Polk Audio

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Polk Audio MM1540

by John Pollard

Polk Audio's Mobile Monitor Series subwoofers bring out superior performance from lighter materials, so you'll get the impact you want without the extra weight of a conventional system. Advanced engineering and optimized components reproduce your sound with uncompromising accuracy, for low end that is rich and clear.

The MM1540 15" 4-ohm subwoofer handles up to 425 watts RMS, using a copper voice coil and neodymium magnet motor to drive the polymer cone with exceptional efficiency. The carbon composite basket features a "wagon wheel" design that resists flexing during heavy excursion, so your sub hits solidly without distorting.

This sub is certified for marine use, and Polk includes corrosion-resistant stainless steel mounting hardware.

Highlights:

  • 15" 4-ohm subwoofer
  • polymer cone with butyl rubber surround
  • carbon composite basket
  • certified for marine use
  • optional matching grille complements the basket design

    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Klippel Optimized: Using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk engineers were able to optimize the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance, even at extreme listening levels.

Polymer Woofer Cone with Butyl Rubber Surrounds: The Polymer woofer cones and butyl rubber surround will not break down over time and will survive the rigors of harsh automotive environments.

Voice Coil and Former: The high temperature 50mm copper voice coil and polyamide former withstand the most rigorous use while maintaining extremely low distortion for bass punch and output.

Carbon Composite Basket: The woofer's carbon composite basket is lightweight and will not flex during music audio peaks.

Input Terminals: The nickel plated heavy duty input spring-post terminals accommodate pin connectors, single or dual banana plugs, or bare speaker wire up to 10 AWG.

Preconditioning Period: Mobile Monitor subwoofers will achieve optimum performance once they are thoroughly broken in. To break in your new MM subwoofer, play 20 to 30 hours of music at moderate levels.

Marine Certified Woofer: Polk MM Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: Polk recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure made of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 1.5 cubic feet.

Ported Box Volume: Polk recommends a ported enclosure made of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 2.5 cubic feet using a slot port measuring 18.5" wide x 1.25" tall x 20" deep.

    Polk MM1540

Awesome Sub!! Great for sound quality and hits hard in my toyota extracab truck. I am only pushing 150rms for the break in period and I am amazed with how hard it hits and the sound quality. The sensitivity is 93db so it really does not need a lot of power to hit hard. It feels like I am giving way more power. After I break it in I will push it wit 450wats rms. I placed it in a 1.5 sealed box and the sound quality is nice and tight. I was also surprised wit how much excursion this sub moves with only 150rms especially from a shallow sub. I was very skeptical when I saw the small magnet and it being a shallow sub. But now I am a true believer of Polk MOMO's. I'd say it hits like JL's. I used to have a JL10w6v2 and a 10w3v2. I could not be happier wit this polk, unless I had 2 of them I would be even more happy. I am always excited to drive to work and back just so I can hear my sub pound. keep in mind that my sub is in a sealed box so the sound quality is really nice and tight inside my truck but it does not sound that lout outside the vehicle. Thanks Crutchfield!

All I can say is wow. I used to only get Alpine subs and I just happen to blow my 2 12 inch type E's and I was in the market for some new ones and I was going to get a Alpine Type S 15 inch but someone told me about these and I thought for the price I'd try it so I bought one and wow this sub hits better then my old Alpine subs and I'm only pushing 450 watts to this one sub. Now I'm still "breaking them in" so I still haven't pushed them all the way yet but just in the breaking in period there are times when this sub makes my ears hurt. I had a friend like this sub so much he bought two of them to replace his 12inch Alpine Type X & I can't wait to hear what 2 can do with 1100 watts pushing them.

I don't know why some people are complaining that the magnet is too small. Come on people it's 2013 don't you think that they would come out with better technology so they wouldn't have to use such a big magnet. I guess some people want to stay in the stone age.
    Pros:
    hits lows great
    Cons:
the cost of the sub is way too cheap

well i bought these on a whim. i have never had polk but have installed some components and heard them;read about them and heard good things. so i found these on sale and had some tax money to burn up; i mean; why save it ? so i scooped up four of these dudes. now ; i normaly buy kicker products i love the amps ; comonents and subs. i have had comps and L 7 and love the quality and sound. nothing beats like some L 7 on a good amp ! i wanted some 15" L7 but they were too expensive for me at this time. so i began my experiment. i purchased a 1.75 cuft box and a 2.5 cuft box both sealed. last year i had some L 7 10" in a ported box and was very impressed after the break in period. so tried one mm1540 in the 2.5 cuft box on a kicker ix1000.1 amp. it is single voice coil at 4 ohms so with this amp it was getting 500rms. now at first it was hitting ok not real hard but very accurate and sound very very very nice. not too boomy but had some good tactile feel. after 5 hours of play time this one sub in the back seat of my sedan was a menace. it was hitting so hard and so deep on many songs ( rap ) it would almost hurt my ears. so inside the cab these pass the test. but ..... outside of the cab it had no where near the bump ; the " knock" sound of my two 10" L 7. granted they were in a good ported box and fully broken in and there were two at full power. also these respond well / sound good on half tghe power. i tried them at 250 rms as well as 500.( ix500.4 bridged into two channel
    Pros:
inexpensive ; water resistant / uv resistant ; not as deep physcially as other subs ; requires much less airspace for shallow mount like truck or jeep; low power still makes these guys sing. these are very accurate sounding subs. they hit every note. they seem to play very deep tones pretty well considering the modest power ratings . spring terminals; very light weight; nice flat black color.
    Cons:
the ring that the surounds are attached two/ the ring that has screw holes to screw to the box is very delicate. it is made of plastic or something crappy like that. i have installed many subs / speakers and am very careful not to over tighten but with my drill on a very light torque setting the outer ring/basket cracked. when installing these hand tighten. the basket/ring will crack in two. but other than that dollar for dollar the kicker comp 15" hit harder.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this for a home theater sub. I was looking for awhile when I ran across this deal from Crutchfield. I always associated Polk Audio with quality. So I bought the sub. I built a 3.5 cu ft cabinet with a slotted port of 650 cu inches. It sounds incredible. I am running a 300 watt amp I purchased somewhere else. It rumbles the neighbors house. Having built many cabinets for kitchens and baths the sub enclosure wasn't a big deal.
    Pros:
Price vs performance is untouchable. Perfect for the money.
    Cons:
    None so far.

    Polk MM 15" subwoofer

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first experience with Polk products, and was somewhat skeptical. The subwoofer has a tiny magnet, making me question power handling abilities, and unattractive backing (limiting mounting styles). For the price I got more than expected. Being marine certified, I am not worrying about mounting sub in wheel well of SUV trunk.
    Pros:
    Water-resistant, price, box size
    Cons:
    Unattractive backside, tiny magnet

The bass from this speaker is amazing. It as the tight sound of a 10 inch woofer, with the power and low frequency response of a 15 inch woofer. It can easily keep up with my Infinity component speakers in the from, I even have to turn the sub down so that I do not over power them.
    Pros:
    Light, and shallow.

This is a fantastic sub as long as you have the space to fit it. I had three 12's and needed to downgrade to fit a stroller, couldn't have found a better deal. I still don't know why this sub is so low priced but take advantage of it. Sounds great with excellent specs and super thin. I built a custom box with 1.7 cu ft and it puts out clean sounding bass. I would definitely recommend this sub to anyone that can accommodate a wide sub.

I'm still trying to figure out why this 15 inch sub is so inexpensive. It has everything going for it, It's a Polk product, the design is slim enough to make it a truck sub, It's a freakin 15 inch sub and I feel the specs are true to its word maybe ever dialed down from actual. It's just a bargain of awesome. I use to have a very used and very old 8 inch Bazooka, it was my first also, and I felt like getting something better, bigger, and better, so why not go all the way with a 15?
    Pros:
Sound quality, name, durability (have yet to hear it distort ever a little)
    Cons:
    nothing

Amazing subwoofer and can't beat the price. I have 2 of these in a 6.2 cu.ft. box tuned at about 28-30 Hertz and all I can say is wow, these things hit the lows with ease, but they also hit mids very well and highs are ok which is more than I could ask from a 15 inch subwoofer. I only have them on a jbl 750ez (from Crutchfield) and it pounds like crazy. Shout out to Crutchfield for the fast shipping too!
    Pros:
Light weight (for a 15) and small enough to fit into smaller boxes and amazing price
    Cons:
None that I can think of other than the fact that they ripped the Aero port out of my box (not really a con tho)
