Why should I put a marine receiver on my boat?

Few things are better than relaxing to your favorite music out on the water. Sure, you can put a car stereo in your boat, but a marine receiver is designed to stand up to the damage that humidity, moisture, and salt can cause, so it'll have a much longer life span in your vessel. And today's marine receiver offers all the features you want when you're cruising, including iPod controls, satellite radio capability, and connections for the outboard amps in your system.

Our take on the Sony DSX-MS60

by Ken Nail

Sony's DSX-MS60 marine digital media receiver lets you enjoy the music library on your iPod® out on the water. The receiver's unique Tune Tray stores your iPod high and dry behind the receiver's face, while a special moisture-resistant coating on the circuit board protects the receiver's internal electronics. The upshot? You won't have to worry about damage to your gear from rain, salt, or spray.

Audio control and more
While you're listening to your favorite playlists, you can dial in the perfect balance of mids, lows, and highs with the 3-band equalizer, then use the DM+ controls to add some extra sparkle back into overly compressed music files. If you want to step up the power beyond the receiver's robust built-in amplifier, you'll find the two sets of preamp outputs handy for adding outboard amps or a powered subwoofer.

More listening options
The Tune Tray's USB connection lets you plug in a thumb drive loaded with MP3, WMA, or AAC files, or you can pop your Sony Walkman MP3 player in there with the help of an optional adapter. Experienced sailors tell us how much they love satellite radio — Sony offers a SIRIUS package for this receiver, or you can plug a portable satellite radio into the front aux input. If you're into your local AM/FM radio, you can add Sony's HD Radio tuner to experience the improved fidelity and expanded programming offered by participating stations.

Note: Sony recommends that you remove your iPod from the dock when not operating your boat. If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Marine Rated

Marine Ready: The Sony DSX-MS60 marine-rated digital media receiver is ready for the marine environment with a UV resistant coating and coated circuit board.

Ultraviolet (UV) Resistant Finish: The Sony Marine receiver is specifically designed to withstand the ASTM G154 test for UV resistance. This means the faceplate is treated to resist fading and discoloring after prolonged exposure to UV light.

Anti-Corrosion Coated Circuit Board: The Sony Marine receiver uses conformal coated circuit boards that are safeguarded by HAYA high-humidity resistant vinyl resin.

      Display Features

Detachable Fold-Down Face: The Sony DSX-MS60 digital media receiver features a detachable fold-down face for theft prevention. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The digital media receiver's fold-down face folds-down to access the unit's USB port. A hard plastic face-case included to protect the face-plate when it is detached. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Caution Alarm: If you turn the ignition switch to the Off position without detaching the front-panel, the caution alarm will sound for a few seconds. The alarm will only sound if the built-in amplifier is used.

Fluorescent LCD Display: The 2-line fluorescent LCD display makes it easy to read station and song information. You can adjust the display's contrast (1-7) for a clear view of the LCD, suitable for the installed viewing angle.

Level Meter: This feature shows a level meter on the display when turned on.

Auto Scroll: This feature allows long displayed items to scroll automatically across the display when the track is changed.

Dimmer: You can manually dim the display at night, if desired. You can operate the display dimmer automatically, when the boat's lights are turned on, or manually. If the dimmer is set to automatic, the orange/white wire in the power harness must be connected to the boats's headlight circuit in order to properly work.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button for 1 second will turn off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Auto Off: When installing in a boat without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off all lighting a set amount of time after you turn the power off. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

      Audio Section

True Fidelity Sound Construction: The Sony DSX-MS60 features a newly developed sound processor for less distortion, an S-MOSFET IC for smooth signal transmission, and a large-sized capacitor for deep bass sound.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Sony DSX-MS60 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

CEA2006 Compliant Amplifier: The power specifications for the Sony DSX-MS60 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DSX-MS60 are as follows:

      • Continuous Power Output: 17 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Peak Power Output: 52 watts x 4-channels (208 total watts)

Digital Music Plus Advanced: The Sony DSX-MS60 features Digital Music Plus Advanced which is an enhancer technology used to reproduce detail and high frequency sound from compressed audio.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): The DSX-MS60 features the Dynamic Soundstage Organizer, which uses proprietary circuitry to virtually raise the soundstage and spread it wider across the dash. This is especially helpful if your boat has speakers mounted low in the door panels. There are three levels of DSO, each with an increasing amount of effect.

EQ3 Stage 2: The Sony DSX-MS60 features an EQ3 Stage 2 equalizer with 8 preset equalizer curves for various types of music. You can choose from Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom, or Off. The Off mode provides a flat response. The Custom mode allows you to manually adjust the Low (60 Hz), Mid (1 kHz), and High (10 kHz) frequencies from +/-10dB.

Loudness: This features reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Two Pairs Of 2V Preamp Outputs: The DSX-MS60 contains two pairs of 2-volt RCA preamp outputs - a front pair and another pair that can be set for the rear channels or for subwoofer operation.

Subwoofer Controls: When set to subwoofer, the output becomes non-fading and a low pass filter is activated with a selectable cut-off frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments. In addition, you can select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

High-Pass Filter: The front and rear speaker outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can set the cutoff frequency for the front and rear channels independently or all together.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Radio Functions

SSIR-EXA AM/FM Tuner with RDS: The Sony DSX-MS60 features a built-in SSIR-EXA AM/FM Tuner with RDS. Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations. The DSX-MS60 offers manual, seek and preset tuning.

Radio Data System (RDS): The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

Preset Tuning: The radio features 5 memory bands to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2 (total: 18 FM/12 AM). Preset tuning can be done manually or automatically.

      • Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
      • Manual Tuning: You can manually tune and find your favorite radio stations one by one for FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.

Auto Tuning: You can use the seek button to help you search quickly through the available stations and then choose your own presets from these available stations.

Local Seek Mode: In the Local Seek Mode, the unit will only tune in stations with very strong signals during Seek tuning.

Mono Mode: The Mono Mode allows you improve poor FM reception by selecting a monaural signal instead of a stereo signal.

HD Radio Ready: The DSX-MS60 is compatible with Sony's optional XT-100HD add-on HD Tuner (158XT100HD, sold separately) through its UniLink Bus connection. HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. HD Radio also provides a variety of data, including station name, song title, artist name, album name, etc. Once connected, all AM and FM broadcasts are received by the XT-100HD. HD appears as an additional source, with five preset banks; HD1 (FM1), HD2 (FM2), HD3 (FM3), HD4 (AM1), and HD5 (AM2). In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional satellite radio receiver to this head unit:

      • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SCC1 SiriusConnect Vehicle Tuner and the optional SNYSC1 Sony interface module (package item number 700SIRSONY, sold separately).
      • XM Satellite: To receive XM Satellite Radio connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Tuner and the Sony CNP-SON1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMSON2, sold separately).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

      USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

Tune Tray: The Sony DSX-MS60 digital media receiver features an integrated Tune Tray to securely store your iPod or Walkman MP3 player neatly within the receiver, eliminating loose wires. It even includes a reminder alert, which ensures you don't leave your device behind. You can easily connect, charge, and control your digital music player with a USB 1-wire connection, located within the Tune Tray. This innovative feature displays metadata like song title, artist and track number on your front display when your music is playing. Capacity of the tray: approximately 2.5625" (w) x 0.625" (h) x 4.625" (d); will fit iPod video, classic, touch, and nano. The DSX-MS60 needs approximately 2.5" of open space in front of it for the Tune Tray to open properly.

Note: Do not leave your iPod/iPhone or other USB device inside the Tune Tray on a docked boat, as malfunction may result. Do not place a cellular phone or a device with wireless communication functions on the Tuner Tray, as it may not receive phone signals or communications may be terminated. Due to an increase in the boat's interior temperature, charging of the USB device battery, may not work, depending on the USB device specification

USB Input: The receiver's integrated USB (type-A) input can be used for plugging in a (MSC) Mass Storage Class or MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) type USB device. The head unit can play music files stored on the USB device in MP3, WMA, or AAC formats (up to 320 kbps). When playing a USB device, the display can indicate track/album/artist/genre number, track/artist/album/genre name, elapsed playing time, text information, or clock. The head unit can recognize up to 128 folders with 500 tracks each when connected to a USB MSC or MTP device.

      • Playback Modes:
        • Repeat: repeat a single track or repeat an entire album
        • Random: shuffle all tracks or a specific album
      • Display Information:
        • Numeric Text: track number and elapsed playing time
        • Alphanumeric Text: song title, artist name, and album label

Note: This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub. Not all MP3, WMA, AAC files may playback due to file variations. Copyright protected ACC-LC files cannot be played back.

iPod/iPhone USB 1-Wire Connection: The Sony DSX-MS60 lets you directly connect, charge, and control select iPods or iPhones via the unit's integrated USB input and included adapter (XA-50IP), as well as view metadata like song title and artist on the front display. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit's front-panel USB port (will not work in Tune-Tray). The head unit will allow audio playback, control, and charging of your connected iPod or iPhone.

Note: Any iPhone should be connected to the head unit's front-panel USB port (not the Tune Tray USB port), so you can still receive phone calls. If you plan on placing the iPhone in the Tune Tray, then the iPhone should be set to "Airplane" mode (no phone functionality).

Bypass iPod DAC: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter (bypassing iPod/iPhone DAC), allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 120dB.

Audio Playback: The Sony head unit supports audio playback of music, podcast, and audiobook files stored on your iPod or iPhone.

      Sony DSX-MS60

Written By Bob H, Santa Clarita, CA on Friday, August 31, 2012

The sound from this unit is fantastic...when it works. I have this model installed on my 2012 Harley and within a few days the iPod interface began opperating intermitantly. The cause was diagnosed to an old iPod so I upgraded to a new one. This solved the problem and once again the system worked flawlessly, well until the display began to flicker. Now 4 months old it has completely stopped working. The problem appears to be the flip down faceplate interface to the head unit. I do not recommened this unit for a marine or motorcycle application for this reason.
      Pros:
      iPod shuttle
      Cons:
Controls are complex, too small to used while moving, the detachable faceplate is too fragile with poor connections to the headunit for any use other than inside a car

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Pontoon boat had a Jensen receiver installed when I bought it. After several outings the radio would power off for no reason and then come back on and continue to do this the rest of the day. I finally got fed up and started researching Marine radio's. I decided on the Sony after reading the reviews. I could not believe the difference just a radio could make. I get 75% more radio stations on the water (using the same antenna) compaired to the Jensen and the sound is awesome. I also installed 2 Xfinity speakers at the back of the boat and this radio handles all 6 main speakers and 4 mid-range speakers with no problem.
      Pros:
Looks, i-pod/i-phone docking, sound, ease of operation.
      Cons:
      None

      Very nice radio

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my 2006 Harley Street Glide. It is my third radio but first marine grade so I hope it holds up to the environment. I have it playing through two sets of Polk speakers 6 1/2 & 5 1/4") and a 4 channel Alpine amp 50wt rms and it sounds really good. Nice and clean. Display is really nice nd I actually like the media player over a CD that would skip on bumps in the road.
      Pros:
      Price, features

Afer reading several reviews, I bought this unit to replace the existing Sony unit in my 2000 Cobalt. It took 20 minutes to remove the exisitng unit and install this one. The stereo also fit with the existing wire harness. Not only do my 2 additional control units work, driver seat and swim platform, I now have a remote as well. Charges Iphone as well! Perfect replacement unit!!
      Pros:
Easy fit and install. Great sound and worked with all exisitng hardware!
      Cons:
      NONE

Not a good unit for Boat application

Written By Dave G., Crossville, TN on Monday, July 02, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit doesn't perform well in a boat. Crutchfield was awesome in replacing my 1st one - it would just suddenly power down. Now, in just my 2nd boating season the replacement will lose connection with the contacts on the faceplate. I'll have to press on the faceplate just to lower the volume or change anything. I guess the vibration is just too much but HELLO.... this is a Marine radio. I'm on hold with Crutchfield as I type to see what they will be willing to do. I am definitely looking for a better unit.

What a great radio. I have always been a fan of Sony products, and this one doesn't disapoint. Great sound and easy to use. I installed this on my '01 FLHTPI using a Hog wired mounting bracket and it sounds as good as it looks. Unfortunatly my Ipod took a crap the day after I got this radio and radio signals are far and few from home but the aux input allowed my smart phone to fill in until the ipod could be replaced.
      Pros:
Easy install and friendly controls. When I use the splash cover from Biketronics, the remote in rain gear pocket allows for basic control which is a big bonus.
      Cons:
Felt very lost when my ipod died. It was hard to step away from the reliability of the old discs crammed full of MP3's.

I bought this for my 2006 Harley, Ultra Classic,, I thought I would miss the disc player but all my music is on the Ipod anyway.. Works GREAT !!!! I had to buy a wiring kit from another company so I could keep my handle bar controls. HIGHLY RECOMEND
      Pros:
      Ipod stores inside the radio
      Cons:
      havent really found any yet

As I expected, AWESOME service from the Crutchfield professionals. Good price, great value. This is a very nice head unit. Holds IPhone, IPod touch, or if you prefer, usb storage device (good idea at the lake). Controls are user friendly, and menus are logical. Sound quality is top notch. I normally prefer Alpine, but this one can compete. I have 4 bazooka 6.5 coax speakers running off the head unit, a pioneer 4 channel amp on 2 bazooka tubbies, and an alpine sub amp running 1 mtx 6000 12" sub.
      Pros:
Great sound even without an amp. IPod tray! WHO PLAYS CD's ANYMORE????
      Cons:
Would have prefered more RCA's. Only has 2 sets of outs.

      DSX-MS60 on Harley Road-Glide

Written By KennyMac, South Korea on Friday, April 06, 2012

I replaced my Harley in-dash Harman-Kardon unit with the Sony DSX-MS60 through a control box (Bike-Tronics). The Sony system is by far better, louder quality sound, IPOD and USB hidden storage is a stroke of genius!
      Pros:
Functionality, performance for the money, ease of installation, optional add-on hardware prices eg; XM and Sirius, weather resistance factor and overall aesthetics.
      Cons:
      None

      Loving it!

Written By Scott T., Newcastle.CA on Saturday, February 18, 2012

I bought the stereo to replace my factory deck in my 2000 Cobalt 253. We were looking for something to plug in our iPod, iPad and Droid phone. While our old deck has the CD changer and cassette we no longer use them. I was so surprised to find out that the wiring from my old deck was exactly the same. Everything works. The wired remote in the Cuddy plugs right in allowing us to use the wireless remote while in the cockpit and the wired remote at night. The iPod tray is slick and allows us to control the iPod with the wireless remote which is intuitive and easy to use. Also allows my copilot to manage the tunes while docking. The auxiliary on the front works great for the iPad allowing us to watch a movie while running the sound through the stereo. While most shops felt we needed an additional power amp this things sounds great as is with my six speakers although one might consider a small sub which will plug right in. Great price, easy installation, easy to use and looks great. we couldn't be happier.
      Pros:
Has Everything you need Great for boats
      Cons:
      none

This is one the best marine stereos I have had in my boat for the price. It sounds great, has good bass, and is easy to install and set up. I wasn't sure if i would like the internal IPOD holding station but it works well and the IPOD won't get knocked all over when hitting big waves.

The head unit is good, pretty simple to set up if you already have a Sony system. My only complaint would be that the description online is very vague and I was unaware that the unit did not come with a cd player as well as being a digital media player.

What a great piece! Sound is excellent, power is fine without extra amps for my use but most importantly, the Ipod storage in the unit instead of CD player is brilliant. All my CDs are on my Ipod, so who needs it. Very pleased. Oh and I should mention, this is on a restored 1971 Mahogany ski-boat.

This is a great radio! Power is very good, and it is easy to navigate. Installation was very easy! The ipod storage spot is awesome. Only negative that I have on this radio, is that is does not like older IPOD's. You have to connect them to the aux port on the front of the radio to play them. The newer IPODs play perfectly through the system. I would recommend this radio.

Installed in my Cobalt 262 as a replacement for original factory receiver. Excellent sound quality. MP3 connection is pretty slick. The "tune tray" is behind face plate where a CD player would normally be located. Connection is USB with Ipod adaptor included. Used with Samsung MP3 Player, Ipod and regular memory stick. Worked great with all. The customer service at Crutchfield is excellent. They helped me determine that this unit would be compatible with my factory installed remote. Their suggestion was a perfect fit.
