Denon

Our take on the Denon DP-300F

by Ralph Graves

Still cherish your vinyl record collection? Treat yourself to warm sound with Denon's DP-300F turntable. Its precision die-cast aluminum platter ensures stable rotation for rock-solid playback. The tonearm features adjustable balance and anti-skating controls for proper tracking. And its sturdy base minimizes the vibrations that can compromise sound quality.

Automatic playback with manual control
Fully automatic operation makes the DP-300F easy to use. With the touch of a button, the tonearm swings over and begins playing your record, returning to its original position when finished. The manual lifter mechanism lets you accurately place the stylus on the record wherever you want without scratching.

Switchable phono preamp for hookup flexibility
DP-300F features a built-in phono preamp that lets you connect the turntable to an ordinary auxiliary input on your receiver or audio system. But if your receiver has a dedicated phono input, and you'd prefer to use it, you can switch off the preamp.

  • aluminum platter

    Features
    Controls and Dimensions

    Features

Overview: The DP-300F is a fully automatic turntable that is powered by a DC servo motor with a belt drive system. The turntable is designed to work with dedicated phono inputs and standard line level inputs, so it can be used with almost any receiver or preamp.

Heavy Base Construction: The heavy base construction improves performance by reducing the amount of vibration transmitted through the turntable.

Removable Tonearm Headshell: A removable headshell makes cartridge replacement simple. Allows for any standard mount cartridge between 5 to 10 grams to be mounted and balanced.

Automatic Startup: The automatic startup feature allows the turntable to begin play with the touch of a button. Once play has been completed, the tonearm will return to the armrest, so the stylus and record are not damaged or scratched.

Rigid Diecast Aluminum Turntable: The diecast aluminum platter produces uniform rotation for smooth flutter free operation.

Manual Operation: The turntable includes a manual lifter mechanism that allows you to place the needle on the record wherever you want.

Built-in RIAA Phono Equalizer Preamp: The built-in phono equalizer preamp allows you to connect the turntable to an integrated amp or receiver that does not have a dedicated phono input. This is a feature that can be turned off when using a receiver with a phono input.

Note: The equalizer switch is set to the "ON" position from the factory.

33-1/3 and 45 RPM Compatible: The turntable will play at 33-1/3 and 45 rpm speeds. An adapter is included for playing 45 rpm records.

MM Cartridge Included: The DP-300F comes with a MM (Moving Magnet) cartridge, so you can  begin to enjoy your record collection as soon as you take it out of the box.

Attached Output Cables: The turntable has a hardwired output cable with left and right male RCA plugs. These can plug directly into your receiver or amplifier. There is no need for additional patch cables.

    Controls and Dimensions

    Controls:

    • Start Button: Starts playback.
    • Stop Button: Stops playback.
    • Size Button: Set according to size of the record (17/30).
    • Speed Button: Set according to speed of the record to be played (45/33).
    • Lifter Lever: Manually lifts and lowers arm.
    • Anti-Skating Knob: Set to the same value as the cartridge's stylus pressure.
    • Stylus Pressure Adjustment Ring: The appropriate stylus pressure for the included cartridge is 2.0g. Set to "2".
    • Counterweight: Should be set to the appropriate stylus pressure for the cartridge used.
    • Equalizer Switch: Set to "ON" if receiver does not have a phono input, Set to "OFF" if receiver has a phono input.

    Dimensions:

    • Turntable with Dust cover closed: H = 4.797", W = 17.093", D = 15''
    • Turntable with Dust cover open: H = 15.203", W = 17.093", D = 16.297"
    • Power Cord: Length = 6'
    • Hardwired RCA Cable: Length = 42''

    Great turntable for the price

Written By platypusjones, Philadelphia, PA on Friday, May 03, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this specifically because of the built in amp and Denon name. Its very easy to set up and use and while I'm not a critical listener it sounds great to my ears.
    Pros:
Built in pre amp, easy setup, affordable
    Cons:
    RCA cables are hardwired

So far I couldn't be happier, it's easy to setup and use right away. I love that it is automatic. The built-in preamp is very nice to have. I wasn't sure about spending the money, however, glad I did.
    Pros:
Great sound, Fully automatic Built in preamp.
    Cons:
no clamp for tone arm rest, no adapter for 45 rpm

    Nice

Written By Mike, Las Cruces, NM on Monday, October 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good looking piece of equipment. Easy set-up. That being said, a stylus force gauge is a must. The buttons and cue arm have a smooth feel and work well. I replaced the stock cartridge with an Oyster Black Pearl and got the warmer sound I was after. The auto feature works well, but I usually use the cue arm so I can clean the LP. It's nice to have the option. I only gave it a 4 star, because I know there are better turntables out there. But, let's be frank, a person could spend hundreds of dollars more and never hear a difference. This is a great buy.
    Pros:
Easy set-up. Good looking. Easy to operate. Works great.
    Cons:
I'm not sure if this a "con", but the stock cartridge is a bit focused toward the high end for me. Depends on what works for you.

Denon DP-300F, What a pleasant surprise!

Written By DS, Puerto Rico on Sunday, February 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit for a beach home to avoid having to run from the comfort of my swing chair at the terrace to the living room every time an LP finished. I was pleasantly surprised to find this turntable delivers sound that is above its price point and with the convenience of automatic shut off. I replaced the factory cartridge with a Denon DL103R, replaced the rubber footers with adjustable bronze spikes and using an external phono preamplifier. The output from the preamp is connected to the auxiliary imput of a Zeppelin Air, which is also a great product, and there it is, a simple unobtrusive system for the second home that sounds and feels right. I am using and enjoying this setup more than a true HiFi system I originally had installed in the same area and worth nearly $9k. Not to say that this one is as accurate and true to the music as the other, but if I am not doing critical listenning, I don't miss the more expensive one. Anyway, at the end is about enjoying the music, and this system has done it for me. In addition, anyone can use it since there is significantly less money at risk and very simple to use.
    Pros:
Good value for the money. Good response with more expensive cartridges.
    Cons:
    Change the rubber footers.

    Good Turntable

Written By Darrell S, Breckenridge TX on Thursday, January 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I`m not going to sit here and slam it and call it cheap (cause it`s not unless you`re rich )or entry level. It`s just as good as the others in my opinion plus it`s fully automatic which sold me on it. All you need with this is a top notch cartridge, good audio system to play it through and some records. Great sound, tracks well from what I`ve noticed. It`s not by any means cheap like I`ve been reading. Anyway you don`t have to spend 1000`s on a turntable to get good audio quality.
    Pros:
Fully automatic, built in preamp, great audio quality
    Cons:
None really except for the generic cartridge ,no clamp for tone arm rest and the lack of a holder for the 45rpm adapter

    Nice Table

Written By SkipApple, Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday, October 08, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this turntable, it's easy to setup and use right away. Very good Owner's Manual/Operating Instruction booklet is also included. I love that it is automatic, too! The cartridge that came with it is adequate, but I replaced it right away with a Grado Black and I find that to be better to my ears. Also, I already had a Shure stylus force gauge and that made it much easier to setup the arm with. The built-in EQ is very nice to have--a great feature. So far I'm enjoying it and couldn't be happier with the service from Crutchfield.

Nice record player, especially for its price. The auto-stop and tone arm return are very nice features.

Minus 1 star for having hard wired RCA cables rather than being able to use your own. The phono preamp works fine, but investing in a stand alone isn't a bad idea

Written By JohnnyV, Elyria, OH on Sunday, May 22, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the 300F to replace the 37F which I bought back in the '80's for $400., which was a lot of money then. I was very happy with it, but it was time for a new one. However, I was not willing to spend a lot on its replacement. So far, I am pleased with the 300F. It delivers good quality sound and its operation is easy. The only suggestion I would make is that I like a tonearm clasp on my turntables, and this one doesn't have one. Also, I prefer direct drive, but again, didn't want to spend a lot of money.

    BEST FOR THE MONEY TURNTABLE

Written By DL, Atlanta on Thursday, April 14, 2011

Forget the reviews that said it's cheap, it's not. I own two right now with
different Audio Technica cartridges (AT440Mla & AT311EP with Shibata stylus) and
the arm is as good any manual on the market under $500. It has the same
    capability as
most manuals with the same functions (lift) and magnetic anti-skate with dial.
You can also use the auto return to avoid standing by or running to the
turntable at the end of play. However, due to the multitude of lead in grooves
on records, best to set the arm down or with lift. The return feature gives
this turntable a big advantage over manuals, and gives a similar performance.
Buy a good cartridge when you buy the turntable, as the unit comes with a throw
away version. Highly recommended for those that want quality with the
    auto/semi-auto function.

The Denon DP300F is an excellent product especially for the price. I have it running thru the auxillary jack of my receiver that has no phono input so the added preamp switch was a plus. Sounds as good as it looks. Great product.

Written By D.C., Shenandoah Valley, Virginia on Monday, March 21, 2011

The unit functions as advertised. The one draw back on this unit is that the
auto mechanism is not smooth, it is loud and clunky. That noise can transfer to
your system depending on the cartridge and pre-amp you use. Once it is playing,
it is quite and plays well for the money invested. Overall, it is a decent
entry level turn-table that should provide years of service.

Just picking it up out of the box I noticed the weight was substantial for this

    Just like old times

Written By John, Pittsburgh on Tuesday, February 08, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read EVERY review, article and blog I could find in an effort to replace my crappy old
Sony turntable. The general consensus was that if I wanted to listen to my now thirty year
old records, and hear every little note and flourish, I would have to spend more than
$1000----or $2000----or beyond. I was willing to break the thousand dollar line, but it
seems that anything beyond the Denon will not start with a push of a button, and more
importantly will STOP and SHUT OFF at the end of a record! If I am paying beyond
$1000 to listen to LPs that have been stored for more than ten years, it is a crap-shoot
on what the sound is going to be like, and if I have have to sit there until the record ends
and lift the needle and shut it off manually, then I am glad that Denon offers a good old
fashioned turntable that sounds great, looks great and is fully automatic. One neat thing,
the feet on this unit are the perfect size to fit a racquetball sliced in half to isolate the TT
from the media table. Overall a great turntable for the price.

I had a number of turntables over the years, this one I like best. Everything was well thoughtout and very easy to use. Next to my Sony ES components it doesn't look cheap and out of place. I transfered the cartridge from my old turntable, a Kenwood with linear tracking to the new turntable and it actually sounds better, the same cartridge. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

    Superb Turntable!

Written By Mr. ALL, Toledo, OH on Sunday, July 05, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much research, I settled on this Denon DP-300f turntable because it's a Denon and because it has a built-in amp since my receiver doesn't have a "phono" input, hence I can plug it anywhere there's an RCA input. This gem sounds superb. The needle that came with is was good but I upgraded the needle to an audiophile needle which improved the sound even more. It's easier to change the needle because the catridge headshell is removable from the tone arm. You will love it. I tested it at very high volume, the needle did not skip at all. The wife who is not into electronics and was skeptical when I decided to purchase a turntable (which she considered as old technology) was blown away at the rich warm sound of this turntable. Buy it!

I gotta say Cructhfield is amazing. I ordered, chatted with them online and my item was shipped thesame night, arrived the next day and I picked it up from UPS the following day. 2-day delivery, even though I paid for normal UPS ground which for most online stores takes 5 to 10 days to arrive from the date I order.

    Sleek, Elegant

Written By Mark, Philadelphia, PA on Thursday, April 02, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this turntable as a birthday present for my wife. I like to shop around prior to making a purchase so I looked in the popular electronics stores as well as the high-end HI-FI stores. The low-end tables I saw appeared to be made of plastic and look cheap. The high-end units were so elite (and pricey) that they were just too much for my needs. This table is a nice balance between both ends of the spectrum. This unit has a quality look without being over the top and it allows for fine tuning of the arm via the counter-weight balance and anti-skate adjustment. These features are very important to me in order to preserve the quality of my LP collection. The unit has a pre-amp for versatile connectivity and auto start / stop which automatically sets and retracts the arm. It also has a gentle set down when using the que-lever. It was easy to setup and it looks very nice. I personally think it looks sleek and elegant. As for the sound, the table performed excellently, our old LP's sound great. Oh, I almost forgot, the kids were dancing in front of the unit and my wife and I couldn't believe it didn't skip, we were both very impressed. I would suggest purchasing a brush to clean the LP's prior to playing them. - Old habits die hard.

I am very pleased with the quality of this product and the overall experience I had with Crutchfield.
