Sony

Our take on the Sony KDF-50E2000

by Steve Kindig
Get High-Def Programming

Sony's 2006 Grand Wega TVs include subtle improvements on the inside, while retaining the attractive, compact cabinet with the speakers barely visible below the screen. People who never thought they'd own a 50" TV will find that the KDF-50E2000 delivers big-screen impact and excitement without dominating the room.

Grand Wegas are the best-selling rear-projection TVs because they provide a dependably fine picture. Sony gets the color right by using three high-definition LCD image chips, one for each of the primary colors: red, green, and blue. The combination of vibrant color and million-pixel precision produces images that are both life-sized and lifelike. HDTV programs and DVD movies look spectacular, while lower-quality signals are digitally "upconverted" to near-HD quality. You can even fine-tune the amount of enhancement to suit each video source.

Sony's innovative "dynamic iris" feature improves contrast and black level by automatically reducing the TV's light output in dark scenes. A circuit continuously samples the brightness content of the video signal and adjusts the iris opening on the fly. Brightness, contrast, and black level are fine-tuned scene by scene for a beautifully balanced picture.

The KDF-50E2000 has a built-in tuner for receiving local over-the-air HDTV broadcasts. Two HDMI inputs also make it easy to connect an HD satellite receiver or high-definition disc player. These extra-versatile inputs can accept a PC connection, too. Plus, you get three component video inputs, including a convenient side-mounted set for a game console or HD camcorder.

    Features

HDTV: The Sony KDF-50E2K Grand Wega Rear Projection LCD TV has a built-in ATSC tuner that will receive over-the-air and cable High Definition signals without the need for a separate DTV set-top box. With its HD-compatible component video and HDMI inputs, the TV can also display programs in High Definition from high-end DVD players and set-top boxes. In addition, the TV also includes an NTSC tuner for analog broadcasts, and a QAM digital cable tuner.

Native Resolution: The KDF-50E2K has a native resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels with a 130-degree horizontal and 60-degree vertical viewing angle.

3 LCD Panels: The 3LCD technology provides a bright picture, with high detail and natural color. The TV uses three tiny LCD chips (0.73") with a combined resolution of over 2.76 million pixels. The light from a high output UHP lamp shines into a filtering system that splits the beam into red, green, and blue light streams. Each color goes through its own LCD chip, which passes or blocks the light. The three beams are then instantaneously recombined and sent to the projection lens. This provides an incredibly detailed picture with vivid color.

Optical Engine: The Sony optical engine provides a high-resolution picture from corner to corner across the entire screen. It also renders an image with high-brightness utilizing an ultra high pressure 100W lamp (Model XL-2400) that you can easily replace. The TV also utilizes a high performance, large diameter hybrid projection lens (F2.4).

WEGA Engine System: The WEGA Engine system is the core video processing system that was designed to bring cutting-edge picture quality to your Sony TV. Its fully digital signal-processing path includes video processing functions that have been designed and optimized to improved overall picture quality for your Sony rear projection LCD. The WEGA Engine System includes the following:

    • High-speed A/D (analog-to-digital) converters for wide-range gradation capture of analog signals
    • 3-D Y/C Comb Filter for minimizing cross color and dot structure artifacts
    • Digital MPEG Noise Reduction Circuit, which reduces MPEG artifact such as "block noise" and "mosquito nosie" caused by the compression used to maximize bandwidth in digital broadcasts
    • Digital Temporal 3-D Noise Reduction (pixel-by -pixel basis)
    • Digital Motion Adaptive I/P (interlace-to-progressive), as well as Edge Adaptive I/P deintrlacing conversion, which improves resolution in video with motion.

Advanced Iris: Advanced Iris is a special function designed to improve brightness and contrast expression especially in darker scenes. It is accessed inside the Picture Menu and offers 2 Auto settings and 3 Manual settings. Auto 1 and Auto 2 are dynamic adjustments that automatically open and close the iris according to the gamma level of the picture on the screen. Auto 1 is best used for viewing video content that has a large variation in brightness from scene to scene. Auto 2 is best for viewing video content that has less variation in brightness from scene to scene. The 3 manual settings (High, Medium and Low) can be used to adjust the iris opening to allow the best possible picture viewing depending on ambient room lighting conditions. For instance, High works well for viewing in brightly lit rooms. Low is a good setting for viewing in low light conditions.

CineMotion 3/2 Pulldown Processing: This function provides an optimized display by automatically detecting film content and applying a reverse 3/2 pulldown process. Moving pictures will appear clearer and more natural-looking.

HDMI and PC Connectivity: Designed for maximum versatility, the rear projection LCD is equipped with a comprehensive range of input interfaces. The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI technology supports enhanced or High Definition video, together with digital audio to provide matchless image and sound reproduction. PC connectivity is also accommodated via HDMI so now you can use your Sony rear projection LCD TV with your PC.

MENU: The MENU screen gives you access to the following options:

    • Favorites: lets you store and view up to 16 of your favorite programs
    • Cable: takes you to the most recently viewed channel on the cable input
    • Antenna: takes you to the most recently viewed channel on the antenna input
    • External Inputs: lets you select equipment that is connected to your TV
    • Settings: lets you adjust the Video, Audio, Screen, Channel, Parental Control, Setup, and Applications menus

TV Wide Screen Modes: You can select a default screen mode to use for 4:3 sources. While watching a channel, you can use the Wide Mode button to cycle through the wide screen modes. If the 4:3 Default is set to anything but Off, the wide screen mode setting changes only for the current channel. When you change channels, the wide mode is automatically replaced with the 4:3 Default setting. You can choose from the following screen wide screen mode options:

    • Wide Zoom: enlarges the center portion of the picture and stretches the left and right edges to fill the screen
    • Normal: returns the 4:3 picture to normal mode with side bars to fill the screen
    • Full: enlarges the 4:3 picture horizontally only to fill the wide screen
    • Zoom: enlarges the 4:3 picture horizontally and vertically to an equal aspect ratio that fills the screen

PC Wide Mode: You can select between the following settings.

    • Normal: displays the picture in its original size
    • Full 1: enlarges the picture to fill the display area, keeping its original aspect ratio
    • Full 2: enlarge the picture to fill the display area
    • Zoom: enlarge the picture horizontally and vertically to an equal aspect ratio that fills the wide screen
    • Auto Wide: automatically switches the wide mode based on the input signal

Picture Mode: You can quickly and easily change picture settings with one of the following Picture Modes.

    • Vivid: enhances picture contrast and sharpness
    • Standard: standard picture quality
    • Custom: displays a picture with minimum enhancements

Color Temperature Control: You can choose from four color temperatures.

    • Cool: gives the white colors a blue tint
    • Neutral: gives the white colors a neutral tint
    • Warm 1 or Warm 2: select to give the white colors a red tint

DRC Modes: Unlike conventional line doublers, the DRC Multifunction feature replaces the signal's NTSC waveform with the HD equivalent, while doubling the number of vertical and horizontal lines. This results in four times the density for quality sources, such as DVD, satellite and digital camcorders. You can choose from the following DRC advanced video options:

    • High Density: creates a high-resolution picture with 4x density for high quality sources, such as a DVD player or satellite receiver
    • Progressive: recommended for still images
    • DRC Palette: lets you customize the level of detail (Reality) and smoothness (Clarity).

Steady Sound: This feature stabilizes the volume level, preventing unwanted blasts of sound during commercials.

Sound Mode: There are three Sound Modes that you can choose from to set bass and treble.

    • Dynamic: enhances treble and bass
    • Standard: suitable for spoken dialog
    • Custom: flat setting which you can independently go in and change the bass and treble settings to your preference

TruSurround XT: This feature adds a three-dimensional sound to stereo programs using just the television speakers.

BBE: The BBE circuit adjusts the phase relationships of the low, mid and high frequencies. The result is improved sound with more impact.

A/V Sync: You can use this option to make adjustment to audio and video synchronization when you have external equipment connected to the digital out of the TV.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes.

Timers: This unit has two timers that can be set by day, time, duration, and channel to turn the TV "On" and "Off".

Program Guide: This TV is equipped to show program information if it is available from the station. The Program Guide lets you review program information, and select both analog and digital channels.

Parental Control: The Parental Lock settings include the following options:

    • Off: no programs are blocked
    • Child: TV-Y, TV-G, G are the maximum ratings permitted
    • Youth: TV-PG, PG are the maximum rating permitted
    • Young Adult: TV-14, PG-13 are the maximum ratings permitted
    • Custom: allows you manually set ratings for movies and TV broadcasts based on chart listed in the TV manual

Optional TV Stand: The TV can be mounted on the optional Sony SU-RG12L stand (item # 158SURG12L).

    Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other Sony A/V components. You can also program the remote to work other manufacturers' A/V equipment. The following A/V equipment can be operated using this remote from select manufacturers listed in the manual.

    • DVD players/changers, DVD/VCR combos, HDD/DVD combos, DVR, Blu-ray DVD
    • DVD AV system, AV receiver, VCRs
    • Cable boxes, Satellite receivers

Jump Button: The Jump button allows you to jump back and forth between the current channel and the last channel that was selected.

Freeze Button: The Freeze button allows you to temporarily capture a program's picture.

    Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI Inputs: The TV features two HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) input that provide an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface between the TV and any HDMI-equipped device, such as a DTV set-top box, DVD player or A/V receiver. HDMI supports enhanced or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio. You can also connect a DVI-equipped device to the TV via an HDMI-DVI adapter cable. Since a DVI connection does not output audio, you will also need to connect an audio cable from the DVI-equipped device to the TV. One of the HDMI inputs have a left and right RCA audio input. You can also use this HDMI input for your PC so you can use the TV as a computer monitor.

Component Video Inputs: The three component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals. There is two component video inputs on the rear panel and one on the left side panel.

Audio Out: The TV has a rear-panel audio output, which consists of left and right RCA audio jacks. Using the menu, you can choose Fixed or Variable audio output. The audio jacks are only operable when the TV's built-in speakers are turned off.

Optical Output: You can use the TV's optical digital audio output to connect a Dolby Digital/PCM-compatible digital audio device, such as an audio amplifier.

Side Panel Inputs: For connecting a game console or camcorder, the TV includes side panel inputs (left and right RCA audio jacks, RCA composite video jack, and component video jacks). For mono audio connections, you should use the left channel input.

    Great Value in 720P

Written By Larry, Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday, June 12, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All of this started with my wife wanting a new TV for the bedroom. I looked at LCD & Plasma TV’s but kept coming back to RPTV, as we own a Samsung 61” DLP 1080P set in our home theatre and just love it! I wanted 2 RF inputs to hook-up unscrambled cable & a HDTV Antenna for over the air HD reception. This one requirement narrowed my choices dramatically. I kept coming back to the Sony due to the amount of features for the dollar.

We watch this TV from about 8’ and the picture is solid…I can notice a difference in PQ to our Samsung; however, this TV cost us $1,500 less. The standard sound from the built-in speakers is not bad.

The QAM tuner is outstanding & picked-up more channels than the Samsung TV. The over the air tuner is very capable but not quite as good as the Samsung (might be the location in our house).

My only concern (so far) is the amount of negative feedback on the various AVS forums regarding Sony RPTV’s Optical Block failures and the lack of response from Sony as well as the cost of the repair if this unit needs to be replaced out of warranty ($1200). Also, I noticed that Sony gives an extended 2-year warranty on the optical block only (No Labor) and that tells me they are still having problems. So, I am strongly considering buying a 5-year warranty before the first 60 days of ownership expires for the peace of mind. If you are reading this review and are considering purchasing this TV, PLEASE buy from Crutchfield. This is the best place, period! This was my 8th purchase since 11/2006 and I will not go anywhere else. Great information on this site with a concern for the customer.

    Quality Television

Written By JEJ, Charlottesville, VA on Monday, December 04, 2006

Did a lot of researching before buying and I am very happy with this purchase. This tv has a great picture with lots of options. The sound is decent but with so many inputs and outputs a home theatre system makes it that much better. It looks great with standard cable but a HD signal is simply awesome. You have to tweak the settings but once you figure it out, the picture is awesome, especially HD, DVD's and XBOX360.

    You Can't Go Wrong....

Written By Larry, Chocolatetown, PA on Sunday, December 03, 2006

Great 50" picture at a reasonable price. How can you go wrong? Outstanding colors with a beautifully clear picture. Enough inputs to suit almost everyone. I like the 2 HDMI slots. I have a cable box, DVD player, and my sons 2 gaming systems hooked in and still have room for more. The only negative that I have noticed is that if you are impatient, the warm-up time might drive you crazy. The set usually takes 20-25 seconds before you will see a picture. In my opinion, a small price to pay for the outstanding picture quality.
