk 10"db. and factory speakers (...which, for those who have heard a Passat's factory speakers, are exceptionally good and need not be replaced....I believe the car comes from the factory with Blaupunkt components.) This head unit's Mosfet power and multiple outputs are very good and the sound is wonderful. Moreover, it works flawlessly and has very common sense controls. The EQ is awesome....and the detachable face is a huge selling feature. However, as stated numerous times on other reviews, it might be a little slow for some people. For example, when connected to the ipod, songs will play for a second or two before it will display the song's information...and it does take about 5 seconds to change from say the ipod to a DVD. However, for me, this is no big deal at all....when it is actually occurring, it really is no big deal. For the money, this is an excellent unit...if you want to spend more, and want more features, shell out double what you paid for the JVC, and get a Pioneer. Although, you cannot argue with this item for this price.

The dvd player leaves a gap under the stereo when you install in a nissian frontier, which is very annoying to someone with OCD like myself. The Ipod option is very slow to respond. Over all it is a decent stereo for the money. Hint: if you have problems with the install search youtube.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with this head unit, I have always liked JVC car receivers and by having a detachable face on a DD unit is superb, the only two things I am not very crazy about is the fact that it is a little bit slow when going thru your files on USB/MP3, and my other complaint is the quality on the carry case for the faceplate, it is cheap, would have been way better to have a hard case instead, like traditional carry cases on other receivers, it would offer more protection to the faceplate just in case it is dropped, Overall I really recommned this unit, you get your money's worth.

This unit is great, i like the ipod function but it is a little slow. It takes a few seconds to load when searching off the ipod. This is my main use so it sucks that it's slow, if wanting a touch screen and main use is ipod i wouldnt recommend this item but it is very simple to use. I installed it in my toyota solara and looks great

      Incredible

Written By Rich, ny on Thursday, December 25, 2008

I have this installed in my Scion TC. The mounting gear Crutchfield sent me didn't work. Supposedly, theres a TC mounting package but, it was out of stock. Crutchfield sent me some kind of universal mounting kit and according to the website...it said it would fit...it does not. I used the factory mounts from the factory radio and it worked fine. The factory radio door on the TC works fine opening and closing around the new JVC stereo but, the JVC motorized face rubs the factory door a little bit. I'm sure it could be modified but, I was too impatient so i just took it off.

The stereo itself is amazing. I couldn't be any more happier. The sound is amazing....I have polk audio speakers and they scream even more with the new JVC stereo installed. Theres so many options and settings with this stereo. The DVD picture quality is beyond my belief.

There were many many reasons why I chose to buy this DVD player Stereo but, one that I'm extremely happy with is the fact that it is a detachable face..... not many double din DVD players are detachable.

      I'm completely satisfied!

      Impressive HU, but not perfect

Written By Lee, Boston, MA on Sunday, November 30, 2008

I've been using the AVX-810 for a little over a week now, and so far I really like it. The sound it produces is really good- the 7 band EQ lets you use the pre-sets to get close to the sound you want, and then you can custom taylor the sound from there and save it to memory. Someone else's review mentioned that its sound quality is comparable to Alpine, and I agree. Its controls are simple and intuitive to use- I've figured out 98% of it's functions w/out opening the manual. I can use my steering wheel controls w/the optional adapter. It looks good and the touch screen layout works well.

My gripes are minor but noteworthy. It takes 10-15 seconds for songs to start playing from my ipod when switching the unit on or from another source back to the ipod. Not a big deal, but a little annoying. The search function for the ipod isn't quite as easy as the actual ipods search- especially with about 2500 songs on it. And the search function is a little slow. The removable face plate can be finiky to remove. You should be able to load your own pictures as backgrounds to it (this may be possible, but I haven't found it yet). And finally I think there should be an add-on Navigation option available.

DVD picture is typical for this type of unit. Overall I'm happy with the JVC.

      Great Product

Written By buck, Central Valley, CA on Sunday, November 09, 2008

I installed this receiver myself and was very straight forward. This receiver is great my audio is crystal clear and subs sound better than ever thanks to the 5V pre outs. This is one great product and well worth the money considering it has a detacheable face unlike all the othe double DIN receivers that don't have any security features even though they cost twice as much! The only downside to this is that it is a little slow to scroll when a USB device (Thats why it gets 4 out of 5) is installed but other than that you couldn't reallly ask for more except navigation in which case JVC has you covered with the NX7000

Installed in a 2005 Ford Mustang
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently installed in my '05 Mustang. This HU has all the features I wanted plus a detachable face. You can daisy chain up to 3 input modules (HD-Radio, Bluetooth, CD Changer, Aux Input, legacy iPod, Satellite Radio) for expansion. The unit supports a limited number of gestures for volume and skipping tracks so you don't have to take your eyes off the road for those things. The HD module gives you RDS/info text display for HD and analog stations and is much better then the factor radio's FM tuner was. Though it washes out a bit in sunlight, you can still read everything on the screen just fine which was a concern before I purchased.

USB input only works with newer iPods (video and newer) but it supports thumbdrives which are much cheaper.

Only thing that would make this unit better would be more customization options such as being able to install your own wall-paper and caching of the song info from USB or CD/DVD so that it wouldn't have to re-read the directory information each time you change inputs. It's only a few seconds delay but it's noticeable.

Installing for a Ford I had to install a voltage regulator into the remote turn-on circuit to prevent loud popping noises from the factory subs. I already had the information to do this, but Crutchfield doesn't provide this information initially, but they have it if you call them.

Would definitely recommend this unit for others or buy it again myself.

      Great Value, Good Sound

Written By Steve, Mountain View, CA on Monday, September 15, 2008

The JVC AVX-810 is definately one of the best units available at the moment, with a great combination of features at a good price.

Firstly, the screen quality is good, with bright vibrant colours that are also adjustable. The touch screen isn't overly sensitive, and the on screen menu's are responsive and easy to use.

Volume can be controlled by either pressing the volume buttons on the bottom of the face, or by rotating your finger around the screen in a circular motion. Ipod control also works pretty well.

Sound quality is very good, coming from a high end Alpine CD player I'm really impressed, and I'd dare say that the sound quality is better on the JVC. I have the dvd player hooked up to a kicker amp and alpine splits and rear speakers, and surround sound is pretty amazing. The 7 band equalizer is easy to adjust using the touchscreen, and you can save a few presets so you have the right sound for different styles of music or movies.

One quirk with the unit is that the detachable face is a great feature, but it also protrudes quite a long way, so make sure you have plenty of clearance if you drive a manual.

I'm really happy with my purchase, so I'd definately recommend this product to anyone after a good value, feature packed dvd player.
