Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Our take on the JVC CS-BB2

by Ken Nail

Craving bass but strapped for space? Put JVC's CS-BB2 compact powered subwoofer to work in your car. This self-contained bass solution will do wonders for your sonic experience even when you've got little room to spare.

The slim silver and black cabinet houses a 6" subwoofer and a conservatively-rated 32 watts RMS x 2 amplifier. The cabinet measures in at a mere 2-1/2" high, making it ideal for mounting under a car seat, or on the back wall of a pickup truck cab. A low-pass filter tailors the bass output to enhance your music, while the included wired volume control gives you fingertip control of the bass volume.

Speaker- and preamp-level inputs allow you to hook the CS-BB2 to almost any car system. A power and connection harness is included.

  • 6" dual voice coil woofer

    Features

Overview: The JVC CS-BB2 is a compact Powered 6" woofer that can be easily installed under the driver or passenger seat of a variety of vehicles. It is so small you can even install it under many powered seats. It makes a perfect fit for pick-up trucks, convertibles, cargo vehicles and family vehicles that cannot give up trunk space.

Driver: The CS-BB2 uses a 6" dual voice coil woofer to add better bass response to your vehicle that has limited room for adding a subwoofer or amplifier.

Amplifier: The CS-BB2 uses a 32 watt RMS x 2 channel amplifier to give you clear, accurate bass response from the enclosed 6'' woofer.

Enclosure: The amplifier and woofer are housed in a small enclosure that only measures 2.5" tall which makes it very versatile and easy to use even in the most compact of vehicles.

Wired Remote Control: The wired remote control allows you to turn the CS-BB2 subwoofer's output off and on. The wired remote also allows you to adjust the subwoofer output level so you can dial in more bass when you need it.

Note: Do not place the remote controller where it will be exposed to direct sunlight. When using the wired remote, deactivate all sound adjustment functions except volume level; otherwise, the sound may be distorted.

L.P.F. (Low Pass Filter) Switch: You can turn the low pass filter off if your receiver is equipped with a built in low pass filter output.

    Crossover Frequency:

    • L.P.F/"ON": 20 Hz to 200 Hz

    • L.P.F/"OFF": 20 Hz to 500 Hz

Phase Switch: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer to match the existing speakers in your vehicle. Switch to the position that gives you the best sound.

Speaker Level In: The unit has speaker level inputs so you can hook the CS-BB2 to your factory radio without any additional adaptors.

    Connections

    Connections:

    • Line In: stereo RCA jacks to hook up to your aftermarket deck that has pre-amp outputs
    • Speaker/Power In: 9-pin jack for use with supplied speaker/power input harness
    • Cont. (Control): female mini-jack input for the wired remote control unit

    Great Compact Subwoofer

Written By Tom, San Antonio, Tx on Tuesday, September 15, 2009

I recently purchased the JVC CS-BB2 and am very happy with it. It is very compact and fits under my flipdown drink holder in my dodge Ram 1500. The mounting location made the install a snap and the sound is not ditorted by being under the seats. I connected it to my Sony head unit and removed the remote control as my headunit controls it better thru my subwoofer rca outputs.

I did have to adjust my low pass filter to 80htz and my high pass filter to 80htz (for my infinity door speakers) to make the system sound incredible. This is truly a great product and completes my sound system for very crisp, clear and clean sounding music.

I just needed bass to complete the sound, and this little sub did the trick. I installed it under the passenger seat of my 1999 Toyota Tacoma and it will produce more bass than needed. Well worth the money and time spent installing.

    INCREDIBLE VALUE!!!

Written By lunchbox660, sunny california on Wednesday, November 07, 2007

I recently purchased two of these little beauties to fill in the lower end freqs for my car. I used to be really into the huge sound of huge subs, but i did not want to sacrifice my space in my new car, so this was a great alternative for me. I read all the reviews on the product and quite frankly i am shocked that some people would have the audacity to complain that this product doesnt provide the super loud, deep punch of a big sub. of COURSE it doesnt, its not supposed to, its not that kind of sub. BUT what it DOES do is really fill in the void of sound where the factory installed or even an aftermarket pair of door/deck speakers leaves off. my car has 6 1/2" speakers all around, and even they do not provide me with enough bass, but this unit adds that much missed tone. i firmly beleive that for the money, you will not find ANY better product that is in the same category. they tuck neatly under my seat where i am not using the space anyway, and give me a sound that i am VERY pleased with for the dollar :) i highly recommend them to the budget oriented consumer who wants just a little more oompf in there system without sacrificing space.

Simple science or consider the alt.

Written By Ian, Riverside, CA on Tuesday, October 23, 2007

I bought it. I heard bad reviews. I heard good ones. You will get $150 worth of bass easy. It won't rattle things. The sound will be cleaner for it. You won't go deaf. These are mostly good things to be said. It has an on and off switch. I get upset when its off. I have had it for a year and I panic if it accidentally get switched off. I miss it that much. It is a very good subwoofer.

I have had amps that cost twice what this costs. I have had sub speakers that cost about twenty dollars more than this cost; a piece. All in all a 1000 dollar system might make you twice as happy and take three times the work and last weeks before everyone in the neighborhood knows what you have and steals it. If you buy more than this get theft insurance and plan on redoing your entire system because your subs got everything else stolen. I say save it for the big screen.

    Clear as mud!

Written By Maestro, Arlington, VA on Wednesday, October 17, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been advised that this subwoofer would fill in the bass void for my fantastic Boston Acoutics speakers so that I could distinguish a string bass from a tuba from a tympani. It was not intended to serve as a thumper. But, it only gives a hint of these instruments. Piano bass is likewise poorly defined. The only thing going for it are price, size and built-in amp. In spite of the installer's comment that my head unit could control it without the remote, I found that it was essential to plug the remote in and locate on conveniently on top of the hand brake in order to take any advantage from this sub.

Adequate for its size, but not for bass thumpers

Written By Lee, Boston area on Thursday, August 16, 2007

I had my folks pick this up for me for my birthday. Installation was a snap with the included wiring harness. I've got it running off a Alpine HU with RCA cables for the inputs. It actually squeezes under the seat in my 2006 Mazda Miata. The sound output is noticable and does add to the bottom end of my music. I can feel the bass coming up through the seat, which is kind of cool. But don't expect it to rattle your windows or mirrors because it can't. Is it worth the price? Only if nothing else will fit. Otherwise I'd suggest another option.

    I don't recommend it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is not really a subwoofer, in the usual terms one thinks of as a subwoofer. The main reason to get a subwoofer is that the 6x9 speakers can only handle a certain amount of bass before making that annoying "ploc" noise that happens when the speakers receive more bass than they can handle. Thus the need for a subwoofer that can handle that extra bass without going "ploc" on you. Also, 6x9s are decent at reproducing bass in the 100 Hz area but not at anything lower than that, and subwoofers are good to compensate for that drop. But this model doesn't do a decent job in either area, it still "plocs" when the bass is too loud, and it doesn't reproduce lower bass frequencies than a 6x9 speaker. It does well in the 100 Hz area and anything lower drops considerably. This is only worth it if you for some reason can't have 6x9 speakers in the back and you only have tiny speakers and need some bass, then that's the only situation where this item could be worthwhile.

    This tiny sub sounds great

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Without having much cargo or trunk space in my 2005 Prius, I chose this unit to be installed under the front seat (passenger). Installation went pretty easily, and I'm impressed with the sound. As long as the seperate sub volume control is not set too high, I get exactly what I wanted; rich, full sound with bass that is not over powerering or sounding too "punchy" . Be sure to try the different phase switch settings for the best sound. I definitely like having the remote power / volume controller (and yes, it is needed depending on what type of music you are playing). Now that I have my sub, along with the Infinity door speakers I installed earlier, my little Prius with the factory stereo sounds quite impressive!

I don't have much room, much money, or much need for bass that draws attention. I wanted something that would add depth to my new sound system, and I got it in a major way! Fits great under the seat of my 2003 Ford Ranger ext. cab, and as I said adds the vital low end to my favorite pop and rock tunes. I feel it's a must have for 30 and 40 somethings like me.

    Perfect for my '06 TJ

Written By john, Colorado on Monday, June 04, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I considered the Kenwood KSC-SW1, but after reading the reviews I decided I needed a smaller box to fit under the driver seat. The JVC CS-BB2 fits perfectly between the slider rails without blocking my rear passenger's toes. I bolted it in (removed seat to drill the holes) but I bet it would not slide if you relied on Velcro alone.

My HU is an Alpine CDA-9883 and I'm feeding the sub with 8 feet of Monster RCA cable. I have Kicker 05KS52 5-1/4"s in the dash (adapter plates from another vendor) and Infinity Reference 6012si 6-1/2"s in my sport bar sound pods.

I listen to classic & modern rock, folk, classical -- nothing that thumps. This sub does exactly what it claims. It adds precisely what I was missing, right in the seat of my pants (literally!). As others have stated, this isn't gonna garner attention from your vehicular or pedestrian neighbors, but if you own a 4-speaker TJ, you'll finally be able to enjoy your tunes above 50mph with the top down.

    Jeep Wrangler installation

Written By Kerry, North Coast on Thursday, May 24, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This subwoofer works great in my '01 Wrangler. I had already installed a Blaupunkt stereo, so hooking the subwoofer up was a breeze. Two hot wires, one ground wire and a (not included) RCA cable and I was rockin.
Since I only had four 5" speakers in the Jeep it was seriously lacking bass, especially with the top off. This subwoofer easily adds more than enough bass - and with the (wired) remote it's easy to adjust to the perfect level on the fly. I don't think I ever turn it up past half way. It's not a thumper per se, but I don't listen to thumpin' music and frankly I'm grateful that it doesn't rattle the neighbors windows. What it does do is add nice warm bass to my metal, rock, classic rock and blues cds. It's exactly what I was hoping for and priced right. It fits under the Jeep seat fairly well too. It seems to be solid as a rock and doesn't rattle at all so far. Rock on.

    Better Than Expected

Written By Chipp, Kansas City, MO on Saturday, May 19, 2007

I'm a fairly picky music and asthetics fan. In my truck I don't have too much space and the stock speaker spaces don't allow for too much flexibility (4x10 rear 5 1/4-6" doors) so I read all the reviews & specs of the small powered subs and the JVC, although the smallest would fit snugly either under the drivers seat or against the back wall of the cab while still allowing use of the rear jump seats. The fit is perfect! It's mounted behind the passenger seat between the side wall and the jack enclosure. the amp for my system is mounted behind the drivers seat. As all the reviews said, this little thumper does very well with all but rap & some hip-hop. I'm not much into shaking foundations, so the JVC fills in the low end nicely and is adjustible through my Kenwood Excelon head unit. Installation was a breeze (I kinda cheated - I tapped power & remote turn on from my existing amp and upped the fuse size.) All in all, a very nice little sub - Highly recommended!

    JVC CS-BB2

Written By christopher, Danbury CT on Thursday, May 17, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an 04 Wrangler and the sound system needed some updating so after I purchased a Pioneer deck with Polk speakers front and rear it sounded much better but was still missing something. My Jeep did not have the factory sub so I wanted something small. I gave the JVC a try and was really not expecting much. I was very much surprised on how it filled in where the speakers were missing. This is by no means a high powered sub so if you want spleen shaking bass you need to look elsewhere. If you are looking for a great sounding sub and don't need to be heard a block away, I would really recomend this.

    Great Sub for Small Footprint

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this in my 2001 Isuzu Vehicross and I am very impressed! I knew that this was not going to be the kind of sub that rattles the windows as I come down the street but for adding more depth without taking up precious cargo area this is prefect. I was able to install this right under the drivers seat without any trouble. The hook up was very easy (I have a JVC KD-AVX2)no problems. The 5.1 works awesome with DVD's a very good match. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a little more base without sacrificing any room.

Small Sub for a small car

Written By captainbk, Florida on Monday, April 23, 2007

I drive a Honda S2000. Even with upgraded head unit and speakers the car never had good bass sound. Adding a conventional sub to such a small car means loosing even more space in the trunk and eliminating the spare tire just for the sub-woofer amp. I wasnt willing to make those sacrifices.

When I saw the CS-BB2, I knew it would fit perfectly under the drivers seat of the S2000. I was right, a perfect fit.

The sound is great with my Pioneer head unit and no additional amplification, although I think it would do well with up to 60 watts per channel if you want additional volume.

No, it's not the 10" in the trunk as far as thump but hey, I can still carry my golf clubs and be ready to change a flat tire. Major thumbs up for this product. I think you will be selling alot of these to the S2000 community.

    Good Little Unit

Written By Russell, Milton-Freewater, OR on Wednesday, April 11, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was installed with my new head unit and speakers in my 99 Ford Ranger ext.cab. Since I didn't want to loose any space behind the seat, this unit fit nicely under the pass. seat. Easy installation. I am over 40, still listen to hard rock, like decent bass with my music, but, don't need to rattle the windows a block away. This unit was everything I asked for and more! Good bass, at a reasonable listening volume. A little muddy at extreme volume, but I wouldn't listen to my music at that volume. If you have limited space, want good bass at a resonable volume, don't need to rattle the windows a block away, then this unit fits the bill perfectly. Highly recomended!

    Surprisingly Good Little Thumper

Written By Dave, from Houston, Texas on Thursday, April 05, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed bass but couldnt give up the space. I had only one spot left in my 2006 Toyota Matrix, and that was under the drivers seat. Since I needed my rear seat passengers to be able to get their toes under my front seats, the JVC CS-BB2 was called to duty.

I have a JVC KD-G430 head unit that is driving four 6-1/2" Alpine SPS-171A door speakers as well as providing output to the JVC CS-BB2 "sub"-woofer. All bought from Crutchfield over the last year.

Luckily, my JVC head unit has RCA line-outs that can be selected as subwoofer outputs. That means I can adjust the cutoff frequency at the head unit to "Low - 90 Hz", "Mid - 135 Hz", or "High - 180 Hz. Also, the JVC head unit voltage output to the subwoofer can be adjusted to meet the JVC CS-BB2 requirement of no greater than 2 volts.

I think these adjustments are important to get the best out of this little subwoofer. From trying this subwoofer hooked up as regular line out speakers, the results were not as great. Still better than no subwoofer at all, just not optimum.

Now, this JVC subwoofer does have its limitations. Those limitations are really low, mega air moving bass that is in most hip hop music. I believe those notes just require massive amounts of power, driving a speaker with lots of surface area to be able to produce those ultra lows with any kind of loud volume. You can hear those notes in the JVC, it just can't make them loud.

ANY other music choice you have and this thing will thump very well indeed.

For its size and price, I give it 5 stars.

When you consider its size, I give it 5 stars for sound, too.

    Poor frequency response!

Written By Ozz, El Paso, Texas on Friday, March 30, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read the rave reviews and was a bit skeptical. I didnt expect glass-rattling bass, only a supplement to a factory Honda radio in an Odyssey. I was also strapped for space. So I went out on a limb and purchased the JVC CS BB-2 powered sub. Installation was as simple as this type of installation can be! Everything except sufficient wire taps were included. Also, running the power cable through the fire wall with an in-line fuse was a bit tricky, but nothing a set of bullet plugs coulnt fix. These two things were the only complication in the installation process (realtively minor, I think).

So I powered up the sub. I soon found out that the frequency response curve is very poor. And the gain just makes it worse. I get good response down to about 120Hz (my guess), and then as frequencies drop...almost nothing. I didnt need support at 120 Hz. I needed/expected support at least to 60Hz, would have been very satisfied at 40Hz, and elated had the sub responded to the rated 20Hz.

Installation was great (fives stars there), but sound (not to be confused with volume) is where it counts. I only gave the sub two stars for its ease of use, installation, and efficiency of space. Otherwise the rating would have been lower.

To summarize, I gave it a chance; I left it in the van for two weeks. The wife stated that the factory radio sounded better without it than with it. I agree. Im sending it back on Monday.

The only reason I took a chance on this sub was because it was from Crutchfield. If I didnt like it I could send it back. Thanks Crutchfield, I wouldnt hessitate to order from you all again.

    p.s. 1st return in over 10 yrs.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted more bass and was not willing to give up valuable space in my vehicle. I drive a coupe, and this sub fit under the front part of the passenger seat, such that when the seat is forward to let people get in the back, you can still not see it. The bass is definately there, filling in some of the lower frequencies that my door speakers can not reach. It is not going to rattle your trunk, but if you want more full spectrum sound without giving up space this thing is great!
