Alpine

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Alpine SPS-17C2

by Ken Nail
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine's Type-S speakers combine outstanding materials and construction with an attractive price. Their efficient design provides powerful sound even when system power is low — yet beefy internal parts ensure they can handle it when you crank the volume.

But powerful output doesn't count for much if you don't like what you're hearing. The SPS-17C2 6-1/2" speakers are bound to please your ears — pivoting silk dome tweeters direct clear highs to your ears without a hint of harshness. The aluminum-coated woofer cones move freely in the air-injected rubber surrounds for full, strong, and accurate bass response.

Highlights:

  • 2-way car speakers for 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" locations (pair)
  • aluminum-coated woofer cone with air-injected rubber surround
  • 1" pivoting silk dome tweeter
  • square voice coil design and Nomex spider
  • power range: 2-50 watts RMS (250 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 35-30,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 92 dB
  • mounting tabs for use in 6-3/4" openings
  • top-mount depth: 2-1/4"
  • warranty: 1 year

    Features

Aluminum-coated Polypropylene Woofer Cones: Each speaker features an aluminum-coated polypropylene woofer. Aluminum adds strength and heat resistance to polypropylene, resulting in reduced distortion and improved reliability.

Air-injected Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use air-injected rubber surrounds.

Silk Dome Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 1" silk dome tweeter for smooth high frequencies. The tweeters are adjustable and will pivot approximately 15° to optimize imaging.

Mounting Rings: Without any adapter, the speakers fit a standard 6-3/4" opening. The supplied adapter rings allow the speakers to be installed in a standard 6-1/2" opening, a 4-hole Ford 6-1/2" opening, or an oversized GM/Chrysler 6-3/4" opening. The adapter rings have tabs that must be broken off based on the application.

    full Range

Written By Glenn, Fairport, NY on Wednesday, April 01, 2009

Good low end on these speakers. Middle tweeter pivots. Materials used
should withstand hot temps and sun light. The cones move allot due to
bass excursion when pushing them. Make sure you don't use other shallow
    speaker grills.

    Very good full range speaker

These speakers rock. They cary a full range of sound. they don't go way down deep but that is what a sub is for. I adjusted my amp to the high pass to keep the lows out of them and they go load and no distortion. great buy for the money.

    Great sound

Written By James, West TN on Tuesday, February 17, 2009

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ever so sad to see that these are discotinued, these speakers sound great in the 04 Honda Accord that I installed them in. I would not however say that these speakers are a "direct" fit replacement. It did take a little fabricating as the holes in the doors, are somewhat smaller, for making the speaker fit flush. However the speaker mounting adaptors that came with these, help out this situation alot. Still was a little of work to get them mounted to where they will fit the door panel area for the speakers, but once they were in...OHHH what a fantastic sound they brought out, far better then the factory originals. Was hoping to get some more for others!

    Fantastic!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was planning on getting a subwoofer (Alpine Type-R 12") for my car, but knew that I needed to upgrade my speakers to make sure that the mids and highs would still come through. I installed them about a month ago, and these speakers have great clarity and really brings the music to life! You will notice a huge difference in sounds quality, especially if upgrading from basic, stock speakers. Be aware that because this speaker is designed to reproduce mids and highs, you will probably get less bass response from them. This is normal. If you need/want bass, get a subwoofer -- don't try to pump it through these speakers.

All-in-all: Great quality at a great price! Also, Crutchfield includes basically everything (except tools) to make sure you've got what you need for installation -- wiring kits, adaptor plates (if necessary), and directions (real men don't need 'em!).

These are great speakers for the money. If you don't need hip-hop level bass and like to listen to jazz, R&B, folk and oldies these will be a perfect physical and audio fit for the Jeep Grand Cherokee 1994. The included kit and instructions made installation a breeze.

    Alpine SPS-17C2

Written By ctjim, Bristol, CT on Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Great Product, Great Price. The difference between the factory stock speakers and the Alpines was NOTICEABLE! I have always been an Alpine fan, and Crutchfield offered a great price on these discontinued speakers. With the economic times being what they are, the cost/value on this product is way up there. Thanks Crutchfield!

I was looking for an above average speaker to match my current Alpine car stereo. This exceeded my expectations. Good bass and excellent treble. I would definitely buy this product again and recommend it to a friend.

These speakers put out decent sound with the right source. I give the speakers 4 stars but the stock head unit 1 star. These speakers are wasted using the factory HU. The speakers do a good job of letting me know which tracks, either on a CD or via my iPod, are junk.

    Clean, distortion free sound

Written By William, Austin, Texas on Saturday, January 17, 2009
Installed in a 2001 Nissan Frontier
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these because they would fit my 2001 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab, they were recommended by Crutchfield as an easy install and because the lousey (stock) paper front speakers were split and ratteling. ... and further offered from the Crutchfield "Scratch and Dent" department for another ten bucks off. BTW, there was not a single scratch orf dent or anything mark at all on them!!

For door speakers, install was a snap. While the rear door speakers still work OK, I'm thinking about replacing them with Alpines too. In addition to the door speakers, I had already added a small (8") Audiobahn sub (w/ Kicker amp). The sub is enclosed in a small carpeted box that sits on the floor behind the drivers seat. For me, age 61, this system meets my needs perfectly and Eric Clapton, Jimmy Buffett and The Mavericks sound awesome!!

    Great Speakers

Written By Chris, Cocoa, Florida on Sunday, January 04, 2009
Installed in a 2006 Honda CRV LX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 2 pair of these speakers to replace the horrible stock speakers in my 06 Honda CRV. I had to enlarge the mounting location for the speakers and purchased the baffles to help with the sound. I ended up having to use spacers to bump the speaker and baffles out about 1/2" so they wouldn't interfere with the power window. Now, i also added two tweeters (real ones) and did some re-wiring so i could use my own 4-channel amplifier. I have the two tweeters and the two rear-door speakers running off the amp and the front-door speakers running directly from the deck (Kenwood Excelon KDC-X792). The end result is a great sounding system. Now, the bass isn't trunk-rattling, but it does sound nice. I originally wanted to try the baffles without cutting a port in them and you could tell the sound wasn't at 100%, so after about a week i took them out and cut port-holes in them and it definitely made a difference. They are still new and still sound a little tight, so i'm sure after a few more weeks, they will loosen up and sound even better.

I bought these to replace the front doors on my 07 tundra. these speakers rock. for all of those expecting to get any "low" bass on 6.5s it aint gonna happen no matter what brand or how expensive. add a sub if you want BASS. these speakers do deliver excellent mid bass and excellent mids/highs however and when coupled with an amp you will definitely be pleased. I'm runnin it with 50rms and they kick. I would definitely buy these and forget about spending more money for anything else. Crutchfield as always great service.

I replaced my VW stock speakers with these Alpines, and the difference in sound is night and day. Clear sounding music with great bass sound. I'm completely satisfied with these speakers, and for the price...you can't go wrong!
After installing these, and hearing how great the sound is, I went ahead and replaced my Pioneer DEH-470MP head unit with an Alpine CDA-9884 and the sound was even better!
I can't wait to hook up the amp to these speakers and a Sub in the trunk.
    Great Speakers!

I installed these speakers into my 2000 Nissan Frontier to replace the so-called premium speakers I ordered when I got the car. These Alpine's
installed like a breeze ( thanks to Crutchfield's tech sheet) without any modifications. The bass and mid-range is decent. A tremendous improvement over the factory set.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers for my jeep liberty and they at first sounded terrible! i figured out though that it was a pair of the speakers that were broke idk so i called crutchfield and they sent me two new ones for free and they work fine. If you dont have an aftermarket stereo i would say not to buy them because i dont think you will have enough power to make them sound good. Not much bass unless i turn my bass boost on +6 but thats not that smart. These are great speakers for people just wanting a little upgrade, GREAT for the Price!!!

At this price, its a steal, but heads up to Pilot owners

Written By William, Ashburn, VA on Friday, November 21, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these last weekend in my fiances 2004 Honda Pilot. These blow away the factory alpines. Mids and Highs are crisp and clean at any volume. The bass is not going to shake your rear view but it is refreshingly tight with no distortion. At high volumes or bass levels, they do vibrate the doors with most hip hop. For 6.5 you shouldnt be dissapointed. Replacing the factory sub this weekend anyway. Great deal for the price. She loves them and couldnt be happier with the new sound. "Factory speakers suck, huh? These sound better than the bose in our lexus" to quote her. Shes right and I think I have to upgrade that system. Cant have her car sounding better than mine.

I generally never write reviews but wanted to post this one to give Honda Pilot owners a heads up. Installation is a breeze in the front doors. Just a
few little cuts in the factory baffles to make a nice fit, anyone could do it. The rears doors are a different story. The baffle is slighter smaller, forcing
you to modify it like crazy. What a pain! If you are handy... then the price more than jusitfys the headache. However if you are taking on an install
for the first time, and arent a rig master, this may be more than you want to deal with. Consider some of the shallower 6.5s on crutchfield for the rear doors. They will install with the same ease at the front doors.

    Buy these with confidence!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had Alpine products in the past with great results, and this is no exception. I installed 4 of these in about 2 hours, and even keeping the factory head unit, the difference was profound. Music was no longer sounds, but real music, and has that awsome Alpine clarity. Don't think twice, these speakers will not let you down. If I do any more upgrades in this vehicle or any other, I will always go with Alpine.
