Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-110

by Ken Nail

Alpine sound for your car

Alpine's CDE-110 CD receiver offers the perfect solution for the driver who wants to upgrade audio performance while staying on budget. You'll be impressed by this Alpine's strong sound quality, user-friendly controls, and options for expansion.

Lots of ways to enjoy your music

The CDE-110 plays your regular store-bought CDs, plus discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. If you like to carry your music on a thumb drive, you can pop it in the USB input on the front panel (no iPod® controls), then access your tunes with the Alpine's controls. The front auxiliary input comes in handy for connecting a portable satellite radio or your iPod.

Alpine's CDE-110 CD receiver

Thanks to the receiver's powerful built-in amp, you should experience a big jump in power and clarity over your factory radio. If you're looking for even more performance, a set of preamp outputs provides a convenient connection for an outboard amp or a powered sub.

Pretty good for what you pay. If you're looking for function with nothing fancy, this is it.
      Pros:
      Works great for the price.
      Cons:
I wish it had more variety with eq settings... Only has 4, I believe.

Bought this deck to replace the malfunctioning Blaupunkt in my Step-son's focus. As expected, this radio sounds great. However, it doesn't have a subwoofer pre-out, so if you want to expand and add some bumps later on, you need to get a more expensive unit.....just something to think about.
      Pros:
Terrific sound at a bargain basement price. Easy to use. Attractive design. Top quality!
      Cons:
      No sub pre-out.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love my new Alpine CDE-110. Bought it to replace OEM radio that died in my car and it far surpases the old deck. Like the tortoise and the hare... I had originally picked out another more expensive unit but my Crutchfield Advisor told me this unit would work my automatic antenna and the other would not. I could not be happier. This unit has clean lines, is easy to operate and has great sound! However I too find the lack of a clock showing constantly a disappointment. I thought maybe the clock would show after holding the "view" button down as it does in my truck but no, it does not. Would I send the unit back for this tiny flaw? Heck no. I'll just try to find a little stick on clock for my dash. I had so much fun playing with my new radio, it took 2 days to get around to setting the clock anyway... Probably not going to miss that clock.
      Pros:
Great radio for the price. Lot more features than I expected and easy to use.
      Cons:
No clock showing when turned off.

Great deck for my wife's Nissan Maxima. It was a huge upgrade from the stock deck. Very simple and easy to use. She likes to use her usb to listen to music so it was perfect for her. Not to flashy, but works great.
      Pros:
Simple to use Easy to install Sounds great
      Cons:
The track display is kind of generic

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a simple stereo with few features, good sound and not too expensive. I bought this to replace my 2 year old JVC HD radio, what a piece of junk. The clock never kept time and the HD radio was always going in and out. The JVC didn't have radio preset buttons either, I never noticed until after I bought it. The new Alpine is so much nicer. Looks good in my Civic.
      Pros:
No HD radio, not a fan. Radio preset buttons. No subwoofer crossover filter, my amp already has a crossover. Good sound/power. Good quality. Easy to navigate menu.
      Cons:
No remote included, but I usually lose them anyway.

      Great Sound

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought for the wife's 2004 Pontiac Vibe that had a radio with dead lights. Also wanted a simple hassle free way to connect our iPhones in the car (aux input). Great Alpine quality from the finished look of the unit, ease of use and sound quality. I was debating also changing the speakers but they already sound great with this unit.

The only thing I wish it did was let us charge an iPhone with the provided USB input, instead of just giving us an error message. Also, when powered off but with the car on, no clock is displayed on the screen.
      Pros:
Great sound, simple to use, clean looks.
      Cons:
Wish the display had a dimming feature.

I spent a while looking through reviews to buy a new stereo. All I really needed was an audio jack to listen to my mp3 player but I thought it would be fun to have the usb jack too. A lot of other stereo reviews had warnings about a bad user interface and not being able to search by artist or genre. This one didn't say anything bad so I went with it. Well, you can't search by artist or genre, but you can navigate by the folders on the usb drive and I decided I like that well enough. The user interface is really easy, and I like being able to switch back and forth from my mp3 player and flash drive. Something I didn't notice when I bought it was that you can't play wma files, but it probably wouldn't have been a deal breaker.
      Pros:
      Easy to use
      Cons:
      can't play wma files

This Alpine is a straight forward and easy to use unit. The only thing holding it back from a fifth star is that the clock only appears to display when the unit is switched on. The unit does not light up or display the clock when the vehicle is running and the radio is off. This could be a wiring error on my part, but I do not think so. There is no reference in the manual.
      Pros:
Easy to use Easy to install clean look
      Cons:
clock does not display without radio being on

I bought the CDE-110 to install in my mother-in-law's car because her factory radio was broken. This deck is a very good basic CD deck that also has all of the features you would probably need for a replacement CD unit.. The CD and tuner sound great but I doubt she will ever use the USB or aux inputs. This deck is very easy for anyone to operate while driving and you can always see the display no matter what the lighting conditions may be. The deck has good power and like any Alpine deck it has great sound quality right out of the box. If you need a good no-frills basic CD deck, this is it.
      Pros:
Very good value for the price. Excellent Alpine sound quality.
      Cons:
The only thing I would suggest is maybe adding selectable backlighting and faceplate colors, however the blue/white is still a good combination.

Bought it to replace a shaky factory AM/FM/Cassette player in a used car specifically because it was less complicated than other similar units. I especially like the USB input.
      Pros:
      simplicity of operation, great value
      Cons:
tight fit front to back going in

excellent sound, backlighting and dials are modestly sufficient. screen is clear to read. very powerful clear & resonant sound. like the scrolling marquee feature. Only complaint is the ipod playlist procedure for selections & mixing are complex and confusing

      Excellent sound, basic feature set

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent sound, as expected from Alpine. Doesn't have the fancy set of features as the more expensive models further up their line, but I'm quite happy with the basic functionality and simple-to-understand interface. An excellent choice if you want to avoid the expense of needing an amplifier.
      Pros:
      Excellent Sound
      Cons:
wish it worked with non-Apple portable music players. serious bummer.

      Great receiver and easy install!

Installed in a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this Alpine to replace the factory deck in my 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage. My local stereo shop was going to charge me $300+ to hook up only a connector to my existing radio in order to play my iPhone. I was able to get a brand new deck that is iPhone ready and looks great for only $100. The install took me less than one hour and was much easier than expected. Especially considering the last time I did something like this was 25+ years ago in high school!
