Bowers & Wilkins

Our take on the Bowers & Wilkins P5

by Dave Bar

For excellent sound and comfort, try out this luxury "ride"

Whether you're riding to work, traveling cross country, or just relaxing at home, the P5 Mobile Hi-Fi headphones from Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) will bring you closer to your favorite music. Nothing but pure, natural, detailed sound without any of the "amped up" boomy bass or sizzly treble you often hear with other headphones. That's because B&W, whose professional monitor speakers are found in some of the world's finest recording studios, designed the P5s to reproduce the sound of the original recording as accurately as possible.

Headphones, angled view

Folding design

Industrial art you'll want to wear

The P5s don't look like any other headphones, either. Functional yet refined, they're crafted from aluminum, polished stainless steel, and leather — you won't find any plastic on these babies. Their soft, sheepskin-padded earcups use memory foam to conform to the shape of your ears for hours of listening comfort. The noise-isolating, closed-back design keeps the outside world where it belongs while allowing just enough ambient sound in to keep you in touch with your surroundings. And because the noise reduction is passive, no batteries or active electronics are ever needed.

Headphones with iPod

Built-in controls for iPod® and iPhone®

A remote built into the headphone cable lets you conveniently control music playback without having to dig your iPod or iPhone out of your pocket. You can even take calls on your iPhone hands-free, thanks to the in-line microphone. (See "Details" below, for a list of compatible iPods and iPhones.) The removable headphone cord attaches to just one earcup, so you won't have to deal with tangles. And the earcups fold flat to fit nicely in the supplied storage case.

From the review Bowers & Wilkins P5 headphones -- substance and style

"They were light enough for on-the-go listening with my iPod, and they did a fine job when I was ready for a serious listening session at home. Not everyone can afford a specialized set of headphones for every application (me neither). The Bowers & Wilkins P5 headphones may be made for the iPod and iPhone, but I think they're a good all-purpose choice for whatever type of listening you do — and you'll look incredibly cool wearing them, too."

    B & W P5

Written By NRS, Tulsa, OK on Wednesday, May 01, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product delivered from Crutchfield by UPS in specified time frame of three days. Packaged excellently. While I don't think of myself as an audiophile, I do love music. Although pricey the performance offsets the investment as there are times what you spend is what you get as these may be equal to higher end products.
    Pros:
Sound quality is superb for me in present state. Noise reduction is very good. Still adjusting to headphones as far as comfort goes. These are impressive!
    Cons:
But cable is delicate. Advise using a 90 degree jack for connections to sound source to ease stress on cable.

Blown away. These headphones are awesome! I was a little skeptical when I first received them and within the first couple of house experienced some discomfort, but give it about a week for these things to break in. Honestly wasn't looking to spend this much on a pair of headphones, but after trying them on I realized they're worth every penny. Had them for a few weeks and so far, so good. Styling and build quality drew me in. Comfort and the fact that these sound great with ALL types of music made me fall in love.
    Pros:
    Everything. Seriously.
    Cons:
Cord seems a little cheap and needs to be a tad bit longer, but I can deal.

    B&W P5

Written By steve62, Dallas, TX on Friday, December 21, 2012

This is the second pair I have ordered. I thought I might have gotten a defective pair the first time as the sound quality was very poor. The second pair sounds the same. You need to break these in for about 100 hours to truly evaluate as the sound improves dramatically over that period of time though still leaves much to be desired. I love the look, build quality, and isolation these provide, but I just can't approve of the sound, particularly at this price - too bad because I really want to keep these. I find the sound to be a muffled, even after break-in. There is a mid-base bias that sounds very colored, and the treble and sound stage are recessed, creating a sort of one dimensional sound quality - kind of like its coming from a cave. How you experience sound and what preferences you have will determine whether you like any headphone, and I just prefer a more natural sound. I have a new pair of Bose QE15 which i got for travel and noise cancelation, not sound quality, and they sound noticeable better than these. Judge for yourself.
    Pros:
Quality Build, portability, sound isolation, extremely comfortable
    Cons:
Very poor sound quality. Over priced.

Excellent sound quality, fit and form. I've gone through several head phones over the last few years and these have the cleanest sound quality so far.

    Great sound, great quality

Written By JohnK, Rochester, NY on Sunday, September 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are the best head phones I've ever owned. The sound quality is incredible as is the build quality. They do a very good job of eliminating outside noise but I wouldn't consider these true noise canceling cans. I tried the Bose but my ears felt like they needed to pop and the sound was just okay. They are very comfortable but it took a couple days to find the right positioning on my ears.
    Pros:
Build quality and sound - isn't that why you buy headphones?
    Cons:
Wish they folded up more compact but that's not really a "con" - I knew what they were when I ordered them.

    Truly Great MOBILE Headphones

Written By DeanM, Ontario, CA on Monday, September 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones sound as good as anything I have ever used. I use them primarily with an iPod touch, and the player has plenty of power to drive the phones and to produce extremely good sound quality for all types of music. Not overly crisp in the high end, perfect bass response for my ears, and just very balanced sound over all. They look great, feel great on my head and ears, and are just basically a classy, extremely well-built set of headphones with outstanding sound quality. My only issue, and a somewhat minor one at that, is that the cord is shorter than I would like, thus, only 4 stars for comfort. It is perfect for use with the iPod if the player is in my pocket or kept very close (on my desk by the keyboard, for instance), but if I'm not careful, and turn in my chair quickly, I pull the player off the desk. The provided 1/4" adapter for my home receiver is basically useless unless I want to stand by the receiver to use the phones, or use a separate male to female mini audio extension cable. Two or three more feet of length in the cable would really be great for my use. Regardless, I love the phones; they sound every bit as great as I expected, based on all the reviews I read prior to purchase. One other thing: I find that they sound best (great) on the iPod with no preset equalization selected, but if I use my Fiio E-6 headphone amp, the +6 EQ setting is just tremendous with the P5's. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, for their sound, their look, their feel.
    Pros:
GREAT Sound Quality!!! They look VERY COOL!!!
    Cons:
Cord is shorter than I would like for my preferred use.

    Great headphone

Written By James, Boston, MA on Wednesday, May 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Better than I expected, especially mid and high tones are so natural and clear that I feel totally different feeling to the same songs I used to listen. Bass is much better than I expected in different ways. It produces very delicate and just powerful enough sound which is great for my type of music (Jazz, Classical, and some rock). I don't know how it'll handle for those Hip-hop types of music though. Oh it also has a killer looking too:)
    Pros:
Natural sound quality. Super crisp mid tones. Look & feel. String is detachable. Comes with 2 cables one for iPod only and for others.
    Cons:
Cable. I know it is made for portable but it is somewhat short for home audio system.

I've been drooling over these for a while now and finally pulled the trigger for an upcoming trip to Europe. Top notch construction and sound quality. Cord length is perfect for leaving iPhone is front pants pocket. Replaceable cord design seems like a good marriage of minimalist design and longevity. These fit my head at their largest position. After an hour or so, the tighter fit becomes slightly uncomfortable. I'm hoping the fit "lightens" up a little with use. Otherwise, perfect cans.

    Perfect for Classical Music

Written By AndrewG, Toronto, ON on Tuesday, May 08, 2012

I spent years looking for headphones in order to enjoy classical music and gave up! The I saw the p5's and knowing the recording of the LSO and Society of Sound people, I had to try them. I put them trough the Mozart Requiem (LSO - Society of Sound) and the results were great. So much so, that at one point, I thought - 'hey! I know that sound' - I had forgotten how much LSO I had enjoyed years before. These headphones not only delivered the music, they delivered on sound. They are getting more comfortable each time I wear them. And, I am happy to say my search is over!! :)
    Pros:
Fit (I hate wearing headphones - but these are an exception! Comfort Natural sound for classical music - finally
    Cons:
None so far - still breaking them in!

    B&W P5 headphones

Written By Anonymous, Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, February 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not quite as comfortable as I would have expected. The earpads are very soft but the headphones are very snug (closing in on my head). The cord is very thin and feels cheap. The sound is pretty good but I was expecting more for the price and reviews. I'd likely skip this a second time around and stay with Grado's or Sennheiser's that are in the same (or less) price range. I'm not big on bass but, if I were, these would fall short there as well. I wish Grado's were more comfortable, I'd never look at another headphone.
    Pros:
    soft earpads decent overall sound
    Cons:
Too tight Not great on bass thin cord that could break easily overpriced

    Soft Pillows of good sound......but!!!

Written By Eli@GEM-CE, Boston, Mass on Saturday, November 05, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spend more time listening to music through headphones on an airplane than all other situations combined. So although the design is really nice, and the ear pieces are the most comfortable thing I have ever put on, the noise transfer issues make them unusable for me on the plane. Too Bad, excpt for that I loved them
    Pros:
Great soudning, incredibly smooth frequancy response. When I first put them on I felt like I just put my head in between to wonderfully soft pillows!!! Fantastic.
    Cons:
If you use them when you are flying there is a problem with them if you lay your head on the back of the seat or on the window. They seem to tranfer all of the noise right through the head band into the ear pieces. This was incrdibly dissapointing.

Excellent Headphones - but Cable Options Frustrate...

Written By Tom, Reno, NV on Wednesday, November 02, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The P5's are excellent headphones - really great sounding even if you don't have a headphone preamp (although they will sound better with a preamp). They're very comfortable and do a reasonably good job of isolating ambient noise. Bose noice cancelling headphones probably remove ambient noise a bit better - so they may perform slightly better on an airplane, but you need a battery to opeate the Bose noise cancelling 'phones. In most other environments, the P5's sound much better than the Bose products. The only complaint about the P5 is that the included cables are too short and they don't offer alternatives.
    Pros:
Very comfortable; no battery or headphone amp needed; excellent sound quality
    Cons:
Headphone cables supplied are too short and B&W doesn't sell a longer cable. Had to purchase a third party cable which is disappointing when you spend so much for headphones.

    Absolutely thrilled with my P5s

Written By LeeB, Winnetka, IL on Thursday, October 20, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My search is over! These are by far the best headphones I've used and I've tried them all. The sound quality and clarity provide for nearly transparent music and voice reproduction and is what I've come to expect from B&W. I travel regularly and was initially concerned about whether or not the noise isolating would be sufficient having used those other noise canceling headphones, but I am glad to report that I have found that I actually prefer these, being able to hear the flight announcements without having to remove my headphones. Then when I add in the fact that the sound quality is infinitely better there is no comparison. Next, let's talk about build quality. All I can say is wow, solidly built of quality materials that look great. I have even earned style points from my 13 year old son. What more can I say. You will not be disappointed.

Worth the money. These headphones are great. Not to bass heavy, and the mids and highs are wonderful and clear as ever. They seem to be put together very well, and I don't think there is any plastic on these at all ( except ipod control). They are also pretty comfy and I would recommend these to anyone who is looking for a more natural sounding pair of headphones. I am more than pleased.

Written By johnv, Strongsville, OH on Sunday, July 31, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was skeptical about the need for a 'break-in' period with the P5; but it turned out to be true. Initially the sound was bass-heavy & lacked clarity; but after about 2 weeks the sound opened up. The seal is very good & the passive noise reduction is probably 15-20 dB, which is adequate for most situations. The sound now is very good - mid-range is very clear with some roll-off in the high frequencies, bass is powerful. Very efficient, so it works well with IPods, etc. I'm more than satisfied.

By far the_ BEST_ you can purchase!!! Beats have nothing on these headphones Bose comes close but the quality over comes them too. I am the most particular person when it comes to quality and sound and I promise you can't get better!!! The sound is perfect, it has the chrisp highs, clean mids and the perfect bass!
