Peachtree Audio

Everything you always wanted in a stereo receiver, except the radio

An integrated amplifier is essentially a receiver without a built-in AM/FM tuner. You get power to drive your speakers, audio controls, and inputs for music source components. Connect an iPod, a computer, a network music player, or any other device that can play Internet radio, and you may find you have no need for an AM/FM radio.

Our take on the Peachtree Audio Nova 125

by Woody Sherman

More power to you

Peachtree Audio's original Nova integrated amp/DAC was an instant classic when introduced: versatile, impeccably built and impressively capable. But the power it generated topped out at 80 watts into 6 ohms, and for some, that wasn't enough. Peachtree heard the input from their fans, went back to the design lab, and came up with the Nova 125, a refined re-imagining of that earlier model. From the muscular, ultra clean 125 watts of power it generates into each channel, to the redesigned asynchronous USB input/DAC combination that tames all digital sources, the Nova 125 stands ready to serve as the beating heart of your audiophile music system.

Refined, warm, and detail-oriented

Subtle refinements will help you wrest every bit of musical enjoyment from your music library. A single 6N1P triode vacuum tube, inexpensive and easy to find, sits at the core of the switchable preamp stage, and will warm and smooth your file-based and streaming digital music sources on demand. It can also be switched on for the built-in headphone amplifier, for a pleasing private listening experience. Galvanic isolation on all digital inputs means your music won't be contaminated by electrical noise, a common problem with computer sources. And rest assured, "jitter," a common source of musical degradation from computer sources, won't be a problem. The processing path features a 24-bit/192kHz asynchronous USB input and an ESS Sabre 9023 upsampling DAC. Together they buffer and reclock all digital bitstreams so that jitter errors amount to less than 3 picoseconds. You don't need to know how much that is. You just need to know it's inaudible.

One-box solution

If you had to pick a component, just one component, that would truly "up your game" when considering a stereo system, the Peachtree Audio Nova 125 would be an excellent place to start. Not only does it sound great and power the world's most demanding speakers, it looks great too, with a stylish, modern flair and three finishes to complement your listening room decor.

Highlights:

  • 125 watts x 2 channels into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.5% THD

    Integrated Amplifier

Overview: The Peachtree Audio Nova 125 is a 125-watt x 2-channel integrated amplifier with digital and analog inputs and outputs so you can connect both your digital and analog audio components. The Nova 125 has a USB input for your computer, in addition to three digital inputs for other digital sources (like Squeezebox, Wadia iTransport, Sonos, Roku Soundbridge, and SiriusXM tuners). It also has one stereo analog input for docking stations, CD players, tape decks or phono preamps. If you want to add a subwoofer or outboard amplifier, the Nova 125 features a preamp-output output.

125W x 2Ch Amplifier: The 125 watt per channel Power Amp is the newest generation of Class D technology. It takes audio performance to a whole new level with advances including extended bandwidth, improved dynamic range, and exceptionally low distortion. These high current output stages can comfortably drive any speaker load from 2 ohms. This amplifier has enough muscle to power any speaker you use and sounds great at any volume.

Tube Buffer: The Tube Buffer (6N1P)can be switched on via a button on the remote control to add a dose of warmth and take the hard edge off compressed audio sources like MP3s.

High-Quality D/A Converter: The Peachtree Audio Nova 125 features an onboard ESS Sabre 9023 upsampling DAC (Digital-to-Analog converter). The 24-bit/192kHz upsampling D/A converter transforms just about any digital source to the performance of a high-end CD player. Using a patented process called Hyperstream, the ESS Sabre DAC buffers the incoming digital bitstream and reclocks it from thousands of picoseconds of jitter to less than 3 picoseconds, before passing it through a high-resolution 24-bit/192kHz upsampling processor, which is also capable of 96dB s/n ratio. The Nova 125 also features a user selectable DAC filter slope which allows for a sharp slope that measures better or a soft slope that is preferred by many audiophiles.

Galvanic Isolation: Galvanic Isolation blocks electrical noise from all of the digital inputs on the Nova 125. Computers and digital streamers are prime sources of electrical noise. Electrical noise, even noise that you can't hear directly, masks fine details and distorts the tone of music. Galvanic isolation eliminates this noise.

Regulated Power Supplies: The Peachtree Audio Nova 125 employs 11 regulated power supplies for the DAC and transformer-couples each digital input stage so noise associated with ground problems and switching power supplies is eliminated. The Nova 125 features a multi-voltage, switchable, toroidal power transformer. For international use, the Nova 125 allows you to switch its voltage.

Tube Window: The Nova 125 features a tube window which allows you to view the glow of the unit's tube.

    Audio Connections

24-bit/192kHz Asynchronous USB Input: The Nova 125 has a 24-bit/192kHz Asynchronous USB input to connect your computer. The unit's USB type-B connection will take digital audio content from your computer and send it to the internal DAC of the Nova 125 via I2S configuration. Using the Nova 125, you can take a pure digital audio signal from iTunes, Windows Media, Front Row, or any other music management system on your computer before it goes through a sound card. Just hook up a 2.0 USB cable between your computer and the Nova 125's USB type-B port; no sound card is required. The Nova 125 can decode MP3, MP44, WMA, FLAC, AIFF, WAV, and Apple lossless codecs; with resolutions of 16-bit/44.1kHz, 16-bit/48kHz, 24-bit/88kHz, 24-bit/96kHz, 24-bit/176kHz, and 24-bit/192kHz.

Analog Input: The Nova 125 if fitted with a single stereo analog RCA input for connecting an external audio source, such as your CD player or Tape deck.

Digital Audio Inputs: The Nova 125 is equipped with one optical (24-bit/96kHz) and two coaxial (24-bit/192kHz) digital inputs for connecting external digital audio sources such as your Blu-ray/ DVD player or cable/satellite box.

Pre-Out: The stereo RCA preamp-outputs allow you to use an external amplifier with the Nova 125; they also provide connections for a powered subwoofer.

Speaker Terminals: The unit's binding-post speaker terminals are clearly marked red-positive and black-negative for proper polarity connections. The amplifier's binding-post speaker terminals will accommodate bare wire (up to 10AWG), banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, and spade-connectors.

Headphone Output: The Nova 125 has a "Class A, tube" headphone section. The Peachtree Audio Nova 125 utilizes a front-panel, 1/4" headphone input which mutes the speakers when headphones are plugged in.

    Remote Control

Remote Control: The Nova 125 comes supplied with an IR remote control which is easy to use. The remote control offers the same functions as the Nova 125's front-panel controls, plus adds a mute button. The remote is powered by two "AAA" batteries (not supplied). The remote control IR sensor is located in the center of the Nova 125's front-panel.

Digital Audio with PEACHTREE NOVA 125

Written By dseALPHA, Alpharetta, GA on Friday, May 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Being my first purchase of an audiophile quality integrated amp, I didn't know quite what to expect sound wise and was a little concerned that I might be over paying for the latest and greatest marketing campaign. After listening to the NOVA 125 for two weeks with a pair of POLK AUDIO LSiM 703, I submit to being totally blown away with its performance: 16bit CD quality files sound fantastic and OMG, the fidelity and musical depth of 24bit high sampling rate audio files make you feel as if the performer was in your room playing a private concert. With this purchase, I have a genuine appreciation of the engineers at PEACHTREE and the benefits of high quality digital. If you enjoy listening to impeccable sounds and can afford the NOVA with a high quality speaker system, by all means, check it out.
    Pros:
Great sounds, small footprint at a reasonable price.
    Cons:
    none IDed ....yet.

    Peachtree Nova 125

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I reviewed this item early in the month and gave it 5 stars. I still do however I upgraded to the NAD C275 Dac. I found that the Nova 125 lacked the power I needed and was taxing out. I play my music loud and the Nova 125 was not able to keep up. Great sound, great quaility not for me @ higher volumes.

The NAD has the power to drive my 4 ohm speakers with authority.

The Peachtree 125 is a great Dac amp for moderate to lower listening volumes in my oprion. Give it a try you'll be impressed
    Pros:
    Great sound
    Cons:
    Not enought power for me

    Nova 125

Written By Joe Mc, Orland Park IL on Wednesday, March 20, 2013

the Nova 125 arrived today. I was tired of the home theather 2 channel sound and thought I had to replace my 1989 Klipsch Forte' II speakers. I have a nice Integra DTR-30.4 HT receiver but it made the Klipsch high end harsher than normal. Well the Nova 125 has breathed new life into the old Forte's and the Nova is only up and running 2 hours. I am runnng the front speaker pre-out from the Integra front speaker to the Nova to home theather and running the Nova solo for 2 channel audio. Cool unit, sounds great so far. I am used to running an old Carver M 1.o t 200 watt per channel and was concerned if the Nova 125 could keep up, it can and has a ton more headroom. Time to save $$ for some high end speakers.
    Pros:
Easy orderng from Crutchfield. I like the return policy. Easy unit set up.
    Cons:
    None yet

All I can say is wow!

Written By DGentry, Seattle, Wa on Friday, January 25, 2013

This will be my second Peachtree unit. I planned to step way up on my speakers and felt the original Nova just didn't have the power needed to drive them. I read about the power upgrade and decided to try it out with my new Martin Logan Montis. Tough load but I thought I'd give it a try before springing for a much more expensive rig. When it arrived, I hooked it up and noticed it sounded a bit tight. Not very open. As the night went on, it seemed to sound a good bit better. I left it on and the next day after work, this thing was sounding really sweet and really powerful. The bass was tight and really deep and the panels were awes tricking at any level I could comfortably take it. Over the last month, I'm really taken with the way it was voiced. The tube buffer comes in handy w a lot of music and is great for taming the top end. I have several sources plugged in and the nova125 dac is far superior to the nova. My MacMini is resolving from 320kbps to 24/192 files and Spotify sounds fabulous. The old Sony ES555 w a great transport got the business end of the Peachtree Dac giving it a totally new life. When I finally got to the turntable last night, I flipped. The Rega P3 through the real analog input is greatly aided by the snappy amp. I'm rediscovering so much music and I suspect I'll be enjoying this piece for a very long time. @ the price, this unit is a bargain.
    Pros:
Tonal balance and speed. High res ESS DAC, tube buffer, involving, still just so impressed that its driving these speakers like a sep amp Pre. Very good value.
    Cons:
If you use a turntable, you'll have to use an outboard phono preamp.

    Power and convenience

Written By michaelb, Seattle, WA on Thursday, January 03, 2013

I read about Peachtree Audio's Nova 125 in the summer of 2012 and thought it might be a good product for my changing audio needs. About a decade ago, I converted my entire CD collection to Apple Lossless files and used a Squeezebox/Slimserver to pump audio from my computer to my stereo. It worked well, but my 15 year old amp/pre-amp were showing their age, hence my original interest in new HiFi gear.

One of the reasons I waited for the Nova 125 (purchased December 2012) is because I have fairly large, floor-standing speakers. Straight out of the box, this thing sounded great, even at room shaking volume. By this weekend, I expect I will have completely broken in the new amp, but so far the sound has been great!

A part of this (I'm sure) is due to the Nova's DAC and the cleaner path between source and speaker. Where before I was using the DAC built into my Squeezebox and moving the analog signal to my preamp, now I'm streaming audio data to an Apple TV hooked directly to the Nova via optical cable. The DAC in the Nova is outstanding and there is zero hiss, just like quite should be.

I haven't played with the turning the tube stage on and off and I probably won't. The remote is fine, but honestly, my iPhone controls the music, so if I need to get up to change the volume, it's no big deal. Finally, set up was easy and the device is quite attractive. I dropped an extra hundred bucks on the cherry version and am glad I did.
    Pros:
Plenty of power. Great DAC. Easy to set up. Looks great! A terrific option for anyone who wants to get the most from their digital music collection.
