Yamaha

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than a boombox or iPod® speaker. On the other hand, you want something that's far less complex than a surround sound system. Then you'll find your sweet spot in a classic stereo receiver. Or maybe one from the new breed that includes Internet radio or other network music options. Add two speakers (and another music source, if you like), and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. It might even be all you really need for TV sound.

Our take on the Yamaha R-S500

by Marshall Chase

Yamaha delivers a high-quality stereo receiver with the R-S500. This receiver was designed with the music listener in mind, offering inputs for a CD player, a turntable, a tape deck and more. You will find knobs to control volume, bass, treble, and balance. The R-S500 has a continuously variable loudness control, so you can hear all the detail in your favorite music at even the lowest volume. There's also a Pure Direct mode for your CD player so the music comes through with clarity rarely heard on a standard stereo.

Going beyond the classic

The R-S500 is sure to please anyone who loves their music from traditional sources, but it also takes a leap into the new millennium. Optional add-ons let you enjoy iPod® and SIRIUS satellite radio. Plus second zone capability means that you can listen to all of your favorites in another room. There's also a line-level output so you can add a powered sub to bring out the deep bass that most home speakers can't reproduce.

Highlights:

  • 75 watts x 2 (stereo) into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.04% THD
  • 4-ohm capability allows use with a wide range of speakers

Audio Features

ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance.

High-Quality Power Amplifier: With 75 watts of power per channel (at 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.04% THD), the R-S500 delivers solid, reliable audio performance even when driving both A and B speakers at the same time.

Wide Frequency Response: The receiver's wide frequency response, 10Hz to 50kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of any source with two channel analog outputs.

Dual Zone Capability: The R-S500 allows you to play two different sources in two zones. The receiver has a pair of stereo preamp outputs for Zone 2. A separate amplifier or stereo receiver with a pair of speakers, or a powered speaker system is required for zone 2.

Loudness: The amount of loudness compensation is adjustable, using a rotary knob on the front panel.

Pure Direct: The Pure Direct feature bypasses the bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls for the best sound from any source.

Record Out Selector: Front panel rotary knobs let you listen to one source, while feeding a different source to the Tape and Line 1 outputs for recording.

Speaker Terminals: All of the receiver's speaker terminals are binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.

Bi-Wire: Compatible speakers can be bi-wired using the A and B speaker terminals simultaneously (they are wired in parallel).

Impedance Switch: The R-S500 has an impedance switch, allowing operation with two pair of 6 ohm speakers.

Phono: The RCA phono input is designed for moving magnet (MM) turntable cartridges. If you have a moving coil (MC) cartridge a phono preamp is necessary.

Subwoofer Output: The stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-subwoofer output for connecting a powered sub.

Headphone Jack: The receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel for private listening. When headphones are plugged in, the receiver's speaker output is not muted, so remember to turn the A and B speakers off.

Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the maximum volume level; used to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -89.5 dB to +16.5 dB).

Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to specify the volume level when the power is turned on; choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -89.5 dB to + 16.5 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

Power Management: The power (main room and Zone 2) can be set to turn off after a specific amount of time without any adjustments being made; options include 4, 8, or 12 hours.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the receiver off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Remote Control

RAX25 Remote Control: The remote control can operate the receiver as well as other remote control capable components from Yamaha and other manufacturers. The remote is pre-programmed with control signals for other brand TVs, VCRs, DVD player/recorders, Blu-ray disc players, DVRs, cable boxes, and satellite receivers, along with Yamaha CD player/recorders, MD player/recorders, tape decks, and LD players.

Remote Jack: The receiver a mini-jack input and output for use with other compatible components.

Add-on Devices

Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: An optional SiriusConnect Home Tuner kit (item number 607SCH1 or 220SCH2P, sold separately) can be connected to the R-S500, allowing you to listen to Sirius Satellite Radio through the receiver. You can search Sirius stations by Channel, Category or Direct Tuning and up to 40 presets can be memorized. You can also change what Sirius information appears on the receiver's display; choose from Channel Name, Channel Number, Category Name, Artist Name or Song Title.

Note: In addition to a SiriusConnect tuner, you will need a subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio to receive programming.

iPod Dock: With the optional YDS-12 iPod Dock (item number 022YDS12, sold separately), you can connect your compatible iPod or iPhone to the R-S500 and control audio playback using the remote control. The YDS-12 is Made for iPod and Works with iPhone compliant and supports the following iPod model functions (as of 9/10/2012):

Yamaha R-S500

Written By Bill J, Euclid Ohio on Wednesday, April 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great Receiver. I bought this unit because of the variable loudness control. It does make a difference. I use Boston VR-6 speakers for the left and right channel. And a Boston XB-4 Subwoofer. I set the loudness control to the 7 o clock position and leave the Bass and Treble set on flat. With these settings I get great sound. I also discovered I do not need to use the subwoofer. That is due to the loudness control. If you don't have good speakers the receiver can't perform properly.
Pros:
Easy to use. No need to go into a menu to alter the sound. It's all up front. The remote control is simple to use and has clearly marked buttons. Also my thanks to the Crutchfield Team.
Cons:
No Cons. It works as advertised with no unexpected problems.

R-S500

Written By Bob, Mineola, NY on Wednesday, March 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great stereo receiver for the money. If you want basic stereo features with simple functional controls and connections, this is a great buy. I'm using it to drive an old pair of bose 501's and a second pair of 161's, the amp does just fine at higher levels. I use the zone 2 output for a pair of sennheisser 180 wireless headphones. The addition of a Sirius tuner was a definite must at the price (plus annual subscription). Plenty of input connections for just about any audio need. The FM tuner seems to do a good job of pulling in stations. I'd recommend this receiver to anyone that wants a reasonably priced way to enjoy stereo.
Pros:
Sirius capable, lots of source inputs, zone 2 function, good bang for the buck.
Cons:
No internet capability, if you want it. The pure direct button turns off the display - should be a function of the display dimmer.

Great product!

Written By GaryB, Katy, Tx. on Tuesday, February 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My old JVC had some issues and i wanted just a stereo receiver instead of a surround unit because most media is broadcast in stereo, and all of the music i listen to is also, so i needed a receiver with some punch to power my mid-70's 12" 3- way speakers, the yamaha R-S500 woke up my old speakers, the JVC had more wattage and sounded pretty good, but the yamaha really sounds much better and i still have plenty if adjustability, blows the windows out! A note to Anon of Boise, there is a energy saver switch on the back of the unit, if you don't change the volume, or anything for a certain amount of time, the unit will shut off, just switch it to off, i had the same problem and thought i had switched it off while setting up, after looking at trouble shooting in the manual, i checked and thats all it was, hope that helps.
Pros:
Great unit for picky household listeners.
Cons:
None that i can find.

Great Stereo

Written By JR, Port Charlotte, FL on Saturday, January 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have owned Yahama audio component products since 1985. Old receiver finally "died" this year. Received the new one in excellent shape. Did not take long to set up receiver and it sounds great! Features are excellent and easy to use. Crutchfield has doe a great job of investigating, testing and and procuring excellent products for the consumer.

Approved by this seasoned Audiophile

Written By Dave H, Omaha, NE on Friday, December 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a long time audio buff having had various tube and solid state audio components since the early 70's. I have a larger main audio system with some older Magneplanars and I play LP records as well as SACDs. My current need was to find a good sounding 2 chennel receiver to power a pair of 20 year B&W speakers I recently acquired. I was very pleasantly surprised how detailed these speakers sound driven by this Yamaha receiver. The receiver features most important to me were: Yamaha's general audio reputation, the tone control bypass feature and the phono preamp. The loudness control seems to be just a second attenuator in series with the volume control with no affect on tonal balance. I would delete it. However, I am very happy with the unit and would recomment it.on the basis of providing high quality sound.
Pros:
Easy to use front panel controls (can accomplish most tasks without the remote) and good FM sensativity and quieting, Good sound in general.
Cons:
Volume control knob is large but is a thinwall hollow plastic shape similar to a cap on a plastic milk jug.

Great!

Written By Senjo, Ringwood, OK on Monday, December 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this amp! Meets all my needs! The sound is great! The switch to record from one channel while listening to another is a great feature. The finish is awesome looking! I had an old Pioneer 50 watts per channel & it seemed to be as loud but I have this in a small room. It gets loud enough to make your ears ring!
Pros:
Everything you would expect from Yamaha! CRUTCHFIELD!

Yamaha R-S500

Written By MikeS, Greensboro, NC on Tuesday, December 04, 2012

Awesome piece of equipment!! The sound is so clean and powerful compared to the 5.1 channel Sony receiver I replaced it with. Half the THD (0.019) vs. a comparable receiver (0.04) and it goes sooooo loud.
Pros:
Power and elegant design. The Pure Direct setting overides the balance and tone controls so that you hear the music exactly how it was recorded.
Cons:
Hard to see the little dash on the volume control. Should be an LED on the dial so you avoid blasting your neighbors out of bed. Also wish Crutchfield sold the separate tuner to go with it. They sell the matching CD player but not the tuner. Come on Crutch.

Yamaha R-S500

Written By Anon, Boise, ID on Tuesday, April 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought an "open box" Yamaha R-S500 and it arrived on-time and in perfect cosmetic condition with all accessories. The receiver is easy to set up and controls are intuitive. Connecting to components is flexible. FM requires an external antenna, or you get virtually nothing and I live in a city. The receiver sounds great, has virtually no background noise, and has plenty of power for my multiroom system although I am using the useful Zone 2 feature to drive a separate small amplifier for outside speakers that aren't a part of my Niles speaker switch. I do not have it connected to a subwoofer. Now the negative part: even when the receiver is at low volume for background music with only two speakers, it can unexpectedly shut off, with no power surges or other power interruption. May have to return it for that problem, but otherwise a great receiver.
Pros:
Great Crutchfield communication and delivery. Appreciated the online advice about multi-room speaker arrangements. The Yamaha R-S500 is easy to set-up, use and sounds great. The Zone 2 feature is major plus for multi-room flexibility.
Cons:
The Yamaha R-S500 does not have a 12V trigger, and my unit occasionally switches off without provocation. The remote is somewhat complex, but not required for most daily functions.

Yamaha R-S500

Written By Tim, Seattle,Wa on Friday, December 03, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pros:
Controls and display well done
Good sound quality
Phono input

Cons:
No trigger output for sub-woofer (only the R_S700 has it)
No sub-woofer equalizer

Be careful if you download the manual. I was fooled thinking that there was a
trigger output. The manual covers both the S500 and the S700.

The sub-woofer output is completely useless. As far as I can tell, they are
combining the left and right signals and maybe applying a low pass filter. Hard
to say as there is nothing in the manual that describes the sub-woofer output
signal. The specifications do not list the sub-woofer output.
If a sub-woofer is important to you, skip over this unit.

I ended up using my own home-built sub-woofer equalizer connected to the TAPE
REC outputs as the signal is too low from the sub-woofer output.

If I could do it again, I would get something else.
