Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Our take on the ZVOX IncrediBase 575

by Kristen Schaub

The ZVOX IncrediBase 575 gives you a simple way to add powerful, spacious sound to your TV without having to make room in your living area for a conventional five-speaker home theater system. This single sturdy enclosure houses five full-range speakers and a pair of high-output woofers, to pump up your favorite TV shows and movies with detailed sound and bass that reaches all the way down to 35 Hz. Built-in amplification means you won't need to connect a separate receiver or run wires to any external speakers. The Z-Base 575 is designed to serve as a base for most flat-panel TVs with screen sizes up to 65". And setup couldn't be simpler — there's just one cable to plug into your TV.

Virtual surround sound from a single speaker
The Z-Base 575 creates virtual surround effects by manipulating the phase and timing of each channel, sending signals to separate drivers at the appropriate moment. This expands the soundstage and tricks your ears into thinking that sounds are coming from points throughout your room. Control the Z-Base 575 from your favorite chair with the included remote. Signal-sensing on/off circuitry automatically powers the system on and off along with your TV.

    Features

Overview: The ZVOX Z-Base575 is a single-cabinet audio system for use with TVs, iPods and other MP3 players, and PCs. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue virtual surround sound processing to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

Placement: Most 40"-65" flat panel TVs can be placed directly on the Z-Base575. The TV should be 140 pounds or less and the base should not exceed 35" wide x 16.5" deep.

PhaseCue: The proprietary PhaseCue virtual surround sound system manipulates the phase of the separate channels to fool the ear into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. You can control the size of the sound stage and the amount of virtual surround effect using the included remote control. Dynamic soundtracks from movies and live recorded music programs provide a rich, 3-dimensional sound, while the surround effect is somewhat less with TV programs and newscasts.

Note: While the surround experience isn't the same as high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much more pleasing than simply using the TV's built-in speakers.

Speaker Configuration: The ZVOX Z-Base575 uses five Ferrofluid cooled 3.25" main speaker drivers with neodymium magnets. The drivers use the Infinite Compliance system, which connects the outer two speakers with an acoustic tube, to create a big sound from a small cabinet. The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing the unit to be placed near a CRT TV or monitor.

Subwoofer: In addition to the five main speakers, the Z-Base575 has two down firing high-mass, long-throw 6.5" subwoofer in a ported enclosure. The bass output is equivalent to a 10" external powered subwoofer. An optional powered subwoofer can be connected via the single rear-panel RCA output. The subwoofer output is full range.

Power Output: The ZVOX Z-Base575 has a built in 133 watt amplifier that drives all of the speakers.

Cabinet: The ZVOX Z-Base575 has an MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) wood cabinet.

Auto Power: The Z-Base575 has an auto-on/off power circuit. The power automatically turns on when an audio signal is sensed (the power LED changes from green to blue). When you turn off the audio source, the Z-Base575's power will automatically turn off after approximately three minutes with no signal. There is also a power button on the remote to override the auto power circuit and a master power switch on the back panel.

Inputs/Outputs: The ZVOX Z-Base575 has two pair of RCA inputs on the rear panel. Input 1 is for connecting your TV, PC, or other audio source; input 2 acts as a mixing input, you'll hear both simultaneously. A single RCA output allows you to connect an optional powered subwoofer.

Remote: The included remote has controls for power, mute, volume, PhaseCue effect level, subwoofer output, and treble level.

Connecting To Your TV: It is recommended that you connect the Z-Base575 to the audio output of your TV. If your TV's audio outputs can be set to Variable, you can use your TV's remote control to adjust the volume. If not, use the Z-Base575's remote to control the volume.

    Big Improvement

Written By bmac32, Pinellas Park, FL on Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Big improvement over any speaker in a tv. We've had several wows, that's one speaker cabinet? Sure you get more bass, spend more and add other speaker cabinets as well. I've mounted this thing in three places and settled on about 3" off the floor. As for the remote, it take a firm push to work plus it needs to be aimed at the speaker.

Ours is about two years old and the power company almost got it but I reset it by using the power button on the back and left it off for better than an hour.

    zvox sound bar 575

Written By Danny, Pittsburgh,Pa on Saturday, June 11, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After receiving the sound bar I opted to give it a try. To my dismay the only thing that I could hear that was differant from the TV speakers was that the zvox was a lot Louder. As far as the speakers making your ears seem as though your receiving sound differant angles is a complete fabrication on who ever wrote that phase in the article. I would not spend my money on it.

    disappointing for the money

Written By GaryM, Fort Myers, FL on Sunday, January 16, 2011

I find myself regretting my purchase of the ZVOX Z-Base575 Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System. The clarity is pathetic and the simplistic tuner provides little to no perceptible control. I have a room conducive to "bounce", but I have yet to think "where did that sound come from." It is only frontal. You also have to be immediately in front of it (2-3 feet) to get the ZBOX clicker to work consistently. The only positive item is that it can be loud...but loud without clarity is not satisfying. I have had the unit 60 days and am now stuck..

    Pleasant Surprise

Written By JackG, NC on Friday, December 03, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Being the owner of an outstanding and expensive upper level media room setup for home theater, I was more than surprised at both the ease of installation and performance of the ZVOX 575. As is the case with most flat screen TVs, the Samsung in the living room was sadly lacking in the sound department. After installing the 575, it is probably debatable whether the average listener would justify the the added cost, inconvenience and clutter involved with a sizable component system not to mention the wife-friendly aspect of the 575.

This is a slam-dunk for 5 stars except for the remote which is non-functional beyond 2 feet from the receiver. Same issue with the replacement from Crutchfield. No suggestions offered to remedy yet so will work on setting up for use with universal remote
