Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Our take on the ZVOX Z-Base V320

by Marshall Chase

ZVOX creates high-performance TV sound that's also practical. Posing as a compact, mild-mannered pedestal, the Z-Base V320 speaker will give your HDTV the boost in sound quality it deserves. Flexible connection capabilities include analog and digital audio inputs, for both newer and older TVs and components.

Putting the emphasis on dialogue — not commercials

Tiny television speakers tend to muddy speech, often making it difficult to follow the story. That's why ZVOX created a dialogue enhancement feature that gives voices new clarity and prominence. What's more, ZVOX knows how sponsors love to blast us out of our seats during commercial breaks. Thanks to the output leveling feature, the V320 keeps commercials on a short leash so you can just relax and enjoy.

ZVOX Z-Base V320

A whole lot of goodness in a sweet little package

This one-piece system houses three full-range speakers, a high-output woofer, and built-in amplification — there's no need to use a separate receiver or run wires to any external speakers. Plus, the V320 is designed to serve as a convenient base for flat-panel TVs with screen sizes up to 42". Even older TVs sit perfectly atop this sturdy wooden cabinet that can support up to 120 lbs. Place the Z-Base directly underneath your TV and you won't have to worry about making extra room for it on your entertainment stand.

Convenience is key

The Z-Base V320 is a great place to plug in your iPod® or portable player for terrific sound. It has a minijack input on the front panel for easy access. The display on the V320 lights up from behind the front cloth grille then disappears when not in use. And the V320 learns the commands of your TV remote, giving you one less clicker to keep track of. Signal-sensing circuitry powers the system on and off along with your TV.

Features

Overview: The ZVOX Z-Base 320 is a single-cabinet audio system for your flat-panel television. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound processing to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

TV Compatibility: Most 27"-42" flat-panel TVs can be placed directly on top the Z-Base 320. The television should weigh 110 pounds or less. The TV's pedestal base should not exceed 22" width or 10" depth. You can also place the unit on a shelf directly below the TV, if desired.

Class D Amplifier: The ZVOX Z-Base 320 is bi-amplified, using a specially designed, highly-efficient 45 watt Class D amplifier that includes electronic contouring for superb frequency response.

Three 2" Drivers: The ZVOX Z-Base 320 uses three 2" main speaker drivers that use a long-throw design to create a remarkable wide range, and accurate sound.

5-1/4" Subwoofer: In addition to the three main speakers, the Z-Base 320 has a built-in down firing high-mass, long-throw 5-1/4" subwoofer in a ported enclosure.

PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound: The Z-Base 320 uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue II virtual surround processing to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. PhaseCue II, as its name implies, manipulates the phase of the separate channels to "fool the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. The benefits of PhaseCue II vary greatly based on program material. Live music and well-recorded modern movie soundtracks will deliver rich, three-dimensional sound - pulling the sound out from the speakers and into the room, literally surrounding the listener.

  • Music: With music, PhaseCue II creates a very wide soundstage - it literally sounds like you are listening to speakers eight feet apart from each other.
  • Movies: When listening to a good movie, the soundtrack will envelop you - putting you in the middle of the action.

Note: While the virtual surround experience isn't the same as a high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much better than the speakers built-in to most TV's.

Wood (MDF) Cabinet: The Z-Base 320 features a cabinet made of MDF (medium density fiberboard), the same material used in most high-end loudspeakers. Its low-profile design blends perfectly with most flat-panel TVs.

Disappearing Display: The Z-Base 320 features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass/treble, and PhaseCue II (virtual surround). It also shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling (OL), or Dialog Emphasis (DE) features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or front panel) controls, the display disappears completely.

Controls

Dialogue Emphasis (DE): Dialogue Emphasis (DE) provides an easy-to-use and effective method for improving the intelligibility of television dialogue. By pressing the Dialogue Emphasis (DE) function button on the remote control, the system engages a circuit that mimics the functions of a hearing aid. The frequencies used by human voices are dynamically emphasized, while other frequencies are minimized.

Output Leveling (OL): The Output Leveling (OL) function prevents large changes in volume levels. Simply press the Output Leveling (OL) button on the remote control and a sophisticated processor takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on. This system also helps by boosting the audio levels from a DVD or Blu-ray player that are not loud enough.

Surround Settings: You can adjust the level of PhaseCue II virtual surround processing effect. You can select from Surround One (low effect), Surround Two (moderate effect), Surround Three (strong effect).

Tone Control: The Z-Base 320 has independent bass and treble controls. Each has a range from -4 to 4, and can be adjusted using the remote control only.

Remote Control: The included wireless remote has controls for power, input select, mute, volume, PhaseCue II effect level, bass and treble level. and DE/OL functions.

Programmable: The new Z-Base 320 can be programmed to respond to your current remote control. The illuminated display walks you through a less-than-a-minute programming cycle. Then your TV remote, cable box remote, or satellite receiver remote can control volume up, volume down, mute, and power on the ZVOX system.

Auto Standby: The Z-Base 320 will enter a low-power Standby mode after approximately 5 minutes of no audio signal.

Connections

One Cable Connection: The Z-Base 320 requires only one connection cable. You can use either analog or digital connection options to your television.

Audio Inputs: The ZVOX Z-Base 320 offers analog and digital audio inputs:

  • Digital Inputs: The Z-Base 320 is equipped with a coaxial digital (single RCA) and an optical digital (Toslink) input. The digital inputs will accept 2-channel PCM only (not compatible with Dolby Digital bitstream signals).
  • Analog Inputs: The Z-Base 320 has two rear-panel stereo RCA analog inputs and a front-panel 3.5mm analog audio input. The front panel input is handy for connecting an iPod or other portable audio device.

ZVOX Z-Base is Zfantastic

Written By Dennis, Little Rock, AR on Friday, May 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We bought a 39" LCD TV and just as I suspected the sound is horrible. We have the TV in a corner so a sound bar is not mountable to the wall and will block the screen if used on the surface. After searching and searching at every store that sold TV's and Stereo equipment, I stumbled across an old Crutchfield catalog, Eureka! Got on line and there it was, the solution to my problems at a reasonable price. The ZVOX measures up to the great reviews it has received, the look is inconspicuous, but the sound is rich and versatile with the Dialog Enhancer and several Surround Sound options. The ZVOX is easy to install, works with my Uverse remote, plays music from my iphone, and best of all, I don't have wires, speakers strung all over my living room. The ZVOX is perfect if you want great sound with simple design.
Pros:
Compact, Great Sound, Ease of use, Crutchfield Tech support for life!
Cons:
None

ZVOX Z-Base V320 Really Does Work!!!

Written By Dave, Bonita Spgs, FL on Sunday, April 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK, I was looking for a bar that ENHANCES DIALOG. I had bought (and returned) another sound bar because it DIDN'T do what I wanted, namely pull a sports commentator's voice out of their phony boosted crowd noise. Some overzealous producers boost the crowd noise at a sports event to "create excitement". ARRRRGH!! Also, some older movies have characters whispering important asides, which we couldn't hear. Both situations are quite frustrating!!! I sought a sound bar that could suppress the background noise somewhat, and emphasize the voice frequencies. This Z-Vox did just that!! There's a specific button on the remote, called "Dialog Emphasis"!! Push that button and see the difference!! Don't know why every sound bar mfr. can't do that!!! BTW, these sound bars were ostensibly created for the newer "Flat-panel TV's" that have tiny speakers. We have a large (60") projection TV with sizable speakers. Our speakers are quite good, but they just can't do what theZ-Vox does!!!! Also,Crutchfield delivers FAST!!! I couldn't believe it. I ordered it, immediately went to the front door, and Voila!! No, it wasn't there, but a day or so later, it WAS there!! Very Fast!! Try one out and thank me!!
Pros:
Easy set up; EMPHASIZES DIALOG!!
Cons:
A bit pricey, but it WORKS!!

We purchased the ZVOX320 to replace the tinny sound we got from our 50 inch tv's speakers. The sound was not good quality at all. We read the reviews of other buyers and we totally agree with the positive reviews. Very easy to set up and the sound is great.
Pros:
Price ,quality, ease of set up.

Deceptively Listenable

Written By valleyguyva, Roanoke, VA on Friday, March 29, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Few corporate marketing departments would leap to describe their product as a good compromise, but that's essentially the role of the ZVOX Z-Base V320. When you can't tolerate the tinny sound of your flat panel speakers but you have neither the space nor the money for a nice home theater system, the ZVOX is, well, a great compromise. It was especially well-suited to my elderly mom who hated the sound emanating from her plasma TV, but didn't want speakers cluttering her small living room. The solution was clear and so was the sound! The ZVOX Z-Base V320 serves as a base for your TV, while delivering exceptional sound and a reasonably effective pseudo-surround effect. For the hearing impaired, the ZVOX even enhances voices for a more pleasant viewing and listening experience. Granted, no one's going to be looking around the room for the subwoofer, but the ZVOX delivers as advertised and then some. Sometimes compromise is good.
Pros:
Compact cabinet. Well constructed. Simple instructions. Easy installation. Room-filling sound. Voice enhancement for the hearing impaired.
Cons:
At first blush it seems a little pricey, but the proof is in the listening.

Great Sound from a Nice Box

Written By Alan, New York, NY on Sunday, January 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This ZVOX was just what I needed to give my TV sound a nice, clear boost. I was limited to certain choices because of size constraints, and this one fit perfectly. It can certainly generate sound loud enough to shake your walls, but more importantly, it helps with clarity and speech even at lower volumes. It was a breeze to set up, it synched with my t.v. remote control in about a minute, and I have had no problems at all. It is far better than I expected it to be. Looks great, too -- unobtrusive but sleek, IMHO. And Crutchfield delivery was very fast -- I blinked and I had the unit at my house
Pros:
Clear sound, terrific clarity. "Dialogue Emhasis" mode works well, as do the various "Surround Sound" choices and the "output leveler" (which raises the volume of whispered and low voices, and lowers the volume of screams and very loud sound effects).
Cons:
If you want your home system to break your windows and reverberate like Radio City (and be filled with speaker boxes and amps), this won't get you there. It won't really give you full surround sound, since obviously, the speakers are all in front of you. Oh, it came with two manuals, both in French and none in English -- an obvious mistake in what was in my particular box -- but the English version was on the ZVOX website and took about two seconds to print out.

Great Sound bar!

Written By SherryW, Las Cruces, NM on Tuesday, October 23, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my 3rd ZVOX sound bar having purchased two 550 HSD sound bars from Crutchfield.com in 2011. I purchased the ZVOX V320 to go with a new 26-inch Samsung television in my guest bedroom. Because of my past experience with ZVOX, it was the only brand I considered and I was pleased to see this new, slightly smaller model. The setup took about 5 minutes and the sound is absolutely perfect. With the variety of inputs, I am able to use the sound bar for watching television, listening to music through my home music server, as well as having a CD player or my iPod Touch attached. I am currently using the sound bar with an optical switch box which allows me to have all 3 devices running through the one optical connection of the ZVOX. There is no degradation of sound whatsoever with this method - the music sounds rich and vibrant and TV dialogue is clear and full also. The flexibility of the connections would also allow the same devices to be attached without any type of switch box by just using the RCA, coaxial, and optical inputs separately. The fact that this system can also "learn" from my Comcast remote control is also an advantage - the supplied instructions were easy to follow and to implement.

The ZVOX sound bar is a fabulous alternative for folks like myself who do not want all the drama and clutter of a home theater system and yet desire high-quality sound.

It is yet another quality product from an always reliable Crutchfield.com.
Pros:
Easy to set up; excellent sound quality for music and television dialogue; small footprint; a variety of options for connecting the sound bar to other devices; sound bar can "learn" from my cable company-supplied remote
Cons:
Absolutely none!

Zvox 320

Written By Johnny, Reidsville, Naorth Carolina on Saturday, September 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Connected and set up unit and happily began to enjoy my new sound bar. Trouble began when I turned off the unit. It hasn't worked since. Crutchfield was great and another unit arrived the next day. Hooked it up and the LCD display would not display all the numbers and letters. Called Crutchfield who got me with a Tech who had no clue about the unit and after several minutes He connected me with Zvox who put Tech on the phone. It would also not interface with the Time Warner remote. He is mailing a new LCD unit and directions on how to install it and says that should fix the unit. If not they will send a third unit.
Pros:
Just the right size and had great sound
Cons:
Have had 2 Zvox units that do not work and am expected to repair it myself.

Great upgrade for built-in speakers

Written By darrinmc, Massachusetts on Wednesday, September 05, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to upgrade the sound from my 42" plasma TV without resorting to a surround sound system. I checked out a few sound bars but I didn't have a place to put it. Having the sound bar in front of the TV would block the IR receiver and I didn't want to hang the TV on the wall. This unit fit perfectly in a shelf below the TV in my entertainment center. It's not surround sound but it's a huge improvement over the built-in sound. It operates perfectly with the remote I already had. Turns on and off when it is supposed to.
Pros:
Integrates seamlessly with existing TV remote (volume controls & on/off) Nice sound, just enough bass
Cons:
Option to add a wireless subwoofer might be nice

Great little solution

Written By Homebrewers wife, Lady Lake, FL on Tuesday, August 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was looking for something that would improve the sound of our Sony Bravia flat screen TV in our vacation home. Since this is not our full time residence, I did not want to set up a traditional home theater system. Also, wanted something a little smaller than a typical sound bar. This just fits the bill. The sound is great for the TV, we can now hear dialogue and there is enough surround effects to make movie watching more enjoyable. The real plus, is being able to plug in my iPod and listen to music. The setup took less than 5 minutes and everything you needed was in the box. I would definitely recommend this product to others.
Pros:
Sound, easy setup, iPod capable
Cons:
none

Great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As we age our hearing becomes less acute. I found it difficult to distinguish the words being spoken on TV so I added closed captions. Once I attached this product to my TV the sound quality improved to the point that I'm able to remove the closed captions and understand the dialog.
Pros:
Easy to install. Works as advertised.
Cons:
Had to purchase additional connecting wires. Those included were not appropriate for my TV.

Perfect for my needs. It is perfect for placing under our bedroom TV which sits on a dresser. Standard soundbars blocked the IR sensor, this one fits perfect. The sound is great, the control with the TV remote is nice and the sound features are another bonus. This is just what I needed.
Pros:
The form of the product and the sound.
Cons:
None that I can think of.

Good product

Written By Donna, Worcester, MA on Friday, February 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An excellent and attractive solution for our TV sound dilemma. It gave us two things we needed and wanted that we could not find with any other unit. 1. it fits perfectly into a wall niche below our Samsung HDTV for a neat, flush installation. 2. it works off our TV or BlueRay remotes.
Pros:
Clear and nicely diagrammed instructions.
Cons:
The dig optical audio cable fit in the ZVox is very loose. It falls out easily if moved.
