Sennheiser

Our take on the Sennheiser RS 170

by Dave Bar

Sennheiser's RS 170 wireless headphones make a great choice for movie and TV buffs. Their dynamic bass boost and virtual surround sound processing simulate the spaciousness and impact of a full home theater system. The comfortable, cushioned earcups sit around your ears to seal out external noise. And with a listening range of up to 260 feet, these 'phones let you roam freely throughout your living area — make popcorn during TV commercials or stay up for a late-night movie while your spouse sleeps soundly next to you.

Exceptionally "Kleer™" wireless technology
The RS 170s use Kleer wireless technology to deliver uncompressed stereo sound. Unlike other wireless technologies, Kleer delivers lossless, CD-quality digital audio, which means you won't be able to tell the difference between these headphones and your wired ones. Multi-receiver mode allows two or more people using Sennheiser Kleer headphones to listen to the same audio source, so you can easily share music, movies, or TV shows with your friends and family.

Convenient storage and easy setup
The multi-purpose transmitter keeps your headphones charged up and ready to go. It also doubles as a docking station, so you'll never forget where you put them. Wireless setup is easy — just connect the transmitter to a spare headphone jack or RCA audio output using the included cable. Then plug the transmitter into an AC power outlet. Automatic tuning does the rest, pairing with the headphones for interference-free sound.

From the review Sennheiser RS 170 wireless headphones
"Sound quality was on a par with, or better than, many wired headphones I've used in the past, and they did a solid job getting my music or video audio track to where I was, with no transmission noise or dropouts. Setting [up the RS 170] was easy — a plug and play operation and the form factor of the headphones and their stand almost seemed to invite me to use them."
— Ken Nail, Crutchfield Video Producer and A/V Writer

Overall a good headset. Battery life is good. Setup easy.
    Pros:
Great sound. Good bass when boost is on.
    Cons:
On/Off button on headset hard to find when needed since it's so close to vol buttons. Easy to turn off when wanting to adjust volume. Needs a auto on/off feature like Sony does w/ micro switch in headband. It knows when it's on your head.

Nice. Cordless Freedom. Nothing spectacular. Not a "solid" build but that may have increased its weight. Could be a little more comfy (more or better padding).

    Sennheiser RS 170 Wireless Headphones

Written By John S., Westminster, MD on Friday, March 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The RS 170 is an excellent product. Used with a TV the speech is greatly improved and the music is very good. The unit is also very comfortable and of good quality. The only downside, as stated in some other reviews, is that the volume and mute buttons are impossible to use without removing the headphones. Having done that, the functions are easy to use.
    Pros:
    Excellent product.
    Cons:
Controls difficult to use without removing the headphones.

    Same ol same ol

Written By Funkyunkie, Manhattan kansas on Sunday, February 03, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am hard of hearing and i purchased wireless headphones to help me hear speech on my TV. These headphones are the second pair I have purcheaed, the first ones were the 120, they worked well enough but brok in 6 months. I went ahead and purchased the 170's as I did not want to repeat the problem I had with the 120's. Though the 170's sound much better, they still have the same design weakness as the 120's (cheap plastic connectors holding the headphones on the headband). I would have thought for $280 they would have used metal at least somewhere in the construction. The use of plastic connectors at a majior stress point is stupid, anyone who tries to spread out the headphones wider is asking for a broken product. I know now that if I treat these like they are made of glass, they should last for a few years (hopefully). It is a shame when Sennheiser has such a very good product, and then screws it up by making it very cheaply.
    Pros:
Excellent sound quality these makes it easy to understand recorded voices, ease of use, very comfortable fit, excellent range.
    Cons:
Very cheap plastic construction. Easy to snap off (break) the earphone when adjusting. Awkward placement of controls on the earpiece, you have to remove headphones completely to make adjustments to the sound output.

    Alright Headphones

Written By Jim L, Yarmouth, ME on Sunday, January 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using these for a little over a year now. I bought them to replace my 900 mhz headset, which I was very happy with for many years. I agree with all the comments on having to take headset off to press buttons. I find the surrond sound button ineffective and the bass button doesnt do a whole lot. I use these for movie listening late at night. I find when it comes to action movies the speakers get distorted at a medium volume level...kind of dissapointing for what they cost. Would not recommend to a friend.
    Pros:
    Comfort, charging, distance
    Cons:
speaker quality, operating buttons while wearing

    Problem Solved

Written By Judy A, Hamilton, Mi. 49419 on Saturday, December 22, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely wonderful. Gift for my husband who doesn't hear very well and was always missing what was being said during a movie or tv program. I'm a grateful wife who hears very well and is now never asked what was said and winds up missing parts of the program to explain to my husband what he missed. These wonderful head phones were actually a gift for both of us. People I talked to at Crutshfield were very kind and helpful.
    Pros:
Husband can turn sound up as loud as he wants and I can't hear a thing from the earphones. I can now have the tv at a reasonable sound to suit me.
    Cons:
So far no negatives at all.

    Sennheiser RS 170

Written By springcanyon, Twisp, WA on Friday, December 07, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With just a little more thought, a good headset could have been a great headset. The volume controls and on/off controls are located in close proximity. That makes it very difficult to adjust the sound level by feel. Putting the on/off switch right between the up/down volume controls was a poor choice. This design could have been better.

    Sennheiser RS 170

Written By Steve, Benton, AR on Thursday, August 30, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I reviewed many wireless sets of headphones from $100 to $600. I thought I would give the Sennheiser RS 170 a chance. After all I could send them back if I didn't like them. My wife goes to bed early so I thought I would used the headphones then. Well, I wear them all the time. The bass and surround sound is beyond excellent. Comfort, style, and range are too. This is the first Sennheiser product I have bought and I'm very happy.
    Pros:
Excellent sound reproduction Great reception range Excellent Bass and Surround Very comfortable even on extended wearing of headphones
    Cons:
The only improvement I would like is better tactical feel for the side buttons.

RS-170 Sound Great but with Some Limitations

Written By LR, SD on Friday, July 13, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far they have performed flawlessly and it wasn't to difficult to get two sets of headphones to sync to the transmitter. The big test is yet to come, when we move them into the RV for the trip to Kansas Speedway and the NASCAR race.
    Pros:
Sounds good and I think the Bass Boost and the Surround added that extra touch.
    Cons:
The Power and Volume switches do leave something to be desired. Like others have stated, you almost need to take them off to make sure you are pushing the right buttons.

    Works well But

This is my third try with this unit. The first failed in the stereo mode sound just dropped out, second unit sound dropped out on one side. This unit so far has worked well except that I am experiencing a cutting out when it is first powered up as though it were going through a seeking mode. I'm hoping the unit continues to work.
    Pros:
    Nice when it starts working
    Cons:
Being as this is my third such unit makes me wonder about quality

I will be returning the RS-170s. We had trouble syncing with receiver and TV. When we did get the units syncd we had busy/high pitched noise
    Cons:
No advantage over our wired headphones (had to run wire from TV or receiver (not worth it). Had trouble syncing units (repeatedly)

Class-leading wireless sound with just a few limitations

Written By Ed, Albany, NY on Saturday, April 14, 2012

I've been using the Sennheiser RS 170 wireless headphones for over 18 months now, and while it took me a short while to fall in love with them, today they're the home theater accessory that I simply cannot live without. They provide clean, enveloping sound when listening to music or movies, with wire-free convenience to boot!

The quality of the RS 170's wireless signal needs to be heard to be believed. Background noise and hiss is all but nonexistent, and I was able to get 75 feet of distance between myself and the transmitter base station before experiencing any dropouts. Battery life is excellent and the charging cradle makes recharging easy and convenient.

It should be stated that while the RS 170 headphones are said to feature a surround enhancement mode, this isn't going to replace an existing 5.1 home theater system nor does it come close to the performance of proprietary technologies like SRS or Dolby Headphone. I found that it was far less fatiguing to turn this feature off, even when watching surround sound-heavy action movies. Dialogue, sound effects and ambient were so much clearer and better defined with regular stereo listening.

My only real disappointment with the RS 170s are their limited connectivity options. I would have loved to have seen a digital input and integrated Dolby Digital/DTS decoding at this price. Still, it's hard to argue with wireless sound that's this clean. I highly recommend them.
    Pros:
    - Outstanding sound quality - Clean wireless signal - Great range (over 75 feet indoors) - Good battery longevity with convenient recharging
    Cons:
    - Limited connectivity options - Bass boost muddies sound quality - Surround sound feature not particularly effective - No native surround decoding (DD or DTS)

These wireless headphones are very comfortable and have excellent sound quality. I use them for watching TV while my significant other reads in the same room. They sound better than the actual TV speakers. And, they were cheaper than I could find anywhere else, including the manufacture's website!
    Pros:
Excellent sound Quality , including surround sound!
    Cons:
    None so far.

    RS170 - Stunning Wireless Performance

Written By AndyH, Clovis, CA on Saturday, January 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having tried digital wireless stereo headphones several years ago (and they weren't inexpensive!), and not being impressed then, I was a little nervous spending a lot of money to see if technology has improved much since then. Wow, was I amazed at the improvement! I have several wired Sennheiser headphones, and I am glad I tried their wireless set. The sound blew me away, and this is even in a home environment with a lot of wireless devices and an 802.11 wireless netork all of which operate on the same frequency as the headphones. No interference, no dropouts, just pure amazing sound - hard to distinguish from wired headphones for some listening material such as the TV. I highly recommend this product; it's hard to imaging getting any better than this without spending a LOT more money. Note: My LG TV does not have RCA audio out connectors, so I use the optical digital output from the TV and use a GefenTV Digital Audio Decoder (very small and discrete) to convert to connect them and it works flawlessly.
    Pros:
Sound, build quality, comfort, ease of use, styling
    Cons:
    None

The best wireless headphones.. good fit, sound is excellent. Crisp and clear, with or without surround. Bass reproduction is adequate. My set is plugged in a Onkyo surround system, can adjust bass and treble if needed. Awesome !
    Pros:
Sound adjustments on headphones. Easy to use, rechargeable dock. Long range wireless signal.
