Features
Overview: The Onkyo CS-445 is a compact audio mini-system with a
built-in CD player, AM/FM tuner, and top-mounted iPod dock. It comes with a pair
of 2-way speakers, and a wireless remote control. The white dot-matrix digital
display has a 3-level dimmer feature (normal, dim, dimmer).
Amplifier Section: The CS-445 is equipped with a two-channel digital
amplifier, which produces 40 watts per channel at 4Ω (1 kHz, 10% THD) and
20 watts per channel at 8Ω (20 Hz-20kHz, 10% THD). From the front panel and
remote, you can adjust the bass (80 Hz) and treble (10 kHz) by +/-10dB. The
Super Bass control adds +7.5dB of bass (80 Hz) when activated. The speaker
outputs feature binding posts that allow you to connect the speakers via bare
wire, pin connectors, or single banana plugs. A collar around the binding post
prevents the use of spade lugs, and the terminals are spaced too far apart for
dual banana plugs.
CD Section: The CS-445's single-disc CD player will play Audio CDs and
CD-R/CD-RW discs. Standard 12cm discs, as well as 8cm CDs can be played. It will also play back MP3 (32-320 kbps) and WMA (64-160 kbps)
files. There are 3 repeat modes (track, disc, folder), 4 play modes (normal,
random, memory, folder), and 25-track programming. The CD player features a
single-bit D/A converter. The remote control has a numeric keypad that allows
you direct access to the CD tracks.
AM/FM Tuner Section: The unit has an AM/FM tuner with 40 total presets
that can be split between each band as you desire. Presets can be named for easy
identification with up to 12 characters per name. The numeric keypad on the
remote control enables you to select a preset directly. The FM frequency tuning
interval is 0.2 MHz, while the AM interval is 10 kHz. An AM loop antenna and FM
wire antenna are included.
iPod Dock: The CS-445 includes a built-in iPod dock on the top panel
that will accommodate the Universal Dock adapters that come with most iPods and
iPhones. In addition to playing music, the unit will output video through the
composite video output. The unit takes a digital signal from the iPod for better
sound quality. Using the supplied remote control, you can access the iPod's menu for
searching and selecting music or videos, as well as control playback. The front
panel controls only allow you to play/pause, stop, and select the next or
previous track. The unit will also charge your iPod, even when in standby. The
CS-445 is compatible with the following iPods and iPhones (as of November 2011):

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change
functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may
need to reset the receiver and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If
this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or
wait until a newer software update is available.
Speakers: The CS-445 comes with a pair of D-035 2-way 4Ω speakers. The
speakers feature a 1" balanced dome tweeter and a 4" OMF (Onkyo Micro Fiber)
woofer, loaded into a bass reflex enclosure. The included black cloth grilles
are detachable. The speakers have spring clip terminals, and come with two 6'
lengths of speaker wire. Other speaker specifications include:
- SPL: 83dB (1W/1m)
- Frequency Response: 50 Hz-50 kHz
- Crossover Frequency: 7 kHz
- Dimensions: 5-3/8"W x 9-1/4"H x 8-3/4"D (9-1/8"D w/grilles)
Subwoofer Preamp Output: There is a mono RCA jack for connecting a
powered subwoofer.
Headphone Jack: For private listening, the CS-445 has a 3.5mm minijack
headphone output. When headphones are connected, the unit's speakers are muted.
When you select iPod as the input source, the headphone output is muted.
Line Input: An auxiliary audio device, such as a TV, tape deck or MP3
player, can be connected to the unit via the stereo RCA jacks on the rear panel.
Timers: The CS-445 offers four programmable timers for automated
playback, as well as a sleep timer for turning the unit off after a specified
length of time. The unit can be programmed to turn on and turn off at specific
times. Each timer can be programmed to work just once, every day, or on a range
of days. The sleep timer can be set between 90 and 10 minutes (in 10 minute
increments) with the Sleep button (on the remote), and adjusted from 1 to 99 (in
1 minute increments) using the Arrow buttons.
