AudioQuest

Our take on the AudioQuest Type 4

by Ralph Graves

High-value, high-performance speaker cables

AudioQuest's Type 4 speaker cables deliver finely detailed sound from your high-performance audio system. AudioQuest carefully engineered their cables based on years of their own in-house research to transfer signals as cleanly and faithfully as possible.

Cross section

Solid conductors improve accuracy and clarity

Type 4 cables feature four solid, long-grain copper conductors to ensure highly efficient signal transfer with minimal loss. Solid conductors eliminate electrical and magnetic interference that can add brittleness to the sound with multi-strand conductor cables.

Closeup details

Precise cable geometry

These AudioQuest cables use two 17-gauge and two 20-gauge conductors. This difference in diameter reduces the possibility of distortion caused by any particular conductor's sonic "signature." A specialized spiral arrangement of the four conductors minimizes potential signal interaction, resulting in sound that's clearer and more dynamic.

Highlights:

  • speaker cables with pre-attached banana connectors
  • four solid, pure copper conductors
  • two 17-gauge and two 20-gauge for full-range signal transfer
  • conductors arranged in cross pattern to minimize mutual interference
  • current-carrying equivalent of a pair of 15-gauge conductors
  • silver-plated banana plugs
  • textile braid cable cover
  • warranty: 5 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Features

Solid Conductors: All of the AudioQuest, CinemaQuest Type 4 speaker cable conductors are solid. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the single greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat harsh and distorted sound. Solid conductors enable the Type 4 cables to produce very clear sound.

Long-Grain Copper: The Type 4 cable's LGC (Long-Grain Copper) allows a smoother and clearer sound than cables using regular OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper. LGC has fewer oxides within the conducting material, less impurities, less grain boundaries, and provides overall better performance.

4-Cross Geometry: The relationship between conductors defines a cable's most basic electrical values (capacitance and inductance). However, even when those variables are kept in a reasonable balance, the relationship between conductors can be varied in ways that greatly effect the sound. The spiral construction of Type 4 cable allows for significantly better dynamic contrast and information intelligibility than if the same conductors were run in parallel. The specific 4-cross geometry used in Type 4 cables maximizes this advantage.

Insulation: Since the Type 4 cables use solid conductors it doesn't require hard insulation and can take advantage of the vibration damping advantage of a softer insulation.

SST (Spread Spectrum Technology: SST (Spread Spectrum Technology) is a method for significantly reducing distortion flaws by using a precise combination of different size conductors.

Terminations: The Type 4 cable utilizes high quality BFA/Banana connectors that allow the Type 4 cables to be securely attached to your speakers and amplifier. The BFA/Banana connectors are a dull looking silver because its metal is plated directly over the connector itself. There is no shiny and harsh sounding nickel layer underneath to distort your audio signal.

    Audioquest - The Real Deal

Written By Anonymous, Dallas GA on Saturday, February 16, 2013

I have been using boutique speaker wire for a long time. I paid dearly for them too. I decided to try AQ's Pearl HDMI cables after reading that they were the cat sass in What Hi-Fi magazine. I had just gotten a new Plasma TV and blew a wad on it so I didn't have the dead presidents for expensive cables. I bought three of them, hooked them up, and could not believe the performance. This got me thinking about interconnects so I bought the G - Snakes for my CD player and Turntable. Same result - Wow !!! Of course, now I had to try the Type 4's on my Martin Logan Source hybrids. I could not believe the difference ! It was as if someone took blankets off of them. The bass was so much more powerful that I took my 10 inch Velodyne subwoofer off the system. It is collecting dust in the closet now. The soundstage opened up and now I play music at two thirds the previous volume. AQ products helped my system more than I can explain. Expensive? Yes. Worth it ? Yes, oh yes. Solid conductor technology really works and I am sure of it. Buy these with confidence !
    Pros:
Sound, looks, sonic beauty. No break in period that I can tell. Sounded great out of the box.
    Cons:
    None

Thanks to Norm at Crutchfield...a real audio guy who steered me in the right direction. Cables are not voodoo magic but rather what was missing in my system. They highlight tones and sharpen the sound stage. If you can spring for the cash, do it!!
    Pros:
Quality you can see and hear.
    Cons:
    Pricey.

    Type 4 -- Worth it!

Written By Tom, Rochester NY on Saturday, May 26, 2012

When I upgraded my living room speakers to PSB Synchrony Twos, I was still using Audioquest X2 14 gauge speaker wire. Wanted to get as much as I could from my NAD T787 AVR, and was only running 5.2 in that room, so bi-amped with the X2, which gave more depth but for most sources not a huge difference. After a while wondered if stepping up to solid wire like Type 4 would make more of a difference, finally gave it a go bi-wiring. Definite improvement in clarity, especially noticeable in the Synchrony C center, but towers seemed to lose a bit of their punch, so somewhat disappointed. Then decided that if I'd gone this far, might as well finish the job, so bit the bullet and went the bi-AMP route with Type 4.

WOW! Everything came alive and have both the clarity and oomph I was hoping for. Had to re-adjust speaker settings several dbs and use port plugs on the Synchronies because bass output kicked up several notches, though was still very clean. Exceptional sound now from all sources, from NAD 565 CD player to Oppo 93 BluRays, even Cable TV and Airplay streaming via Marantz NA7004 with Apple Lossless files. Funny, my first thought was "now it all finally sounds like it did at the shop!".

Yeah, the cost of cables can get pretty ridiculous, but I love music and it's worth it to me to get as much as I can from my system, even if the individual improvements are subtle, because they add up. I'm now a believer in solid wire designs.
    Pros:
Instant improvement in clarity, especially if bi-wiring -- additional depth if bi-amp
    Cons:
    cost, of course :)

    Definately a difference

Written By Mike, Centreville, VA on Tuesday, March 06, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I hooked these up today and I can definately hear a difference. My signal is more clear and crisp. Looking forward to more testing! I am running a Yamaha RX-V1900 amp into Canton Ergo 80s. For years I have run heavy gauge copper cable as I've always thought more copper is better. I have to say I am impressed. I am going to get another pair for my second system.
    Pros:
Not super expensive. Audioquest sells a pair that costs over $8000 !!
    Cons:
    None yet

Forget the Monster cables. I hooked these up in seconds to my new KLipsch RF-52s...great response. Expensive? Yes and worth every nickel. I think cables and wires are the most over looked componet to a great sounding system.

What a difference a cable makes!

Written By Martin, Chico, CA on Tuesday, March 03, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

About 10 years ago I bought a Yamaha shelf stereo system from Crutchfield (when I still lived in Charlottesville and could buy it in the brick-and-mortar version). It still works and sounds surprisingly well but I am in the middle of upgrading my AV system. I started with new speaker cables, replacing the thin out-of-the-box Yamaha cables with these AudioQuest cables. Wow! I didn't know that that little shelf system could sound so good! The speakers are on Sanus SF22 stands, which already cleaned up the sound. But with these cables the detail, staging, localization and definition has increased enormously. At first I felt a bit silly to spend this much on speaker cables, but when I turned on a CD to hear the results and could not turn off the CD until I had listened and enjoyed it all the way through I knew it was worth it.
