Boston Acoustics

Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

Our take on the Boston Acoustics G110PS

by John Pollard

Tuned for maximum bass

Here's the bass — Boston Acoustics' G110PS enclosed subwoofer puts the rumble in your sound system, matching a G1 Series 10" subwoofer with a ported box that's optimized to deliver the most bass possible. The GTuned enclosure uses Boston's unique venting to increase bass output without adding the noise that inferior ports can cause. Boston Acoustics assembles and tunes the box in the U.S.A., and its 3/4" medium-density fiberboard construction offers extra strength and stability.

Connect an amp and you're ready to rock

The enclosure handles up to 200 watts RMS, and its 4-ohm total impedance makes it compatible with most amps. You'll get clean signal flow through the nickel-plated terminals, and heavy-duty carpeting protects the box and your car's interior. Place the G110PS in your trunk or cargo area, connect a compatible amp and wiring, and take your music to a deeper level.

Highlights:

  • ported enclosure with one G1 10" subwoofer
  • 3/4" MDF construction with carpet covering
  • 4-ohm total impedance
  • power handling: 50-200 watts RMS (400 watts peak power)
  • sensitivity: 84 dB
  • frequency response: 24-350 Hz
  • 19-3/4"W x 12-7/8"H x 14-3/4"D1 x 11-1/8"D2
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

Overview: The Boston Acoustics GTuned G110PS subwoofer enclosure features one 10" G110-4 subwoofer (4-ohms). The cabinet is made of MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) with glued dado ends.

Woofer Design: The G1 subwoofer has a copolymer cone with a raised polypropylene dust cap and a large foam surround. It features a wrap-around gasket which gives you a superior seal. The basket features the patented RadialVent cooling technology which directs the airflow around the 2" voice coil to increase power handling.

Terminals: The terminal cup is inset into the enclosure for a tight seal and a finished look. The nickel-plated, heavy-duty spring post terminals accept pin connectors, single or dual banana plugs, and bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Long Excursion: The woofers have a 1-3/4" peak-to-peak excursion for accurate deep bass output.

SureSet Protection: The input terminal is equipped with a 4-amp ATC fuse for voice coil protection under transient conditions such as accidental momentary overdrive. Use of the standard automotive style fuses allows you to quickly service the woofer in case a fuse is blown during use.

Note: The fuses do not protect against voice-coil failure resulting from long term high power abuse.

GTuned Port: Relying on a longstanding Boston technique, this GTuned enclosure features PowerVent tuning to deliver a perfect blend of extension, impact, and efficiency. The large port reduces turbulence and keeps your bass crisp, clear and deep, even under heavy use. The G110PS enclosure is tuned to 36 Hz.

I don't even...

Written By JFrye, Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, June 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The set up: JVC head unit (older, discontinued model) Boston Acoustics GTA-704 amp (3 channel mode) Nasty blown out Kenwood 6 3/4" in front doors (hoping to replace once I get some moneys) Kicker 6" x 9" DS693 (receiving 70W RMS each from amp. High pass filter @ 80 Hz) Boston Acoustics sub (receiving 250W RMS @4ohms. Gain is about 3/4. Low pass filter @ 180 Hz)

This sub is slamming. I just installed this puppy this morning and I am very pleased. The sound is fat and loose and the bass is very boomy. I see that some people complain about the sub being ported. KNOW YOUR PRODUCT, PEOPLE. A ported sub is supposed to sound boomy and thunderous. It works well for hard driving music, which happens to be what I like. The sub is not even broken in yet and it still makes my ribs rattle within my chest. The box seems to be very well put together and looks great. The sound of the sub far exceeded my expectations for a single 10" sub. I have the volume of the sub turned down quite low to give the sub a chance to get broken in and it still fills my car with great sounding bass. Yer not gonna win any sound competitions with this sub, but I would definitely recommend for some one looking to add some depth to their music. I bought it on sale for just under $100 so it's a great value. Very happy with my purchase and would buy it again in a heart beat.
Pros:
Sounds great! Very loud. I would definitely recommend overpowering it slightly like my set up does. It gives you some head room and allows you to really set the gain according to your preference. I'm not sure I would give it much more power than 250-270W RMS, however. Amazing value.
Cons:
The port is built on the side of the sub. I knew this before buying but did not realize how much it would bother me. Sound is very directional so you kind of have to decide which end of the box will face the cabin so you can either hear the boomyness of the port or the punchyness of the actual woofer. I gave it only a 4 for coolness factor because my roommate keeps making fun of me for not building my own box XD

Ported and Size Not For Me

Written By Adam, Fort Collins, Co on Sunday, May 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I believe that this sub is a good value. However, the sub being ported killed it for me. It really only sounded good with the few hip hop/rap songs that I like. Otherwise it did not do a good job. Plus. the sub enclosure was just WAAAY too big. I have gotten a lot better sound out of enclosures half this size (that were Boston speakers too). I used to rock full Boston Acoustic systems in my cars - early 2000's. Just assumed that this enclosure would perform as well - not even close. What happened to Boston?!
Pros:
Good Price
Cons:
SQL and the size is too big

Wow, amazing sound

Written By JMart, Bakersfield, CA. on Wednesday, November 28, 2012

So a 10" sub at only 200rms makes one think that it's not good or clean or loud enough. When I purchased this sub, I believed that it would produce a good amount of clean bass since it's made from such a reputable company, Boston Acoustics. I paired it with an old mtx amp that produces 280 watts rms at 4ohms. Gain at half. Put a Kanye West cd and holy smokes...this combo hits really really hard. I couldn't believe my ears at how 200w rms sub can sound so clean and so loud. I highly recommend this sub for anyone who is looking for a quality made sub and box. You won't regret buying it.
Pros:
price, sound, bang for buck, quality
Cons:
Not a real con but it was slightly bigger than I thought it would be.
