Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer Premier DEH-P710BT

by Ken Nail

High-quality audio and hands-free calls

Put it all together in one package with Pioneer Premier's DEH-P710BT CD receiver. It delivers superb sound quality, great looks, and a long list of features including built-in Bluetooth® — you'll enjoy the best of all possible worlds.

Pioneer Premier DEH-P710BT CD Receiver

Advanced Sound Retriever

High-fidelity audio is at the heart

The DEH-P710BT sets the bar high for sound quality. You can customize the crystal-clear audio output with a 7-band equalizer that allows plenty of adjustments to your music's tonal balance. Pioneer's Sound Retriever ensures that your MP3, WMA, or AAC files will be worthy of the receiver's attention — it breathes new life into flat-sounding music files by restoring information lost in compression. High-pass and low-pass filters adjust the range of frequencies going to your speakers so they play at peak efficiency.

A clear, bright display

The DEH-P710BT's bright blue Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) display is easy to read, even in the worst lighting conditions. The three lines of text display ensure you'll know all the details about the songs you're playing. If you enjoy some "wow" factor, you'll find that the full-motion 3D screen savers are right up your alley.

Expansion options

Build a high-powered car audio system by connecting amps and subs to the three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs. You can connect a satellite radio to open up a world of music, sports, and news programming, or add an HD Radio™ tuner to access the improved sound quality broadcast by participating AM and FM stations.

You've got two USB inputs and an auxiliary input at your disposal, so you can plug thumb drives, iPods®, and almost any other audio source into the mix. Connecting your iPod via the USB bypasses the iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, so you'll enjoy the improved sound reproduction of the receiver's high-quality DAC instead. An automotive-grade iPod cable is included, so you can leave the one that came with your iPod at home.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Hands-on Research for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Keep your hands on the wheel

Built-in Bluetooth connectivity means you won't have to fumble for your phone when you get a call. The receiver mutes for an incoming call and you can talk just by pressing a button on the receiver. The DEH-P710BT will download your phone's address book automatically, so you'll have all the important numbers you need in the receiver's memory for one-touch outbound calls. Use the receiver's voice recognition to make calls and input phone numbers and names into the phonebook. You can even access a help menu to assist you with the proper voice commands.

Bluetooth Voice Control

Note: Bluetooth compatibility with this receiver may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

      Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within five seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. The warning tone can be turned off in the menu, if desired. Face-fixing holders and screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Blue OEL Display: The DEH-P710BT features a blue Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) dot matrix display, with a resolution of 192 x 48 pixels. You can easily view file and folder lists from your MP3, WMA, and CD Text-encoded discs, radio presets, or data from your iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius. The brightness of the display can be set between 0 and 15.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer function On or Off. The orange/white illumination wire must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for this feature to work.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display be pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display. When the unit is off but the ignition is on, the button illumination will light up when the vehicle's headlights are turned on.

      Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P710BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P710BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P710BT are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

Sound Retriever: The Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P710BT is equipped with a 7-band graphic EQ with 7 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

      • Center Frequencies: 50Hz, 125Hz, 315Hz, 800Hz, 2kHz, 5kHz, and 12.5kHz
      • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom1, Custom2, and EQ Flat

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

      • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
      • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
      • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24dB).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (+12dB to 0dB).

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Function Confirmation Tones: The receiver emits an audible beep tone each time a button is pressed. These function confirmation tones cannot be turned off.

      AM/FM Tuner

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

      CD Playback

Compressed Audio Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/AAC/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a bit rate from 5-320 kbps, and AAC files with a variable bit rate from 8-320 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

List Button: The List button on the front panel allows you to view the track title list, folder list, file list, preset channel list, or disc title list, depending upon the source. Once the List button is pressed, you can turn the multi-control knob to view each item on the list. To select the highlighted item, you can press the multi-control. This allows you to quickly make selections from most any source.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 10 characters long. When a Pioneer multi-disc CD player is connected, you can store up to 100 CD titles.

      Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Solution: The DEH-P710BT is equipped with Pioneer's new Built-in Bluetooth Solution. You can make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver. When you're not utilizing hands-free calling, you can use Bluetooth Wireless Technology to control and listen to a Bluetooth audio player.

Voice Recognition: You can use voice recognition to input phone numbers and names into the phonebook, and make calls. You can also access a help menu to assist you with the proper voice commands.

Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip.

Phone Pairing: Up to 5 Bluetooth-compatible cell phones can be registered to this head unit. You can transfer your entire phonebook at a single time to the head unit, which can memorize up to 1000 different numbers for each user.

Bluetooth Audio Players: In addition to supporting Bluetooth's Hands-Free Profile (HFP), the head unit also supports Bluetooth's wireless Audio Streaming Profile (A2DP) and Bluetooth's Audio Control Profile (AVRCP). These features allow you to wirelessly transmit music from your Bluetooth compatible cell-phone or portable audio player to the DEH-P710BT so you can listen to your stored music files through your vehicle's audio system.

      External Device Connection

Dual USB Inputs: The DEH-P710BT has dual USB inputs on a single 8" pigtail. You can connect and play music files from a USB flash drive and an iPod at the same time. A 57" USB cable extension is supplied, so you can plug in your USB devices with ease. The USB flash memory must be USB Mass Storage Class compliant. USB Memory that are at least 250MB in capacity, formatted in FAT32 or FAT16 are compatible.

iPod Interface: The DEH-P710BT can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports iPods with a standard Dock Connector. (Please see compatibility list below for your model and software version.) You can connect your iPod to one of the unit's USB inputs using the included CD-iU50 cable or the one supplied with your iPod. When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself (Passenger Mode--not available on the iPod nano 1st generation or iPod 5th generation). You can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually. You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The Pioneer DEH-P710BT is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model functions (as of Dec. 2009):

      very nice, except mic

Written By mike, milwaukee wi on Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Everything is top notch. I will not repeat what others have reviewed, but only add. I agree with ALL the pro's listed in these reviews, but have to add one CON. The microphone is terrible. I can hear people fine in phone calls, but they always have a hard time hearing me. This can be with the car off, and the mig is on the steering wheel column, not far from my face. Speaking louder or directly into the mic doesnt help. I am forced to always switch to the phone, which sucks, because the whole reason i got this was to avoid that. Iphone 4s on 6.0.1 OS... same deal on an htc thunderbolt with gingerbread.
      Pros:
      everything
      Cons:
the mic (people can't understand me on a bluetooth call)

Mostly Great, A Little Not So Great

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a record producer, I'm always checking mixes in a vehicle (I have 3), and I want some flexibility with the audio, which this unit has plenty of. The EQ gives me a chance to really tweak. The Sub controls are very versitile. The power is adequate...I choose not to add an amp, so my music sounds "consumer" which is what I need it to do. I usually record a CD, and an MP3, to hear the difference, and this unit performs well for this need.

The display is beautiful, once you learn how to control it. I picked a conservative background, and the text jumps out at me quite well.

The bluetooth is out of this world, coming from an older Kenwood unit, where I suffered a horrible bluetooth experience. This unit shook hands with my IPhone 3GS easily, loaded the phonebook swiftly ( I have 1000 contacts), and streamed music effortlessly.

The IPod interface is really good, offering me to either control from the Pioneer, or the IPod. It isn't as easy as the Kenwood IPod interface, but the alphabet search makes it worth the hassle.

The "Not So Great" is the main control knob/joy stick...and the deep menu driven user interface. I'm sure in time, it will become more automatic to me, but right now, I'm having to use the manual more than I expected to, and that comes from someone who's had a lot of these type units.

The silliest feature....having to dive through 3 button pushes to reach "pause." How come no pause button?

All in all, way more good than bad. I'd buy it again.

      a flawed, great sounding unit

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A longtime Pioneer fan and Crutchfield customer, I was looking forward to the added bluetooth support, over my previous Pioneer DEH-P6800mp model. The unit sounds great, is feature filled and bluetooth integration is excellent. I was frustrated to find that only two of the five ipods I own are compatable with the interface, my 3 year old DEH adapted worked flawlessly. Secondly, the steering wheel mounted remote was useless. Crutchfields superior tech support proptly shipped a replacement remote, which unfortunately worked as well as the first. As a flagship model I have higher expectations and think pioneer could have done better.

I'd like to address the "bad reviews" listed here.

A 7 Band EQ is bass and treble controls, heh, and time alignment is a specific feature not common on many receivers. It would be something you would specifically look for in a head unit BEFORE buying it.

If you read the manual you would know that the reverse display feature can be turned off in the main configuration menu (this is where you set the clock, date, etc.) Read the manual for instructions on how to access this menu.

If you wanted a simple, large display then you should have done a bit more research before purchasing this unit. You also mention the reverse feature as a con, apparently while you were sitting in the car with the manual for a week you neglected to actually read it.

I agree with the other 4/5 star reviews listed here. I only give this unit a 4 because of the remote, which I don't use, but I imagine a lot of people do and so it should be a more reliable than it is. It has everything I was looking for and more. I like the display, I like the customizing options of the sound (HPF/LPF/EQ), iPod controls are wonderful, and the BT capabilities are awesome. Everything else is a bonus for me and while it may not meet the demanding standards of some people it wasn't on my list of priorities for a head unit and thus doesn't really matter to me.

Great Sound - Hard to Use

Written By Anonymous, Dallas, TX on Thursday, December 31, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver in October 2009 and have just replaced it (2 months later). Overall, I really liked the sound. It made my factory speakers sound great and has a lot of bells and whistles. I may just be getting too old, but for me the text is really small and I had to really look hard to read some of the text on the readout. Also, I'm not very fond of the control knob. It's kind of sensitive and if you're trying to adjust anything and hit a bump on the road, you're probably going to select the wrong option. Also, there is no way to go directly to a specific XM channel...which is complicated by the small text on the screen. I replaced this with a Pioneer with a larger touch screen.

      Awesome Head Unit!

Written By Mark, Western Massachusetts on Wednesday, December 30, 2009

First off, I've been a die-hard Alpine customer since the mid-90's. After much research, I opted for this unit for its features & Pioneer's reputation. Fortunately, I received it for Xmas from my wonderful mom & aunt as it was the only thing I wanted (besides my 2 front teeth...j/k). After much frustration that my iPod didn't work with it, I realized my iPod was not up to date with software. After that little hiccup, iPod function is excellent. Bluetooth works great...the only thing is my cell (LG enV Touch) has text-to-speech for text msgs. but this feature doesn't work over the Bluetooth, but no big deal. Display is great & is even clear in direct sunlight (there is some wash-out, but thats to be expected). Excellent sound-tuning options (although time correction would've been nice) & sound quality is on par (if not better) with all but the most expensive units (i.e. Alpine F#1 Status/Pioneer PRS). The remote can be a little fussy but overall works well. To Don in SC, I agree about the reversing display, but if you read the manual, you CAN turn the reversing feature off. I plan to add the HD radio tuner as I listen to a variety of music & have made do with terrestrial radio to this point & would really like to use the iTunes tagging feature. All in all, its a Phenomenal head unit (and for the price, Unbeatable!)...BRAVO Pioneer!

      Great features, Poor Sound Quality

Written By Mark, Phila, PA on Sunday, December 27, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If your looking for lots of built in features, this is probably the best bang for the buck. It comes with anything you could want in a HU. However if you're looking to tweak your sound, then you might want to look elsewhere.

      Pros:
      * Decent pre-amps
      * BT works flawlessly
      * iPod controls are the nicest I've used
      * Lots of display options
      * Display is crisp and bright.
      * 7 band Graphic EQ is easy to use.
      * I like that i can use my iPod and USB sticks, and still have an AUX leftover.
      * Voice control is cool, when it works.
      * High & Lowpass filters.

      Cons:
      * No bass or treble controls
      * No time alignment options
      * Joystick is a PAIN to use effectively
      * Steering-wheel remote is useless due to it being infrared. If you're not turning the wheel it works fine.
      * PICO fuses blow out.

I really want to like this HU. It has all the features I was looking for, but I just can't get this unit to sound good in my car. My old Panasonic CQ8303 sounded 10x's better. The 7-band EQ just doesn't offer enough adjustment, and there is no way to alter the sound stage. I run some pretty decent equipment in my rig, and I was hoping the 710 would enhance the rest of my system. Sadly it's the weak link.

Also I already had to send 1 back due to the pico fuses blowing, which is common.

If sound quality isn't a major concern, and you need all the bells and whistles, I would say this is a solid unit. If you're like me and need your system to sound it's best, I would look elsewhere.

I would not buy this again

Written By Don, Mount Pleasant, SC on Thursday, December 17, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have the Pioneer Premier DEH-P710BT. It is a rather expensive single DIN HU, but I really wanted something I wasn't going have to do the Blue Tooth (BT) syncro fight with all the time. It does the BT sync reliably and streams music from my iPhone via BT (or direct cable if you prefer) I prefer BT because I find the iPhone interface better than trying to navigate the iPhone music via the HU. Those are the pros.

The cons are the steering wheel mounted remote is NOT reliable. The only time it is consistent is at night when there is no light interference. This is installed in a Porsche 911 so the distance from the remote to the Head Unit (HU) is not a factor. I'm not one for obnoxious fast and furious radio displays of today, which is one of the reasons I chose this model and overall it has a pretty subtle look. Well, the LCD inverts about every 10 seconds. I.E. it goes from black background with blue lettering (preferred) to blue background and black lettering (too bright) and this is very distracting to me. I find myself glancing at the display every time it changes. So, I turn the display off. It temporarily comes on anytime you make an adjustment and then turns back off. Not a good solution, but it is what it is. I would not buy it again.

Written By Noel, Lihue, HI on Sunday, November 22, 2009

This CD receiver is one of the best receiver i ever purchased, all the features are superb....bluetooth and iphone connection is so easy, as long as your iphone's bluetooth is on, all your calls go straight to the receiver without having to look at your phone...listening to your ipod is plug and play.. Probably the best thing about this receiver is, it makes me a safer driver while driving and talking on the phone at the same time... Every penny that i spent was well worth it... I'm thinking of buying another one for my girlfriends car.. Thanks Doc from crutchfield...

      Pioneer Premier DEH-P710BT

Installed in a 2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Removed Ford Factory Radio and speakers and installed DEH-P710BT with Infinity Reference 6822 CF 5x7/6x8 speakers. Tight base, clear highs and mids. Sound is infinitely adjustable with built in equalizer. Lots of sources-iPod, aux, thumb drive, Blue Tooth, tuner, CD- but mind boggling. Thumb drive folders scroll nicely. Blue tooth pairs and works well although the microphone is terrible. I've adjusted the "far end" volume to the max and still sounds like I'm in a tin can. Tuner has 24 presets-18 FM and 6 AM. Connected my Zune through Soundgate Adaptor-charges and plays through one connection. Remote control is easy and safe-attached to my steering wheel-although the center "select" is tricky and the remote doesn't work all the time. A previous reviewer complained about the "reverse" feature-the display flashes every 30 seconds. This can be turned off.

Complaints?-the clock display is tiny unless the unit is turned off. The brightness and dimmer control vary by a max of 5-need more ability to adjust dimmer for night driving. The "movies" the screen plays are a waste. Must read the user manual closely to adjust this unit-it is highly capable but highly complex.

Overall, 4 star because of the complexity, poor display design and spotty performance of the remote. Panasonic needs to refine these features and make it simpler to merit 5 stars. Sound is fantastic. Enjoy listening from so many sources.

      Great Unit all the way

I could not be happier with this purchase. It was super easy to install with all the instructions included and all the free install gear. The bluetooth on the unit works super smooth and pairs with my iphone 3GS within seconds of turning my car on. The wireless music streaming is flawless as well as the bluetooth phone capabilities. No one knows the difference of me being on the phone or using the stereo to make my calls. Allows two way usage so you can play your songs and make calls through the phone itself. It is easier to do this way. Just my preference. Overall Great Unit. BUY IT

      Slick unit, USB iPod problems

Written By demarest, Bay Area, CA on Friday, October 16, 2009
Installed in a 1996 Honda Accord LX
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased to replace a factory radio in my 1996 Accord LX. The install kit made easy work of installtion. Make sure to read everything twice, including the Pioneer install guide. Bluetooth works flawlessly with my iPhone 3G (v3.1.2) - I get in the car and it's recognized. My headset doesn't work this well - I frequently have to re-pair the phone and headset. I have the included mic mounted on my dash and sometimes I'm told I sound far away. Voice recognition is passable but could be better. Visor mount seems to be a worse location. The display isn't as bright as they claim. In the daytime sun, at the highest brightness, it's hard to read. The remote works well, although when mounted on the left side of the steering wheel it sometimes won't accept key presses. Moving it to the right, closer to the unit, fixed this. Perhaps the battery needs to be replaced. My only gripe is with the iPod USB interface. I frequently get "CHECK USB" when accessing the iPod, which requires powering off my car. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. I also have had the iPhone stop playing, or fail to recover after accepting an incoming call. I've checked for firmware updates for the radio, but none seem to have been released. Grounding is good. I've switched the iPod cable to the 2nd USB port and this seems to have fixed the issue. I plan on testing this further and calling Crutchfield to see what they say. If this works reliably, this review becomes 5 stars - I love this receiver.

      Flaky and highly annoying features

Written By Doc, Va on Friday, October 09, 2009
Installed in a 2002 Ford Explorer
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They chose every annoying features. I have simple needs. Radio, ipod, Big clock, dim display, control from steering wheel, hands free. Sit in the car w/ the manual for the first week. Says it can dim the display. But you can ONLY shut off (not dim) the display on the tuner and only if unit is ON. Only way to get a big clock is to turn unit off. Errors constantly-"usually" fixable by cycling through inputs. No "mute" on steering wheel (conf calls). Steering wheel unit rarely works (need to check battery but only 2 mo old). website has no firmware or instructions like manual says. The most annoying feature. The front face goes negative dark->light, light->dark every 10-15 seconds. At night this is intolerable. None of the display options I have tried seem to get around this. Everybody complains about the mic, I was voted worst phone. Yes I adjusted remote vol. The support page is terrible. I am sure there are other things I am leaving out. Too many annoying features to remember. The only reason it gets two stars is it does work most of the time and sounds decent even if I don't like the features they chose. It sounds great for audio books. It's terrible for others on the phone but I hate headsets. The short back cables were hard to place on my ford expl. The mic is plenty long. Voice recognition gets it right about 1/2 time. Bluetooth initially took work. I recommend against this unit as is unless you want flashy.

Replaced the factory head unit in my 2002 Yukon (Tahoe equiv) and couldn't be
happier. Why didn't I do this years ago?! Plenty of power to give new life to the
factory sub, which now sounds like an aftermarket unit! Bluetooth works great, as
does voice dialing. Ipod control is seemless and easy. The multi-controller
joystick makes it a bit difficult to press the center button sometimes, but this is a
minor nit. Otherwise a great unit at a great price. The Alpine equivalent unit
would have been several hundred more, due Bluetooth not being built in. I love
Alpine, but I wanted Bluetooth, so I took a chance with Pioneer. I was not
      disappointed!

      Everything and more

Written By DevonDuo, Devon, Pa on Tuesday, September 22, 2009

My mission was to integrate my iphone with my car. After a horrible experience at the local big box(I was ill-advised by their staff on choosing a radio that didn't do this fully), I am more than satisfied with this head unit. Kudo's to the Crutchfield Staff for guiding me.

I installed the iPhone cord through the adapter kit, which will allow me to plug in for charging, use the gps, and phone. I put the other usb plug in the glove box.

I had some concerns about the quality of the a2dp streaming. Though there is a slight difference, I am quite happy with it. It will work fine for streaming music on short trips not worth plugging the phone in.

I was also happy with the steering wheel remote, over a useless non-steering wheel remote with the unit I returned.

The interface is quite intuitive, and easy to use, which was also a major complaint of mine from the Kennwood unit.

I still haven't tried the voice recognition yet, but will soon.

I couldn't be happier with the product and customer service from Crutchfield.

      Absolutely amazing!

Written By Curtis, Austin, TX on Thursday, August 27, 2009

This is the best unit I have ever owned or ever seen in the single dins. There are a ton of options and available connections and I was surprised at the amount of power this unit put out. I have always been a fan of Pioneer and yet again, they have come through with an amazing unit. Lots of sub options and tuning capabilities and it's a very clean sound. You won't be sorry if you get this unit. The iPod controls are great, and if you have Bluetooth enabled, you can change the source to Bluetooth and it will pick up where the USB/iPod source left off. My old deck was a Pioneer as well, and I was yet again surprised to find out that the remote I had worked for this unit as well. My old remote (CD-R600) had the attenuator function, even though I haven't found that on the unit or steering wheel remote, and it allows you to pause the CD or the iPod, and edit the audio options. This is a 99.9% perfect unit. And I haven't had any Bluetooth problems or radio reception problems at all.

just recently purchased a Pioneer Plasma Monitor(jaw dropping before/after calibration)...That being said when it came time to replace my Alpine head-unit(i wanted bluetooth) then I could only think of replacing it with a Pioneer Product....Buying from Crutchfield also gives you the Premier 2 year warranty whereas buying from a non-authorized retailer gives no warranty. Thats just how Pioneer works. So buy from these guys....For instance I got standard shipping and it came in less then 24 hours after I ordered it. I have mine on defaults mostly right now and it still sounds awesome. More quality at higher volume. Wayyyy more then the Alpine. The BT audio and BT phone features are as simple as they get. It automatically finds the phone again when the unit is turned back on. I work for Honda and the vehicles equipped with BT are sooo complicated I spend hours with customers trying to explain how it works and they constantly complain about their phones not pairing once they are in the car again. Then they have to go through the complicated routine of searching/discovery the phone again, which can take 5 minutes. Calls on the 710BT come through loud and clear from the speakers. 20x better then my iphone speakerphone.

I wanted a rear iPod USB port along with Bluetooth so it was between this unit and the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X993. There was more info out there on the Kenwood (and not all of it was great) because I think the Pioneer is newer. Basically the pioneer has no delay searching/switching tracks on the iPod like some said of the Kenwood. The installation was relatively easy even for a novice like myself. The bluetooth sounds and works great (once you get the hang of the voice activation). I replaced the factory stereo on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it sounds great. I also installed the SWI-PS so that I can use the controls on my steering wheel.
