Our take on the Orion Cobalt CO3002

Orion's Cobalt amps provide you with the raw power that'll drive your music to new heights without emptying your bank account. These dependable amps can take some punishment, yet still deliver a clean, powerful signal that'll bring out your music's nuances and detail.

The CO3002 2-channel amplifier pumps out 60 watts RMS per channel — just what you need to drive a pair of full-range speakers or a component system. Switch over to mono mode and you can send 150 watts RMS to a sub. Variable high- and low-pass filters and a bass boost help you get the most out of your speaker system.

This compact Cobalt amp doesn't take up a lot of space, and its channeled terminal covers protect connections, hiding wires for a cleaner look. The blue illuminated strip adds a touch of style to your installation. The speaker-level inputs feature an automatic turn-on circuit, so you don't have to run a remote wire from your car stereo.

Specifications

Features

Inputs: The CO3002 offers both line-level and speaker-level inputs. The supplied speaker-level input harness allows you to connect the input to a receiver without preamp outputs, either aftermarket or factory. When the speaker-level inputs are used, a signal sensing circuit turns the amp on automatically when it receives an input. The amp turns off after approximately one minute without an input.

Internal Crossover: The amplifier's internal crossover can be set to HPF (high-pass filter), LPF (low-pass filter), or Full (full range, the crossover is bypassed). The crossover's slope is 12dB/octave and the crossover point is continuously variable from 50Hz to 500Hz.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost circuit is switchable; select a 0 dB, 6 dB, or 12 dB boost.

Tri-Mode: When using appropriate passive crossovers on all speakers, the CO3002 can power two stereo speakers (2Ω minimum with a high-pass passive crossover) and a single subwoofer (4Ω minimum with a low-pass passive crossover) simultaneously.

Power Indicator and Protection LEDs: There is a blue LED on the control panel (left side) and a blue LED bar across the top of the amp to indicate the power is on. A red LED on the control panel indicates the protection circuit has engaged and turned the amp off.

Protection Circuit: The Cobalt series has six protection circuits and the amp automatically turns off when it encounters a problem with overheating, short circuit, under voltage, over voltage, over current, or DC Offset.

Input and Output Notes

Power Connections: The power and ground inputs are set-screw terminals. They will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire and require a 3mm Allen wrench to tighten (not included). The remote turn-on input is also a set-screw terminal. It will accept up to a 10-gauge wire and requires a 2mm Allen wrench to tighten (also not included).

Note: The manual states that 4-gauge power and ground wire is recommended, however, an 8-gauge amplifier wiring kit is sufficient to cover the 25-amp fuse rating of the amplifier.

Speaker Connections: The speaker outputs are set-screw terminals. They will accommodate up to 12-gauge wire and require a 3mm Allen wrench to tighten (not included).

Specifications

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Orion for the Cobalt CO3002 amplifier comply with CEA-2006 Amplifier Power Standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

bridged for sub amp

Written By leo, CA on Monday, October 26, 2009

I picked this amp based on power per dollar. For the money it works great for a sub amp, using this to push 1 8" r/f p1 sub in my own custom box. Works great as a sub amp dont now about full range, thats why 4 stars.

Amp Install 2008 Chevy Impala

Written By elvin, East Bank, WV on Saturday, July 25, 2009

Purchased amp for wife's car. Picked this specific model due to
having "Automatic turn On Circuit" so installer would not have to run a wire
from the factory car stereo to amp to turn on amp. Amp will turn itself off
when volume is turned down low, "half way or less". Impala factory
stereos do not have a wire for remote turn on so the installer wired to 12
volt switched power. Now my amp is on all the time when the key is on.
BAD Idea. You can hear the power on in your speakers. Wasted $100 on
installation for something that wont work as advertised.
If you install with a stereo that has a wire for switched power, this is a nice
amp, just dont rely on the speaker inputs to turn on your amp correctly.
