Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Our take on the Klipsch SW-112

by Kristen Schaub

Add intense, accurate bass to your movies and music
The SW-112 easily fills even a large home theater room with deep bass. Plus, it has a clean, neutral appearance that won't clash with your décor. This powerful, high-output subwoofer uses a 300-watt amplifier to drive a strong-yet-light 12" woofer designed for quick, precise movement. The front slot port helps minimize turbulence for clean sound. And since the port is in the front, you won't hear unwanted "boominess" from sound reverberating off your walls and floor. That means you can place this sub just about anywhere and enjoy punchy low-frequency effects.

Highlights:

  • front slot port for reduced turbulence and flexible installation
  • 300-watt RMS BASH® amplifier (continuous power)
  • 12" front-firing woven fiberglass driver
  • frequency response 26-120 Hz (±3dB)
  • variable 50-150 Hz crossover
  • phase switch
  • auto on/off
  • line level/LFE (low frequency effects) input
  • speaker-level inputs
  • compatible with the Klipsch WA-2 wireless audio adapter kit for an easy connection to a sound system
  • 14-3/8"W x 16-3/8"H x 22-1/2"D
  • warranty: 2 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Features

BASH Digital Hybrid Class AB Amplifier: The Klipsch SW-112 powered subwoofer features a highly efficient BASH digital hybrid class AB amplifier which produces reliable, high-powered sound. The built-in amplifier is rated at 300 watts RMS (600 watts Peak). The RMS power rating indicates power available on a continuous, long-term basis. The Peak power rating indicates power available for large, short-term peaks in your music or movie soundtrack.

12" Fiberglass Woofer: The Klipsch SW-112 powered subwoofer features a front-firing 12" non-resonant woven fiberglass driver with a durable rubber surround for tight musical bass.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Klipsch SW-112 utilizes a bass-reflex enclosure with an advanced front-firing slot port to produce tight musical bass. This highly efficient enclosure design produces more output using less energy.

Power LED Indicator: Located on the powered subwoofer's front baffle, this LED indicates the operating status of the unit's built-in amplifier. The LED is off when the amplifier is in standby mode and green when the amplifier is on and receiving a signal.

Rubber Feet: The Klipsch powered subwoofer is equipped with four integrated rubber feet to help prevent against vibration.

Placement: Klipsch powered subwoofers are designed to reproduce deep bass and deliver the impact that makes your movies and music come alive. Typically, optimum performance will result if you place the subwoofer in  a corner of the room on the same wall as your front channel speakers.

    Controls

Gain Control: The gain control of the Klipsch SW-112 adjusts the subwoofer's volume relative to the rest of your home audio system. If the Klipsch powered subwoofer is connected to the Subwoofer Output (LFE) on your AV receiver, first set the subwoofer volume level control in the receiver to the "half-way" or the "0-dB" position. Then increase the gain of the subwoofer until the subwoofer's volume level matches the output of your main speakers. After this setup is completed, the volume control of your AV receiver will be the volume control for both the Klipsch powered subwoofer and your connected loudspeakers.

Lowpass Crossover: The Klipsch SW-112 powered subwoofer features a variable lowpass crossover which is adjustable from 50-150Hz. The crossover point chosen determines where low bass frequencies are "handed-off" from your AV system's loudspeakers to the Klipsch powered subwoofer. Set the crossover point based on the size of your systems' main left/right speakers. As a general rule, for larger, floor-standing speakers, set the crossover point between 50-90Hz. If using small bookshelf or satellite speakers for your mains, set the crossover point between 90-150Hz. The smaller the speaker, the higher the setting until the bass frequencies blend well between the loudspeakers and the Klipsch powered sub. If setting the crossover point in the receiver, turn the Lowpass Filter knob on the subwoofer to the farthest point right (150Hz).

Phase: The Klipsch SW-112 powered subwoofer has an adjustable phase control which can be set between 0° and 180°. This control is used to acoustically match the subwoofer's output to your system's main speakers. Select a position between 0° and 180°, in which the subwoofer has more output at your main listening position.

Power Auto/On/Off: The Klipsch powered subwoofer features a 3-way power switch. This is the main AC power switch for the subwoofer. This switch must be in the "On" position for the subwoofer to operate or the "Auto" position for the Auto-On feature to function. Set this switch to the "Off" position if the subwoofer will not be used for an extended period of time. When this switch is in the "Auto" position, the subwoofer will automatically turn on when it senses a signal. It will automatically turn off after 20 minutes with no signal.

    Connections

Line-Level Input: The Klipsch SW-112 powered subwoofer is equipped with a pair of line-level RCA-type inputs. Most of today's AV receivers have a line-level subwoofer output (LFE) labeled Subwoofer Pre Out, Sub Out, or SW Out. If your receiver has this output, connect on end of a subwoofer cable to it and connect the other end of the cable into the powered subwoofer's line-level input labeled "LEFT/LFE". This connection allows the subwoofer to operate with both music and surround sound movies. In absence of a subwoofer (LFE) output on your receiver, as an alternative hookup, you can connect Left & Right channel pre-amp outputs from a receiver to the "Left/LFE" and "Right" input on the powered subwoofer.

Speaker-Level Inputs: If your AV receiver does not have an LFE out or subwoofer preamp output, you can connect the Klipsch subwoofer to the receiver via speaker-level connection, using the powered subwoofer's 5-way binding posts. Using 16-gauge or larger speaker wire, connect the Red 'positive' (+) terminal of the AV receiver's Left channel to the Red (+) terminal of the subwoofer's Left speaker-input channel. Connect the Black 'negative' (-) terminal of the AV receiver's Left channel to the Black (-) terminal of the subwoofer's Left speaker-input channel. Repeat this procedure for connecting your AV receiver's Right channel input. The terminals on the AV receiver used to connect the powered subwoofer will be the same terminals used to connect the AV receiver to your main speakers.

Note: Take care that no bare wires from any of the connection touch any other terminals, or each other, as this could damage your equipment.

WA Port (optional): The Klipsch powered subwoofer is fitted with a proprietary 4-pin "WA-Port" connector for wireless operation, using Klipsch's optional WA-2 wireless subwoofer kit (714WA2, sold separately). The Klipsch WA-2 wireless subwoofer kit consists of two components; a wireless Transmitter & wireless Receiver. The WA-2 wireless subwoofer kit makes adding the Klipsch powered subwoofer to your home theater system much easier, because it replaces the need for a separate subwoofer cable that traditionally must be connected between the receiver and the powered sub. Now, you can easily place your powered subwoofer where it both sounds and looks best in the room since you're not restricted by an audio cable.

    Took a chance and WOW!

Written By ToddS, Interior Alaska on Thursday, April 25, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decided to take a chance on this sub based on reviews. The JL Audio 12W7 is in my opinion the best sub there is (but so expensive). With that being said, for a fraction of the price the SW-112 comes impressively close and it doesn't need 1500w to do it. This sub plays lower than most other powered subs that I've heard out there, period. But yet it stays tight all the way up to my 80hz crossover point. And the best part is that it does it at extreme levels.
    Pros:
Plays low and stays tight up top. Lots of SPL.
    Cons:
    None.

Wow - Keeps getting better and better

Written By Alan P., Greensboro, NC. on Friday, April 19, 2013

I had beed reading all the Great Reviews on the RW-12 (which they don't make anymore) and wanted one. I ran across this SW-112 at a Great price and decided to give it a try. I was not positive that I had made the right choice at first but...... as a couple of weeks passed - now I AM Positive that this IS the Sub I want. It keeps getting better and better everytime I jam on it. Loads of Power and just sounds amazing. Highly Recommend this SW-112!
    Pros:
Loads of Power, Sounds Great, Looks Great, Fair price. What else can I ask for!
    Cons:
I do wish there were controlls on the top front. I do end up adjusting for different kinds of music, etc. but not really a problem - just a suggestion.

Plenty of room shaking bass from this speaker. I highly recommend going with a 12" sub if you got room for it.

If you love BASS, you will love this powered sub!! I listen to House, Rap, R & B, and all the rest. All you need to do is match the the sub settings to your system, its pretty dam easy. I have 2 Infinity Primus P362 tower speakers, this sub completes the system it gets all the lows that the infinity's can't then SOME!! This shit is quality!! It just seems like every time I turn my system on this thing sounds better and better.

Best Subwoofer I've Ever Owned, By Far

Written By ChuckC, Fort Wayne, IN on Thursday, July 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not a prolific review writer, but this is one I wouldn't miss. I went through four (4) other name-brand subwoofers for my home theater system, including good name brand products from Polk Audio & Infinity. They all eventually wound up on Ebay. Used with a Yamaha amplifier, none of them gave me the CLARITY of base that this Klipsch has given me. While admittedly not inexpensive, how much would I have saved had I gone to this unit first? All the other subwoofers gave me earth-shaking, furniture-rattling base, but much of it was a raspy, muddy base at higher base levels. They just couldn't seem to deal with those strong spikes that some movies or music produce at certain times. Ths Klipsch handles it ALL with ease and never chokes during those intense levels. I daresay that the base this unit produces is "beautiful" and greatly enhances my home theater experience. Don't go what I went through over the course of several years. Spend the bit extra now and go for this one first. You'll save money in the long run and will enjoy the beauty a good subwoofer is supposed to produce in the process.
    Pros:
Good clear base at all levels at all times No choke points Has a nice "auto-off" feature with a small green LED on the upper right of the unit that shows through the front mesh cover and turns the unit off after 10 minutes of non use (senses no signal). I love this auto-turnoff feature and the ability to see that it's actually on when being used.
    Cons:
A bit pricey but well worth it, hands down.

    Tuning is Everything

Written By DWM, Cambridge, MD on Tuesday, June 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub as a replacement for comparable Infinity sub and in my opinion, it's without question a superior sub. I just hope it lasts longer before the amp gives out. It's important to note that it did not reach it's full-acoustical potential until optimally tuned, which took several hours of testing and adjusting while listening to a variety of source material. Probably the most notable difference is that I was able to set my low pass at around 100HZ, whereas I couldn't set it above 50HZ with the Infinity. The Infinity tended to sound somewhat muddy when set any higher, at least to my ears it did. The benefit of a higher loss pass setting is a fuller and more evenly distributed lower frequencies vis-a-vis my bookshelf front and center channel speakers.. (Harmon Kardon AVR 2600 Receiver and Infinity Primus Series Surround Speakers)
    Pros:
Auto On, Green Front-side Power LED, Low Profile Cabinet
    Cons:
    None

    my limited knowledge

Written By Robert B, Hilo, Hawaii on Monday, January 30, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did not purchase my system based on my knowledge. The store recommended the components I purchased. I was impressed with the sound and the feel of my system from the start, but never had anything of it's Caliber to compare it to. That is the main reason when my sub-woofer quit, I looked for the exact replacement. Based on what I had, your salesman (Axel) agreed with my choice and I have no regrets other then the new SW-112 is in housing size is a bit smaller and doesn't have the second dummy speaker in rear and doesn't have quite the punch that the original had though the original is no longer made.I love it! And, I really liked dealing with Axel and his professional manner. I also was happy with the delivery time. Thankyou and I look foreword to future dealings with your company and I do and will recommend you to my friends!
    Pros:
I think I made my pro's in my comments.
    Cons:
The on/ off switch is on the rear making it a little harder to reach it. Maybe a front switch is possible?
