Kicker

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Kicker 10C84

by Dominic Devito

Strong bass adds a whole new dimension to your car's sound system, and Kicker Comp subwoofers give you tremendous bass value for your dollar. You'll hear and feel the power of Kicker bass without feeling like your wallet just got thumped.

Kicker technology at work
Each Comp sub features a flex-resistant polypropylene cone with 360-degree back bracing for hard-hitting lows without distortion. The ribbed foam surround offers long excursion and keeps the cone on target, while double stitching ensures your investment won't come apart at the seams. A tough steel basket provides a reliable foundation for big bass, and extensive venting ensures long-lasting performance that won't break down when the bass gets heavy.

Easy to add to nearly any setup
Kicker's 10C84 8" subwoofer handles up to 100 watts RMS to bring out the depth your music's been missing, and its 4-ohm impedance makes it compatible with just about every amplifier on the market. This versatile sub works well in sealed or ported enclosures, and it's even suitable for free-air applications.

Highlights:

  • 8" 4-ohm subwoofer
  • injection-molded polypropylene cone
  • ribbed foam surround
  • suitable for free-air use

Subwoofer Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Subwoofer Features

Polypropylene Cone: The Kicker Comp subwoofer's super-rigid injection-molded polypropylene cone features 360-degree back bracing to completely eliminate flex and distortion.

Ribbed Foam Surround: The optimized ribbed foam surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The Kicker Comp subwoofer features durable Spiralead tinsel leads, which are woven into the woofer's progressive-roll polycotton spider, for added strength and reliability.

Steel Basket with Vented Pole Piece: The Kicker Comp subwoofer features a resilient, steel basket with coil-cooling perimeter venting and a vented pole piece for heat dissipation, so the high-temperature voice coil stays cool.

Speaker Terminals: The spring-loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 10-gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

Enclosure Compatibility

Enclosure Versatility: The Kicker Comp subwoofer is versatile, performing in vented or sealed enclosures, and in free-air applications as well.

Sealed Enclosure Applications: A sealed enclosure design gives the smoothest response with increased energy at the lowest frequency between 20 to 30 Hz.

  • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 0.5 cu/ft
  • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 1.2 cu/ft

Recommended Vented Box Volume: A vented enclosure design is the choice for loud, high-performance bass for SPL contests.

  • Compact: 0.66 cu/ft with a 1.5" x 8" slot port opening that is 18" in depth
  • SQ: 1.2 cu/ft with a 1.5" x 8" slot port opening that is 12.25" in depth

Note: The SQ enclosures generates a flatter response curve and extends sub-bass response.

Infinite Baffle Mounting: The Kicker Comp subwoofer does not require a sealed or vented enclosure for good bass performance. The Comp subwoofer is designed to also be used as a free-air driver. The infinite baffle mounting method effectively utilizes the rear deck and trunk space of most sedan type vehicles.

Serious Kick from small package

Written By Big Phil, Port Saint Lucie on Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to upgrade the factory system in my Chrysler Pacifica. I lucked out and found the subwoofer housing for my vehicle so the install was easy pretty much a plug and play. After hooking the subwoofer up I was impressed with the overall sound, you are not going to hear me coming down the block but the tightness and quality of the sound in the car is great. I would recommend this for someone who is looking for quality sound at an affordable price.
Pros:
nice sound quality, great price

nice blend of sound

Written By tz, amherst, ohio on Tuesday, January 01, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

a top choice to round out my system. i have 4 polk speakers in the doors of my 03' lincoln town car. i needed to add the extra punch that was taxing on my door speakers. i installed this sub in the factory rear deck cut out. almost a perfect fit. a tad small. the sound blends right into my system perfectly. just what i was looking for. i was not looking to shatter my rear window, just sharp clean kick. perfect. an amp for just the sub worked best for me.
Pros:
nice clean strong hit.
Cons:
not a thing

Good subs

Written By BradC., Santa Rosa, CA on Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Originally bought these for a regular cab F350 and they sounded great in the truck!, moved them into an extended cab pickup and they were "okay" they fill out the sound spectrum nicely and they sound good at moderate volumes but once you crank these little guys you can hear them stressin'. All in all another great kicker products, good boom for your buck just dont expect to be blown away from a small driver and sound quality is only moderate.
Pros:
great value, attractive
Cons:
not the best sound quality

Great Value Subwoofer

Written By SkidMarc, Bowie, Maryland on Thursday, November 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this subwofer as a direct replacement for a friend/client's older Navigator. Some modification was required to the stock enclosure, but it fit well otherwise. He was pleased with it's performance and having recovered much needed storage space (he was previously using an external 10" sub in a vented enclosure). The performance was comparable as I believe that the stock subwoofer amp is better matched.
Pros:
Price. Solid performance. Fit nicely in early Navigator's stock enclosure with minor modification. Reasonably shallow depth.
Cons:
Lacks detail. Build quality and performance is not as good as others I've used/installed (JBL, Polk).

Loud but not quit as loud as i was expecting

Written By Dro, Mobile, AL on Wednesday, November 07, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I install this in the back dash of a 07 dodge charger. A 8" hole was already there for a factory sub but there was no sub there so I bought this dropped it in and connected a 500 watt amp to it. I can tell it there sound deep on some notes but not as much as expected. I am using it as a free air sub. I tried a box didn't make too much of a difference.
Pros:
Loud and Deep, adds a lil to a factory setup
Cons:
Can't tell too much if you are trying to run louder after market setup

Sounds pretty good, although I now only have one speaker because the other speaker I had crapped out. This one was a replacement of one of my old kickers. I should have bought two because the other old speaker whent out shortly after. They were about 20 years old.

Very Happy

Written By Shane, Paradise, Ca on Tuesday, August 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub-woofer to replace the stock sub in my 97 expedition. It fit perfect except the mounting holes didn't line up. I just used some self tapping screws and it was installed in minutes. I can't really say if it sounds way better than the stock sub because it was blown when I bought the vehicle. I am very happy with the sub.

Robbie129

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my wifes 2002 chevy Tahoe. It replaced the factory 8" sub that was in it. The sound is great and it thumps nicely using the stock sub box that is already there and the stock amp that is built in. If you do chose to go with the factory sub box, some modification will be needed. As the sub ring is actually bigger than the box opening. This is easily done with a dremel and some time. Once I finished the box mod all went smoothly. It shows great thru the grill on the interior body panel and sounds awesome! Also had to double check on the wiring and the staff were ready to help! Thanks Crutchfield!
Pros:
Ease of installation, great sound, & almost perfect fit.
Cons:
Non.

Excellent Toyota Avalon JBL Sub Replacement

Written By A Smith, Knoxville, TN on Wednesday, June 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just finished replacing the JBL subwoofer in my 2001 Toyota Avalon. I had no intention of spending $50 on a speaker rebuild kit when I could spend $50 on the Kicker. The Crutchfield advisor was absolutely correct in stating that the factory system will be challenged to drive the sub. As another reviewer stated, I'll likely look to install an amp now that I have a speaker in place worth driving. Even with the factory amp, it sounds great. The diameter of the speaker will fit perfectly in the plastic Toyota bracket, you just need to drill 8 holes in the bracket versus the 4 for the original speaker. Toughest part of the installation is trying to pull the plastic bracket out from under the rear deck panel and re-installing it with the new sub mounted. Get yourself a chisel to use as a lever (better than a screwdriver, more surface area on the fulcrum and less likely to damage when prying.....I know, I know, right tool for the right job, but this works) and pry it out and back in. Keep the kids in the house while you're cussing this molded plastic thing. I would have liked to pitch it but you need it to hold on the sub cover/back up light housing.

Enjoy - best $50 I've spent in awhile.

Works like it should

Written By Greg, Mitchell, SD on Monday, June 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speaker Fit into my 04 Avalon with very little modification to the current sub bracket. The stock amp does not power it as well as I would like but is is a huge improvement over the blown stock 8". I think I will be looking into an amp next.
