Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-133BT

by Zak Billmeier
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Talk hands-free, plus stream music with Bluetooth®
Other devices may come and go, but one thing's for sure — you never leave home without your phone. The Alpine CDE-133BT CD receiver lets you talk hands-free, plus stream music from a compatible phone, all without messy wires.

Advanced Bluetooth features
Have you ever tried to talk to someone, but been unable to understand them because their in-car Bluetooth just didn't cut it? Your callers will hear you loud and clear with the CDE-133BT fielding your calls. First, you can mount the included microphone somewhere in front of you so it'll have no problem picking up your voice. Next, the receiver lets you adjust the mic's gain to best match your speaking voice. You can also tweak the phone output and ring volume, so you won't go diving for the volume knob every time someone calls.

When a call comes in, you'll see your caller's phone number on the screen. You can answer the call by tapping the CDE-133BT's phone button, or set up the receiver to answer all calls automatically. If someone else calls in, just tap the "2" key to activate call waiting.

Stream your tunes, too
If your phone or another device supports Bluetooth music streaming, you can beam your tunes and control playback with the CDE-133BT. Alpine's Sound Expansion technology helps your streaming tunes sound their best.

Great for your iPod® and iPhone®
You can use the CDE-133BT's controls to navigate your iPod's music library, thanks to a convenient front-panel USB input. The person riding shotgun will love Passenger Control Mode, which lets them play DJ while you focus on driving. And let's not forget about what made Alpine famous in the first place — great sound quality. You can adjust your sound to taste with one of the ten equalizer presets or by using the 3-band parametric EQ.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Alpine, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Plus (powered by Parrot): The Alpine CDE-133BT features built-in Bluetooth technology powered by Parrot. The CDE-133BT supports Bluetooth (version 3.0) hands-free communication & audio streaming for the iPhone & other Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones/devices. Hands-free communication is possible from the Alpine head unit when using a HSP (Head Set Profile) & HFP (Hands-Free Profile) compatible Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Wireless audio streaming is possible from the CDE-133BT when using a A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) & AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile) compatible Bluetooth enabled mobile device.

Pairing: The Alpine CDE-133BT can be paired to up to five Bluetooth enabled mobile devices (only one device can be used at a time). Not all Bluetooth mobile phones will be compatible. Parrot software updates provide support for future phones.

External Microphone with Noise Cancellation: The included external microphone (with visor-clip) allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free, while the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers. The CDE-133BT features a noise cancellation function to ensure that your calls are heard clearly. You can adjust the microphone's volume level from 0 to 7. You can also mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep).

Placing Calls: The Alpine CDE-133BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine CDE-133BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.

      • Voice Dialing: If you have a voice-dial capable phone, you can dial a phone contact by simply speaking the name of your contact.
      • Phonebook (with ABC search): Up to 1,000 entries (5 telephone numbers for each name) can be downloaded from your compatible mobile phone. You can select the first 3 call letters (ABC) to search for a desired name in your phonebook.
      • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
      • Call History: The 80 previously dialed, received, or missed numbers can be retrieved and dialed from memory.

Receiving Calls: The Alpine CDE-133BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.

      • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
      • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
      • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.

Call Switch: This function allows you to initiate the transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

Text Message Alert: The CDE-133BT can give you a notification on the display with a blinking mail icon indicator for 30 seconds while receiving a text message. The mail icon indicator will remain on if there is an unread message on a connected mobile phone. You cannot send a text message using the head unit's controls.

Audio Streaming: The Alpine CDE-133BT can stream music from you Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device. Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. Basic playback functions include - Play, Pause, & Skip (Previous/Next).

Note: Bluetooth Firmware Update v01.27.00 is required for Bluetooth control and song information display from an Apple iOS 6.0+ device.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Adjustments: You can customize the sound of your Bluetooth hands-free experience to fit your own preferences. You can adjust the CDE-133BT's mic gain, phone output, & ring tone volume. If that's not enough, there are 5 sound quality settings to choose from to get the balance just right for you. This flexibility will make your phone calls a pleasurable experience.

      • Volume Adjustments: You can emphasize or weaken the volume level of phone call, the ring tone, and the microphone input to fit your own preference. The Phone Talk Level, Ring Tone, & Mic Gain are all adjustable between -5 to + 5 dB.

I put this in a 99 Yukon Denali and it made the Bose speakers sing true. If you have Bose speakers no need to add a box as you will get plenty of boom from the built in amp from deck. I just ordered same deck for my 98 caddy deville concours
      Pros:
Bluetooth music playing through Bluetooth Ease of set up instructions Price Delivery (2 days in NC ) Microphone for Bluetooth
      Cons:
Conversation from Bluetooth comes thru all speakers so turn volume down lol

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield recomended this product to me and it has been a success. I own an old explorer that I use quite a bit for various things, however it isn't my everyday driver. I got used to hands free calling and using my iphone for music in my other vehicles so I wanted the same features in the explorer. Surprisingly everything works as advertised. The hands free calling even works great. Everyone I talk to seems to be able to hear me just fine with no interference (had to adjust the mic gain). The iphone operation is pretty easy to use as well. The only flaw is the size of the buttons, but there isn't much you can do about that considering the size of they have to work with. I still haven't figured out how to connect my music through bluetooth but I really haven't had the need for it. I rather plug it into the usb and keep my phone charged anyway.
      Pros:
Hands free calling works well pretty simple to operate functions on iphone for music.
      Cons:
size of buttons Wish it came with a remote that had the functions of an ipod so you could operate the music without taking your eyes off the road.

Unfortunately, when I first turned on the ignition after the device was installed, the CD player made a strange clicking noise, like there was something in there. I called support and they shipped out a replacement unit that day, and it arrived 2 days later. This unit replaced another Alpine that I bought from Crutchfield in 2006. There was nothing wrong with it. I just wanted the modern features like Bluetooth and a USB port. For the price this is a great unit. I've used the hands-free calling. Used a USB thumbdrive in it. Played Pandora from my smartphone on it. Everything works great, and this unit has as much power as the Alpine I bought in 2006 for $350.
      Pros:
Plenty of power and features for the money.
      Cons:
Nothing, other than the first unit was defective.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought a more expensive car radio but was VERY disappointed. I was not disappointed by Crutchfield's service. The more expensive unit was difficult to use and finally started resetting by itself after a few months.

The alpine 133bt was over $100 cheaper but it has delivered reliable service. This unit works as it should. The radio allows scan to station and tune to a specific frequency. I don't need an external controller to tune the radio to a specific frequency.

I only use the radio and USB input and have no comment about the bluetooth, and cd drive, The USB device has some restrictions on number of folders and number of files but nothing that you can't easily resolve
      Pros:
      IT WORKS!
      Cons:
      Nothing worth noting

Fairly easy to install, need to get longer screws than the ones provided due to the plastic mounting bracket (vice the metal one already with my car). It was fustrating but call tech support and they advised me of this. Not a big deal once I got the correct screws.
      Pros:
Easy install. Bluetooth phone connection. Easy Bluetooth setup.
      Cons:
Has a clock, but can't figure how to get it to show on the screen. Doesn't always make the Bluetooth connection, just reset the BT on the phone and good to go.

Everything is great. Let me start off with Crutchfield before I rate the Alpine CDE-133BT. I ordered this item from Alpine on a Tuesday. The system said the deck was out of stock. I received the deck on Wednesday. Installed it on Saturday. everything necessary to install it was their. So I have to thank Crutchfield for outstanding service and price. The deck installed very easily. After connection the Bluetooth worked without any problems. Actually the next time I got in my car and I was driving when a phone call came through it worked perfect. The stereo sounds good but, it did expose my factory speakers. So I will need to update those very shortly. I've had Alpine products before and I've always been satisfied with their performance.
      Pros:
      Easy installation, easy operation. seamless.

      Great Product, Great Service

I could not be happier with this stereo; I bought the stereo along with four speakers(Kenwood) to replace my OEMs and after installing the stereo decided to keep the OEM speakers because it made the sound quality so much better. Easy to use and easy to connect over BT. Had one problem with wiring and called Crutchfield Tech Support; they were more than happy to help and offered a fast solution.
      Pros:
Easy to use, easy to connect, great interface, cool look, sounds AMAZING

Replaced stock head unit and speakers. This Alpine 133bt is a awesome improvement to my 10 year old truck. Also the speakers I got were Polk replacement, a great combo.
      Pros:
Bluetooth works excellent and navigation isn't too bad. Really like the rubber wrap on the volume control, doesn't slip with dry skin conditions. Very much worth the money.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sound Quality of this receiver is only marginally better than my 2001 Subaru stock stereo. The hands-free Bluetooth is very nice and sounds a million times better than my old visor hands-free device. Overall I am not terribly disappointing because I like the hands-free calling function as well as the ability to stream radio though my phone directly to the stereo without wires (cool!). the price is ok, but considering the sound is not much better than my stock stereo, I would expect to pay less for this device. I also purchased Alpine SPS-610C component speakers. HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!! The base is a fraction of what my stock speakers produced and the clarity was only marginally better than the stock Subaru component speakers. Extremely frustrated that I put so much much money and time into the system for only a slightly better clarity and LESS bass output.

The Crutchfield harness and info sheet were very good. My dissatisfaction is not with Crutchfield.
      Pros:
      Wireless Bluetooth capability
      Cons:
sound quality and power not much better than my old stock system

2002 Ford Explorer. Swapped out the factory radio because I wanted hands-free calling. My first aftermarket install. Made a couple of rookie mistakes, so it took longer that I expected; about 2 hours in all. Very happy with the results in the end. Love the Bluetooth audio and USB port. The kids love the iPod capability. Crutchfield is the way to go.
      Pros:
All the audio input options you could want and at a great price.
      Cons:
The Bluetooth has gotten confused on a couple of occasions, requiring that I power off the radio.
