Our take on the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4 G ED VR Lens

by Woody Sherman

Just being honest

If you've been taking pictures and video for a while, we don't need to sell you on this lens. You already know you want one. If you've come to the craft more recently, let us tell you why you, too, will want one when we're finished.

It's a light magnet — and lightweight

One of the biggest challenges for any camera (or photographer) is getting great images from a distance in low light. Many lesser zoom lenses reduce their aperture, the opening that regulates light hitting your image sensor, as they zoom in, reducing the overall light and changing the characteristics of your shot along the way. This Nikkor 70-200mm lens gets you in nice and tight across a spacious room while giving you a generous f/4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range. But that's not all. This lens does all that while giving you Nikon's third-generation image stabilization, for sharp, clean images at slower shutter speeds — up to five times slower than you'd normally use.

The spectacular optical elements you've come to expect from Nikon's Nikkor lenses are standard, of course. And while you'd expect a lens that offers this much performance to be substantial, the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR weighs in at a svelte 30 ounces, and it's only 7 inches long. And with an equivalent focal length of 105-300mm on DX-format cameras, it will serve for portraits and long telephoto tasks like sports shooting.

Bright, portable, capable, sharp. We don't see much holding you back.

    Features

Overview: The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens is a 2.9x telephoto zoom lens with an f/4 fixed aperture for high performance stills and HD videos. It is designed for use with FX/35mm format cameras, but has been optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both FX and DX-format D-SLRs. When mounted on a DX-format camera, the angle of view is reduced, and the focal length range is equivalent to 105-300mm.

Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC): Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) offers superior color performance and substantially reduced ghosting and flare, by enhancing light transmission.

Silent Wave Motor (SWM): The exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast, accurate, and quiet auto focus.

Internal Focus: Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet autofocus without changing the length of the lens, retaining working distance throughout the focus range.

Vibration Reduction (VR): Vibration Reduction (VR) reduces blur caused by camera shake, allowing shutter speeds up to five stops slower than would otherwise be the case. You can enable Vibration Reduction by switching the VR switch on the lens barrel to "on." You can further select the VR Mode to Normal or Active depending upon the degree of camera shake. When the camera's shutter button is pressed halfway, VR is activated, reducing the effects of camera shake for better framing and focus. If the camera is mounted on a tripod, it is recommended that VR be turned off.

Focus Mode Switch: The Focus Mode switch on the barrel of the lens lets you easily switch between manual focus and auto focus. If you want to enable auto focusing, the camera must be set to Auto Focus, and the switch on the lens needs to be set to "M/A". With most Nikon D-SLRs, the lens gives you a manual override option, allowing you to rotate the separate focus ring while pressing the shutter release halfway.

Focus Limit Switch: The lens features a Focus Limit Switch which determines the focus distance limits for auto focus. You can select "Full" for subjects that may be closer than 9.84' (3m), or "∞-3m" for subjects that will always be at a distance of at least 9.84'.

Lens Construction: The AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm lens is constructed of 20 elements in 14 groups, including 3 ED (Extra-low Dispersion glass) lens elements for maximum sharpness and minimum chromatic aberrations, and lens elements with the Nano-Crystal Coating to reduce ghosting and lens flare.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, which renders a more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements.

Lens Hood: The lens comes with the HB-60 bayonet-type lens hood. The hood adds approximately 1-3/4" to the overall length of the lens. You can invert the hood and snap it onto the lens for storage, if desired.

Optional Tripod Collar Ring: The RT-1 is an optional accessory tripod collar ring designed specifically for the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens. The RT-1 can be used to attach the lens to a tripod instead of attaching the camera's body directly to the tripod. This is recommended with additional support for the camera and lens is desired.

A really sharp lens, comparable in sharpness to my 24-70 f2.8 Nikkor lens. A good fit and feel on my D700, light enough to hand hold for long periods. The new VR seems to be excellent so far. A good value compared to the f2.8.
    Pros:
Very sharp, lightweight, VR works great!
    Cons:
    none

    WOW

Written By gmc4tkd, Louisville, Ky. on Tuesday, December 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Nikon 70-200 F/4 arrived less than an hour ago. Shipping to Louisville, Ky. took only three days! I quickly put the lens on my D7000 and fired off some test shots. WOW is an understatement ! The lens is quite smaller and than I was expecting but don't let this fool you. My first shots were stunning. Perfect focus and sharpness down to 1/30 second, hand held at 200mm. I wish I could post some samples. The new VR lll is for real! My D600 is in for repairs but I cannot wait to try this lens on it when I get it back. This is an absolute "BUY".
    Pros:
compact, light, great image quality, very nice bokeh, amazing VR performance, competitively priced
    Cons:
tripod collar is $200 + (but probably not necessary with VR lll) - the build could be A bit more robust however that would add weight
